The 16 Best Restaurants Near Union Square - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Cantoo checks all the boxes of a great casual lunch and dinner spot. They have massive plates of Venezuelan Chinese noodles, rotisserie, and empanadas, a big space where it's easy to get a table, and a speedy takeout operation. The food at his basement-level Tenderloin restaurant is hearty and meat-forward—think pabellón with perfectly stewed beef, plantains, and white rice, or hot and crispy sweet and sour chicken. And when you consider that many dishes are in the single-digit price range (like the two plump pork lumpia for $5)—this place is the move for quick sit-down meals that'll leave you just a few dollars lighter." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

Google
One of the best Empanadas I've had. The beef was tender and full of flavor. I definitely should have ordered more than one. The grape pork ribs were full of flavor, very intense on the sweet factor which I wasn't prepared for and it is very sticky when you eat it. Not too much meat on the bone so the best way to eat it is probably with your hands The $9 rotisserie meal just needed to be a little bit hotter and I personally just wanted more salt but it was tender and not dry.

Google
This place is incredible 10/10. Delicious food, generous portions, great value, and casual vibe. Got the noodle soup with roast duck, salted egg pumpkin, and combo cantoo. I want to try everything on the menu!! Came back the next day and got the rotisserie chicken combo, cucumber salad, yucca frites, and a steak special. All delicious.

Google
This is the spot to go for a value meal. On top of that, the food is genuinely really yummy. Ordered a C1, C3 and a wonton soup (not pictured). All very home style and down-to-earth cooking. No fancy, extraneous stuff happening here. Service was ever so slightly on the long end, but there's not a lot of workers and they'd always be glad to help if you waved them down. Definitely pop by if you have the chance. Their rotisserie chicken is excellent!

Google
I loved this restaurant! This has been for a while in my must visit places in SF and as a Venezuelan who was raised in the east Coast...I'm glad I found this gem. The service is amazing, the food is truly amazing. I had the empanada de pabellón and the special that had BBQ ribs, special fried rice, chop suoi and a lumpia. I can't wait to go back to try the chicken. The people are mellow and I transported right back home with the great service and the amazing food . Please visit this place if you want Chinese food with the Latin flavor 💕 The portions are generous you will def take stuff to go. Gracias por su excelente servicio hoy chicos! Sin desperdicio gracias por mi polar 💓

Google
This place is amazing and slept on. The combos (Combo Valenciano and Combo Cantoo) are delicious and incredible value. I also love the salted egg pumpkin appetizer. The servers are warm and accommodating to any food restrictions. Can't wait to come back and try the other dishes on the menu!

Google
Cantoo is the kind of place that just feels like home. You can taste the love and family flavors in every bite, and the quality for the price is unbeatable!! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, like a gathering spot for the community. Service is friendly, making you feel like a regular even on your first visit. I already know I’ll be coming back… probably very often…

Yelp
I dined here recently because their wonton noodle soup is my go-to when I'm not feeling well. It's just so comforting and I feel nourished afterwards. I got the soup with rice vermicelli noodles, and it's a very generous portion! And the wontons were plump with pork and shrimp. The broth was clean and savory. The broccoli soaked in the flavor from the broth and still had a good crunch. I also got the mini empanadas and the green beans because I've been wanting to try them. The green beans had deep umami flavor with a nice peppery and garlicky kick. The mini empanadas were yummy with a subtle sweetness in the end. I would totally buy a bag of those if they came frozen. I bet they would do well in an air fryer. The gentleman who was running the floor was so nice and welcoming! The ambiance is super casual. This place is truly a gem in the Tenderloin.

Yelp
Cantoo is one of the best fusion restaurants in San Francisco while also getting you the most bang for your buck! The location may seem a little off putting as it's near the tenderloin but after walking from union square I can assure that it's not bad at all! Upon entering the restaurant gives off the an intimate diner feel as you are happily greeted by the workers. The food is 10/10 with no misses! I highly recommend the pulled pork and cheese empanada as well as the 9$ chicken plate and daily special steak plate. The portions are more than generous and the flavor profiles in each bite are amazing. The steak was cooked just right, empanada had a flavorful flaky crust and cheesy inside, and the chicken is one of the most worth meals in the city! The rice sides pair well with each dish and the garlic pork rib appetizer was great as well! Not to mention the fresh drinks and amazing service! The green sauce will have you pouring it over each bite! Will definitely be back and can't wait to try more!

Yelp
the service was amazing! our server was so kind and informative. we were given our food pretty quickly after ordering. there's two bathrooms for customers, i noticed lots of grub hub and doordash order pickups. the inside dining area is very clean and set for dine-in customers. the area surrounding is a lil sketch but inside is very nice! truly a hidden, underrated gem. the food was scrumptiousssss the fried chicken soooo cripsy and seasoned. the veggies though steamed still had a perfect crunch to 'em. the empanada nice and gooey and the rice was filling and moist, everything was genuinely perfect. i will definitely be coming back for dinner with friends! i def recommend this pkace if you're craving either cuisine and can't decide! they both hit so good, i hope to continue seeing this place thrive!

Yelp
Perhaps less Asian-fusion and more what a Chinese eatery in Venezuela might be. Still the value-to-flavor ratio makes Cantoo a great spot. Let's start with the Chinese side of the house. Chili oil pork dumplings are a hit - totally unassuming pan fried dumplings but plump and juicy on the inside with a numbing kick to the chili oil. Can give the garlic pork ribs a miss - crispy but dry and missing afore-promised garlic flavor. The empanada con pabellón is a hearty hand-pie chock-full of ingredients that make up a Venezuelan staple. Crumbly pastry enveloping flavorful shredded beef, black beans, and cotija cheese. Flavorful and filling. The combo Valenciano is arguably their house special and the most "fusion" if you will. The rotisserie chicken is right up there. Crispy skin; moist meat. Great with the slaw and sauces. Upgraded to the especial fried rice and it's a lil dry but oddly brought me back to a nostalgic primary school recess experience. All in great value for under $10. Service was great. Friendly and hospitable. A casual spot you can return again and again.

Yelp
This is the second time eating from cantoo though both times were take out / delivery so I have yet to eat there in person. The combo is $9 if you order not via food delivery apps. It's much more if you order through the apps. I want to say I called in my order to save some money. My son has food allergies (egg, dairy, nuts) so they recommended that he doesn't get the combo Valenciana because the fried rice and coleslaw contained either egg or dairy. For him we got him the rotisserie chicken with beans and yucca. I had the combo Valenciana. I also got the quesillo. The quesillo gets five stars from me. It's like flan but way better - more dense, more flavorful. Unfortunately the fried rice was hard and dry. Coleslaw was too sweet (I know this is just the way it tastes in Venezuela so it's just a matter of preference). The chicken was okay but for rotisserie it isn't my fave because I don't like the way they cut the chicken. I know it's supposed to make it easier to eat but personally I like my quarter chicken uncut. I'm gonna try eating there in person because I must have that quesillo again and I will try some other items Andi ask for my chicken uncut. Will report back!

Yelp
This right here is a gem, this restaurant is Chinese Venezuelan fusion. It is located in the Tenderloin so keep your eyes peeled with your surroundings. Tip: order from their own website opposed to ordering third party, they do charge more over there Service: They're incredibly nice and homey Ambiance: It was a nice underground restaurant, they have an accessible ADA elevator as well Combo Valenciano $9 (4/5): this is such a steal for a cheap meal in SF. It comes with fried rice, quarter of a rotisserie chicken, salad, and 2 sauces. The chicken was well seasoned, some parts of the chicken tasted dry. The salad was whatever, it tasted like a light cole slaw. The green creamy sauce complimented the dish well but the sweet n sour sauce was alright. The fried rice was good. Definitely coming back here again, this restaurant is definitely built by love especially in their meals

Yelp
For the pricepoint, portion size, and flavor this is one of those rare 5's for me! The only slight drawback for me would be the parking (although we got very lucky) and a slight nervousness walking around in the neighborhood. The service was very friendly, and though the restaurant was a bit empty when we arrived around 5:30 on Saturday it quickly filled up with lots of different patrons. I loved pretty much all the dishes we got. What stood out the most was the roasted chicken. I went for the dark meat and it was very tender. The green sauce is addicting with the arepas which otherwise are bland pancakes. I also very much enjoyed the grape pork ribs. The sweet and savory combination was delightful. The green beans had a kick to them and a ton of garlic that ended up lingering in my mouth for many hours later so would not eat those if you are going to a function you have to talk quite a bit. The only thing I didn't enjoy as much was the flan because it was a little too dense for me but that's probably because I prefer light custards. I would definitely recommend trying them out!

Yelp
So happy I got to try Cantoo with my friends! Great discovery and an awesome spot that has delicious food, very affordable price points, and really nice staff/service! I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard this is a Venezuelan/Chinese fusion place, but the food did not disappoint. I went with 2 girlfriends and we ended up ordering the salted egg pumpkin, cucumber salad, half duck, half chicken, and the stir fry beef flat noodle between the 3 of us. The portions for the price for the duck and chicken were a great value. The duck was very juicy and flavorful and the chicken was good as well. The waitresses helping us were also super nice and sweet, and made us feel super welcomed at the store. The only thing I'd say to watch out for is that the restaurant isn't located in the nicest part of town, so you'd just have to be a little careful in the area. Otherwise, it's definitely a place I'd come back to and recommend to friends!

Yelp
This Chinese Venezuelan addition to the TL is out of this world. Perfectly marinated chicken, bomb fried rice, served in a homey mom and pop atmosphere. The Latin music is lively adding to the fun vibes. Very sweet Asian family that owns and manages the restaurant. Every meal feels like it's cooked and sprinkled with love, which I find to be a rare quality found these days. My go tos are the Pollo Valenciano (whole roasted chicken) and the Arroz Especial, which never disappoint. Special shout out to Christina, you're awesome. Keep up the great work and your sunny disposition. Thanks to Jose too! Cordial and efficient.

Yelp
Was in the area, craving soup on a rainy day, so decided to order pickup. WHen the order was ready, quickly parked outside, ran in to grab it, and left. There is street parking on the road but note the signage as I almost got a ticket for a random 4-6pm no parking. About 15 min to get home and the food held up well. Crema de maiz is one of my favorite dishes here. A comforting corn soup that is enough for two people to share. Sweet and sour pork chops is another favorite dish. Their sweet and sour sauce is unlike any other. It's not overly sweet. More like savory and lightly sweet. Best sweet and sour I've had. Meat is tender. Tried their fried cheese for the first time which was a delicious side dish. A block of lightly fried cheese that is kinda like eating a string cheese in texture, but better. Always gotta get their homemade limeade which is refreshing and sweet. While I typically dine in here, ordering to go pick up was convenient and just as good.

Yelp
Got some food to-go: Combo Valencio: 3.5/5 The fried rice was okay but I do wish it had a bit more umami or salt (personal preference). The rotisserie chicken was perfectly juicy and salty though! The accompanying coleslaw was a refreshing break from the savory dish. Sweet & Sour Pork Chop; 4.7/5. More sweet than sour. Either way, it was good! Very tender pork enveloped by a crunchy flavorful batter. Vegetarian Lumpia: 2/5. Filled with vermicelli and mushrooms. This was really lacking in any flavor; I wish there was some sort of dipping sauce to go with it. Otherwise the skin was nice and crisp! Hot & Sour Soup: 2/5. The spice really overpowered every other flavor typically found in a hot & sour soup. Empanada de Carne Molida: 4/5. Nice thick dough, and a pocketful of yummy juicy beef. Service: Customer service was rather curt but not downright rude or anything. Overall: Not sure I'd eat here again. The quality of food was either a hit (the Venezuelan food) or a miss (the Cantonese food) and the customer service was just okay. Not to mention parking is pretty difficult in this area.

Yelp
4 days of eats in SF and we came here twice for lunch with two different mates. Enjoyed it immensely. There is something for everyone here including a wide variety of proteins! I went with the roast pork and rice both days and added in a side of plantains. I joked that the plantains were how my Asian mom would make as they were lightly pan fried and not deep fried the way Cubans or Puerto Ricans make them. Staff was friendly although on the second day slow- could be they were short staffed. Plenty of seating. Do be mindful of your surroundings coming in.

Yelp
First time at Cantoo and excited to try the Venezolano/Chinese fusion. We went on a Thursday night for dinner and there were a few people, dining and plenty of seating. We were sat down immediately. We ordered the croquetas de camaron, the combo Valenciano we had seen on TikTok and the noodles with roasted duck. Everything is price pointed pretty decently and I would say the food tasted very "home-y) like my mom making food. Our croquetas came out first and were fresh and hot. The waitress told us to pair with their sweet and sour sauce. They also have a green aioli sauce and we put that on our chicken and noodles and the aioli brought out more of of the smokiness in the rotisserie chicken. I really enjoyed the fusion of flavors and am excited to try more menu options. We saw so many workers picking up DoorDash so we can see the place is well known.

Yelp
Cheap Hidden Gem with Great Variety: Nestled in the outer streets of the Tenderloin is a Latin American fusion, with more options than anyone can decide from. We were a group of 4 coming in to dine on a Friday night. No wait, plenty of seating available, and the staff were super friendly. We started with the lumpias, a freshly made delicacy that immediately told us that we're in for a treat. The real stars were the two sauces they kept at the table - one red, tamarind sauce and one green, cilantro yogurt sauce. We couldn't get enough. For the main course, we had their mixed meat plate, fried rice, and singaporean noodles. The meat quality was great, the chicken being the best, followed by their steak, and the pork chops being forgettable. The yuccan fries and corn chips were an excellent touch to balance the meal. Overall, we ordered more than we could chew and for 4 large adult men, the total only came up to $120 with drinks. We will definitely be returning

Yelp
Very unique (for this part of the world), Chinese Venezuelan food. Seems like the rotisserie chicken is the most popular thing to get. Though the appetizers are really interesting too. Croqueta de Cangreos: Looks pretty cool for sure, unlike other Chinese appetizers. Though it seemed overly bready and all that dough really soaked up the frying grease. Plus the inside was fake crab. Though the sweet and sour dipping sauce was nice. Empanada con Pabellón: Looks more Venezuelan than Chinese. Chewy fried empanada dough with shredded beef, black beans and cheese inside. The green creamy sauce on the table went really well with this. Rotisserie Chicken - Combo Valenciano: One of the best deals in town. Deliciously marinated tender roast chicken. Lots of flavorful fried rice. Plus some really nice sauces. The popular agridulce and a nice creamy garlic sauce. Pollo Agridulce: Apparently one of those most popular Chinese dishes in Venezuela. It reminds me of orange chicken, but a lot more red looking. Definitely more sweet than sour, though there are some subtle sour undertones. Really liked the crispy texture, which softens a little under the nice glaze. Perhaps a tad high in sodium, since I was quite thirsty for a few hours afterwards. Arroz Especial: Like the veggie fried rice that came with the rotisserie chicken, but with some meat chunks in the mix too. Lots of flavor. Enough meat to be noticeable, but not so much that it clashes as a side to a meat dish.

Yelp
We tried Cantoo after seeing Aziz Ansari at the Curran Theater. For starters, it is great to know of restaurants that are open after 9pm in San Francisco, as the options seem to slim significantly after that hour. I tried the Chuleta Ahumada con Arroz, while my partner tried the Cucumber Salad and Empanada de Pabellón, and my friend had the combo vegetariano. The Chuleta Ahumada was fantastic. The pork chop was incredibly juicy and had a wonderful smoky flavor. The plate also came with a huge portion of rice and french fries. For only $16, I felt this dish was an incredible steal, as it has been one of the best things I've eaten all year. My partner liked the cucumber salad, which was refreshing with a nice kick of spice. She also loved the Empanada de Pabellón, which she said was nice and crispy on the outside with a flavorful beef filling on the inside. Finally, my friend liked the combo vegetariano a lot, especially the lumpia. We all also enjoyed the sauces that came complementary with the table, especially the garlic aioli. Sadly, I forgot to take pictures of our meal. Highly recommend this place. Incredibly flavorful food with great prices. Service was also very prompt and friendly. We'll certainly be back!

Yelp
Sometimes I travel so I can immerse myself in the local cuisines and traditions. And other times I find local restaurants that remind me of those odysseys. My first pilgrimage to Cantoo Latin Asian Rotisserie let me wander and explore two cuisines and countries at the same time - Venezuela and China. I can hardly wait to go back. I stopped off on my way to see Richard Thompson at the Fillmore. The menu is pretty extensive and there are so many different soups, appetizers, rotisserie chickens, B.B.Q. pork ribs dishes and clay pots. The list and unique combinations were endless and a bit overwhelming. I ordered a Empanada con Carne Mechada: Deep fried corn flour empanada with Venezuelan shredded beef. and Chili Oil Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings: Home made pork dumplings! Made from scratch, starting from grinding the meat, to seasoning the filling of the dumplings. Both were so good. The Empanada had flavors of sweet corn filled with a rich shredded beef. The Pork Dumplings were fresh and tasty. The chili oil gives the dumpling's the right amount of heat and made my tongue sing. Service was so kind, friendly and efficient. I know I just scratched the surface of this gem. While located in the Tenderloin, the street is alive with people and automobiles. I felt completely safe. Matt says if you are anywhere near O'Farrell St - maybe near Union Square or on your way to the Great American Music Hall, take a Lyft or the 38 (R) Muni and let yourself travel to China and Venezuela and explore the amazing and creative foods of those countries.

Yelp
TLDR: Fusion done right! Well controlled flavors, JUICY chicken, and all at an affordable price tag! - - - - - - I was introduced to Cantoo by a friend and was I pleasantly surprised! I wasn't sure what to expect but was glad to have a thorough description in Cantonese, eventually settling on their C1 (Combo Valenciano) and G1 Empanada de Pobellon (w/ stewed shredded beef, black beans, cheese). The initial interaction was comical when the staff member placed a pitcher of water without a cup. A cup was later provided, and once the Combo Valenciano arrived, I deconstructed it like a child playing with their food. The chicken was tender, JUICY - imagine very moist but not soggy - brined well with a crispy skin. Their green sauce had garlic and may be inspired by the Cantonese ginger scallion dipping oil, and their red sauce was a sweet and sour sauce - both very yummy! Beside the chicken laid their vegetarian fried rice, similar to Cantonese "soy sauce king" fried rice, and did that have a noticeable "wok air." Even the coleslaw - a dish I don't often enjoy - was very enjoyable here, the flavors light, dressing appropriate and not drenched. Chicken drumsticks are my least favorite and even that was gobbled up! Their Empanada de Pobellon was delicious as well, with the shredded beef having a tender texture and feel. What's amazing was how this was left out for 30 minutes, and it tasted as if it were still fresh out of the oven! Overall, impressive service and control of flavors. The perfect and light seasoning of many dishes is reminiscent of traditional Cantonese accents.

Yelp
Absolutely love Cantoo - all of the empanadas here are fantastic and the service is run by the kindest people ever. I've never had Venzuelan and Chinese fusion food, but the combination is absolutely excellent. I have no complaints about any of the dishes here and it's all actually incredibly affordable too! They even threw in a few free Venezuelan limeades for our group when we visited (we were the last customers and it was quite late at night). You can really taste the love and effort they put into every dish! Wish I could visit again.

Yelp
Great price and portions, the hot and sour soup was the best I've had in the Bay Area! So worth it

Yelp
I love this spot!!! Such a good mix of amazing flavors, great value, and quantity of food. Come with a large group to try everything! My favorites were the salted egg yolk pumpkin, the yucca fries, and the chicken. Other things that were good but didn't hit the spot: sweet and sour soup, and the beef lo mein. Would definitely come back again

Yelp
Tasty and interesting meal for inexpensive! We got a soup, a plate, empanda, and 2 drinks for around $35! The neighborhood can be dicey so be careful but worth visiting this family owned spot for a unique bite to eat!

Yelp
Great hospitality, delicious wide selection of dishes. Tried many dishes and were all on point and authentic. Staff is very nice and accommodating. Also open later than most restaurants.

Yelp
I was recommended this place by a person I sat next to on a plane who lives in Soma and said this was his favorite restaurant and I had to try it. It is super unique since it is Venezuelan and Chinese. The family who runs this spot migrated to Venezuela from China a long time ago and then moved to the U.S. and brought their great unique menu with them. The watermelon and strawberry juice were refreshing. The food was not just unique but also delicious. The owner/daughter waited on us was super friendly and attentive. I wish them all success. Note that it is the Tenderloin so plan accordingly.

Yelp
Found this place on IG. Then came on here and looked at the reviews and more photos. I was sold! Decided to ask my mom if she was up to trying to place for Mother's Day. She agreed, she too was intrigued by the latin/asian fusion. Decided we would celebrate Mother's Day on the Saturday before the day to try to beat the rush of people. Had my daughter make reservations for 2PM for a party of 12, 2 weeks prior. We were running late so had my daughter ask around 1PM if we could push our reservations to 3 and they were accommodating. Beware this place is in the heart of the Tenderloin. So if you are scared or iffy about that then don't bother. There is street parking and a parking garage within comfortable walking distance. Although it is in the Tenderloin the outside is a little misleading. You walk down a few stairs and into a restaurant that seems totally misplaced. So light, airy, well lit and they really figured out a great layout to get as much seating as possible. You can tell the table they reserved for us was like 4 tables pushed together down the center of the venue. We were seated immediately. We were greeted upon entering. Drink orders were taken and then we were given a few minutes to look over the menu. Typically when dining with my mother and husband we do it family style and my mom and I are in charge of ordering. Appetizer: (we pretty much ordered 2 of everything and had them just place one each on each end of the table) 1. Cucumber salad: fresh, crunchy and a hint of spice. 2. Spicy fried calamari and non-spicy calamary: It was crispy but they used such large pieces of the calamari steak. There were no tentacles parts. 3. Salted Egg Pumpkin: Cuts of tender pumpkin battered in a salted egg batter. It was like pumpkin tempura with a hint of egg flavor in the end. 4. 6 Empanada con Carne Mechada: Beef was seasoned well and there was a great amount of filling to pastry ratio. Pastry was flaky and yummy. Large enough to share 1 with another person. 5. 2 Empanada con Queso: Deliciously ooey gooey. 6. Chili Oil Pan Fried Dumplings: It was good but we could have did without. Entrees: 1. Stir Fry Beef Flat White Rice Noodle: Think beef chow fun. Yummy! 2. Yanchow Fried Rice: It was giving. 3. Arroz Special: Their house fried rice. What it needed to be. 4. Salted garlic pea shoots: Vibrant in color and garlicky. Yum! 5. Mapo Tofu: for my son whom said it was delicious. They made it special and omitted the meat. 6. Cantoo Tri Set: This is a must and beautifully done. Everything was juicy when needed to be and crispy where needed to be. 7. Pollo Valenciano: whole rotisserie chicken. It was good, don't know if we would order it again though. It seemed to be the least liked dish on the table. 8. Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs: Plenty in one order and nicely seasoned and breaded. 9. Parilla Venezolana: A platter of grilled meats. Skirt steak, pork chop, sausage and I think it was tripa. Also on the chopping block with the meat was some arepitas and yucca fries. We all ate until we were stuffed and even split the left overs. For a party of 12 and all the food I listed (x2) our bill came out to like $350. Decent for the amount of food we ordered and how delicious it was. Everyone kept asking who found the restaurant. As if they all don't know this is what I do...look for places for us to try. Nothing like breaking bread with family!

Yelp
First of all the restaurant is pretty big inside. I had the sweet and sour pork chop and Sancocho (Small) (Friday and weekends only). The sweet and sour dish is extremely good, very soft and flavorful. It taste just like the Cantonese one, but lighter less heavy. The soup is also very good never had the soups before but it very good. It's was a small order but the container looks like a Large size at other restaurants. Definitely will come here again.

Yelp
Walked from the Asian Art Museum so I worked up an appetite. Everything on the menu looked so good but I finally settled on satisfying my fried chicken and French fries craving. Even though these were shoestring fries they had the right seasoning and crunchiness to them. The chicken was still so moist. The house fried rice was enough to fill me up. I had the rest as leftovers. The service was patient and filled up my water cup frequently. Cool music playing in the restaurant.

Yelp
Really solid, came with one friend and got quickly seated. The options are plentiful and everything we got was delicious! The roast duck, and chili oil dumplings were the star of the show in my opinion and my friend really like the roasted pork as well. While it's not in the best part of town, it is a hidden little spot that I would love to return to

Yelp
Update: Always a pleasure coming to Cantoo! And I think I've been here at least a half dozen times. Food is always good! The owner still remembers us. She's very sweet! We brought a friend to try the food and he was impressed. He even wants to tell his other friends about Cantoo! Despite the area, we are comfortable inside the restaurant. We ordered roughly the same things as before but tried a new dish. POLLO VALENCIANO ~ Whole roasted chicken served with cole slaw and arepas The chicken is tasty and even the white meat is moist! And the arepas taste really good with their garlic sauce! YUMMY!!! I normally do not like cole slaw but their slaw is refreshing. 5/5 SAUTÉED GARLIC PEA SPROUTS ~ Tender greens with roasted garlic. We've ordered pea sprouts in many restaurants. Those stems need to be cut, but some restaurants don't cut them! Cantoo does it right and serves you the best parts! 5/5 GRAPE PORK RIBS ~ Sweet fried ribs on a grill. It reminds me of Korean fried chicken without being spicy. You get some crispy parts with a sweet glaze. New for us! Pretty good, just that I felt there was more bone than meat...still tasty! 4/5 ROASTED DUCK VERMICELLI ~ Shredded duck with vermicelli rice noodles with pickled mustard greens. I noticed this time there was more of everything in this dish! Lots of veggies, duck, and bright colors! Good flavor as well! 5/5 LIMEADE ~ Very sweet drink! I had to add more than a cup of water as I don't care to have things super sweet. After diluting it, it was much better. I think I would have liked to taste the tartness of the limes. It makes it more refreshing that way. 3/5 We had leftovers to take home too! I find it affordable eating at Cantoo! Can't wait to come back again! Highly recommended!!

Yelp
I've been here twice and each time did not disappoint. Their portions and price is worth it alone. Rotisserie Chicken: Cooked very well and has so much flavor. The green sauce pairs with it so well. Empanadas: Pretty good and flavorful. Fried rice (Arroz): Huge portion and again pairs well with the green sauce. Wonton noodle soup: Maybe since it was take out, but the noodles were soggy. Soup and wonton were average. Dumplings in chili oil: Solid Salted Egg Pumpkin: My family loved this and it was gone within seconds.

Yelp
Their dumplings w chili oil was really good and also reasonably priced, i would order it again. I didn't like the mafo tofu - the meats in it tasted like vegan.

Yelp
A unique restaurant fusion of Latin Venezuelan and Asian. My friend and I shared the food since that was a lot of food. The waitress did tell us that this was not the traditional A4. Croquetas de Camarones 虾卷 (5pc) was Deep fry egg roll with chicken and shrimp paste, but we were open to try something different. It was too much deep fried and oily. It wasn't what we were expecting. But the waitress did tell it wasn't made like way we were expecting or the original way other places make it. In reading reviews I made sure to get the A13. Salted Egg Pumpkin 金沙南瓜 A mixture of different textures: first crunchy (deep fried breaded layer), second soft (the pumpkin itself), and last creamy (the salted egg paste) which was very tasty and perfect flavors. Yummy in my tummy. The popular item we selected was the C1. Combo Valenciano 巴伦西亚套餐 that comes with a quarter house signature rotisserie chicken (contains beer), vegetarian fried rice, Venezuelan style coleslaw, and house sauces. This was an ok dish and I did want a rice dish since I ate too many noodles earlier in the week. The chicken wasn't as tender as I was hoping for. I enjoyed the coleslaw and rice. I think next time I will stick with the Venezuelan dishes. There are not many places that have Venezuelan-Chinese cuisine. I will have to come back to try a noodle dish or another rice dish and a maybe a fish appetizer. This is definitely a hole in the wall. If we didn't go to the Asian Art Museum on Sunday, we would never have found this place. Sunday was a slow day, we were I think second patrons there. Service was a bit on slow side. When leaving there were more people eating as you can see in my photos.

Yelp
My friends came here on a Saturday around 7pm, there was no wait we were seated right away! Cantoo is a mix of Chinese and Venezuelan food so we wanted to try both. We ordered empanadas, salted egg yolk pumpkin, fried rice, a meat platter, and some chili oil dumplings. My favorites were the empanadas and the dumplings. The empanadas itself were huge and packed with lots of filling and flavor. They were the tastiest empanadas I've ever had! The chili oil dumplings were perfectly pan fried and had a good numbing chili taste. The fried rice was very tasty and not super salty. The meat platter was nothing too special in my opinion. The salted egg yolk pumpkin had too much bread filling on the outside and I couldn't quite taste the salted egg that well.

Yelp
I recently visited San Francisco for work and decided to stay behind for a few solo days of food and exploring. Throughout my research, I continued to come across Cantoo as a recommendation. Venezuelan Chinese food? Say less. The story of the owner and one look at the pics and reviews of the food sold me. When mapping out my trip, I realized that the restaurant wasn't far a far walk from my hotel so I planned to grab some food there before I made my way to the airport. It's really an unassuming location, even though I was using gps I still almost missed it. When I entered I was taken back by how spacious it was in there! There were two other parties seated inside and I was quickly taken to a cozy table in the dining room. I started my meal off with a Frescolita, which my waiter said was a Venezuelan staple. This was one of the best soda flavors I've ever had! I'm still dreaming of it. I had been staring at the menu online for weeks, but still found myself struggling to order irl. Everything sounded delicious! But I thought it best if I made sure to taste a bit of each culture and went with the Combo Valenciano. This $9, (yes, NINE BUCKS!) includes: qtr of the signature rotisserie chicken, veggie fried rice, coleslaw and their signature sauces. Minutes later, my to go plate was hot and ready for me to dig in. Although I had plans to head to the airport soon, I had to take a moment to take it all in. First, the portions were wonderful. The quarter bird is usually perfect for me but when I tell you how good it was, you'll see that you should order more than I did. The coleslaw was yummy and super crisp. The rice was SO GOOD, wow. Especially with the sauces. And the chicken. Don't get me started on the chicken! A bit crispy on the outside and so juicy and flavorful inside, it paired well with the sauces and rice . I can't believe that any of it actually made it to the airport with me. Phenomenal service and incredible flavor for less than $12. I need to get some Cantoo mailed to Atlanta!

Yelp
Delicious Chinese and Venezuelan comfort food in huge portions! It's a casual happy family vibes place but plenty of seating with lively music. Every dish we ate had tons of flavor and they don't skimp on meat! The empanadas were our favorite - huge and freshly fried stuffed with filling. If you like salted egg yolk, the pumpkin is a must try too! The chili oil dumplings were huge and had really nice mala spiciness. The service was really good too and staff were all working hard serving everyone. Their menu is really extensive and they have a variety of vegetarian and vegan options too. The restaurant itself is located closer to the union square side of tenderloin, so it's not too sketchy outside. We were so full after our meal and for a super reasonable price. I'll definitely be returning to try even more dishes!

Yelp
When you walk into the restaurant, there are steps that will take you down to the sitting area. Seats are nicely spread out this you don't need to worry about sitting too tightly to each other. There seems to be only one server who bring food to you and take your order. Pork and shrimp wonton soup.Soup came with 6 wontons and 3 branches of broccoli. Soup has a nice black pepper taste, but the soup itself is a bit too salty. Upon taking in the bite, no shrimp was found and the pork itself had bits of hard to chew pieces mixed inside. Pork tasted very bland and rubbery without much seasoning. The only thing I can taste is the salt coming from the soup. Broccoli has been soaked for too long causing it to lose its initial crunch which has now turned into a soggy branch. C4: roasted pork over rice. Had high expectations for the roast pork, but when the plate arrived, my face already began losing its joy. I saw the plate and asked myself " why is the roast pork so lean?" As someone who has tried many roast porks, the ideal mixture of fat should be 30-45% and the remaining would be meat. The roast pork shown today was 5% fat and the remaining are dry meat. I took my first bite in and as expected , the meat was cold, dry, and very bland. I had to take a cup of water just to wash the meat down. Rice had a good portion. You might say to me "if the meat is dry, why don't you dip it in the sauce". The sauce was distasteful. If I mix the meat into the sauce, I don't think I can finish my meal.

Yelp
Gosh, I think this was at least the fourth iteration of a restaurant I've tried in this semi-subterranean space on O'Farrell. I remember Golden Era Vegetarian was here for a while before they moved into their space on Golden Gate Avenue. Then there was a Uyghur restaurant called Eden Silk Cuisine followed by the explicitly named A Bowl of Chicken Soup and Rice Noodles. That's a lot of identity turnover. Now it's become a hybrid Chinese and Venezuelan place. I don't think I've had Venezuelan food before much less with Chinese food in the mix. While they offered some traditional Chinese dishes and even empanadas, the headliner here was the rotisserie chicken, and since this was my first visit, I went with the $9 Combo Valenicano. That turned out to be quite a deal (photo: https://yelp.to/GjRElqnSQQ). I got a quarter chicken, Venezuelan cole slaw, and a huge portion of vegetarian fried rice. The chicken was slightly overcooked but not criminally so, and the fried rice overwhelmed the plate. Not knowing what a feast $9 would get me, I ordered the $7 Crema de Maiz (Chicken Corn Soup), which was a huge bowlful of hot comfort (photo: https://yelp.to/12URkp8ZZk). This one warrants a return visit...if it doesn't change identities again! FOOD - 4 stars...plentiful portions and the chicken was pretty tasty AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...looks the same as it did before with big booths SERVICE - 4 stars...manager was very attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...hope this one sticks around RELATED - Exploring the Tenderloin? Yelp
Cantoo was a caterer at a recent event I attended. Their food stood out even amongst multiple food, beverage, and entertainment options. They brought noodles, skewers, empanadas, chicken, and more. They had this absolutely delicious green sauce. I told them that day, and I'll say it again, that they need to bottle it up and sell it. I'd put it on everything! The staff were super friendly and helped make recommendations for what to try. I really appreciated the vegan and vegetarian options! Would love to visit their restaurant to try more of the menu.

Yelp
I've heard a lot of good things about Cantoo and this was my first time trying Venezuelan food, so I was really excited. I ordered from Doordash and got the pabellon. Everything came packaged really well and portions were generous. I really liked how tender and rich in flavor the stewed beef was. The entree came with rice and black beans, which I felt were decent/standard, nothing out of this world. There were also fried plantains, which were made salty. I usually like my plantains sweet, but it was nice to try. I want to come back to try other items on their menu since I saw there were a lot of dishes I wasn't familiar with and I love trying new things.

Yelp
This is a nice little restaurant with an interesting Asian/latin fusion. We tried the sweet and sour chicken, the rotisserie chicken plate, the pork wontons in chili oil, and a beef empanada. Everything was good but I would definitely pass on the empanada if I were to come again. The wontons were definitely a must try, and I thought the sweet and sour chicken was way better than the rotisserie chicken. Overall the prices are extremely affordable, and the service was amazing. Definitely a solid lunch or dinner option!

Yelp
I'm staying in the Union Square area for a work meeting and wanted to find something tasty nearby but not too pricey or fancy. Reviews of Cantoo Latin Asian Rotisserie suggested they had some interesting and well priced roasted meats and Chinese and Latin infused preparations so I headed over to try them out. Sadly this portion of O'Farrell Street starts to get a bit sketchy but if you go during daylight and don't mind the immediate neighborhood this place was actually very good and quite steadily busy with fair prices and decent food. I got a half roasted duck for $16 ! Okay, it was a little fatty and could have been rendered off better but it was a decent portion for a terrific price. They also had empanadas that were delicious and only $6 for a shredded beef version that when you add their garlic creamy sauce (on the table in a big squeeze bottle) was excellent. I also wanted to try their pork belly and I got a portion on a skewer for $7 and it was just okay. They had an excellent flan for dessert ($6) which resulted in a very filling meal for a decent price. Interesting place and all the plates coming out of the kitchen looked ample and priced fairly. Worth another visit when in the area and they are open and serving until 10 PM. Recommended.

Yelp
I haven't dabbled in the empanadas world too much, thought I should as where I am from has great options, but the ones closest to me aren't great. Fast forward to my recent trip to the city, and going out of my comfort zone, I was able to try a few from Cantoo, and they totally changed my perspective on empanadas! They were cooked so well, that they were the perfect texture so you can taste not only their encasing but the ingredients inside. The sauces were also a star of the show! The creaminess mixed with the savory flavors of the chicken, 5 stars all the way!

Yelp
Knock my socks off, why don't you. Cantoo Latin Asian Rotisserie is reason enough to book a flight to San Francisco. This is one of those meals I'll be thinking about for years to come. In fact, if I ever get married, invite #1 belongs to Cantoo. While I haven't had the privilege of visting their storefront, I recently sampled Cantoo's menu at a hosted event. They served a variety of their empanadas, mini arepas, and cooked meats. Their Venezuelan empanadas and creamy green sauce have engraved themselves in my brain. These empanadas are filled with the juiciest meat, with options like pabellón, carne molida, and chicken. The chicken was my personal favorite. Don't let the Tenderloin scare you away. Cantoo is what your stomach's dreams are made of.
