Recently saw CATS at the Canyon Theatre Guild. Such a great venue providing an intimate feel. Wherever you sit, you have a great view. The staff and cast are very friendly. The theatre is also located in a great area full of bars, restaurants, stores and more. I highly recommend seeing a show here.

Overall great show. Ella has a magnificent voice and plays her role with heart. Not sure why a fairy tale has to be “modernized” with politics. Kids love the wonders of fairy tales. It made the second Act too long, at times even on the edge of boring….

Tonight 3 of us went to see West Side Story and it was superb! The acting, voices, choreography and sets were all top notch. This performance had a free wine and champagne reception and we each really enjoyed our drinks. Bottled water was $1.00. The bathrooms were immaculate with fresh cut flowers. The temperature was perfect and we could take off our coats. The staff was friendly and helpful. Hurry and go see it as it ends next weekend!

Our experience at the Canyon Theatre was wonderful. The production, acting, singing and choreography were superb! We have already invited several folks to get tickets for next weekend!

First time at the theater in years and realized I have been missing out. Big time! Saw West Side Story & was brought to tears a few times by the power of the performances and the significance of the story. Congratulations to all and thank you for creating a moving, spiritual moment in this season of such turmoil and pain.

Girls night we saw West Side Story, a small theatre, great venue and the cast was awesome! Staff was friendly, snacks were reasonable, you can bring your own water bottle. Have dinner at nearby restaurants, shops. Luv Main Street makes you feel like you’re in a small town America.

Saw a performance of “Beehive: The 60s Musical” here. We were entertained. Some of the singers were very good. Others not so much. But overall still a fun time for my wife and me! Would definitely recommend going to support the local arts…just don’t expect Broadway 💫

Just a wonderful day at the theater and the play was one of the most enjoyable times I've had. From management to production, the canyon theater guild makes our community a little better. Today is March 23rd of 2025 and we just went and saw the play cats and it was absolutely wonderful. The acting and the music and the choreography was just a wonderful way to spend the day and a wonderful compliment to be added to this community.

Yelp
I've been to many plays and drama acts from my past. The only reason I know of this place is because of someone I know named Zony Gordon. She's an artist who creates painting in newhall and her exhibits are always around or inside of this Guild theater. Now, my sister knows one of the performers who is a lead in various acts and I started to become more aware of the talent of these artists. I enjoy them more than movies because it is real acting in person and the people here are quite skilled in singing, dancing and acting as a whole and I question why they aren't in movies or even tv shows. Hell, even in Hollywood. I enjoyed the play "cats" today as I have seen it many times probably 7 or 8 times at pantages, cruise ships and other drama club events. Now, the one here is exceptional although some of the dancers were out of breath when dancing in some scenes and more or less slower than the original. I own the movie and merchandise for this play. I've seen "little shop of horrors" "phantom of the opera" "hairspray" "Annie" "sound of music" "lion king" and many others, but "cats" is my favorite of them all. The costumes, dancing, music and scenery are amazing. "Rum tug tugger" is my favorite character as I played him myself during my high school days play of "cats". he's hot with a tight body. I have my idol in my profile picture. The ticket prices are reasonable although I wish it was cheaper as it once was 15- 20 years ago at $10 or so. Nowadays they are around $25 per person and seniors/kids are slightly less maybe like $18 depending on the show and season. The only issue I had was that the online ticket purchases are complex and once I submitted my transaction, it basically charged me four times instead of once. So I was paying x4 of the original price. I love the interior and you are able to take pictures with the performers after. I've done this plenty of times before. Better watching the play more so than a movie and also meeting up with characters after the show. I don't think the actors enjoyed it but it's their job to take pictures with guests. When I went, the age range of people seeing the show are basically 75+. I felt like I was the youngest person there. A lot of younger audiences probably go clubbing or go to high end shows elsewhere. Newhall is not a great area to be in and pretty scary at times. The area of the place is especially scary at night because I was driving around at midnight in this area and I saw a man pointing his finger at the sky for 45 minutes straight. Other than that, the daytime it is peaceful and newhall really upped their game with the variety of different events that can be done here. You get a nice theater and ambiance along with many different activities that show up on the weekend.

Yelp
great cozy little venue at the end of Main Street in Old Town Newhall right next to plenty of restaurants and watering holes and a parking garage. Friendly, courteous staff on hand.

Yelp
Very pleased with the obvious hard work and dedication that this theater guild shows. My wife and I had never been. Last Saturday afternoon we saw their Christmas Story. The venue is nice and cute and friendly. The theater is fairly decent sized and in good repair, welcoming looking. The technology (lighting/rigging) looks modern and adequate, and the show we saw bore that estimate out in fact. The actors ranged from newer studies to wonderful old hands, and the director clearly cast them each well suited to their tasks and stations (inside joke). Everyone did a great job and clearly put in the work. I would in particular recommend their stage adaptation of Christmas Story, but this review is one about the theater guild itself so I'll just say "yeah you should see it, very nice!" I believe this group deserves our support, and for those of you who are theater fans and have a few idle coins clinking around in your pockets, membership. My wife is interested in getting more involved with them, which I encouraged.

Yelp
Canyon Theater Guild, nestled in the heart of Old Town Newhall, is a charming little theater that offers a unique blend of history, community, and art. Its quaint 19th-century aesthetic aligns perfectly with the surrounding area, giving patrons a feeling of stepping back in time. The theater's small size, with a seating capacity of 288, creates an intimate atmosphere that allows for a more personal connection with the performances. They have great seats for handicap access and any seat is a great seat in the house. In terms of concessions, the offerings are basic yet affordable, with items such as water priced at just $1. This simplicity adds to the overall appeal of the venue, keeping the focus on the theatrical performance. The staff were super friendly. The plays I've attended at Canyon Theater Guild have been consistently enjoyable, with commendable acting for a local theater. While some actors may lack the range you'd find in larger productions, their performances are heartfelt and genuine, reflecting the community spirit that embodies the theater. However, to fully appreciate what Canyon Theater Guild has to offer, it's essential to approach it with the right mindset. This isn't the Ahmanson; it's a local theater that thrives on community support and love for the arts. And in that regard, it delivers wonderfully. I've seen 3-4 plays there and each time, the experience was delightful. In conclusion, the Canyon Theater Guild is a gem in Old Town Newhall. It's a place where locals can come together to support and enjoy the arts, all within the ambiance of a charming, historical setting. note: you can have a a great afternoon on a matinee sunday in the area. Eat at one of the approximately 15 restaurants in the immediate walking area. Enjoy a glass of wine at the 2-4 wineries/wine rooms, and then have a matinee at the theater. Overall, a great way to have a nice sunday out. Also, they have a lot of productions that are kid friendly.

Yelp
I have been going to theatre here for almost 3 years. The directors are super kind, and the shows are always amazing. When signing up for the workshops, you get to watch a show for free with a companion. PLUS the workshops are just amazing in the first place. I participated in The Claw, Mystery at the Monster Prom, The Grunch, and many more. Right now I'm working on The Most Epic Birthday Party Ever, which is an original play and I definitely suggest watching the play. Overall, Canyon Theatre Guild is amazing and you should definitely watch their shows, or sign up for the workshops!

Yelp
We've seen two productions here and both times were great! The cast and crew put on wonderful shows... theatre is small and every seat has an awesome view of the stage. Prices are little high for local theatre but still worth it. Parking is easy on street right in front of theatre or in a nearby lot. We are excited to check out even more productions soon!

Great venue to take in a show and not a bad seat in the house! Go support all the creative and talented volunteers that put on the shows.

Yelp
We would like to Thank the wonderful folks at Canyon Theatre Guild! They were so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable! My friend and I went to our first live theatre show last night at the Guild, it was so awesome! We will be going back very soon! Enjoying a live performance has a special kind of magic that you only find in a charming theatre just like Canyon Guild! Wonderful evening! Laurie & Karen

Yelp
Wonderful community theater. Enjoyed all the plays we attended. Will start going regularly. Nice area for food and drinks close by. Good times.

Yelp
I don't attend a lot of community theatre and this area is not my community, but we did have a lovely time attending a recent show, Suite Surrender, a wonderfully lovely farce! The area surrounding the theatre is very cute, as it is the "arts district" in Newhall. While we felt slightly out of place as we were not regulars, no one treated us that way; it was just obvious as we did not know where anything was, lol! The people who checked us in were so very kind; the concessions employees were cordial, and everyone we encountered was so pleasant! The theatre itself is small, so every seat is good. The sound and lighting is great and, of course, the cast was so very good! Special shout-out to Michael Collins as Bernard Dunlap. The entire cast was so very good! We had a lovely afternoon and enjoyed a great piece of comedy!

Yelp
My parents have been supporting this place for over 20+ years. I go occasionally. Every seat is a good seat. Always fun and entertaining. Love to support local. Yesterday was my dads 90th bday and I told one of the girls. Thinking just a quick sweet mention instead they called him out and sang HBD. Best memory ever. Thank you for the best day ever! Great musical too!!!

Yelp
Not terrible for a small community theater. I brought my daughter to see The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe because she had just finished the book. Despite the minimalist set and costuming, she loved the show and we all had a good time. There was a mix of some very good acting and some mediocre acting and I probably would have been disappointed had this been downtown or in Hollywood, etc. But I didn't expect to be blown away, so it was enjoyable. Seating was adequate, but could use some upgrades. Cannot order online...have to order via phone or come to the box offfice.

What a gem! Lived down the street for 6 years never been here before. Tonight saw Gilligans Island with my oldest daughter. Such a nice change small local theater and throw back show. Yelp
Just saw an amazing performance of Matilda with my daughter. The main character was only ten, but she and the rest of the cast made it feel like a star-studded Broadway production.

Yelp
Knight's of the Improv Members of the Improv are talented. Some are rising stars it's important to note that the audience couldn't here what everyone on stage was saying. Wade is a very talented man, of that there is no question. Shakespear once said, "The play's the thing." Ergo make every performance like it was your last. Room for improvement, I will be sitting in the audience again.

Yelp
We have been season ticket holders for many years and always look forward to each play. Today we saw Buddy about the life of Buddy Holly. The singing was so amazing. We enjoyed all of the musicians. The saxophone player and the violin player were a special treat....all so talented. We all said that we want to see it again!!! We were all still talking about the play at dinner. They got a well deserved standing ovation. Will Riddle was so perfect as Buddy....great voice and so much energy! We love our charming theater and are very appreciative to everyone that works so hard to make this happen for our community.

Yelp
Great community theater. Not a bad seat in the house. I've seen several shows here & they have all been fun. You always have a good time here.

Season A.

Yelp
I've been to 3 performances at this theatre. Each one I was hoping would be better then the last but instead each one was worse. A lot of the classical plays I've grown to love they put they're own weird twists on them and in my opinion diminished and took away from how beautiful the plays normally are. On top of that I took some young people to see Oliver which is a wonderful classic and usually so fun to see but their play was so sexually suggestive and inappropriate we all had to walk out. Not kid friendly in my opinion AT ALL. I did call and speak with one of the directors in regards to my feelings on it and that maybe it should have at least been stated that parental guidances was needed for some of these shows but I was of course dismissed. The theatre is very small and feels a little invasive as well. Most of the acting wasn't best in my opinion although of course there are those that really stand out and are wonderful. Again these are my opinions and my review and my thoughts not everyone else's but it's food for thought if you're thinking about going.

Yelp
What a great theatre! We are 10 year members and have seen many shows but this past season with all the great musicals, has been outstanding. Can't wait to see more pim and Just $99 for a season ticket

Yelp
I was introduced to this by an actor who was singing at Starbucks. He said he was performing in The Little Mermaid at the College (which was a one-off, they are normally at this location) and it was great. While we were there, I looked at the flyer and saw they had an Addams Family play and for December were playing Christmas Story. At the Addams Family event, I decided to look into tickets for the full season and I'm glad we did. It's affordable entertainment, performed by very talented people who are passionate about putting on a good performance. It is immersive and is a pleasure to attend. Time is spent on rehearsal and the set. I think we're going to now be regular members for years to come.

Yelp
Read the other reviews...wow, people! What were you expecting of a small community theatre in the Santa Clarita Valley? With that said, here's my review. I like this little theatre. I realize the actors range from up-and-coming professionals to others for whom this is a passion, but are wise to have a day job. However, I like that you see people spanning a wide range of sizes and ages - and not all classically beautiful. That's life. I've enjoyed every production and marvel at the time and dedication of the crew and actors. The costumes and sets are well-done. This little theatre definitely attracts some talent on and off stage. We saw Singin' in the Rain yesterday and had a blast. The cast was great - highlights of the cast were Kathy and RJ. You can't beat the price. For a little over $100 you can be a Guild member and see something like 7 plays during a year. Wow! We paid $15 for our tickets yesterday - what a steal, even for a small community theatre. And ,you don't have to drive to LA! So, to those Yelpers who were expecting Broadway for a buck....either relax and enjoy what community theatre (like CTG) offers...or open your wallet and spring for tix to NYC and check out a real Broadway production. Pippin is back on Broadway and I hear it's fabulous. :)

Yelp
Enjoyed the ambiance. If you're a theater fan on a budget you can see a great production for not a lot of money. I think it's a great alternative to a movie for a date.

Yelp
An amazing pocket of theatre in Santa Clarita. I have seen two shows here. There is plenty of parking around the theatre. Just watch for signs to make sure it is not street sweeping. The staff at the theatre was extremely helpful and kind in helping my friends and I to our seats. I saw "Damn Yankees" and "Singin' in the Rain" and both shows had very talented performers that should be on Broadway. After the show the whole cast files into the lobby so you can congratulate your favorite performer and take a picture with them. They have good snacks in the lobby during intermission.

Gary C.

Yelp
The good: Never having been to CTG I was hopeful that last nights "You can't take it with you" would be fun and entertaining. It started well with nearby free parking and a CTG rep letting everyone know that season tickets were a very reasonable $90 including a free local newspaper subscription. It was nice the Director came out and spoke. That was the end of the good. The mediocre: The theater and seating is old but functional. If you are not tall you might have an issue seeing over those in front of you as the seats don't elevate much as you go up each row. I would not bring kids unless you are near the front. The actors were all quite decent. It was not their fault.... The bad: "You can't take it with you" was written in 1936 and it shows. Badly. Besides jokes that were of questionable taste 80 years ago, now they are just "huh?", like one about Mrs Roosevelt's looks. Couldn't someone have done some editing or revisions? The play was so boring my wife fell asleep less then 30 mins in. I was jealous. The frenetic pace could have been fun but was just annoying. Waiting for intermission was interminable. None of this helped by the A/C not kicking in until it was in the high 70's. Now for the ugly: The only two black characters were 1936 racial stereotypes. I won't get into details but, HELLO it's 2017! I was embarrassed to be there and to have given CTG money for these tickets. Verdict: We clearly had company in giving this play a very negative review as we saw other couples heading to our cars at intermission. The play got zero stars, theatre itself gets two stars, actors four stars. With that said, we will give CTG another try but will pay more attention to the play.

Yelp
We love this theatre and have been there now at least 10 times in the last couple of years. It is awesome, small, and most plays are fun, with great actors and even singing/dancing when they have a musical play. We really enjoy going there and have a bite to eat or drink before or after in old town Newhall which is very pretty. We like supporting historic places like this. Wonderful atmosphere! Cudos to all the actors!

Yelp
Did you know that CTG offers theatre workshops for children? They have longer sessions (about 10 week) during the year, and shorter "camp style" ones in the summer. My kids are currently in one of their homeschool workshops, and I am positively surprised with the quality of theater education they get! They are working on a play top to bottom - both on stage and backstage. They learn about all aspects of theater production, which is pretty cool in my opinion. And it's fun! They will have 8 performances, which is cool too. We saw one kid show by them that was great, I was impressed by the quality and decided to sign my own kids up to do one. So far we are extremely happy. Can't wait to see the final product!!

Amanda K.

Yelp
My three children have just completed their third Adventures in Theatre workshop with CTG and it is safe to say that we absolutely LOVE the program and the people who run it. My children each have their own unique personality and they have been embraced and encouraged by the adults and children alike. It has also been an incredible experience for me as a homeschool mom. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and making friends with the other families in this program and getting to be an integral part of the theatre production process from beginning to end. I think I may have learned just as much as my children have if not more. A big heartfelt thank you to John Lucewich and Jennifer Teague for being the biggest reason we can't wait to come back each season. You are both truly incredible mentors.
google avatar

Carlos V.

Yelp
With approximately over 100 First and Second graders waiting in the chilly wind outside the front door of this theater, nobody was there to help these poor kids. They charged each parent $5 for this. They have ruined the theater expirience for all these kids. I hope they refund those charges to each one of them.

Yelp
Last night my husband and I attended a performance of Baskerville, a Sherlock Holmes mystery at Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall. This is the second play we have attended since we purchased our season tickets. What a great find this theater is! Although the play itself is somewhat corny, the cast is, once again, fabulous! There are only 5 people in it. Two actors play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson and the other three take on the other roles, with at least five different personas each. Their bearings, British accents, etc. had the audience in stitches as they switched costumes, accents and voices from character to character. You must see this play for yourself because a description just doesn't do it justice. All I can say is talent, talent, talent and a great sense of humor to boot! The theater is small and the seats are raked so there isn't a bad seat in the house (except for the poor man at the end of our row whose seat broke when he sat down). This play runs September through November on weekends only. Season tickets are exceedingly reasonably priced. Our tickets as seniors ran $104 each for 9 plays, and subscribers who join in the middle of the season have a full year to attend.

James G.

Yelp
The Playhouse featured "That Lovin' Feelin'" Saw the play twice. A story about the Righteous Brothers duo. A wonderful story -- wonderful plot, great acting, a live band, beautiful girls, good directing, and best of all, very good singing memorable songs.. If you read this review in the next few days, you should definitely try to see this play. I wrote a review two years ago on the play, "Forever Plaid." Both plays were outstanding and received much applause throughout the performance. Consider buying a season ticket for nine plays. You will definitely get your money's worth. Canyon Theatre Guild always does an outstanding job on musical productions.
google avatar

Yelp
"Fox On The Fairway," YIKES, awful, awful, awful! Without question, it was the absolute worst play that I have ever seen. It was terribly miscast, poorly acted, embarrassing! The Theatre itself is very nice. We were with a group that rented out the venue for the evening -- hors d'oeuvres on the patio was lovely. Sorry, I'm sure the actors did the best that they could but I couldn't even crack a small smile -- it just wasn't funny or entertaining.

Yelp
I have attended dozens of plays at the Pantages and on Broadway (when I lived in N.Y). I had season tickets to the Civic Arts when I lived in Thousand Oaks. I have seen a LOT of plays, including this one previously. I attended the opening night of Forever Plaid and despite a fire alarm going off and the microphones shutting off for a period, this play was magnificiently performed. The four actors overcame hurdles that even the most seasoned actors might have stumbled over. We had a wonderful time, the theatre is charming and quaint and that area in Newhall has been all spruced up with some great restaurants. It made for a lovely post-theatre stroll. We ordered Season Tickets so we will be back in September. The bar is set pretty high, can't wait to see if it holds!

Kalyn V.

Yelp
I come to CTG for the workshops they have there. I'm currently doing my 4th musical, and let me tell you, this place deserves way more than 5 stars. The theatre is a 140 seat theatre with working lights, speakers, and curtains. The musicals they choose to do all have amazingly catchy music, fun characters, and great plots. Every director I've had was kind and caring. Every show I do I meet new people and make new friends. I'm so happy every time I enter the building and I count down the days I have until I start another musical here. The events they host are great, and when they perform the non-workshop shows it's stunning. I'll definitely be coming back for my 5th musical! (and 6th, and 7th, and- you get the point.)

Freebie C.

Yelp
This was the first visit for my family and I to this local theater. We had great seats, the acting included some notable performances, costumes and makeup were well done, but we just could not get past the lack of scenery. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe deserved the winter wonderland described in the original book. The story felt rushed, too; without intermission it was only 1 1/2 hours. Cheaper than the Glendale Center Theater, but cheaper isn't always better. Worth a second chance.
google avatar

Stan H.

Yelp
A bit run down and odorful, but with character. Fits right in with the theme of the entire city, being outdated and kind of removed from the modern world. The street it's on is charming and has some decent restaurants and eclectic stores. The play itself was ameteur theater and rather corny and that also fit in. I imagine everyone who frequents this theater and area knows what to expect and likes what is offered. Not me particularly, at least not enough to come back.
google avatar

Ray K.

Yelp
The CTG continues to amaze with great performances of both the popular and the obscure. From the production of Les Mis with over 80 cast members held at the PAC this past year, to the kids' workshops, the local CTG family just gets larger and more committed to excellence over time. I have been fortunate to have seen it all in action, first as an occasional audience member, then as a performer, and now as a friend, and the Canyon Theatre Guild on Main Street in Newhall is a terrific community institution. For a little non-profit organization in an economy that is particularly challenging to little non-profit orgs, this one delivers the goods. The season ticket is also one of the best deals in town!!

H H.

Yelp
No good. The acting was sub par & the musical transitions were so off it was painful... the music was SO loud & there wasn't long enough to allow for a fade, so it was an abrupt END. Lesson here... don't hire your friends and charge people money to come see them. Have them come free, the expectations will be more realistic.

Louise K.

Yelp
Great venue, fun plays with local actors I highly recommend going here. You will not be disappointed Ticket prices are very reasonable and the theater is lovely with parking nearby

Yelp
What a find. Very professional performances from this charming regional theatre group.

Yelp
I'd like to respond to Mike D.s comment. I am the Director of Youth Programs at the CTG. The Holiday Hollipalooza (sp?) is a wonderful fundraising event for the Canyon Theatre Guild Youth Theatre Institute. A total of 55 children were lovingly cast by director and creator John Lucewich -- a difficult job! Mr. Boydston had absolutely nothing to do with this effort. He is far too busy with his efforts to try to serve the people of Santa Clarita. This is a wonderful community event, produced by many hard-working volunteers, none of whom are Mr. Boydston. We don't play favorites -- ever, and we work as a team to create the magic of theatre. I encourage Mr Mike D. to rethink his position and research his facts. We'd love to have you back!

I love this place. Just saw The Christmas Carol with my whole family. They always put on a great show. You can't beat the price either.

Great location, easy to get to. Performances ok. You may find more variety and quality in the small Hollywood venues. Administratively very challenged. Executive Director doesn't return phone calls. For a non-profit one would think any opportunity to build membership would be welcomed.

Yelp
My shy daughter goes to theatre here with one of her friends and they love it so far. Great location and its got the wild west facade.
