Best Dim Sum Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"There are a number of Capital Seafood locations spread throughout Los Angeles and Orange County — each one with a different vibe, menu, and price. Capital Seafood Beverly Hills has the fanciest interior. Capital Seafood Monterey Park is the most affordable and still employs push carts. Capital Seafood Arcadia ranks as the supreme location with an upscale cart-less experience with favorites like spinach dumplings, mini egg tarts, and roast duck. And Capital Seafood Irvine is the most over-priced but carries typical dim sum like har gow, siu mai, and a variety of buns." - Kristie Hang

This place is packed on Sunday dinner. Also it's a place where a lot of families come to celebration bdays. We waited for 20mins for table for 3, and 10mins to order. The foods came out one dish at a time, with 10-15mins gap. We ordered 4 dishes and by the time we down with dish one, we have to wait 5mins for the next and so forth. They are popular with lobsters since 90% of tables have lobster (we didn't) and they came out fast....The foods are good, nice portion, and tasty. Service is great, friendly and helpful...wish the foods can come out faster. The place is a typical Chinese style, just more of modern side and clean and airy. Prices wise are not bad, very reasonable. Overall, beside slow turnaround, very good.

Google
the house of house special everything. we ordered house special lobster and added garlic noodles ($13 extra); fried fish; walnut shrimp; ong choi; french-style beef. the lobster was $29/lb and minimum is 3.5lbs per lobster. they explain this to you right away when you order the lobsterand they show you the selected live lobster first before cooking it. it is popularly paired with garlic noodles for an extra charge. the noodles were heavy on the pepper and the whole dish is on the spicy side. the lobster was hard to enjoy because some pieces are really stuck to the shell. it was good to try once but probably won't order it again. the french-style beef was very underwhelming - the cut of the beef was tough and dry. the star of the show for us was the honey walnut shrimp. the size of the shrimp was pretty good. the crispiness and flavor were spot-on and most especially, the amount of shrimp wasn't disguised by a mountain of broccoli like some establishments do. service was good. they explain anything that is not ordernary right away like they made sure to mention the price of lobster right away, that the noodles and white rice cost extra and when we tried to order the green beans, the mentioned right away that it has ground pork and cannot be omitted, which i appreciated knowing.

Google
We ordered Shrimp Walnut, Shrimp Fried Rice, Garlic Green Beans, Chow Mein, White Rice, and their famous Butter Garlic Lobster. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the flavors were fresh and well-balanced. To top it off, we also had Thai Iced Tea, which was refreshing and paired perfectly with the meal. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made the experience enjoyable. The restaurant itself was very clean, and parking was easy, which made visiting stress-free. The only downside was that the dining area had a noticeable bleach smell, which was a bit distracting while eating which gave me a headache. Aside from that, the environment felt comfortable, welcoming, and well-kept. Overall, Capital Seafood delivered a fantastic meal with excellent service, and I’d definitely recommend it for anyone craving flavorful seafood and Chinese dishes in Garden Grove.

Google
Great food and excellent service! Every dish we ordered was fresh and full of flavor. The staff checked on us often—unlike many places where you barely see them until it’s time for the check. Highly recommend this spot!

Google
This was our first visit. Waiting for a table took approximately 35 minutes, but we did arrive at peak time on Labor Day. The restaurant specializes in DELICIOUS seafood-focused Chinese entrees and Asian small plates. The location offers ample free parking, including designated disabled parking spaces near the entrance, making it convenient for those with disabled parking placard permits. The staff was busy, but our server attended to our needs promptly without delay or requiring us to ask for assistance. Ambiance was tranquil and enjoyable!

I really like how they remodeled this place over the years! The food is on point! We went here for dinner on Mother's Day. Food took slightly long to come out but it was still good! My favorite is the sweet and sour soup! We finished that so fast! Second favorite was the piping hot eggplant with garlic sauce. The cut it in the perfect shape so it was easy to grab and the inside of the eggplant didn't get mushed together. Third favorite was the house special fish fillet. It came out hot and crispy. The remaining dishes were also good.

We thoroughly enjoyed every dish we ordered during our first visit to this Chinese restaurant. The steamed jasmine rice was fragrant and perfectly cooked, setting the tone for a memorable meal. We sampled a variety of dishes, including crab meat with asparagus soup, clams in basil hot sauce, house special shrimp, house special hotpot, sautéed pea sprouts, and the standout house special crab. Each dish was seasoned to perfection and full of flavor, showcasing the kitchen’s skill and attention to detail. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with customers well beyond the typical lunch hour—clear evidence of its popularity. The line of patrons waiting to be seated spoke volumes about the consistent quality and reputation of the place. It was a truly satisfying dining experience, and I look forward to returning one day to enjoy it all over again.

Google
Stopped in based are several tik Tok recommendations. Fish restaurant is very welcoming the staff is very welcoming the atmosphere is very welcoming. The food is good it truly is traditional Chinese food everything is cooked well cooked to order everything came out fast and fresh. Play the garlic noodles with no meat, the broccoli and beef, shrimp fried rice and sweet and sour soup. They do provide you fresh tea as soon as you come in which I found very refreshing. Overall I did enjoy my time at this restaurant, it's really not my cup of tea, but it is good food. I do recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in OC. Service can be slow if you come during peak times, but the 'House Special' dishes here are winners. We ordered the squid, fish and string beans lunch specials -- 3 items for $40 including a bucket of rice and hot tea (but no soup). Their House Special Squid is better than most Italian restaurant fried calamari and most Chinese restaurant salt & pepper squid. *Note* This is not the same "Capital Seafood" in Irvine or Monterey Park -- different owners, different food, different ambience entirely. Also FYI- their lobster price is $29/lb

Yelp
Absolutely Terrible Service We have been wanting to try this spot FOREVER... we're regular Seafood Cove goers/ Peking Gourmet goers. Yet finally trying Capital Seafood was the biggest disappointment ever! Worst service I've ever had in my life. My son spilled a small glass of water, four staff walked by and did nothing ... no napkins... no refill... no help... yet they constantly checked on other tables. Restaurant wasn't busy, felt rather slow compared to their long lines they usually have to be seated. Yet we still waited forever for two items. You even have to pay for steamed rice per person. Seafood Cove would never.. Ordered House Special Lobster w/ Garlic Noodles, but it was overly peppery & lacked garlic & butter. Kids couldn't even eat them because it was too spicy/peppery. Sucha bummer if that's truly their house special because we love house special every where else & here wasn't even close to that buttery rich taste you usually get from house special items. Even their salt & pepper pork chop didn't hit the mark the way it does at some of our other go to spots. We had to flag someone down to ask for water, which mind you was half way through our meal before we even received any drinks.... when we finally got water, they brought only two glasses... but there was FOUR of us... so ridiculous. So we had to ask for two more. Between being ignored, getting food we didn't enjoy, and long waits, this was beyond disappointing.

Yelp
Hands down, this was the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life. I went to Capital Seafood and every single dish was unbelievably fresh and flavorful. The seafood was clearly high quality, cooked to perfection, and packed with taste. I genuinely don't think any meal after this will come close. If I had to choose a last meal, without a doubt, it would be from here. That's how good it was. From the first bite to the last, it was pure perfection. Highly, highly recommend!

Yelp
Great food and price lunch special menu! Lots of choices from the lunch menu. Big portions. Food arrives fresh and hot with plenty of rice. Tea served in a teapot filled regularly without having to ask. Friendly awesome service overall.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place and ended up for dinner for my birthday! Clean and friendly staff. Had the house special lobster with noodles, house special shrimp with noodles, French style beef, & combination fried rice! Everything came out hot and delicious! House special lobster with noddles was amazing! Great flavor, a little spice with sweet and savory! The house special shrimp wow!

Yelp
Went for my birthday this weekend. Outstanding! We ordered a 5.5 pd lobster over garlic noodles - delicious. French beef, koa pao chicken, walnut shrimp, green beans. Tea was also very good. Place was packed. I don't know how this place doesn't have higher reviews. We had a great time and plan to go back soon!

Yelp
I seen a lot of mixed reviews but have been wanting to give this place a try. I went in yesterday afternoon (Saturday) and it was pretty empty. I was expecting a full house. There were only 2 other tables dining in. Throughout our meal there were people trickling in and out for takeout and a few more parties came. It's a Chinese higher end restaurant that's on the pricier side that has a huge selection of items, but I think I hear the waiters speak what sounded like Khmer. Probably Cambodian-Chinese family owned. The older sweet lady taking our order and helping us the entire time was wonderful! There was a big language barrier but bless her heart we were all trying to understand each other. Other than that she was really attentive and like a caring grandmother who takes care of you. We ordered the live house special lobster with noodles, the fried intestines, salt and pepper chicken wings, and the house special calamari. Everything was amazing I'm not sure why so many unfavorable reviews. The house special sauce complimented the lobster really good I enjoyed the flavors! The noodles were cooked perfectly and thick and bouncy how I like them. You must also get the house special calamari! I read good reviews on it and it lives up to its hype! It was deep fried but covered in the house special sauce which might be the same as the lobster sauce. They were big rings and piping hot. The salt and pepper wings were cool but nothing too crazy. They were kind of pink still inside but I'm sure they were fully cooked. I love the toppings it came with; big chunks of green onions, white onions, and Serrano peppers. The fried intestines were good but average. They were paired with pickled veggies and sweet and sour sauce. All foods were delicious we really enjoyed it! They were all perfectly cooked and the flavors all went together so well! A lot of reviews here complaining of the price but again this restaurant is more on the pricier side of a Chinese restaurant with most entrees costing about ~$22. Their portions are generous though and the quality speaks for itself.

Yelp
I love coming here for my Vietnamese / Chinese fix. All the dishes are comforting and anything house special is delicious. My go to orders are the Kung pao chicken, house special shrimp or calamari, whole fried fish and canh chua. Sautéed pea sprouts are good too I just don't think the price is that worth it. If you pay cash, it's a few dollars cheaper. I never had to wait for dinner before.
google avatar

Nikki B.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Try the house special shrimp! French beef and the salt pepper pork chops were fire too
google avatar

Amy E.

Yelp
Good quality food here and very reminiscent of my childhood. Quantity is a little smaller than other seafood restaurants imo so items like the clams were not worth as I felt we only got so many and the flavor was really bland. Pea sprouts were my favorite veggie and I liked the fried intestines. Everything else was good too.
google avatar

Le G.

Yelp
Food is extremely fresh service is top tier and food needs no additional seasoning I can't stress this enough you need to try this for yourself.
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
Food is phenomenal, has been since I've been coming for almost 30 years. The spicy basil clams are a must. But I only give it 4 stars because service could be better
google avatar

Kartrinna H.

Yelp
I came here Father's Day afternoon and had taken about an hour to be seated. The portions were more than enough, the food was flavorful not overcooked. The service overall was lower than average, we would request more water or pepper it would take us multiple times asking in order for it to be done which took away from our eating experience there. The place was very busy with multiple crowds waiting to be seated outside. We were seated tucked away in the back table right outside the restrooms, there was only 5 of us so we were able to sit on the side away from the walk way but I imagine the seating is this way to maximize how many tables they're able to fit.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never dined here before and finally made it out to this restaurant. Where have I possibly been?! This restaurant serves authentic Chinese food, similar to that of Royal Capital (which is now closed). Flavors are spot on, and delicious. We asked for 4 lb of lobster (house special), and made sure it was female lobster for the roe. Tasty! Also ordered fried tofu, french beef, sauteed pea sprouts, seafood soup, and basil clam. Every dish was great, so now we have another go-to Chinese restaurant in the area!
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
Solid Chinese food spot! We ordered the Mongolian beef, honey walnut shrimp, salt and pepper pork ribs and the seafood hot pot (Canh). All dishes were delish! Loved how the hot pot soup was flavored - both sour and umami notes. I also loved the sauce the salt and pepper pork ribs came with- had garlic and jalapeños! Honey walnut shrimp was ok, had too much batter. And lastly Mongolian beef has a sweet satay type of sauce but overall pretty good! I would go here again.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here to celebrate Chinese New Year and enjoyed a delicious feast, but unfortunately, the service didn't quite match up. The restaurant was packed with large groups, and it was clear they were understaffed--servers were rushing around, and getting assistance took quite a while. That said, the food was great, and we could tell they were doing their best given how busy it was. We might give this place another try after the CNY rush to see if the experience is better when things aren't so hectic. Would recommend coming during a less busy time if you want a more relaxed dining experience!

Yelp
We came for a Lunar New Year dinner and it was a good experience. We had a reservation, so that helps bypass the wait. The ambiance is clean and typical. The service was friendly and a little slower than usual, but they gave us a heads up it would be a little slower since it was busy. The food was just okay. The portions seemed smaller than other restaurants. The clams hardly had any clams, the soup was noticeably smaller. There were four of us and all the dishes were almost empty with each of us just having one normal sized serving. The taste of the food was good, yet nothing special. The most flavorful was the E-mein and House special fish filet.
google avatar

Yelp
We love the House Special Fish Filet, always our favorite. The staff is always nice. The food is so fresh.

Yelp
The best shrimp dish ever. Literally the best EVER! After ordering lobster, beef, chicken and noodles my brother asked what's good and the server recommended the fried shrimp and when my brother responded saying eh na the waiter said if u don't like it I'll take care of it. Seriously it was delicious. The restaurant is great I believe it's been open for around 30 years it is in Garden Grove in or next to little Saigon the staff were all very friendly and the food was delicious. Gotta say the orange chicken was not so good but the French beef, lobster with garlic noodles and the darn fried shrimp were so delicious I will definitely go back.
google avatar

Luttie R.

Yelp
Service was great but the food was another level of Chinese food the best , just make sure to go in a group because the portions are full and not individually
google avatar

Yelp
One of the worse experience ever, dining in a supposedly authentic Chinese food restaurant. I would never understand why people rate this place so high, the lines were out the door, and people are waiting 45 plus minutes for a mediocre Chinese food. Was unfortunate that they seat our party in the back of the restaurant, I was sitting facing the men's bathroom. The door was wide open and saw a dude just hacking a loogie in the sink, GROSS! They could have closed the door, but no, they propped it open and put a door stopper in the bathroom, why though? It's insane that I have to see people coming in and out the bathroom and wiping their noses right 10 feet away from you. The food: let's just say it is not worth the $75.00 I paid for. We ordered the deep fried squid, it was bland with no taste. On top of that they put raw sliced red onions, why would you do this? The house style hotpot is another disappointment, no taste, just a goop of mixed stuff with cilantro on top. They used lean pork in it! Who does that? The beauty of hot pot Chinese style is that you put a fatty pork slices, not tough lean meats! The worse of all is the deep fried chicken wings, at $12.00 for 5 pieces, they come just as we were finished with our main dish (and you call this appetizer). You could have called this backetizzer instead; the audacity to bring appetizer at the end of your guest's meal is just next level! Instead of savory taste, there is a sweet taste to it once you bite on it. 10/10 would never come back to this place.
google avatar

Tunisia D.

Yelp
The food came quickly and it was amazing! The waitresses were awesome as well. It's a nice restaurant and a big parking lot. Great for parties and everything.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
This has been the best new place I've visited all year--truly a 10/10 experience. After reading some of the other reviews, I was surprised because my experience was completely different. While I understand that not every visit goes perfectly, I personally received excellent service and couldn't be happier. I highly recommend giving this place a try!"
google avatar

ThomaS T.

Yelp
I came for the lunch special and from a recommendation from a close friend/family. They have an Instagram with influencers saying they have revamped and remodeled. I'm baffled at the size of the lunch specials, they were so so so so small. It was so sad. I had 9 total small clams on my mint basal clam plate , it was so scarce . This is an embarrassment amount for a lunch special. The food was okay . Service was okay too. You guys gota think about it that it's a family style restaurant and for the 3 of us, I felt bad that I took my mother in law here, there was hardly any food for the total cost of $80 . I prefer the restaurant one down the street.
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
Wow! I came here with my sister but I should have brought the whole family because these portions are huge. If you like juicy flavorful food then you need to try this Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant for dinner one day. The lobster garlic noodles and beef were my favorite. It's very clean, service is fast, food is delicious. I totally recommend it if you're in the area. I think it's worth the drive!
google avatar

Ben G.

Yelp
When the other spots are super busy, this one comes in clutch. They have remodel the inside to keep it more modern while keeping the original style. They've gotten a whole new staff while keeping those who still wants to hustle and bustle. Certain days it hits good and certain days is fair. There social media advertisment doesn't equal to it in real person as far as the experience if this is what you grew up on.
google avatar

Mai N.

Yelp
Our go to for Chinese food!! Everything is soo damn good and their service is amazing as well. Very clean and not your typical Chinese restaurant. I recommend house special everryyythang! The house special scallops are my new favorite. Kelvin the owner is especially nice and so accommodating! Love this place!
google avatar

Yelp Is Bullshit B.

Yelp
I took the kids here for lunch specials today. It was our first time at this particular location. My kids have never been fond of Chinese food. I figured that I wanted to give this place a try. First of all, the elderly waitress was very difficult to understand. Her spoke with words all glued together or something, I couldn't even figure out she said, despite my decades of years of experience conversing with non-native speakers and being one myself. This was quite frustrating as I was only ordering items. Secondly, I decided to order lobster along with several lunch special items. All the lunch special items were mediocre. The house special lobster was decent. However, I couldn't find pieces of the lobster tail. I was going to biiitch about it, but decided not to, because I figured I didn't need to make a scene since I will never go back anyway. Also, they charged higher prices for non-cash payments. So there you have it, I do not recommend this place and will never go back, first time and the last.
google avatar

Daniel J.

Yelp
I've been a customer here for a while. The food is always amazing but today was the service from the lady with the mask and glasses was terrible. She slammed our drinks and plate on the table especially in right in front of us. I don't know but they should hire nice people.
google avatar

Lucero G.

Yelp
Arrived as soon as they opened and was served right away. They have lunch specials, but the french cube beef is always worth getting.
google avatar

My-Linh N.

Yelp
Great service. Food was really good too. A great variety of Chinese-Vietnamese dishes. Favorite was the house special shrimp
google avatar

Yelp
I will def not run to a restaurant that a influencer posts on instagram ever again without checking reviews on yelp here or google She must eat for free for posting these bogus reels Her name on instagram is Lilly - beware of her reviews on video reels Crab with noodles Hardly any and all shreds not pieces of crab Food is bland Underwhelming With all the competition in chinese food in this area ... this would be on bottom of my list .
google avatar

Arlene L.

Yelp
Excellent service and lunch special is awesome, good value and delicious! The dishes that are really good here are the House Special Fresh Squid and Shrimp with Garlic sauce. The Squid rings are big, thick and have a crunchy flavorful batter that's delicious. The shrimps are big and juicy, but only 6 for this lunch special. Other dishes that we had were sautéed green beans and kung pao chicken. The beans were a stringy, maybe old. And the king pao chicken was average. In general, this is a great place for lunch. We recommend getting anything "House Special" as that sauce is unique and so delicious!
google avatar

Tm G.

Yelp
Went to this place based off an IG post from OCFEED. She made it seem way better than it was. Very very mediocre! Only giving a 3 based of lunch specials prices. If I paid full price would have been a 1 or 2 star. When I originally looked up the reviews here, I questioned its lower rating but want to try. So went to try it out around 11 on a Sunday. Was packed with a line, but assuming it was cause they offered lunch specials and just opened. We tried the crispy tofu, broccoli, a crab noodle dish, and shrimp dish. We told waiter we don't eat meat but then he brought up broccoli with pork. He said it's not listed on menu but I told him no meat. I asked if shrimp was heavily friend, he said no then came put super deep fried and drenched in sauce. Crab noodles dish barely had any crab, was more like shredded strings. Won't be back or take recommendations from OCFEED again

Yelp
After the remodel, Capital Seafood is looking so much better! Thankfully, the food has tasted the same throughout the years. It's always good, always consistent. Love me some Capital Seafood, especially for family meals. My favorites are definitely the walnut shrimp, pea sprouts, fried fish, fried tofu, bo luc lac - but I really don't think you could go wrong here!

Yelp
Love love love this place!! My husband and I drive from Ventura county to this specific location for the service, the experience and the Food. From the very first time we came here, we were treated like family. Kelvin the owner and Susan are truly the best. Every single item on the menu is delicious. The lobster of course is amazing but my favorite is the shrimp with noodles and fried squid. The French beef is like butter , the fried rice is next level, veggies are a must, just everything around is really really good. We will continue to drive almost 2 hrs for the food but mostly for the experience!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We were there on Easter Sunday afternoon around 2 pm. The food was great! The place seems to be clean except for women's washroom. As it was in between lunch and dinner, the place was much slower than when we got seated. The service was horrible. After they took the order and the food got delivered, no one ever checked on us for any reason. We wanted to order more house lobsters and we had to walk to the front to get help. We would like more tea and water and there was no one to be found except for the guy at the front door. As I said it was in between lunch and dinner so the place was empty. Was disappointed with the level of service! When we ordered the second lobster dish, the person bringing the food didn't know we ordered and gave it to another table who ordered the same dish but after us.

Yelp
Food was good but very bad service ambience suck too maybe because we are Mexican and the plates were coming one every 10 minutes and restroom are very dirty

Yelp
Simply wonderful! This restaurant is perfect for date night, family dinners or special occasions. I came here for lunch with a group of co-workers and we tried a variety of items. From the walnut shrimp and the house special pork, to the sautéed string beans and the crispy fried tofu. Every item was fresh, hot and delicious. The food is served family style and the service is amazing. I must say, this is now one of my favorite restaurants and I will be back again and again.

Yelp
I use to come to capital seafood a lot back in the day, it was our family go to spot for Chinese food, but after awhile, we had a lot of bad experiences, the service was bad, the food wasn't good anymore, skimpy on the portions, so we stop coming for at least 9 years. I recently tried Capital seafood again and wow its amazing again. I have eaten here twice so far again after a long hiatus. I highly recommend getting anything house special, but especially the House special squid, it was absolutely amazing and one of the best food I have ever eaten. Trust me and order the House special squid. The dinner portions is huge, and they don't skimp on the squids for dinner portions. They also have lunch special from 11-3pm, The price is reasonable for lunch $12.50, good amount for lunch and it comes with rice.
google avatar

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
Very solid Chinese restaurant that serves family style Chinese/Vietnamese dishes. We ordered the house special lobster noodles, stir fried Ong choi, salt and pepper squid, fried tofu, and walnut shrimp. Everything was very good and the best walnut shrimp I ever had. Service was pretty slow for a Friday night as it appeared they were understaffed.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here for some take out lobster noodles for our July 4th party. It was okay. The flavor was definitely there and the lobster was cooked to perfection but I was taken aback by how spicy it was. The dish did have a kick! My sister was a fan and the verdict is still out for me! Our go to lobster noodles take out spot just up and closed so this may have to be our new spot! We shall see!

Yelp
Our first time at Capital Seafood and we are so impressed with the quality and taste of all the items we ordered. Kelvin provided excellent service and made wonderful menu recommendations. Speaking of the menu selections, Capital Seafood has a huge selection with a variety of items to choose from. We started with the garlic green beans with shrimp. The green beans were crispy and the garlic sauce was flavorful. Next the house shrimp with garlic noodles arrived. The shrimp were plump, tender and meaty. The noodles were perfectly cooked and wonderfully seasoned. Finally the house garlic lobster arrived. What a masterpiece! The presentation made our mouth water even more. lol lol The garlic sauce was superb! I highly recommend Capital Seafood for the delicious food and excellent service. Can't wait to come back with a big party to try more dishes.

Yelp
Should you ever be in this part of Southern California. You gotta try this place! They've been serving Great food for over 30 years. The Seafood is fresh, the portions are large, the prices are reasonable and not too much MSG. Give it a try and let me know you agree.

Yelp
We hadn't been to Capital in years, but we went on Mother's Day and it absolutely did not disappoint! Sure, the food took a little longer than usual, but with a packed house, that was expected. The vibe and energy were on point--lively and fun. The staff was moving quickly, making sure we had everything we needed. The walnut shrimp was a definite hit, the canh chua was incredible, and the ong choy was just as good as we remembered. The kung pao chicken was surprisingly light--not greasy like other places we've tried. And the eggplant? Zeelicious! We'll definitely be back!
