How the Espresso Martini Became Melbourne’s Essential Cocktail | Eater

"An Italian-focused bar in Carlton known for creative, regionally inspired drinks—most notably a tiramisu cocktail that uses clarified coffee-milk punch and muscat to recreate the dessert's flavors; the team deliberately uses a lighter filter coffee for its floral, vegetal notes and stronger acid structure to balance the drink’s rich, sweet elements." - Fred Siggins

Walked in last minute and we got a table. Didn’t plan for a pizza tonight but glad we did. It was tasty, crispy crust with great flavour and enough bite, and the pepperoni toppings were great. The crumbled mozzarella was a great plate too with the spicy tomato sugo and the focaccia was a great side to scoop up the sauce. Overall a great feed!

What can I say about this place. There are very few occasions in life when you feel really happy and complete after eating a food, dining at capitano was one of those occassions for me. Really loved their authentic Italian food, and authenticity is hard to find these days. Every item in the menu tasted like it was cooked with love and care. I ate too much that day but still wanted to keep going. Highly recommended. There isn't anything that I can say negative about this place, chef, staff. Good job

Interesting twist on the pizza. The rectangular pizzas were the highlight, with a crispy crust and a bouncy foccacia body. Pasta was also excellent.

Walked in and immediately liked the cool vibe of the place. We had booked in advance, and menus were only available via QR code no physical menus. We tried the Sicilian square pizza ($30) and it was fantastic no faults, just really well done. We also had the Lumache pasta (GF) ($33), which had great flavours all around. The staff were friendly. Highly recommend the pizzas.

Yellowfin tuna was the perfect refreshing & light starter for a big pizza/pasta meal. Loved the square 'roni pizza, with the crispy cheesy edges. But the star of the show is the vodka sauce pasta! Don't leave without trying the sauce. Great little corner spot in Carlton, not too loud. Service was prompt and friendly. Can't wait to come back to Melbourne and try the rest of the menu.

Capitano has been on my must-try list for so long, so finally dining there was such a treat! First things first, I have to talk about the interior design. Designed by Chris James Studio, the space feels like a reimagined modern pub—moody, refined, and effortlessly stylish. The dark tones, ambient lighting, and thoughtful layout create an atmosphere that feels classy yet unpretentious. Despite the openness of the space, it still manages to feel intimate, making it perfect for small groups or date nights. I was immediately struck by how comfortable and welcoming the space was. Now onto the food! Dining as a trio, we decided to share three dishes. The Norma square pizza caught our attention immediately, and it did not disappoint. Imagine a perfectly fluffy focaccia layered with pizza toppings—it was rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. It’s super filling, so sharing was definitely the right move (trust me, you wouldn’t want to tackle this one solo!). We also tried two pasta dishes: the Casarecce with prawns and the Cavatelli with pistachio pesto. Both were delicious, but in my opinion, Capitano truly shines as a pizza-first kind of spot. The service was impeccable—the staff were so attentive, and the food came out ridiculously fast (which was ideal since I was starving!). Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I’d definitely come back. Capitano, you’re worth the hype!

We've been here a few times now and it always impresses. Definitely one of the very best choices for rustic Italian food with a contemporary edge. The perfectly balanced and creative flavours make every dish so delicious. The table service is friendly and the restaurant has a nice relaxed atmosphere. Make sure you try their Tiramisu, it is amazing. This place is a must go.

The pizza here is wonderful. Our favorite was the round broccoli pie which featured sprouting broccoli and nettle pesto, with smoked cheese and pine nuts. Great texture and taste. We also ordered the grandma square, which was simple and delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Yelp
This is another one of those pubs that I have visited a couple of times, and I have to admit that it is pretty cool. Actually, it seems to have undergone further renovations since I was last here, so I probably can't comment too much on what it is like now (it takes me a while to get around to writing reviews on some places). However, hopefully little has changed, and the atmosphere is just as good as what it used to be.

Yelp
We stumbled across this good looking pizza place when walking past. Delicious pizzas with a twist. The tiramisu is the best I've tasted outside of Italy. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to another visit next time I'm in Melbourne
