I had the best time at Capitol Bar tonight! It's not just a karaoke bar; it's a fantastic black-owned and woman-owned place full of positive energy. The atmosphere was so lively, and I loved that there was no drama. Singing karaoke in the heart of Portland will be an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend checking out this gem! Families can come for brunch, and kids are welcome until 8 PM all days. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner: Educated, Confident and genuinely a very, very sweet soul😉

Capital Bar & Grill was the perfect choice for our baby shower. They provided a taco bar and full access to the bottom floor for three hours at a reasonable rate. The staff was incredibly accommodating and supportive throughout the event. Highly recommend for any celebration!

Google
I love this place. Black Owned and always inclusive and welcoming. I say it my neighborhood bar but I literally drive 20 minutes just to spend time here. The staff is wonderful, the drinks are always great and the owners are warm and friendly. The karaoke rooms are well appointed and the Trap Bingo never disappoints. If you want a fun place with a casual atmosphere where you can sing, laugh and enjoy a basketball game this is the spot.

Google
Great find in NE! Very spacious bar, with an upstairs section and a patio. They have a huge selection of cocktails, and 8 or so beers on tap. The menu is all vegan (I’m not a vegan and did not eat there), but their offerings sounded good and there are things I will try when I go back. Super friendly service, which is kind of a rare find in bars these days.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza by the Moda Center for a concert. We did a bar crawl on NE Broadway and Capitol was our first stop. This place is definitely very cute and the set up is very nice. They have karaoke but not on the day that we were there. The cocktails were amazing and the Jamaican Jerk Wings were really tasty. The bar staff were really friendly and fast too. They had a new system where you can scan a QR code to order food and pay but it was not working properly and you couldn’t order drinks from it, just your food. I’m sure by note it is fixed though. All in all it was a really cool start to our crawl. Thanks guys!

We didn't try the food, but we were excited to visit because there was a dj and the music was good. We liked our drinks and caught some sun sitting outside on the patio. The security guards and bartender were helpful. It was a diverse crowd, which I like, especially in Portland.

Google
Awesome spot!! Had been wanting to check this out for a while. So glad we did. Was surprised that more people weren't here on a Friday night. Definitely has an exciting vibe to it. Very tasty drinks with plenty to choose from. Not only do they have the main floor, but, they also have upstairs dedicated to karaoke. One big group setting along with special reserved rooms for karaoke parties with friends. Such a great idea!! They also have a nice patio/outdoor seating area. Will definitely be coming back to try out the food.

Really flavorful and heathy options. Loved the waffled hasbrowns and Turkey and greens omelette. Peach pancakes had great flavor.

Yelp
First- we had a hamburger, duck tacos and a Caesar salad all really good. The bar produced a excellent Manhattan and a nice dry cider. Service was good, room is pleasant. We will certainly be back. Why only four stars for excellent food and service- QR code overload. Walk in, posted code and menu, apparently you can order in-house using code or not- not clear. You can get table service but you need to ask or order at the bar. This place is not getting as much traffic as it should for a couple of reasons- closed for a long time- the last owners opened, then a car seriously damaged the front, Covid and supply chain problems didn't help, them, just as they were getting ready to reopen the owner drowned rescuing a swimmer. So, then closed again. But finally opened - new crew, new menu and there is a whole lot to like. Menu is not large but excellent choices. Full bar with good bar folks. Another problem is trying to find them on things like google which pulls up all the old restaurant stuff- I went in hungry for a rib basket- ooops old place. Very happy with what I got but not sure that your average rib person will necessarily be delighted with duck tacos. And ditch covering the windows with what looks like painters plastic during hours closed. We thought that they were still closed. They are open and serving, give them a try.

Yelp
I love the new vibe! The mixture of GROWN SEXY AND MATURE only. The crowd here takes care of eachother. Feels like a FAMILY Atmosphere. All ages here are respectful and classy! I Love Capital. On a different note pleaae hold up high all the innocent people around the world dying in the world war. ‍‍‍ Our Creator Please Hold us.

Yelp
This place has a refreshing ambiance. You order at the bar and it's first come first serve seating.

Yelp
Warning! Do not book a private room for Karaoke! I booked their "deluxe" karaoke room for a birthday party. This room is advertised as a premium karaoke experience that can accommodate up to 30 people. Our group was only 12 people and I booked it weeks in advance and prepaid $150. When we arrived the room was being used a storage closet... completely filled with flipped over tables and chairs. Eventually they got just enough folding chairs and cleared a small amount of space we could get our group in. Once we were able to start both microphones died within 15 minutes, and they don't have actual karaoke software just told us to search youtube. Afterwards I wrote 3+ emails to them asking if it was possible to get a partial refund, and no one ever even responded. Please do not count on them for your karaoke event or party.

Yelp
Just had their brunch today and it was delicious! The service was fantastic, and even got a complimentary side of fruit. The smokey avocado toast was surprisingly good and quite filling! They did not skimp on the avocado! Woohoo! My daughter and I played one of the many games they had on site, but were quickly interrupted as the food came out quickly. I can't wait to come back here to enjoy the beautiful ambiance and for cocktails!

Boo C.

Yelp
Came to eat brunch with my friend and the place was pretty slow and it took about 1 hr to get our meal . The food was cold and they tried to comp us with shots of alcohol we didn't come to drink we came for food . I honestly would not recommend eating here. The staff does not know how to make it right after getting cold food and waiting a little over an hour ! And my eggs were burnt I asked for over easy !

Yelp
I peaked through Capitol's windows while driving down Broadway St and was excited visit. The space is great and the bar looks fantastic. I was disappointed when I arrived and despite no bar lines, neither bartender acknowledged me standing there for roughly ten minutes. Each were bantering with the customer they were currently helping as they made their drinks so I didn't expect much. A hello would be nice. A "be with you soon" would have been better. I had a friend arrive who experienced the same long wait and poor service at the bar. I ordered one house cocktail which was great. Normally, I would have stayed and ordered more but left early due to the service. However, I will visit again--hopefully it was just an off night.

Yelp
You can see my raving review from before, I told everyone I knew about this place and I was so happy to introduce people to my favorite spot that I knew everyone would love/be able to enjoy. But as I'm sure some of you have seen, and some may not care too much about, but Capitol is no longer vegan. Not even close. Apparently the chef is new and it sounds like they took over the restaurant their own way, and decided they didn't want to adapt/learn the menu everyone loved, or put their own Cajun pizazz on some new items, and instead they dumped the menu and came up with a less than pleasing menu filled with animal products. In my opinion, thats the easy way of doing things. There are a million restaurants out there serving mediocre animal products, so the ones that even try to get creative with plants, is usually praised and supported by customers because vegan. chefs. try. harder. It's not easy, but there are a million places doing "easy", so open a new restaurant if you wanted to do your own thing. My friends that used to come to town from all over would be so excited to have our nights out at Capital, but even they, without ordering food to notice this huge change, said it's not the same place it used to be.

Meagan N.

Yelp
Stopped by for a little Sunday afternoon karaoke! The drinks were delicious and pretty expensive. I tried some of the food. It was pretty average. I love the ambiance here though! The decor is very well thought out. The back patio was cute as well, a bit on the warm side. Had a blast at karaoke!

Jack S.

Yelp
booked a karaoke room here and they were 30 min late getting it ready. the system and microphones weren't working and we had to troubleshoot it ourselves because there were 3 people working. no service to the rooms, all but one bathroom was out of order, $8 shots, 50/50 chance the karaoke system would have your song on it. the room was cheaply built with zero soundproofing so you can hear the rooms next to you. layout made it so you have to walk through other people's private rooms to get to yours.

Kevin L.

Yelp
Awesome until 2am on a Monday. Clean and fun individual karaoke rooms with cordless mics and music selection controlled by browser on your phone. Elegant and shiny tall bar. Friendly cool bartenders. Good prices on drinks and karaoke. Will definitely be back!

Neva B.

Yelp
I'm on the search for the best brunch in Portland.... Capitol is definitely at the top of my list!!! There's no brunch on Saturdays, just Sunday, which kind of stinks, but makes Sunday Funday that much more great! My fave items are the breakfast salad, lemon blueberry marscapone pancakes and the chicken and waffle benedict! Man, I wish I had all of this right now!!! I usually go early, between 11-12, to beat the crowd. It starts to pick up and gets a tad busy around 1 or 1:30.

Terrance S.

Yelp
Great location, great community vibes, and the food from Kitchen Killa comes in in the clutch. Make sure you stop by for good drinks and music. The vip rooms, patio, and bar environment are great for hanging out. Location is perfect and you won't be mad.

Christine D.

Yelp
We have stopped in here a couple of times and I really like the atmosphere. We normally go early--around 5 PM so it's not normally crowded. They have a fun drinks and a vegan/vegetarian menu. They had some tasty bites. I had the burger--I'm not sure what the patty was made of but it reminded me of the old school McDonald's burgers. I don't think they have a fryer so all sandwiches come with kettle type chips. This is not a problem for me as I tend to overdo it with fries so this is a great compromise. The drinks are tasty and in the $10 range. They have went to the no straw or for soft drinks paper straw situation in case you are keeping score. I had a vodka drink that was name something like pretty in pink (it has pink grapefruit juice in it)--it was pretty tasty. The bouncer and the music show up around 8 or 9 PM so it definitely gets more crowded and I guess they have Karaoke upstairs. I haven't ventured up there yet. It's not likely to happen. All in all a good place to get a drink and a snack.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Ambiance is great and the staff is excellent. Keep up the great work. Food selection is also good with some vegan options.

Adrienne O.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite places, but went there tonight and found it changed management and it sucks now. The menu is much smaller and no longer has many vegan options. We just had a beer and ended up leaving without getting any food because the menu was so lackluster. A piece of advice to the new management: if you're going to have veg options please include some form of protein (tofu, tempeh, beyond/impossible burger, something). Paying these prices for what basically amounts to a bowl of corn is highway robbery. We won't be going back

Christina C.

Yelp
Really boring bar.. went there w friends and my husband and we couldn't even get the fries... they don't exist there or they are not approved by vegetarians in Capitol. Cocktails are really average. Really poor menu with bar bites nothing is good to share. I had experience in vegetarian bars but this was most boring. Btw ambience and service are only 3/5. Horrible chairs in the bar I couldn't seat there more that 5 minutes so we got table which didn't had light at all so my pictures came really bad.

Kristina M.

Yelp
What a beautiful bar with plenty of table and bar seating. I can't vouch for the food but great options on the menu for those wanting vegan food. The "whiskey in the jar" cocktail was perfect. They also had pickle backs as well. The drinks were a strong pour and helped summon up some liquid courage for the karaoke room upstairs, which was amazingly fun. Fill out a slip of paper with your name and requested song for the karaoke dj. There is a mini plateau for your center stage and multiple tv screens to jog your memory for songs you half-remember. It all makes for a wonderful night filled with libations, laughs, and drunkenly while also beautifully performed songs.

Martina C.

Yelp
Not my favorite Lightning Bar, by far, but good. The menu selection is decent and they offer the Impossible Burger. I do wish they'd give options other than kettle chips for a side - like tots, fries, hummus and veggies...something because I really don't like kettle chips. Our food is good whenever we come and the service is always good. It's never been outstanding, it's always been a solid 4 star experience. The drinks are awesome though. As a gin drinker, I like to try new things and it's always fun to see what they've got or what their bar tender offers. Definitely a cool spot!

Lisa E.

Yelp
This review is not for the food, but the cocktails! My bartender was fabulous and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately I do not know his name! All my drinks tasted great and looked ravishing. I could be wearing a paper bag and drink one of these martinis and look like a sophisticated broad. Drink prices were also reasonable given the effort put into these liquid creations; I tipped liberally! If Karaoke is your thing, it is offered up stairs. I prefer the pretty bar downstairs. Also for vegan people, I overheard their vegan food is outstanding...On that note, I just ordered another cocktail :)

Pooja S.

Yelp
Out bartender Mitt was great! We were visiting Portland for the weekend.. He gave us great recommendations for the rest of our trip!!

Virlie B.

Yelp
Got a raspberry lime alcoholic frozen drink in here for $10.00. It was okay at best. Definitely underwhelming. It's worth noting that one block down is Goodwill, and almost across that is the Lloyds Shopping Center. What I'm trying to get at is, for the location, this is super overpriced. Yes, the place is nice, and yes the bar looks cool with Eames-inspired chairs everywhere and plenty of seating, but really that's it. You're paying for their decor, and not for the quality of their drinks. The price of the drink doesn't match the taste of it. Again, it's okay, but it's definitely not worth the $10.00.

Jeannie D.

Yelp
Delicious food, gluten/vegan friendly. Great atmosphere, spacious & clean. Service was okay, no complaints. The slushee drinks at 15$ for a pint size is a bit much, seriously. Not impressive. I'd never order those again.

Leah H.

Yelp
This place was so wonderful previous to the pandemic! It was fully vegan and such a chic place, but to see it go from fully vegan to absolutely not is really upsetting.

Cassidy H.

Yelp
WOW, this place is fun. Tried vegan Mac&Cheese for the first time and it was damn good. My husband got a vegan burger and really enjoyed it as well. Drinks were amazing too! Go sing some karaoke! You won't regret it. Cute place, great vibes.

Naomi G.

Yelp
This place is pretty cool! Went here on a Friday with some friends to get a drink. One of my friends has pretty bad food allergies, and is all about the new vegan/vegetarian options places. The vibe is neat, because the ceilings are high, and the windows are huge and it has a very modern yet portland feel (if you know what I'm talking about!) We ordered ale Mac and cheese, and beans and chips (both were sooooooo good!) the Mac n cheese was my friends favorite thing ever haha I think she went back the next week just for the Mac n cheese alone!! (You guys are doing something right with your Mac n cheese!!) I love the location of this place. It's on the corner, but it's so cool looking. It has so much natural light (even though I went at night) I can imagine having it be so pretty and nice to hang out in during the day as well. Maybe I'll have to come back soon and get some Mac n cheese with my friend and enjoy the location more! When we went, it was SUPER busy. I believe it was a Friday night (which is a given for being busy), but the bartenders did a pretty good job handling the amount of people that were around without allowing people to feel ignored (me and my friends) I am always so observant at places I go to the first time for customer service. I've worked in customer service for a long time, and I understand things get busy and it's a tough job. So it's impressive when people can handle mass amounts of people ordering random things and still allow others to feel important. Anyways, I recommend this place for an evening drink! And some Mac n cheese (:

Br A.

Yelp
This bar makes me happy, vibrant and vibes two of my favorite elements. Drinking a new cocktail called the "Kobe at Capitol sparked so much joy! I can't wait to try out the new menu! ...

Liz R.

Yelp
Went here on a Saturday night and I would say it's a very chill bar. Nothing too fancy, setting is very nice, and had a decent selection of drinks. I had the Purple Rain and it's one of the best drinks I had in a while. This drink is definitely for those who prefer a sweet, but not overly sweet, alcoholic drink. They also have a Karaoke but I didn't have an opportunity to try it out. I do plan to visit again and try their other cocktails. Worth a visit

Faye M.

Yelp
Great BBQ and all the sides were awesome as well. Hadn't been there since before Covid and very pleasantly surprised with new owners and menu. Will be back for sure!

Charlie T.

Yelp
Pretty cool spot to have a cocktail or two. Similar style to Victoria Bar in the liquor presentation style and that you order at the bar. What sets this place apart from others is that they have like a karaoke room in the back with a karaoke dj.

Noel P.

Yelp
Favorite neighborhood bar. Excellent cocktails, nice bartenders and servers, and vegan! If you like karaoke theres that too, but downstairs is more my vibe. Also, the scene is a little freaky in a good way. It's got that old Portland feel

Courtney B.

Yelp
A friend and I went here as it is a new bar near her house in NE Portland. The bartender was very friendly and nice when I ordered my drink from him, which I appreciated. However, this place is so incredibly loud! Considering the atmosphere appears to be more of a casual sit down bar, it had the loudness of a club, which was a little off putting. We ended up leaving after one drink because we were looking more for a casual drink and the loudness was just too much. It was also hard to get a feel for the crowd that frequents this bar. I am in my mid-twenties and I felt out of place here, like I looked too young or something? I ordered the True Blue cocktail based on the color. However, the taste was a little funky. It wasn't bad just...different I guess? It was tequila mixed with blue curaçao and some sort of coconut? Definitely not a bad experience but not necessarily a good one here.

Spencer M.

Yelp
If you love bars with symmetry and bourbon options, come here. Despite one of the bartenders saying Four Roses is better than Bulleit, the service and class is there. The mac and cheese is reason enough to come here, especially with the bread crumbs in it, but if you need more convincing, come to see Josh, the bar manager. He's friendly, knowledgable, and can draw up a stellar cocktail menu that will have you winning your Pictionary games before you know it.

Rebecca N.

Yelp
I was off work the other day and wondered into this bar while waiting for the traffic to simmer down on the 205. A friend suggested this bar a couple of years ago but due to life and not living in Portland I simply forgot. Well, on this day I found myself during happy hour. What really caught my eye was the delicious cider on tap and vegan appetizers on the happy hour menu. I also ordered the vegan jalapeño burger and I think that it was one of the best prepared plant based grilled burgers I have ever tasted. The staff was so friendly and courteous not to mention attentive. If you ever find yourself vegan, thirsty and hungry, this is a must go to establishment. Oh ya, next time I'm going to rent out one of the karaoke rooms because it an option.

Steffanie W.

Yelp
Overall, I enjoy coming here every once in a while. There is no table service so you have to order at the bar, and if you are sitting at the bar sometimes people are a little pushy. The menu for food is all vegan! Which is a nice surprise! I love the cheese bread! Great after a few of "Purple Rain's" The cocktails are very creative. They also offer some pretty rad shots. First time here I got lost on my way to the bathroom and found the Karaoke section. Looks pretty fun! The prices for that seemed a little much. Usually a pretty calm bar, sometimes they have a DJ mixing up some jams. Wish they had more room to dance!

Kathryn B.

Yelp
I'm not vegan and still like this place. The Buffalo Soy Curls are flavorful. The drinks aren't my fav but the service and environment is pleasant: nice, clean, spacious and full of natural light. They have a private karaoke room at a price per hour (Listed on the backside of menu, Restricted to 21+). I haven't tried it out because I'm not much of a singer so I'd defer to other reviews or just try it out.

Sarah W.

Yelp
What a great addition to the neighborhood! The cocktails were artfully crafted, the menu was unique and the karaoke room is genius. I enjoyed the True Blue cocktail (the color!!) and would order the Caesar and Brussels Sprouts Grilled Cheese again. After dinner, we ducked into the karaoke room located behind an unmarked black door at the rear of the restaurant and listened to a few great performances before we left. They use a voicebox platform so you can search and add songs to the queue from your phone. Our server told us they plan to build more karaoke rooms upstairs!

Matt E.

Yelp
The company that owns Capitol runs some really badass spaces in town. Century Bar, Victoria, Sweet Hereafter, Bye & Bye. All bars I really like, and all having some similar elements that connect them as a company. They've got some home runs, to be sure. But with Capitol, I think they've got a swing and a miss. Or maybe, since there are some definite positives to the space, it's more of a foul ball? I don't know. Sports metaphors confuse me... ANYHOW. The bar is beautiful, leaps and bounds beyond anything else in the neighborhood. I like that very much. It's also a karaoke bar, which is fun. The karaoke room is kind of tucked away in the back, but if you make your way in there, it's a pretty rad space. I've had some very friendly service there as well. There are some good things, definitely. But what keeps this from being my go-to neighborhood bar? Unfortunately, I really REALLY don't like the cocktail menu. Everything is very tropical and over-the-top sweet. It's just not how I like to drink at all. If you're into that type of thing, this place could be a winner for you. I do also wish they had table service, the lack of which is a common theme at all of this collective's bars. It's frustrating to wait in line for a drink (and what's up with Portland's obsession with single-file lines at bars in the first place?), particularly when it's a place where the drinks take some significant time to make? Not at all the staff's fault, but a really curious decision that I don't understand. Long story short, Capitol is a pretty bar with a friendly staff which makes drinks I don't particularly like. Still, you should definitely check it out, it could be right up your alley.

Critic M.

Yelp
This used to be an all vegan restaurant. There is a new owner and they don't care about animals because they are now serving them on their menu. They do have a few vegan options but to go from all vegan to some vegan is a big step in the wrong direction. I used to be a regular here. I was addicted to the Buffalo bowl. That is no longer available and I don't want to eat here knowing that they made the decision to go from saving animals to abusing animals.

Stas R.

Yelp
Everything about this place was awesome! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was unique and very welcoming, the drinks were above and beyond my expectations. They had a couple of new beers on tap with a German/polish style pilsner that was so good, and we asked for a recommendation for a cocktail and the bartender Mick invented us a creative daiquiri on the spot. Mick gave us exceptionally good service. He talked to us at length about the beers they had on tap, about the food and about their karaoke. He also talked to us about Portland in general when we mentioned we were from out of town. The service made us feel like we were sitting down and catching up with an old friend. Some of the best service we've ever had and we eat out a lot.

Christopher P.

Yelp
I want to like this place more because it's a beautiful bar in a great location with nice staff but I would say the menu is the most disappointing for all of the Lightning Bars. I'm not in the majority here but my gut does not care for potato chips which must include Juanitas due to the high oil content. I may try it again but I definitely will be ordering the salad instead.

Joel M.

Yelp
I usually bring them. You could probably make money by offering them to your patrons for a small price.

Jordan H.

Yelp
My friends and I did a Private party here and it was an amazing experience, the bar showed LOVE, the security was helping us find parking, the DJ was a friend of the bridal party but the sound system and set up was very spacious. There was also a back room they used for Karaoke for the OG's that didn't want to cut a rug. Also just like every place in the Rose city, their food menu was very Vegan friendly for those who like eating leaves and grass

Amanda R.

Yelp
Come hungry, bring friends, & try EVERYTHING. oh & don't forget to mix the vegan Mac with the crab dip. This food is AMAZING.

Alyssa C.

Yelp
I'm writing this review with the disclaimer that I came here the day after this new bar opened. I know that often it takes a little bit of time for new places to get the kinks worked out. That being said, here are my high level thoughts: - Really pretty, bright and open space in a neighborhood that desperately needs more food/drink options - Cocktails are unique and delicious and priced appropriately - Food is overpriced considering portion sizes (I have to pay $1 to add a pickle to my sandwich? Really? Also, the buffalo bowl is comically small). - Food isn't very good (my sandwich bread tasted day old. Didn't you just open yesterday?) - Kitchen is a bit disorganized (my food was forgotten about and I had to go up to the bar and wait in a long line to remind them about my order and I wasn't compensated in any way for the delay). - Beers were only being poured *mostly* full (hey man I didn't ask for a 14 oz pint) I didn't experience the karaoke side of the house so I'm not sure what magic awaits me on the other side of the wall. Overall I think this place has good potential but I probably wouldn't go back until it has been open for a while and found its groove (or when it closes and the next new thing goes up).

Ericka W.

Yelp
It's a new bar... food and drinks are ok... and it's ok to bring your dog in. Bar tender just finished hugging and petting the dog and then didn't wash his hands before taking glasses out of the dishwasher... though I'm kool with dogs that wasn't tight:.. definitely Portland

Hunter S.

Yelp
First of all, this isn't a karaoke bar. There's a TINY room upstairs with karaoke (like ~25 people max!). It's just a bar. Secondly I was standing at the bar WHISTLING tonight and the bartender literally kicked me out because she thought I was whistling to "get her attention" and called security on me and kicked me AND 10 friends out. DUDE. I WAS WHISTLING: IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. Also--that's a LOT OF LOST REVENUE. I hope the owner is reading this. We were polite and kind. Not intoxicated. I just happened to be showing a friend the sound I whistle to my eight year old kid that he likes. FOR FUCKS'S SAKE NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT YOU.

Anjali P.

Yelp
You're paying for the ambience. If you're lucky and the bartender actually makes the drink you ordered, it's likely poorly made. The drinks are over priced and absent of alcohol. The bar was moderately busy and the service was incredibly slow. Was so excited to check out a new bar, left fairly disappointed. Hopefully a few more months open will help better the service.
