The company that owns Capitol runs some really badass spaces in town. Century Bar, Victoria, Sweet Hereafter, Bye & Bye. All bars I really like, and all having some similar elements that connect them as a company. They've got some home runs, to be sure. But with Capitol, I think they've got a swing and a miss. Or maybe, since there are some definite positives to the space, it's more of a foul ball? I don't know. Sports metaphors confuse me...
ANYHOW. The bar is beautiful, leaps and bounds beyond anything else in the neighborhood. I like that very much. It's also a karaoke bar, which is fun. The karaoke room is kind of tucked away in the back, but if you make your way in there, it's a pretty rad space. I've had some very friendly service there as well. There are some good things, definitely.
But what keeps this from being my go-to neighborhood bar? Unfortunately, I really REALLY don't like the cocktail menu. Everything is very tropical and over-the-top sweet. It's just not how I like to drink at all. If you're into that type of thing, this place could be a winner for you.
I do also wish they had table service, the lack of which is a common theme at all of this collective's bars. It's frustrating to wait in line for a drink (and what's up with Portland's obsession with single-file lines at bars in the first place?), particularly when it's a place where the drinks take some significant time to make? Not at all the staff's fault, but a really curious decision that I don't understand.
Long story short, Capitol is a pretty bar with a friendly staff which makes drinks I don't particularly like. Still, you should definitely check it out, it could be right up your alley.
