Metro Detroit’s Best Parks for Picnics - Eater Detroit

"Capitol Park, in one of the city’s trendiest enclaves, is not only surrounded by restaurants and cafes, it comes with a dog park, and is near a coffee shop, a bike store, and the stylish grocery Eatori. If you take a four-legged friend, City Bark can supply treats and dog-friendly water bottles. What to eat: The latest entry to the historic district is Shorty Bell’s Pizza, which serves up $10 brick-oven pies. It’s housed in the soon-to-be Detroit Beer Exchange." - Monica Williams

In 1837, the site was the home of Michigan’s first state capitol building, serving as the seat of government until the capital moved to Lansing in 1847. The building was later repurposed as Detroit’s first public high school before being destroyed by fire in 1893. The land was then converted into a public park, and it has remained a civic space ever since. The park has some trees (not very tall yet), tables and chairs with umbrellas, a historical marker and a statue of Michigan's first governor. It's a nice space and there are some restaurants and bars close by.

Not a big park but a welcoming pocket of downtown, adjacent to Campus Martius which are both great for entertainment and people watching.

Personally find the renovation of this park to be really disappointing - thought it was much nicer looking before.

Beautiful little park right in the heart of Detroit. It's right off the beaten path of Woodward and tucked away behind some of the more popular locales in the city. There are more and more restaurants and bars popping up in the area. It's also right next to one of Detroit's premiere steak houses. There is ample seating and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and relax at a table and enjoy yourself. The only problem is lately there seems to be an uptick in vagrant and drug addicted people in the area. With the "We ❤️ Det" sign and trendiness, this could be one of the signature places that people, especially tourists and outsiders, are drawn to if they feel safe and secure here.

Love this park! It's so relaxing! Lits of great restaurants and cafes in the area! They have a nice dog park as well! Keep your eyes open because they love doing popups here as well!

Peaceful and quiet park in the middle of downtown. WE❤️DET sign is a bonus.

This is a magnificent public space with a dog park, green space, food trucks, restaurants with patio dining, and ground floor retail shops, coffee shops, and more. This is truly an amazing space to be!

Yelp
Located in downtown Detroit, Capitol Park provides a nice area for locals and visitors to enjoy the sights of the city or relax while eating lunch, reading, or just lounging. Nate and I have eaten a few meals from Iggy's Eggies here! On our most recent visit, we had some coffees in this park, as well as lunch before heading home from Detroit. There is plenty of seating including large picnic tables, metal chairs and smaller tables, and some comfy looking hammock chairs. There is a bit of shade from umbrellas, which is great on a super sunny day like we had. Lots of great dog watching here! There's a tiny dog park in this park too. Close to restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. If I lived in the city, I'd bring a blanket and a book and hang out here all the time.

Yelp
What a lovely new space! Cute shops, great food, a sense of community. My new favorite hangout spot after work. There are lots of tables to sit at, a grassy area to lay with a blanket...a new Cantina just opened and it'll only get better from here. This is one of the last places downtown in need of development and it's so nice to see such a vibrant park.

Yelp
Lovely outdoor space. Lots of people out enjoying the day, relaxing, reading, eating, etc. Small dog park next door. Grab a coffee and enjoy Detroit!
