"There are a couple of different food trucks on the north end of town for (white)fish and chips, but Cap’n Ron’s is the OG — made famous when the late Ronald “Captain Ron” Matson, Jr. appeared on an episode of Gordon Ramsey’s Uncharted. Connected with Matson’s Fisheries, a tribal fishery since 1898, there is no more storied place than Munising to try the fresh coast take on this British pub classic." - Stacey Brugeman

Best food I’ve had so far on my road trip to the UP! These guys work hard in the heat and it was super busy. Best fish I’ve had in my life. You can’t beat the $13 for 3 pieces of fish, fries, coleslaw, tartar sauce.

Google
My partner and I stopped by yesterday after craving some local fish during our short trip to Munising and we didn't leave hungry! We ordered the 5-piece lake superior trout basket and it blew our minds! Great portions for the price. The tartar sauce went perfectly with the juicy, crispy fried fish and there were enough fries for both of us to share. The coleslaw was also top notch! I beg any people reading this to stop by if you're in the area, I even saved it on my map for future trips. (There was more food than pictured)

Whitefish and trout are amazing. Portions are very generous. A must stop if you’re in the area. Be sure to walk to the shop below for fresh fish and smoked.

Google
It is a truck. And oddly fantastic food comes out of it. We had the Captain's basket. Both kinds of fish were great. I also appreciated the wooden disposable forks and thin cardboard boxes for food instead of foam or plastic coated stuff. Note that this is a 30 second walk from the kayaking place just north of it. When you finish kayaking, don't move your car -- just walk over and get fish and fries.

After spending the weekend camping at Grand National Island, my friend and I were looking for a great place to eat, fish specifically. We found this place and left with a great impression. Sadly they did not have Lake Superior trout, but the white fried fish was very delicious, and the fires too. I loved the sauces and Coleslaw too. 10/10

Google
We went out for the Pictured Rocks cruise and were told this was the best white fish in the city and I would 100% agree with that. A little ways out of town but this place is a hidden gem. We ordered white fish dip and two five piece white fish baskets. There was a sign on the window saying they only take cash but their card reader was working yesterday when we came! We had to wait about 5-10 minutes because they had to grab more fish from the dock. Totally worth the wait! The white fish dip was the best I’ve had in all the summers we’ve visited Michigan and the fried pita that came with it to dip was super warm and delicious. There is a little fridge you can buy some coke products and water. The baskets were also incredible, fresh and hot! Best white fish we’ve had and the sauce, fries & coleslaw were all perfect additives! Everyone was super kind and kept us up to date on if they were getting more fish. We sat on picnic tables next to the food truck and enjoyed the beautiful weather. We went around 1500 and there was a decent line after we got there so I would guess this place stays busy! We will 100% be back here!

Google
Great spot to enjoy whitefish and lake trout. The fries were thick cut with a nice crunch on the outside. Prices were very reasonable. The whitefish fillets we got were thick and meaty. Seating is limited to the 3 picnic tables in the parking lot. Fish was better than what we had in a restaurant 2 nights before for half the cost!

Google
The fish here is amazing. It was the freshest fish I’ve had in the UP and the best fish basket. I ate lunch here and the prices are good and the portions are big. They even let me eat my lunch on the dock. This place is legit. Gordon Ramsey had eaten there as well. It’s tucked away on a small side street right on the lake. They are connected to Matsons Fisheries and not only provide traditional fresh and smoked fish but also his unique blend of ingredients to their smoked fish dip and smoked fish sausage, and fish and chips. Lunch with a a nice view of lake.

Yelp
This was the BEST whitefish I've ever had, no contest. It's a little food truck tucked away in Munising, with a small store and smokehouse - I highly recommend the smoked whitefish dip, I literally ate the whole container in one sitting haha There's nothing better than sitting on a picnic table in the sunshine with a delicious pile of fresh fish in front of you :)

Ashley H.

Yelp
Hot & Fresh! This food truck may be tucked away heading out of town, but is a must stop. The fish is caught daily out on Lake Superior, processed by the Matson family, then brought to their food truck for you to enjoy. Due to winds they didn't have any trout since fishing was cancelled that day. So that meant double whitefish in the Cap's Basket, and the whitefish was delicious. Thin breading, flaky, and piping hot. Every order is cooked to order and the fries too. The coleslaw is crunchy with the perfect amount of acid to balance out the creaminess. The fish sandwich was the perfect ratio fish to bun. The homemade tartar sauce is the perfect accompaniment and doesn't over power the fish. Seating is outside only to plan accordingly. Between the freshness of the food, the service, and the price point I Highly recommend!

Perry B.

Yelp
We split the 10 piece whitefish basket between 3 of us and had more than plenty to eat and some left over. The whitefish is so fresh and flavorful, and they really got the breading perfect also. So often, only one of these things are done tastefully. At Cap'n Ron's, the meat was phenomenal and the breading was thin, crispy and the absolute ideal amount. The cole slaw was so-so, but the homemade tartar sauce was a nice compliment. Fries were perfect as well. Nice people and quality fresh fish.

Becky H.

Yelp
Went on the recommendation from a gas station clerk, she mentioned Gordan Ramsey had visited (or something). I picked up a 3 piece fried trout basket which came with slaw and fries. Everything is fresh!! They get the fish from the fish market behind them so you know you're eating a fresh catch then the bread and fry it while you're waiting. The batter was super thin and tasty. My 7 year old couldn't get enough! Turns out Gordan Ramsey stopped here after his producers had and then ended up filming a segment called "Michigan's Yooper Cuisine," on his show "Unchartered". Pretty cool tidbit of information.

Yelp
DELICIOUS! We walked 1.5 miles from downtown Munising to visit Cap'n Ron's Fish and Chips. I'd done some research about the best fish and chips in the area and saw rave reviews about this place so of course we had to check it out! They're only open seasonally and we came at the end of September so we were lucky to catch them while they were still here. They're a bit hidden on the side of the road but Apple/Google maps will take you right there! Service was friendly, I think we'd gotten there right before the lunch rush so no one was inside the truck when we got there but they were super speedy once they saw we were waiting. The fish itself was delicious, I've never had smoked fish before but it was tender and really did melt in your mouth. I saw some reviews that things were too greasy but I didn't find that to be true at all. The homemade tartar sauce was sooooo good like seriously the best tartar sauce I've ever had and definitely took the fish to another level. It was a beautiful day and the picnic seating was great to take in the sun and enjoy a nice summer/fall day!

David D.

Yelp
Excellent white fish! Melts in your mouth! Cooked fresh every time! (And the smoked fish down at the nearby shop is good too)

Duane B.

Yelp
We have always wanted to stop here every time we pass through Munising. We finally made the stop this evening on our way through. The whitefish basket was fresh and tasted great. The service was fast and friendly. The cook even took the time to ask us how our meal was. We will definitely stop here again.

Lisette H.

Yelp
Best fish and chips I had so far! Cap'n Ron's is a food truck with a few tables in front and located on the side of the road. Nothing fancy but the fish is fresh and delicious. A must try after your trip to Pictured Rocks. FYI, they only take cash.

Judy V.

Yelp
Excellent fish! The batter was just right and the white chunks of fish tasted so good. The smoked fish dip was fabulous! I would definitely recommend stopping here!!

Amanda P.

Yelp
I stopped here on my hunt for some smoked white fish while in the upper peninsula traveling to see the picture rocks. I'm so glad I stopped. The dip is on a whole another level it's completely amazing. It's fresh and meaty and creamy and the pita chips I believe are homemade if not I'd like to know the brand. The fried whitefish was more like a pan fry and less like a deep fry which I didn't mind and the trout was delicious also everything was just so fresh. There's a couple picnic tables for dining. It's near the fish market for browsing for souvenirs and other fish like perch & whitefish. It's off of the main highway so it's easy on and easy off. Parking is a little tight. I walked around a little bit and noticed an old school fish house for smoking The walls were thick with black smoke. It was pretty amazing and the flavor definitely came through in the fish. Get some smoked fish to go. They could use a little s&p but otherwise deliciousness. The service was really quick and came with a smile I would definitely go back. You should make a stop You won't be sorry.

Connie L.

Yelp
So good! The fries are a must and the fish was fresh and delish. Parking was a bit of a challenge but would go back again.

Amy S.

Yelp
We stopped into their store for some smoked trout and white fish to bring home with us and were helped by one of the owners who was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I bought a pair of beaded earrings made by the owner's daughters that are exquisitely made and beautiful. While we missed their exception fish fry, we will definitely be back to try it when we're in the UP again!

Tyra L.

Yelp
Fish tasted pretty good, but we both got sick later. Maybe old fryer oil? There were also lots of flies around the seating area. Not their fault but pretty annoying if you want to sit and eat.

Amy S.

Yelp
Was recommended here by our pictured rocks kayaking tour guide who grew up in the area. He said he saw them fishing that very morning! So fish must be fresh and it tasted very fresh. We got the fish basket with the trout and 3 pieces. And we definitely got more than 3 pieces which is very generous of them! Fish was cooked perfectly and the fries were excellent. Coleslaw was nice and refreshing as well. Food came out really fast. There were 3 tables in front of the truck and parking near the truck was easy to find.

Anne R.

Yelp
Have to admit we were a little skeptical of a food truck with 5 star reviews, but this place didn't disappoint! We arrived later in the day after the Pictured Rocks boat tour, so they were out of trout, but the whitefish & fries were both delicious. We got it to go and went and found a spot overlooking the water to enjoy the meal. Great, quick, tasty option if you're getting off the boat and want to avoid crowds at a sit-down restaurant nearby.

Mary K.

Yelp
I read some good reviews here, but in the end I was disappointed because the whitefish were really greasy. I could taste the oil all afternoon. Service at the food truck was fine. French fries were good but greasy too.

Nate K.

Yelp
Small menu but the best fish and chips in town by far. Service was fast but be warned they are cash only. Beautiful spot by the lake where you can enjoy your meal

Janet S.

Yelp
On Yelp this place was stated as being open until 8 pm. Drove one hour to get there only to find out that they had closed 3 weeks ago Very disappointed.

Nick B.

Yelp
Fast and delicious. Great price. Good quality of food. Got the fried whitefish with fries. Not disappointed at all. Caught within 24 hours or less of hitting your tongue.

MJ F.

Yelp
Fries would have been good if they were hot. Fish was not fresh. Kind of rubbery. Cole slaw was ok. Garbage cans on both ends of the food truck smelled really bad. I don't know how anyone could sit at his picnic tables and eat with the smell. Wouldn't go back.

Kailee C.

Yelp
If you're looking for some awesome local freshly made fish and chips, this is your place. It's just a bit out of downtown Munising. If you like fish, I recommend getting the Lake Superior trout. I got the 3 piece Fried Fish Basket and it was a huge portion of fish, fresh crispy French fries, coleslaw, and homemade tartar sauce. They also had a few drinks for purchase or chicken strips. There are picnic tables in front of the food truck and it's right on the lake. Great spot after a long day of kayaking!

Kristi W.

Yelp
I got my boys the fried white fish and lake trout, and they loved it, loved the light batter. There were locals in line chatting it up too, if the locals are there, usually a great sign!

Morgan N.

Yelp
Not sure why we waited until our last day in Munising to try Cap'n Ron's but it is a regret that will haunt me for the end of my days. Or at least until we are back in the UP again. Coming from someone that doesn't like fried fish, this fried fish is not your usual fried fish. This fried fish is delicious! Like, wish I had some right now but I'm 350 miles away amazing! The whitefish was light, not greasy, and stayed flaky even as leftovers several hours later. My husband and I argued over the last piece, I won obviously. Hats off to you Cap'n Ron and crew! We salute you!

Julie S.

Yelp
The best fish and chips I've had! A must stop if you're in Munising! So fresh, fast service, highly recommend

Kim K.

Yelp
The fried trout was fresh, lightly battered, and delicious. Fries were extra crispy. It's some of the best freshwater fish I have eaten. 3 piece meal was more than enough for dinner!

Dave Z.

Yelp
Delicious fish and chips. Not greasy at all. Don't like usual breaded fish that has no fish at all and tons of breading. This place has fresh moist big chunks of fish coated with very crispy but thin coating. The fries are great too. The cole slaw is more vinegary than mayo-ey. You have the super creamy tartar sauce to compliment. One thing I wish they would add is a lemon wedge. Check out the market down the hill for fish dips and smoked fish. Looks handcrafted and well priced.

Joe L.

Yelp
Great food -- super fresh fish -- huge serving of fires -- great coleslaw. Perfect. Will return.

Olive O.

Yelp
The lady in front of me received her box of fish and chip, looked in the box and asked where the rest of it was? The lady in the truck said: "It's all in there, GRANDMA". Inexcusable rudeness from this truck of idiots. I got our 6 piece captains meal. There are no pieces. There are little nuggets. You would need to spend at least $50 for two to have enough food here. But then the real problem is you don't want it because it doesn't taste like anything. They fry this fish with the skin on. YUCK!!! They don't give you a fork or napkins. This is one truck that should be passed by. I do not understand how they ever got a good review, must have a lot of relatives.

Corey B.

Yelp
Very good fish and chips! Fresh hot pieces of Whitefish, large portion of fries, and tangy coleslaw. Fish was in more of a seasoning than a batter, and it was great.

Kimberly H.

Yelp
The white fish, frys and coleslaw are good. The fish nuggets were hot because they make it to order. We also had a chicken strip and fry basket. The frys were plenty but the chicken over cooked. There's no place to sit as you wait, a few picnic tables are exposed to the weather. Parking to get to the truck and climbing the hill isn't for anyone with issues.. I'm glad we tried it. But trying another food truck next time.

Urban H.

Yelp
Love the fish. Love his store for smoked whitefish and trout. Waiting for it to open.

Mark S.

Yelp
Great food. Would definitely eat there again. Try the white fish. Interesting location

Patrick A.

Yelp
Tried and true. Visited 3 times over course of a week. Had both the lake trout and whitefish 3-piece dinners both were excellent and fairly priced. Best of all the 3-piece filled me up! Not bad for $12! Bring cash or pay extra for visa fee. As others stated, lightly battered and not too greasy, nice chunks of fish and crispy fries. Great coleslaw too! Be prepared to wait if they are busy, but we'll worth it!

Mary P.

Yelp
We got the Cap'ns Basket. The fish was delicious!! Perfectly flaky and moist with a perfect coating. The fries were great and the coleslaw was probably the best Ive had.! We've never had lake trout and it was our favorite with the Whitefish a very close second. The portion was huge and plenty for me and my husband. The people were very nice. Highly recommend!!

JuJuu B.

Yelp
Had the whitefish sandwich. Hidden in the lettuce was 1 piece of fish jerky that was maybe 2" x 2.5". There was literally nothing on half of the dry old hamburger bun it came on. I hoped for better as I ate there last year and it was good. I saw another gentleman eating the same thing and he had two very small pieces of fish on his sandwich. $11 for a cheese lettuce and tartar sauce sandwich. I was too far down the road to take it back. Seagulls appreciated it...very disappointed certainly will not be back.

Christina L.

Yelp
Yum! Service was great, fish and fries were fresh and hot. Three picnic tables to choose from and all were clean. We had a basket of whitefish and fries - plenty for both of us. They gave us plenty napkins and utensils. Everything was so good that we forgot to get a picture before the box was empty. Can't wait to come back on our next visit!

Brandy M.

Yelp
Best White fish in town! Great fries! Best prices in town as well! My boyfriend loves the Lake Trout. Next time I really want to try the smoked fish made into a dip. That sounds amazing as well.

James S.

Yelp
Really good fresh Lake Superior fish and chicken tenders. Worth stopping in and trying

John B.

Yelp
This is without a doubt some of the best fresh water fish and chips I have ever had. Because it is a 'food truck' they don't start cooking it until you place the order so it does take a bit of time to get out, but it is well worth the wait. We had the combo that included both whitefish and lake trout, (I prefer the trout and my wife the whitefish) and it was crispy on the outside and moist and perfectly done on the inside. They also make some of the best chips (fries) because they batter them before the fry them making them extra crispy.

Joseph B.

Yelp
Not the most beautiful thing you ever saw but the Fish is the best in the UP. It doesn't come any fresher. Lightly breaded and cooked to perfection straight from the Lake Superior dock 100 feet away. This fish is light years ahead of Anything you'll eat and overpay for on mackinaw island! They know what they are doing on this truck. Better than any walleye or perch Ive had on Erie hands down. Way to go Ron!

Cheryl W.

Yelp
This fish and chips food truck is delicious. A lot of food for the price. Did not disappoint!

Carol C.

Yelp
We went off the yelp reviews and we were not happy. The fish and fries were both very greasy. Usually we have good luck with food trucks, but not this one.

E. Kathleen G.

Yelp
Don't judge this book by it's cover. The whitefish and trout were awesome! The service was friendly! One of the best meal stops we made while traveling the UP. Don't miss out!!!!

Allison G.

Yelp
Found this place by a local's recommendation and it was great. Fresh whitefish and trout and fries. Great food highly recommend taking the trip.
