Since moving across the river, I'd been on the hunt for an Italian hero that could go toe to toe with Second Street or Andrea's in Jersey City. Cappone's definitely fit the bill.
Tucked into a shady corner of 8th Ave on the north end of the West Village, Cappone's deals out about a dozen and a half varieties of cold sandwiches and another half dozen or so hot, all made in house.
Order at the register, choose your bread (seeded semolina, unseeded semolina, ciabatta, brick oven), and be prepared to wait, particularly during the lunch rush
You probably won't go wrong with anything you choose, but I kept it to the classic Cappone (capicola,, soppresatta, salami, fresh mozz, provolone, arugula, hot peppers, balsamic) on ciabatta, figuring the ciabatta would hold up better since I'd only eat half for lunch and chuck the rest in the fridge.
The sandwich was spot on: loaded with quality meat/cheese, and the saltiness offset by the creamy mozzarella.
The sandwiches don't come cheap ($18-22), but you'll get two solid meals out of them. Places like this stay in business in the Village for a reason.
