We have dined at Captain Benny's on South Main for nearly fifty years. The food, ambience and wait staff have always been great. Recently we stopped in for lunch. We ordered a half dozen Benny's Baked Oysters. They were delicious although pricey at $2.50 each. But hey, everyone deserves a treat now and then. For health reasons, we ordered broiled platters which included, a tilapia filet, 6 or 8 "scallops" (doubt that they were real scallops but instead quarter size pieces of pollock), 6 shrimp/bell pepper/onion (skewer), garlic bread, "dirty" rice with shrimp, and cole slaw. Condiments were of course the usual tartar and shrimp cocktail sauce. This was the second of two of the worst meals we have ever been served there. The food was over-broiled to the point that it was virtually inedible. The "scallops" were dry, tasteless and had the consistency of rubber. The shrimp were also dry, tasteless and although not as tough as the "scallops" they took some chewing. The filet was dry to the point that when cutting it, it just disintegrated. And the entire dish was covered in what appeared to be paprika. The tartar sauce did not have that distinctive tartar sauce taste. The cole slaw dressing, if it had any, had no taste whatsoever. What we are sure of, Captain Benny's will now become history. We won't be back.
