The 25 Best Places To Eat & Drink In Hong Kong - Hong Kong - The Infatuation

"Captain’s Bar is in the Mandarin Oriental and has a dress code after 5pm, which is kind of all you need to know. It wouldn’t have felt out of place in the old British days, and is still the bar of choice for the after-work drinks crowd. That said, it’s worth stopping in for a drink to soak up the atmosphere. Beers are served in silver mugs (if you’re a regular, you’ll get a special one with your name etched on it) and the martinis are legendary." - jess basser sanders

20 Best Bars in Hong Kong

"Captain's Bar is an unbeatable choice for most occasions: schmoozing clients, toasting a friend's birthday, or treating a date to smooth jazz and smoother martinis. Power lunchers flock here for Indian cuisine—lamb samosas, chicken tikka makhni, and lamb curry. Come evening, the bar serves a pared-down snack menu. Come to this after-work watering hole often enough, and you may get to display your own engraved silver beer tankard behind the bar." - Kate Springer

The seating arrangement was the best aspect of the experience. cocktails were served in good size as seen in the photo. Not seen or served when I first arrived waiting for 5 minutes before leaving, but was finally served when I returned after 10 minutes. Always busy, as the staff told me.

This is a very old school Hong Kong style of bar. Expect excellent service. Good drinks. Complimentary olives, nuts and potato chips are provided and are refilled as long as you keep ordering drinks.

Good place to relax and chill, went on a Thursday night and unlike the other bars, they didn’t emphasize on stuff such as 1hr max per table. Service crew will also come refil your chips and cashews. (PS# chips are BBQ flavoured) Drinks are so-so, but great for chillin. There is a live band which isn’t too loud so people can still chat without shouting over their lungs.

Really, no complaints on all aspects of the dining experience. We watched a performance in City Hall and the Captain’s Bar is the perfect post-show drinks venue. We had some good light snacks, and ordered wine to chat in leisure. The live music was good, and even at late night it was full house. Of course, the crowd there is classy and everything was posh.

High end hotel jazz bar. Live music until about 11pm. We came here at around 10.30pm without a reservation. There wasn't any seats available so we waited inside the bar in the standing area. We placed our order and after waiting 10 minutes we had the next free table. Comfortable red leather seats. We ordered cocktail. They have a small stage at the full of the bar. We were able to catch a few songs before the performers stopped performance for the night. Popular bar. Bar empties out after 11pm when the Live performance stops. We left around 11.30pm. Great place to have a quiet drinks in Central, the band there (I think they are call the Captain Band) is really good, we went there for a drink after a busy day to relax, ordered a drink each and they offered some snacks which was very nice. Price was reasonable as well given the location and the service was impeccable!

Captain's Bar at Mandarin Oriental is is a legacy bar from the old days of Hong Kong. This bar has been around for over 50 years. It is classy place with red leather seating, traditional colonial era decor, seasoned waitstaff and a good drink list. Opening hours are 11am to 1am daily. We visited recently for a couple rounds of drinks. Cocktails are made well. The old-fashioned is bourbon and is a fair mix of stiff and sweet. White Russian was also a well-mixed drink. Drinks are served with chili peanuts and bbq crisps bar snacks, a good complement to the drinks. You can order lunch at Captain's Bar during weekdays. Dress code is comfortable attire before 5pm and slightly more formal afterwards (no shorts, open toed sandals, etc.) In the end, Captain's Bar is a neat place for a round or two if want to experience one of HK's traditional, old-school bars. You'll find it on the ground floor next to the check-in counters. Note that there is a small bar seating at the Chinnery restaurant at MO (1/F) that has a similarly nostalgic atmosphere. For something more modern and trendy, try the M Bar on the 25th floor of the hotel.

Wonderful cozy bar in the Mandarin Oriental. The live music and service were very good. Would be great if the cocktails were slightly more bespoke - given the price point and location. Thank you for having us!

Yelp
At the Captain's Bar on the ground floor of the Mandarin Oriental you will find people doing work, just finishing work or dodging work all in one place. The Captain's Bar feels like a real throwback: dark leather, wood paneling, and smartly dress waiters serving up carefully crafted drinks with impeccable service. I am partial to the Old Fashioned here -- my pick for the best Old Fashioned in the city -- which is served in a no-nonsense manner with a simple twist and without any oranges or cherries to distract from the bourbon. There is a full bar that I would imagine can whip up any cocktail you can think of, and a pretty solid beer selection to boot. Draft beers are famously served in metal tankards, which seems to keep them colder and give them a bit of a (pleasant) metallic tang. A popular happy hour spot with the business set, it can get crowded, so arrive by 6 or 6:30 to secure the comfortable couch seating along the perimeter. Although probably not surprising because it is housed in the Mandarin Oriental, I have been surprised at how good the food is here. You have access to a fairly large menu, from bar snacks for sharing to meals fit for a full lunch or dinner. I tried the satay recently and it was well grilled, juicy and the peanut sauce was a nice compliment. Because it is easy to run up a hefty bill here, the Captain's Bar is best enjoyed for a good cocktail or two and a snack before moving on. There also is live jazz music played at times from a small stage in the corner, which may be a draw for some, but I actually find a bit too loud for my taste. It could be that's because the stage is right next to my favorite table, but I tend to filter out as the band filters in.

Yelp
I came here because the Chinnery was full and I was told that I could order the same curry at the Captain's room. I ordered the triple tier lamb curry, which means that it comes with naan and rice. It is called triple tier because it comes in a stack of pots with the aforementioned food. The curry was good but not out of this world. I've had many curries that I thought were just as good. My thinking is that if I come to HK to get Indian curry, it should be phenomenal. If your goal is to meet your curry fix, then this is good. I also ordered a mango lassi. It was quite light, compared to many of the heavier lassi's I've had at other restaurants. It was very refreshing. Nonetheless, the environment is quite nice and the service is good.

Yelp
My favorite watering hole in Central Hong Kong. Dark woods and leather give it that old school private club feel. Servers dressed in white shirts, bow ties and vests are super attentive. It's crowed most cocktail hour times, but the staff will find you a cozy chair to settle in and relax. Simple snacks are complimentary. Don't conduct business there, just enjoy.

Yelp
This is a review for the curry lunch. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and was even good value. We had the butter chicken, prawn madras & samosas all of which were excellent. The sofas made it feel cosy and as usual the service was first rate. I will definitely be back.
