Early Bird Specials in South Florida Are Dying, Thanks to Baby Boomers | Eater

"One of the few local restaurants where an early-dinner line still forms; its early-bird dinner priced around $10.95 draws predominantly elderly patrons (with younger people typically accompanying them as caregivers or family), and some reviewers note the venue feels like an older, established restaurant." - Jaya Saxena

Google
Captains Catch Seafood restaurant is located in an unassuming strip mall on South Military Trail in Boynton Beach. It is a local family establishment that’s very homey and decorated it with nautical and cozy themed fishing items. They have very good food and early bird special that includes dessert and coffee and always great service. On my recent visit, I had the scrod oreganato and my mother had the scallops which is her favorite. The food comes with two sides, soup or salad and of course, their homemade bread. I love everything here. Definitely visit if you’re in town or if you live in the local area. Big menu, nice service and really good food.

Google
First and foremost Nico was beyond outstanding! 20 stars if I could give! The food… out of this world! the scallops melt like butter in your mouth and the steak might make you drop your jaw! Outstanding experience I have found my new favorite hidden gem!

Dan

Google
Absolutely horrible, fish and (chips) baked potato were terrible, frozen fish that was mushy, couldn't even eat it all. Potato was tiny, and broccoli was brown, see pic. Wife got fried scallops for $30, 6 tiny scallops and tiny baked potato. Fish chowder was dark brown, like a stew, with no fish at all. Definitely won't be back there and I hope you dont go either.

Had a steamed lobster for dinner one night. It was delicious! Service was friendly and very good. I highly recommend this restaurant. By the way....call and order the size lobster you prefer for dinner the day before. I heard they sometimes run out!

Google
Thank you this is always an excellent meal. We all had fish dishes and we were all extremely satisfied. It’s a very cozy place with terrific ambience and decoration. Kind of old school with the service was fantastic and the food was outstanding.

Google
The food was most brilliant my favorite of which being the Captain’s fried combo with the shrimp which blew me away. It felt as though the shrimp had tucked me in the bed with the gentle care of a parent. The staff was amazing and attentive Nico our extraordinary waiter brought our food with a smile. I recommend this place to everyone and will be back.

I came with my 95yo grandfather and was served by Madison, who was unbelievably kind and a fantastic server. My grandad didn’t love his original dish (his fault, not the kitchen’s) so Madison brought him something else that he really liked totally on the house, joked around with him, and was generally wonderful. Excellent service - many many thanks!

Google
Very basic seafood restaurant. I thought the service was good and attentive and friendly enough. Sat outside on a Sunday evening. Their specials on the board were mostly just the market price for the day. Food was average at best. Most of our food ordered was swimming in garlic oil and not in a good way. The meal includes a fresh baked loaf of honey wheat bread and butter, plus a choice of soup or salad and they were nothing special. The salad was okay though they don't make any dressings in house. The Manhatten Chowder was a little fishy and lacking seasoning. The softshell crabs were obviously prefrozen as they are not in season but they were harvested as babies and very tiny. The stuffed shrimp were good sized and most likely fresh but the crab meat did not seem house made. The house veggies of the day were cooked right but served in way too much oil. Probably a one and done visit.

Yelp
Wanted lobster for dinner and Captain's Catch was recommended by friends. 2 lb lobsters a little pricy but so worth it. The lobster was beyond delicious. Started with NE clam chowder which was loaded with clams and very tasty. Service was friendly and attentive. Definitely going back!!

Yelp
I initially came to this restaurant because I went on Google to find restaurants nearby that serves seafood oysters, in particular. Upon arrival I found out they did not have the raw oysters that I was looking for, and I was going to leave, but I thought why not try it out. The food in this place is not necessarily the type of seafood restaurant I was looking for it's more of an Italian restaurant I'm not too sure they have a bunch of random things on the menu. The food wasn't seasoned at all. It just wasn't good. I wouldn't come back here. I don't know if they don't season because of the type of customers they have, but if you like flavorful food, don't come here. I also thought it was weird and really cheap for them to only have the little prepackaged butter, especially for the price point of this restaurant. You should at least have normal butter. It's not like it's takeout. I feel like this restaurant accommodates their clients because they're so old. There's no reason to be serving a baked potato with NO seasoning!!! 0/10!!

Yelp
We had a good experience here even though we didn't have a full dinner. Prices for seafood are not inexpensive at the moment, and the regular menu reflects that. We'd remembered coming to this restaurant before, but it was in a different, larger and free-standing location. This restaurant is small and in the middle of a strip of stores. There's still ample parking right outside. Inside, the restaurant is cozy with tables and booths quite close to each other. We were there later than their early bird menu allowed, but we did look it over just for future reference. Prices for entrees are the same as on the regular menu, but in addition you also get your choice of soup or salad as well as coffee and dessert. When we arrived, there were several couples enjoying the last of this discounted option. I'd been craving lobster. There was a fra diabolo lobster special on the black board, but I didn't want pasta nor spicy. Asking about the various regular lobster choices, the server told us about the basics on up to a (huge) 5-pounder -- that she suggested we could share. I wasn't hungry enough to warrant the starting price of almost $40 so I passed on getting lobster. They brought out a small loaf of warm bread, complimentary. And took our drink orders right away. Instead of a full meal, we each started with a cup of their soup. I had their clam chowder which was thick and creamy. My husband had their tomato-based fish chowder. I tasted his soup. And his was better. He wasn't hungry after the soup, so he just had a gorgonzola salad. He said the salad -- he added blue cheese dressing (!) --was very good. I tried their soft shell crab appetizer. It was two small crabs sauteed in garlic butter. Even though it was a small portion, it was quite tasty. I was happy that they offered an option other than fried, as well. Service was excellent throughout -- friendly and personable -- even though it was quite busy on a Friday night. My husband enjoyed a glass of sauvignon blanc with his food; I just got a soda which they refilled. And they were nice enough to let us taste their coconut cake dessert (one of the early bird options). We'd certainly come back again in the future. And I'll be keeping my eye open for when they offer their lobster specials, again.

Yelp
The Captain's Catch used to be a free-standing location in the same plaza, now standing in the center of a string of various retail stores. The inside is compact and you can see other diners' orders as the server "crab walks" the food to your table. We arrived too late to take advantage of the Happy Hour offerings which do look interesting enough to try on a future visit. Our server was prompt and helpful. I ordered a red fish chowder and a Gorgonzola Salad with additional Blue Cheese dressing, which with the warm bread, was very good. My wife had clam chowder and sauteed soft shell crabs which she enjoyed. I also enjoyed a glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc with my meal. We really liked their Coconut Cake and will order for dessert on our next trip back here. We also hope to catch one of their Lobster Special nights that we so enjoyed at their previous location.

Yelp
What a great seafood restaurant! First, I want to acknowledge our server, Madison, who was perfect! The food: calamari appetizer, clam chowder, scrod, & sea bass-- all excellent . Also, arriving around 7 PM, there were 2-for-1 Yuenlings until closing. Madison even gave us a special dessert on the house, their delicious coconut cake, to celebrate an anniversary!

Yelp
Food is very good, service is also good, have never had a problem, but a few days ago tried to order for pick up and the person who answered actually tried their best to keep me from ordering told me that it would be at least an hour and a half to 2 hrs before the food would be ready, didn't even try to get me to order, I'm sure the owner would have been more accomodating, wont be going there for a while.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered a carryout for this evening from Captains Catch in Boynton Beach . I had baked scrod and my husband had fish and chips. Both dinners were excellent.! We were pleased with everything . Liz the manager was great and we will definitely be back again soon !!!

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous lobster I think we got a 4 pound lobster under $100 fabulous the service was fabulous. You must try it.

Yelp
HIDDEN GEM I thought this place closed down when the original building disappeared to find it in the plaza! Fresh seafood! Apps of oysters and calamari cooked to perfection, snapper bruschetta to die for, perfect sautéed scallops, scrumptious miso salmon, calamari marinara to swoon over. "Chefs Kiss" found my new fresh seafood spot ! A Must try if you've never been! Fair market prices too not overpriced like the spots on the water and downtown Boca.

Yelp
The food was well prepared, fresh and tasty. All four of us enjoyed our dinners, three had halibut and I had scallops. I also enjoyed my Caesar Salad. Gianna was our server and she was thoughtful and effective. The restaurant was cozy and pleasant. We had no wait on Wednesday evening. Pricing was fair for what was provided. We skipped dessert, both because we were plenty full, but really, $12.95 for dessert, a little steep.

Michael Z.

Yelp
Local review!!! Love this place, best soft shell crab. Service was great, felt like I was in the pirates of the Caribbean. They have a $29.99 PRIME 12oz Delmonico! Holy holy!! I think their lobster fradivalo is the best in Florida. I posted about it on instagram @mikeiseating https://www.instagram.com/reel/DB6gAd_vbc6/?igsh=d3NiMWlhYWM3OXBj

Yelp
I have never been able to snag a table at this restaurant, but the outdoor bar suits me just fine. If you hang around a bit, you're likely to score a small table and one of the best views of the Intracoastal in Palm beach county. The fish specials aren't as good as the fish that are grilled to order so I would stay away from those. Always a delightful evening at this restaurant and good for people watching too!

Susan M.

Yelp
The lobster had no taste and was incredibly chewy! One lobster had very little meat for a 2 lb lobster.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
This was my second time trying and the LAST. Wow this place is so overpriced and the service is just awful. There was 3 tables when we arrived when they opened at 4pm. Our server kept disappearing and didn't check in on us until we got up and had to find her. The wheat bread they give the table is just awful and cold. The Cesar salad had bottled parmesan cheese and you have to pay extra for it. Get it together!

M R.

Yelp
Best seafood restaurant in palm Beach County. Been eating here for many years. The food is always fresh.

Yelp
I took my family for lobster, and I couldn't have picked a better restaurant! The staff was so sweet and attentive to everything we needed. I absolutely loved the cute atmosphere and found it to be a true mom-and-pop restaurant, which is hard to come by. I also want to mention that the lobsters were cracked to make it easier, and they were delicious! We loved everything about this hidden gem!

Mauricio F.

Yelp
Just ate there at mother's day. Incredible seafood. Their bread is so soft and delicious. Great service and price.

Frank R.

Yelp
The ONLY good thing about this 'restaurant' was the server. Calamari appetizer Very Undercooked and apparently in under temperature oil as was Extremely Greasy. Scrod Oreganato a TOTAL Embarassment obviously bottled Raw minced garlic added with bread crumbs which Permeated this 'dish'. I don't know if they had an actual Chef in the kitchen this night as Everything seemed like an poor amateurish attempt that didn't work.

Yelp
Nothing good to say....about food, service, ... treated extremely poorly... So many other restaurants that have great food, service and treat their guests with respect!! FYI.... To reply to nasty, owner......Yes, Let's have the accurate story.....I called around 5 pm from Wellington, to say we were leaving, and do we need reservations... hostess ( mgmt) said, well, I will put you guys in ( not knowing that meant, that she made us a reservation for 5:15 ...found out when we arrived, at 6pm, and hostess said we had a 5:15 reservation.....didn't know what she was talking about!!!.). I tried to call, by the way, at least twice, or more, in fact!!; No ONE answered the phone, to let them know, that there was as a great deal of traffic and we were trying to get there by 6pm!! Anyway, we were waiting outside, as asked in the cold temperatures, and finally asked to wait in our car, and someone will call us...after 6:30 or so, we got out of car ( no phone call).. and many parties were being seated ahead of us! ... waited another 20 minutes outside, then seated at the worst small table for 2! Waited at least 45 minutes till a waitress, finally came over, another 1/2 hour or so till food came out, and was surprised to see a very thin well done steak!...... Wanted to order a rare Delmonico steak.. waitress convinced me to order medium rare... came out as stated, well done, and very thin...returned it, and she asked me to try fish, perhaps, broiled snapper, ( that would be better), so I said, fine, and she came back 10 minutes later and said.. No snapper!... I had no dinner! We were treated like second class citizens... just awful! Do not appreciate, the overall experience, at restaurant and here! Mgmt team, are lying to you!!

Yelp
We come often for the lobster tail ( it's huge 8 ounces ) and the miso salmon. All the fish dishes we have ordered we have enjoyed, I also like the cup of lentil soup or salad as the starter. All the suport staff and waitresses are friendly too.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Probably the best linguini with white clam sauce I've enjoyed in Florida!!! Friendly and polite staff. Enjoyed!!

Marianne C.

Yelp
First time at Captain's Catch...thought it was all seafood. All four of us ordered parmigiana, chicken, eggplant, veal, and it was delicious! Generous portion with salad, vegetable, and starch included at a very reasonable price. Server was friendly & efficient. Definitely going back.

Yelp
This is a good little seafood restraint with a great atmosphere and friendly service. I met the owners, and they ate genuinely very good people. I would recommend this place on that alone, but the the food is tremendous as well. I had a large lobster which was amazing! The fish and chips are some of the best I've had anywhere as well (including in london). I also ordered another fish dish which I loved as well but can't remember which one it was (maybe pecan crusted grouper). Overall I would highly recommend this place for food quality, fun atmosphere and amazing people! I will come here again and again!
google avatar

Dante D.

Yelp
Great local eatery! I'm shocked, however, to see ANY negative reviews about this place. The owners go above and beyond to ensure our meal is perfect on every visit. I've enjoyed most of the menu items from the Pecan crusted Trout to the Shrimp Chef's Special to the Coconut cake for dessert and I'm always very happy with my entire meal.

Denise A.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous. I had sauté calamari with a red sauce over linguine. My husband had some dish with a lot of muscles clams lobster over linguine and my mom had one in a quarter pounds lobster. We took dessert to go. I thought this place was wonderful absolutely wonderful.

Rosemary O.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday night. Early birders where still there. The food had absolutely no taste. Soup was watered down with no taste. The place was 99% white hairs. Man in next booth was describing his recent colonastemy to the table of 6. I had never seen scallops soggy brown before. The $37.99 Stuffed shrimp was NOT good. You could go to Gordons and see the whole menu in the frozen isle. Very say to spend that kind of money for poor food with no taste. Won't return.

Larry K.

Yelp
Their lobster specials (with a coupon) are great! Both food and service are good and well worth the trip.

Yelp
My fish entree was ok. We had called from home and were encouraged to come. When we arrived we were told we were late for our reservation. We did not know that we had a reservation. Then we had to wait outside or in the car because there was no room inside to wait. This took about 45 minutes while people kept entering and getting seated. It took a long time before we could order. They were obviously understaffed. My wife asked for the Delmonico steak rare. The waitress said they could do it medium rare. When the steak finally arrived it was well done and very thin, so we sent it back. We had seen a video depicting the Delmonico at this restaurant cooked perfectly rare and thick. The waitress said the Delmonico in the video was from the main menu, not the early bird, which is what we ordered from. The waitress suggested the broiled snapper. My wife ordered it, only to be told ten minutes later that they ran out of it. So my wife had no dinner.

Janine G.

Yelp
1. Nicest person handled reservation. 2. Warmest welcome upon entering restaurant. 3. Excellent server from start to finish. 4. The meal was delicious! It's a winner. We will be back!

Frank P.

Yelp
Food was awful Tasteless Service was bad Don't go Felt like we were eating yesterdays warmed up food

Yelp
Had a very nice meal the other night. I had the Surf and Turf, steak cut like butter and was delicious cooked to perfection and the Lobster Tail was the largest I ever saw with an order like that, GREAT. The other dinner was Pecan crusted Rainbow trout, also very good Casual Atmosphere Staff was very friendly and attentive,

Ros W.

Yelp
This has to do with takeout quality. As a neighborhood restaurant, it's always been serviceable for occasional indoor dining. As such, a personable, efficient waitress handles 8 tables while manager chows down watermelon unavailable to diner as dessert. Manager makes no attempt to help server or busser. Food is plain, unoriginal nor creative, but is solid fare. Last night we did takeout. It was catastrophic: unidentifiable tiny fish in an unknown coating floating in an amorphous yellow liquid. A small baked sweet potato was too charred to eat. Missing was bread, veggies were invisible. We were thankful that the disposal accepted this because we couldn't.

Barbara Kramer K.

Yelp
Food always excellent. Gianna excellent server. We sit outside for health reasons so ambiance doesn't enter into it. We come at least 2x a month

Bob G.

Yelp
This place had been around for ever. With the new management it's even better. Fresh Seafood. We had the snapper and seabass. Delicious. Very cozy decor! The waitress was excellent.

Travis D.

Yelp
Food is incredible! Staff is friendly! Ask for Gianna she is a great server! Some of the best seafood around.

jimmy h.

Yelp
This was the first time trying this restaurant out .10/10 experience, From the moment I walked in I was seated by a great staff and most definitely served by the most friendliest and fantastic server Gianna thank you for your excellent service and thank you for being kind .

Pamela D.

Yelp
I love this place! The owners are friendly and the wait staff is great. Every dish I've tried has been outstanding. Can't wait to try even more. Such a cute restaurant!

Louis G.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, the entire experience was terrific. As people who are very fussy about seafood and service, we felt it was great. Will definitely go again next time we are in Boynton Beach. The restaurant itself is homey and the staff friendly......

Yelp
Service was absolutely horrible, stood outside for 15 min as employees walked by us and totally ignored us. Party of four, Son had to go inside and ask if they had a host? Finally got a table and it took over a hour for our food to come out, the waitresses said it's coming 3 times to us. Nothing a couple came in after us & another party ate & left we still didn't have our food!!! Never coming back and spreading the word to my neighbors. They tried to make up by giving up cake after dinner. I dropped 200 dollars for my Sons Birthday. Worst Birthday ever! The food was just ok...DO BETTER or close your doors.

Hannah D.

Yelp
I saw this place on instagram and decided to check it out last night. I ordered the sautéed soft shell crabs and they were delicious! The service was great! Highly recommend you give it a try!!

Achilles P.

Yelp
What is spectacular find when I walked into the restaurant I thought I may be in Key West. There is small cozy intimate setting the menu had everything from fresh fish calamari to market price lobster clams, oregano, etc. it was our anniversary so I ordered zuppa Depeche. My mother-in-law got a pound and a half fresh lobster. My wife got clams And my father-in-law had fried Diablo muscles half lobster and scallops. The waitress could have not been nicer. She was delightful smart on her feet. This is a hidden gem to take someone for that special evening. I recommended highly and you will love it. Also enjoy bon appétit.
google avatar

Heidi S.

Yelp
We have been doing take out 3 lb lobsters for a year or 2 for my birthday and our anniversary. Always delicious as you can see by my prior reviews. Not this time! We got 2 Overcooked 3lb lobsters. Double cole slaw instead of some rice as requested. The NE clam chowder was not up to their usual standards and it went into the garbage, they also charge extra for clam chowder . We called to complain and they said "they would take care of us next time" I don't even know what that means. I sent a message to someone who may be a boss or owner and he made me feel like I did wrong LOL He states they don't recommend lobster takeout because they dont travel well and won't allow it anymore. Ours were delicious every time till this last time.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. We came here last month for my birthday because I wanted lobster and after scrupulously evaluating my options based on all the Yelp reviews, I decided this was exactly my speed. I love how it's super low key, and keeping in line with my typical reviews, I appreciate the old fashioned feel of the atmosphere. Reminds me of a restaurant from the Twentieth century. I made a reservation, though it being a summer weeknight, it really wasn't necessary. Though, I did oddly see one prime table with a reserved sign on it, it was not for us and instead we were seated across from an incredibly loud party of 4, who punctuated their loud conversation with smoke breaks and booze. So I wasn't a fan of not being able to hear my family as we celebrated my birthday and were subjected to cigarette stink. That's my sole complaint. But the staff were amazingly friendly and wonderful. The waitresses were SO NICE! My lobster was gigantic! Our super sweet waitress later told me she thought I was so nice, she told them to make sure they picked me a good one . And it was. And then when they brought dessert out, some other patrons chimed in (with really great singing voices) to sing happy birthday! All in all, I had a really, really enjoyable birthday here and would definitely come back. The atmosphere is great, the food is great (we had lobsters and prime rib and everyone was happy) and the staff are great! It is by no means an inexpensive place, but if you're looking to go somewhere low key where you're not surrounded by people looking to be seen, then this is the place for you.

Yelp
Everything was good except the seafood. Had the Sole Francaise and it was like a piece of rubber coated in a soggy "shell" plus several bones. Waitstaff said it was "egg washed". My husband had a swordfish filet that was less than a half-inch thick; not my idea of a nice piece of swordfish. Waitress was very pleasant. Sorry to say but I won't be back nor recommend.

Andrew S.

Yelp
best seafood restaurant around! i had the prime rib and lobster tail! melts in your mouth!

Yelp
This is an incredible place to celebrate a special occasion or just plain go out to eat. Ironically there are only a few seafood restaurants in South Florida relative to the fact that ocean surrounds us. This is definitely a place to try. They have so many varied seafood as well as steaks for those of you who are land-lovers. The atmosphere is perfect and the hospitality of the owners is second to none. Social distancing is followed and for those of you that are still fearful of dining out, there is outside seating complete with heaters for those cool winter evenings. We ordered several dishes and shared so that we could get a taste of several items on the menu. We had a four pound lobster which the owner, Liz, cut up for us. We also had the grilled seafood combo which included scallops, shrimp, crab cake and salmon. I get an upset stomach with too much butter, but this was just right. I like my seafood with lemon and Liz brought me a whole bowl full of fresh lemons! Next we had shrimp with linguini . That was also delicious. The portion was so big that we took it home and were still eating it after three days! There is ample parking including handicapped spaces right out front. I highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere is homey and appropriate for a seafood restaurant with an ocean theme. The music also helped set the tone for a restful evening out.

Yelp
Second time here. Better than than first. Felt booth across from us was too close when one of the men kept coughing Lobster was a good surprise on their specials for the day. Good size and meaty, not over cooked. Service was polite and attentive. Enjoyed their diningroom, out of the heat.

Yelp
Me and my family of 4 including me were going to get dinner for my father's birthday. When we entered red lobster, a lady complained that she had already waited 45 minutes for her food and stated that she was going to leave. That completely drove us away from dining in so my dad found this place in yelp and the reviews were decent so we gave it a try...That was a big mistake. When we walked up there was an empty podium and multiple employees walked past us and no service. My dad had to walk in the store and request to be seated. Anyways walking in it is a semi-tight restaurant and not too noisy with sweet elderly couples and party's. When we were seated we received our drinks and it was good...(so far) We order a fried calamari for our appetizer and it took a bit. But when revived it was on the small side. I ordered 2 crab cakes, fish soup, super salad with a side of fries. My grandmother ordered stuffed shrimp and some other stuff. And my grandfather ordered clam chowder. Just to let you know the food took 1h and 15 minutes to arrive to our table!!! That is outrageous...For the food review, keeping it on the most respectful side the fish soup was disgusting but might only be for certain people. The crab cakes were a bit on the dark side but it's alright. The so called "scrod" was so mushy it wasn't even funny, the scallops were amazing and the stuffed shrimp along with the clam chowder was good. Even though majority of the food was good it did not make up for the amount of time we had to wait for it. I promise we are not impatient but who wants to wait an hour and 15 for food?!?! Our hostess did make up for it with bringing us cake but still the wait was crazy. I don't think we will be back. Hopefully if you ever go this doesn't happen to you
