Spicer Mansion

"For travelers ever in search of “authentic” food, the fussy multi-course meal can feel like luxury captivity. But at the newly opened Spicer Mansion in Mystic, Connecticut, the six-course dinner (the menu changes nightly, but a recent one included oysters topped with a subtle poblano mignonette and a passion fruit granita, melt-in-your-mouth-delicate lobster ravioli with favas, and Moroccan-spiced lamb) is an exception to the self-indulgent “chef-y meal” rule. Like the eight-room inn itself—a meticulously restored nineteenth-century mansion rescued from a Victorian-time-capsule fate thanks to its relaxed gray, white, and blue upholstery scheme—the meal was haute yet homey, eventful yet intimate, and certainly worthy of a pilgrimage. (It’s just three hours from New York and two hours from Boston.) Bonus: You can stumble up the stairs and under a big white fluffy duvet just moments after your final wine pairing."

I cannot say enough about this lovely property. The property is utter perfection…this was a rehab done right. Every room is beautifully detailed and wonderfully comfortable. Our room, The Ocean Pearl, is painted and decorated in soothing blues. The bed is incredibly comfortable. The spacious bathroom has a large shower and plenty of room for toiletries. The staff-every person- is so welcoming. There are complementary snacks and drinks available all day. The breakfast is lovely and the coffee good. Bonus for us was our invite to the staff party. We were able to meet both the owner, Sonny, and manager, Nancy. Perhaps the reason the staff is so terrific is that Sonny and Nancy genuinely care about their employees. Lastly, the location is perfect; it’s a short walk to the downtown area. I highly recommend this inn should you be traveling to Mystic.

Stayed here for a weekend in Mystic and the Captain’s Mansion exceeded all my expectations! The staff are incredibly friendly and very accommodating. The rooms are spacious and luxurious with high ceilings, the property overall is immaculate and has so much beauty and character. There are also great amenities such as breakfast, coffee, a wine dispenser and beverage/snack bar. The short walk to downtown made the location unbeatable. Would absolutely stay here again!

I stayed at the Captain's Mansion with my girlfriend over the Valentine's day weekend. The Building itself is amazing and exudes a sense of history that is hard to find nowadays. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly host who gave us a quick history tour of the mansion and then showed us to our room. We stayed in the Bascule Bridge suite and I couldn't recommend it more. The room was spacious, the bed was massive and comfortable and the shower/bathroom was spacious and clean. Our room also had a little balcony off of it which was lovely. We were able to enjoy watching the snow from our little balcony which only added to the experience. The hotel offered complimentary water, soda and light snacks which was a nice perk as well. The complimentary breakfast was also nice if you needed to grab a quick bite before heading out to explore Mystic. The best part about Captain's Mansion was the location. It's a quick 2-3 minute walk down to all the shops, bars and restaurants on Main Street yet is still just far enough away from all crazy hustle and bustle of main street. Hotel also offers convenient parking. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay immensely and will definitely be making it an annual tradition.

From the moment my wife and I walked through the door ,my wife and I sensed the Captain's Mansion was special. From the inlaid floor to the paintings and lighting from the ceiling and the greeting from Mary Ellen made us know we had chosen the right place for our vacation. Other guests had said the Captain's Mansion was a step back in time and they were correct. And whether it was Mary Ellen, Nancy or Haley we were made to feel at home. Our room was spacious with a large and extremely comfortable bed and very quiet. And the bathroom was immaculate. As for breakfast the blueberry cake was beyond delicious [I saved some pieces for a snack] along with fresh fruit. My only regret is our time there was too brief but we are already planning when we can return.

Awesome experience, restored Captain’s Mansion in Mystic CT within walking distance of downtown and many shops & restaurants. This property is beautiful and the staff is welcoming. Be sure to enjoy the Widow’s Walk sitting room with 360* views of Mystic. Our room was spotless, with a comfortable bed. The heated tile floor in the bathroom was awesome during our winter visit. Would definitely recommend !

The mansion is very close to the downtown area without the congestion and the noise. We park our car and it doesn't move until we leave. Within the past year, we have stayed in the Ocean Pearl Suite once (gorgeous room) and the last three times in the Captain's Suite. This beauty has a small room tucked away in the back which has floor to ceiling windows. My partner does his work up there (there is wifi) while I walk to town to eat all the fresh oysters the area has to offer. There is a reason why we keep going back. It is beautiful, clean, really quiet, which we both love plus the staff is always so kind. It truly feels like our home away from home.

We booked all 8 rooms here for our wedding last September as a place for our families to be together during our wedding weekend, and it was so much fun! The house and grounds are stunning and beautifully restored, and Nancy and others were wonderful at facilitating things like lunch while getting ready the day of the wedding, or snacks the Friday before. There are certain rules in the house to protect well-preserved elements like the floors, but they are all reasonable and have easy alternatives (for example, we couldn't do hair and makeup in the parlor in case of makeup/hair product spills, but we could in the sitting room of the Captain's Suite). They were also very accommodating in letting us store a bunch of welcome bags on site a couple of days before the wedding weekend. Most importantly, it was so special being able to gather with family in the dining room or on the patio throughout the weekend, and truly made the weekend that much more memorable.

Snuck away from Central Mass for just an overnight stay and I’m so glad we chose Captain’s Mansion! You literally step back in time when you walk through the doors! Beautifully preserved and tastefully updated all in one! We were greeted by Mary Ellen who was super friendly and warm and gave us a quick tour and some history of the mansion. We stayed in the Ocean Pearl Suite and it was beautifully and tastefully appointed and clean. The walk-in shower was massive and luxurious and the king sized mattress was so comfortable! The continental breakfast was thoughtful, with several choices of baked goods, cheeses, hard boiled eggs, yogurt with fruit and granola and a selection of coffee, teas and juices. Upon checkout, we met Nancy, another friendly staff member. Everyone seems to take pride in what they do and we left feeling pampered and refreshed. Can’t wait to visit again!
