"Captain’s Tavern is a South Miami spot that’s been around since the ’70s. They have a full service restaurant that’s endearingly old school, with lots of dark wood and red tablecloths, and they serve all kinds of seafood dishes - everything from sushi to fried oysters to seafood risotto. Next door to the restaurant, though, is their seafood market, where you can find an equally impressive amount of shellfish, lobster, and pretty much anything else that swims in the Atlantic Ocean and is legal to eat." - ryan pfeffer

This place offers the best fresh fish in town. If you enjoy Key Lime Pie, you'll likely become a regular customer. The staff is always friendly and eager to help. They have some takeout options, though I haven't tried them yet. The location is convenient, and there is a small parking lot available. Every time I visit, I notice customers making purchases, which is a great sign.

Google
A Kendall seafood restaurant institution. Good service. Delicious food. Descent prices. Decor a bit outdated but it felt really cool to feel eating in a 1970's atmosphere.

Jorge “Jazz” Azze

Google
Fresh seafood, great prices, and most importantly a friendly and thoughtful staff

It is extremely disappointing after being a patron of this place for very long time to order a dish coming out wrongly cooked ( understand it could happen..) but taken back without even offering to make it right or taking the time to talk and suggest anything else. Basically I shared my plate with my wife so she could have something to eat. Busy environment as I knew very well BUT you must slow down and pause the speeding around tables to take care of clients in particular when they are not served the food they ordered..every place can have a bad night, even the most successful one like in this case. Sadly it occurred to me and my party.

Google
Freshest and the best quality of seafood products. I recommend trying the Bakkafrost Faroe Salmon 😋

Stopped in for oysters and was assisted by Ray. He was very knowledgeable, attentive and kind. The oysters were delicious! They go for about $4 each which is a bit on the pricier side, but worth it if Ray's there. I'll definitely be back for more oysters and seafood.

Google
My go-to place for stone crabs!! Usually only pickup for special occasions and this is the place! Worth the timely round trip. Staff is friendly and food is always fresh.

Google
Second time we bought rotten fish here… grouper. First time it was yellowtail. Sadly a hit or miss.

Yelp
Outstanding quality! The place to go for the freshest, cleanest seafood in Miami. They add ice to your bag if requested because we live where Satan releases gas ;) Service is impeccable. I'm hooked on their made in house salmon burgers. A million thanks for a job well done and keep it up!

Stephanie Michelle P.

Yelp
My go-to place for stone crabs!! Usually only pickup for special occasions and this is the place! Worth the timely round trip. Staff is friendly and food is always fresh.

Yelp
The best. Period. Not your new gimmicky crab in a bag, or your millennial fusion ceviche crudo mumbo jumbo. Old school first class fish house. Been there foooorever! Fresh as f*ck. Whatcha want? branzino, grouper, mahi, snapper, crab, lobster, oysters... Cocktails, serious.. No mumbo jumbo here either. Martinis, Rusty Nail, Daiquiri, Old Fashion, Mai Tai. Used to be really dark inside, lotsa wood, ship planks, nautical vibe. They've brightened up with the fish tanks, new wall sections. Connected to their own fish market, great place for oysters.

J D.

Yelp
My go-to seafood market; the best as far as I'm concerned. Fresh, clean and smooth shopping experience. I find the staff courteous and always willing to help.

Tracie D.

Yelp
Disgustingly old. Dusty, worn down and dark interior. Food all tasted fried. Sushi was good. Oysters Rockefeller were missing the oysters! Coconut shrimp were over fried, stuffed mushrooms were mushy and gross, calamari was rubbery. Didn't stay for dinner in fear of food poisoning. Don't waste your time or money. Don't get mugged in the parking lot!!

Robert M.

Yelp
Love fish so go to the source - I mainly buy the local fish. They actually have banana cake at the checkout that is great.

Banky E.

Yelp
Good food. A little dated but I think that's the charm of it. The service was top notch.

Laura C.

Yelp
I went with a friend to celebrate my Covid vaccination and to take advantage of the lobster special! Our server, Apple, was very attentive and helpful. We had some wine to begin and some rolls with butter. We ordered the lobster, house salad and a baked potato. Everything was outstanding! After dinner, we went to the bar for our dessert drinks! The bartender was really friendly! My friend had the key lime martini and I had the chocolate martini. Both were delicious! I'd definitely recommend this place for dinner!

Yelp
Both service and food was a big disappointment. We have been going every year for our Anniversary and was such a let down. Our drinks were weak with no olives or cherry. The calamari appetizer was unappealing with just nearly with calamari. We ordered the Caribbean 20oz lobster tails and it was mushy and about 10ozs. we asked for a replacement and was told we needed to wait about 10 minutes and was told they were Carribean tails. when the bill came we were charged for Florida lobster tails. We are extremely disappointed that our Anniversary dinner was spoiled. It's a shame because it used to be one of our favor restaurants .

Yelp
I love this seafood market!! The staff here is wonderful. They are extremely patient and helpful. Yesterday (3/14/18) I bought two huge salmon fish heads for $1.99 per pound. They were over 2 lbs each. I think I had over 5 lbs of salmon heads. The guy cleaned and split them in half for me so that they would be easier to cook. This really helped, especially since I had never made salmon heads before but it was a special request from the birthday boy. I also bought a big snapper that they nicely cleaned and cut into 3 pieces for me. I really love this place. Service is excellent!! I also bought a small container of fish spread for $12.99 per lb and a scotch bonnet pepper sauce for $6.99. Everything was delicious when cooked!! Very fresh! They also had sea bass fillets for $29.99 per lb. I want to come here every day on my way home from work!

Joel K.

Yelp
I have been a customer at the Market (and restaurant ) for 30 + years . I have lived and shopped in Dade County for 60 + yrs. In my opinion, it just can't get any better than the "Tavern " mkt. and restaurant. Its family owned and managed ..the quality of the fish etc..is always top notch. Extremely friendly, accommodating, and efficient staff !!

Adrian P.

Yelp
always find the food to be so good here

Roberto S.

Yelp
We went there today and all 4 of us ordered large stone crabs. When the order came, Junior, our waiter, returned 1 order because it looked smaller but brought it back and gave it to me. I showed the manager that mine was a lot smaller but he refused to charge me for the medium. The bill came and since Junior's service was so good, We tipped him 20%. We did not even get a free dessert. The food was good but with so many restaurants in Miami, I don't need to go back to a place with such a poor customer service.

Toni M.

Yelp
The best, the freshest, and the widest variety of seafood in south florida. If you haven't gotten your seafood from here-- you need to make the trip. Great people, great food, and at a great price. 10/10

Dale R.

Yelp
3 fresh fresh Maine lobsters!!!!!! DELICIOUS.... They partially steamed and split them for me so I could finished them in the grill. WOW. GREAT

Lori R.

Yelp
Best seafood in town! Would recommend if you are looking for fresh seafood at a reasonable cost.

Alex V.

Yelp
We have been coming here forever. Awesome wine list and the best seafood in town. The definition of a staple restaurant. Don't forget the seafood market on the back.

J.C R.

Yelp
Wow what great quality fish! I went in to get things for my seafood paella and the staff was veey helpful. I got Chilean seabass, mussels, clams, squid and bay scallops. Very reasonably priced. Will definitely come back.

Claudia J.

Yelp
Monk fish, stone crabs, oysters, other types of fish. When it's stone crab season, crabs arrive daily!! how fresh is that??!! their products are pretty fresh all around! Busy days are around the Holidays, so if you are planning on making a special meal with fresh seafood, call ahead and make your order! Yes they are expensive as other yelpers have mentioned, but I think it is so worth it!! It's fresh! George & Sandy are super friendly!!

Jules V.

Yelp
I am so glad we found this place. They been there for 50 years. The service was great and the food is like upscale home cooked seafood. Portions are great. New England clam chowder was delish. The coconut shrimp was divine. I had the scallop risotto which was creamy and the veggies were crisp. My husband had the grouper with polenta. All around 5 stars!!!

William B.

Yelp
Great seafood restaurant! Awesome crab cakes and conch fritters. Lobster Newburgh is amazing.

Natalia F.

Yelp
Food was fantástic!!! Brandi no with caper butter sauce, seafood risotto and save room for the bread pudding ask for Junior he provided us with superb service and he was patient and knowledgeable

Nurys I.

Yelp
Can't speak to the quality of the food - this is strictly customer service oriented review. I live in Weston and called to inquire about whether they had stone crabs left. The woman that answered the phone said not many but she couldn't tell me exactly how many were left. We're a family of 3 and I live far away so I asked if she could get someone else to tell me how many they had before I trekked out there. She said they were in the back and could not tell me. This is unbelievable to me!!

Alexis P.

Yelp
TALK ABOUT FRESH FISH! I love getting all my fish from here. Always the freshest and they are always so helpful! Raymond is the best!

Stephen G.

Yelp
Twice now...burned twice by Captain's Tavern. About a month ago we bought $80 worth of stone crabs only to get them home to find out they were rotten! We called and were given attitude by both people we talked to, the second being the owner who said "come back in and we will make it up to you." No offer of a credit, etc. Fast forward to today and I buy 1.5lbs of colossal shrimp only to bring them home and yup...ROTTEN. They didn't smell that bad in the bag but damn...cooked them and it was obvious from the first bite. The place smells like what I would imagine the rotting carcass of a tuna might smell like. I should have known better. The women that work the register are rude and don't even look at you when they check you out. Never again Captain's Tavern....never again.

Elie H.

Yelp
For fresh seafood, whether it's fish or shellfish, they have the best and freshest selection, and probably the best prices. My wife only makes ceviche with their fish. They have a very friendly Jamaican lady at the register and their service is excellent.

Greg S.

Yelp
Avoid this place. The stench will hit you in the face as soon as you open the front doors. Not surprisingly, I got sick as a dog after eating the snapper. My bad. I should have trusted my nose. I'm not sure about the restaurant, but I've got to believe its the same fish as the market.

Beth T.

Yelp
It's been many many years since I'd eaten at Captains Tavern. Maybe 30. Definitely too many. But I moved away. So I'm in Pinecrest looking for seafood. There are lots of options but here was a place I'd been to as a child growing up in Pinecrest and later as an adult and it was still here! With great reviews! Now I know why. Ok so the place is old. Not much has changed there in the past 50 years or so...not a problem. The COVID restrictions are in place and comforting. Our server was Madison. Give the girl a raise! We started with oysters Rockefeller. Yum. I found out you can specify the type oyster you want which I will do in the future. Then I had grouper Oscar. The grouper was fresh having just come in that day. Now I'm a Miami girl. And a seafood person. But this was seriously the best fish I've ever eaten. What a statement, right! But true. My husband has lobster Newburg. He stopped talking after the first bite. Run. Don't walk. Tuesday is bogo lobster. Ask for Madison. She's adorable.

Daisy L.

Yelp
I've been dinning at Captain's Tavern restaurant for many years and purchasing from their seafood market. Today on New Year's Eve I stood in a 50 minute line to purchase stone crabs and they were the absolute worse. Shame on you for serving old frozen stone crabs. The only reason I give this a two star is because the employees were friendly considering the amount of people they served.

Nautical Traveler S.

Yelp
Exceptional selection and service. Stone crabs always fresh. Helpful staff can answer any questions

Pepsi T.

Yelp
Walk in & it smells like rotten fish. I should have walked out at that point. I bought 3 lbs of stone crabs; I was planning a nice dinner. It didn't happen. They were to worst quality stone crabs; they were dried out & without flavor. I also bought their stone crab sauce. Definitely another mistake. It's the worst recipe. Tasted like a science project gone bad. Next time you walk in & take a whiff of the spoiled fish remember this review. Walk out & go somewhere where they sell fresh products. They get one star because Yelp requires it.

Selene B.

Yelp
Ambience was really nice. Portions were small but the food was good. Overall it's a bit pricey for the size of the portions.

Ralph P.

Yelp
This review is for the market, not the restaurant (Restaurant is great btw). This is one of Miami's institutions. The restaurant and market have been around for as long as I can remember. I walked into the market Saturday afternoon and the smell (good smell, not bad) brought me back to being a kid going to Billy's Seafood in Miami Springs, LOL. Anyways, they had lot's of local and imported fish. All very fresh. if you ever in need a good fish market, come to here to your fish and seafood needs!!!!!

Wilson L.

Yelp
Best seafood market in Miami. Being a fisherman I can tell fresh fish. Great stone crabs, helpful pleasant staff. May cost a bit more than Publix, etc., but the selection, quality is there. Where I go for fresh fish when I'm not DIY in the ocean.

Ana T.

Yelp
They said they were open, but were closed. We had an urge for our favorite restaurant but it was closed when the door said they were open for 2 hours.

Chris C.

Yelp
The only reason they aren't getting 5 stars is that they are a bit expensive. That being said, when I am looking for fresh fish, shrimp, stone crab this is where I go. As many of you know stone crab season opened last Thursday, Friday afternoon I was here buying them for a family dinner. Like any seafood the key to great taste is freshness, and these were as good as any stone crab claws as I ever had. P.S. The Captain also sells awesome stuffed mushrooms.

Doug B.

Yelp
Fresh! Beautiful fish. Must try smoked fish dip and smoked salmon, fresh salmon, seabass, scallops

Monica S.

Yelp
If you're the kind of person who cares about consuming or knowing about "the best of everything," take note: Captain's Tavern is the most well respected seafood market in South Florida. Any lover of fresh seafood, emphasis on "fresh," simply can't find better quality seafood than at Captain's. These wildcats carry the widest selection of recently caught tail. You can buy Branzino, a Mediterranean seabass that's hard to come in these parts (as they import it directly from the source), Red Snapper, Hog Snapper, all kinds of shellfish... This isn't one of those if-you-go-and-get-lucky kinda spots either. They consistently carry a huge and fresh variety. Play Mrs. Doubtfire and impress guests with butter-garlic marinaded butterfly shrimp. Just pop those crustaceans in the oven and your guests will think you're a master chef. Or if you just want to pick something up last minute, the spreadable fish salad (for bread) is a no-fail party or personal treat. Greatest selection of fresh oysters, stone crabs and other goods, you just can't go wrong, yo.

Ranzo T.

Yelp
IT IS, WHAT IT IS! I could give it a rating and stop right there, but then it wouldn't be a review. If you've read the other reviews you've pretty much got the gist of it. Good food with a mob like, Faustian atmosphere. 'Great for kids, including grandpa and infants. Lobster night is the overall best in Florida. Families love it. Old timers flock to the place. 'Seafood is fresh. One thing I can add that no one else has said. The husband half of the couple I came with gave me some interesting informations out the place. While his wife chased their runaway two-and-a-half year old around nearby tables this guy said that "back in the day" he was a commercial fisherman. Back then he said this restaurant bought directly from him and other local fisherman and are known to be extremely fussy and selective. That's why he frequents the place today and was willing to wait in line for a table. This ain't Truluck's. But then you wouldn't spend the money to take your kids and grandma to Truluck's for seafood would you? This is a terrific restaurant for folks who want a great family night out in Florida.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Chris beat me too it and said it all. The seafood is fresh. The variety is good. The few ready made things, like the stuffed mushrooms, are great. And there is no comparing them to Golden Rule. I have been disappointed by Golden Rule, never by the Captain.

Naty K.

Yelp
Great, fresh seafood, good service though it can get crowded, like during NYE. My parents have been coming for over 10 years and know all the staff. I wouldn't say it is the only place in Miami for seafood though, Captain Jim's, another long-time Miami institution, is also great, very fresh (I have been told they sell to Joe's, and then Joe's turns around, marks up the prices, and brings it to you) and it is a LOT cheaper, just a bit far for many to warrant such a commute. For those in the Pinecrest area though, Captain's Tavern is great, and this is where the Captain's Tavern restaurant's seafood hails from, in case you did not know.

Philip B.

Yelp
Went here for the first time yesterday and my oh my is my head still spinning at the quality and freshness of the fish! I ended up getting some Grouper and cooking it at home last night, but they had so much to choose from that I literally took about 10 minutes just looking at it all and trying to figure out what in the world I was going to choose. The staff was more than helpful and were very accommodating to my requests. I will definitely be back in the future! The only thing I kept asking myself is "why haven't I gone sooner?" Do yourself a favor and get down there people! Just don't buy all my Grouper!

Alex D.

Yelp
We always check out their offerings when we are in town - honestly, we've never been disappointed with the quality or the selection at this place! The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and are ready to give you really good advice on "the catch" if you are undecided. Last time we were there, I needed oysters to go with some pulled pork shoulder, and they let me taste several kinds - we finally settled on the WiAnno oysters, which were nothing short of incredible! They were fresh and packed expertly to preserve their freshness after each had been "popped" so I could shuck them easily at home. Several people have commented that they are a bit pricey, but with quality this good, I am more than happy to pay extra so that I can have the best. We will definitely be back!

Jon A.

Yelp
We purchased dry main scallops (U10's, actually 8's) and they were fresh and superb- the scallops should smell like fresh fruit or a pear which they did. The sushi grade tuna was also excellent.

Claudia S.

Yelp
The worst stone crabs I have ever had. Were they fresh???? The sauce was mustard alright. Where's the cream and Worcester ? I will never buy stone crabs from here again especially when there's other better fresher places for the same price.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Wow...that's all I can say. My mom went here a few weeks ago to pick up some mussels and clams for a "Brussels" theme night. Nothing official, really, we just wanted to remember our trip to Brussels with mussels and frites. So off she went. The mussels were great and the clams were amazing! Yesterday my mom went back to get tons of clams and some king crab legs for my husband's birthday dinner tonight. She also asked about the banana cream pie--I read about it on Yelp. They weren't going to have any available at the restaurant so she asked if she could purchase an entire pie from the market. The cook had already gone home and they didn't plan to make one today...but after seeing all the seafood my mom was buying and knowing it was for a special occasion, they contacted the cook and asked if she could make an exception and bake one for us. Luckily for us, the wonderful woman who bakes these phenomenal pies said she would make one for us. The pie looked delicious when I picked it up and must have weighed at least 10 pounds. I'm not kidding. After tasting it, we could see why the banana cream pie gets such great reviews. It was delicious. So many bananas, just the right amount of pudding, and real, thick, yummy whipped cream. WOW! Worth it. If you go to Captain's Tavern or the market, you know you're going to get delicious seafood...but make sure you leave room for the banana cream pie. Thank you!

Carol D.

Yelp
Excellent!! fresh fresh fresh never a bad experience. It's my go to when I want seafood. The service is good too

Ashley H.

Yelp
We went here to pick up stone crab claws for New Years Eve, and my were they delicious! Of course, we waited for about 30-45 minutes in line to pick them up (it was a holiday after all), but we were okay with that. Everyone who worked behind the counter was polite and helpful and worked to make our visit as efficient as possible. We enjoyed the crab claws that night with delicious mustard sauce, and they were fresh and absolutely perfect. Definitely worth it!
