10 of Chicago’s Best Bowls of Chili, Mapped | Eater Chicago

"Chili and a sandwich are a top tier pairing and with three locations around Chicagoland, Capt’n Nemo’s is more than willing to provide a solid meal. The turkey option is among the best of its kind while other choices include beef and vegetarian chilis. Customers who want to stock up for a cold, wintry day can purchase frozen quarts to take home." - Jeffy Mai

Google
Best sandwich I ever had! My friends didn’t get a full sandwich, only half. They had to go back and get another 6 inch because it was that good.

Google
Having lived in the Chicago area for over 30 years, this was my first visit to Nemo's. The meat is piled on really great bread. We'll be back for a sure.

Google
Captn Nemo’s is amazing. I appreciate the staffs and managers kindness to me even though I have autism and their food is amazing and really good. Owner Steve is very nice. The restaurant is in good condition. Amazing subs. Must come back. 10/10.

Google
Boom goes the dynamite! I've lived here for 15 years and never tried this place. My mistake. I'll come back again and again. I got 1/2 sub for a great price and it was one of the best subs I've ever had. Come here for lunch, door dash it or get your party catered, it's great.

After 55 years coming back to Chicago, I was sad to find that Rogers Park and the Ashland locations were closed but found that Winnetka was open. What a joy we had and the taste hasn’t changed in 55 years. The food was still fresh. Delicious. I was looking for Stephan, but he was nowhere to be found. Mrs. Nemo, you got the goods mam. Stephen, I was looking for you I haven’t seen you since before I open Frankie Jay’s on Broadway.

Google
These are the best sub sandwiches on Earth. I've been going to capt. NEMOS fir 50 years. The fresh ingredients and mixture are perfect

Google
Capt'n Nemos has been a staple in the area for years. Small sandwich shop with some charm. I always pick up the High Flyer. It's simply delicious!

Google
Captain Nemo’s opened in Chicago in 1973. This is the last and only location. Support this small business. Amazing Sub sandwiches. Get it toasted. My favorite is the South Sea Sub. Just tried the New - Balboa Sub also amazing. Took an extra one to go. Caters to lunch closes at 6:00. Highly recommended. Try it. Small Deli style place. You can sit and eat. Nothing fancy decorated with stuff from the old Ashland Location. Chicago history. A hidden golden Gem.

Yelp
Been a customer since they opened in the 70s. I think they have the best subs around. Usually get the Americanne sub but like all the others I've tried.
google avatar

Rico B.

Yelp
Great sub Sammy.. try the Balboa or the conqueror... not conducive for dine in but great for takeout
google avatar

Juan A.

Yelp
They always make a great sandwich, fresh and very tasty, the crew there was fast and friendly.

And 8.

Yelp
Been having this since I was a little girl they used to have a spot up north near the lake really good sandwiches
google avatar

Norman M.

Yelp
Best ham sub I've had since Hero's closed down across from Lane Tech High. All of the add ons were fresh: lettuce, onions, tomatoes and Giardinera. The ham was fresh n tasty. This is now my go to place for a fresh sub! Gets my highest rating.

Yelp
Everything you remember in the Rodgers park location and more. Pro tip: Balboa w/everything.....
google avatar

Debbie W.

Yelp
Great quality meats and. cheese come together in delicious sandwiches. We have been loyal customers for 40+ years. Soups are always great. I always enjoy the Seafarer (tuna) and the Northern Italian. The split pea is my favorite soup.

Gavin M.

Yelp
Generally good food. Closed 15 minutes early for no reason today. Glad I didn't get a ticket getting her in time.
google avatar

Luke S.

Yelp
So good! Balboa and The American are the two that you can't miss here. Also their tuna is one of a kind and has sliced hard boiled eggs. So solid and a staple for decades.

Yelp
How sad is it there's only one Nemo's location left and it's not even in Chicago? I used to go to the one on Ashland until it closed rather suddenly a few years ago. Now even the original one in Rogers Park closed because a bureaucrat at city Hall was refusing to renew their food service license until they paid some old fine left over from the Ashland location (seemingly they closed it to resolve whatever the issue was, well the city logged it as a fine anyway and then held their RP location hostage for it). So the owner closed that one too, and now Nemo's is only in this one last spot in the North Shore suburbs. Anyway, you get quality sandwiches at Nemo's. I like how ordering a whole sandwich actually gets you two individually wrapped halves. It's easier to eat one and take the other home for later. I like that they have two different liverwurst sandwiches here. They also have a special sub called a Balboa that was created by some kids in a home ec class at New Trier. It's a really good sub! Apart from that I like the seafarer, which is a tuna sub, and the Northern Italian, which is various Italian deli meats and has olives on it. They have soups here including some frozen in a case you can take home. The service at this location was fast and friendly. I don't find myself in this area very often but when I do, I'll stop in for a sub! Maybe I'll have to visit the Ferrari dealer up the road sometime...
google avatar

Jennie M.

Yelp
Been a while since we were here and it was just as good as always. I got the highflyer and I'm telling you having radishes and hard boiled eggs and your sandwich makes all the difference.

Shane M.

Yelp
Overhyped but the sandwiches are pretty good here. Just a basic sandwich spot. Sucks that they don't really do a lot of delivery app options. I'm not driving over to Winnetka for sub sandwiches 7/10

Yelp
Great sandwich and soup. Just like I remember. I asked for it toasted. The soup was fresh and wonderful. I wish it were closer to my home.

Yelp
I have been coming to Nemo's my entire life and it has never disappointed. In fact the only disappointment ever felt was when first the Ashland and then the Clark location closed down. Winnetka is the last Nemo standing! I will be crushed if it goes too. Their subs are just perfect and the soup is the best there is. My usual order is either a half turkey breast or a spectacular with a cup of split pea. I've literally eaten this hundreds of times and it's always been delicious. And that meal is still under $10! Nothing is under $10 anymore. Please keep serving me deliciousness for 40 more years!

Laura H.

Yelp
It's still one of my favorite sandwiche joints. I just wish they would bring back the variety of soups they used to serve.
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
I wasn't a fan initially, but this place has certainly grown on me. Their seafarer is still a solid choice (I'm not a fan of their Mexicanne sandwich), but their turkey chili has since blown me away since my last review. I've always tried the split pea, because that's what has been recommended to me, and while it's good, it's nothing mindblowing. But the turkey chili. That's on a whole other level - so good!! So if you're heading in for some solid sandwich choices, don't forget to pick yourself up some chili!

Yelp
Long time patron of the Rogers Park location now having to resort to thins long drive. Still no bbq roll & still passing. No thanks & good luck down the road to this legendary name which is not worthy anymore.

Don R.

Yelp
I d been coming to Captain Nemo's since they opened up in Rodgers park on Clark st, in 1971 best subs and soup around Lou did it right, go to the Winnetka location as the city of Chicago screwed them over so he closed the Clark st location

Chris C.

Yelp
The last of the Nemo's locations. Over the years I have enjoyed all 3 locations. My wife's family have been regulars for years. The sandwiches themselves are just right, then you get the wall art which just gives it a pleasant and fun vibe. Also, I was at a conference one time that used them for catering and that was a great lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a fast-food sandwich shop with a variety of sub and soup options. It was a nice change - in comparison to my regular potbelly or jimmy johns trips. I ordered the vegetarian Mexicana and I thought it was a very tasty sandwich. The staff there is very nice. I thought it was straight forward and nice experience.

Yelp
OK, Capt'n Nemo's is one of my FAVORITE sandwich places of all time. I was recently pregnant and stayed away because of not being allowed to consume uncooked deli meats. As soon as I had my baby, this had to be one of the first stops after returning home! Unfortunately, I have always frequented the location in the city on Ashland. I heard that location closed, so I decided to try this one and I was in the area. I had been waiting soooo long to get my hands on the Mexicanne sandwich! For those who don't know, this sandwich can be served hot or cold and consists of turkey, refried bean paste, salsa, guacamole, giardinera, and LTO. Soooooo good! I ordered this along with my favorite soup there, split pea. And the whole meal was so disappointing. The sandwich was so skimpy and barely had any toppings! And the split pea soup was NOT like what is served in the city. I actually tossed it. Capt'n Nemo's is known for their unique sandwiches. Besides the Mexicanne, the South Sea is really good. And their turkey chili is a must try as well. BUT...I do not know how they taste at this location. I THINK they have a Rogers Park location....I will have to try that one, if my memory serves me right.

Yelp
Love ordering from here. Classic sandwich shop with delicious variety of hot and cold sandwiches. The decor is old fashioned but I mainly get takeout only. The employees are always polite and the food is made promptly. Great for a high quality sub sandwich.
google avatar

Yelp
First time visiting. Aways passed by. Grabbed a sandwich for my son in between sports events. Sandwich was reasonably priced and portions were bigger than I expected. Will come back for sure next time now that I know.

Tony T.

Yelp
Food was a salty mess This place is for drunk people or kids Really bad / don't recommend. Honestly caloric intake per sandwich is probably 2,000+ This place is a relic from old Chicago era and I'm not surprised at all this is the last location left
google avatar

Jack S.

Yelp
Wasn't a big fan of my Captain's Salad, and all the indoor dining was closed, but the employee who made it was very nice. I'll give 4 stars for the friendly experience. My fault for ordering a salad at a place famously known for sandwiches. If I come back, I'm sure I'll get a half sub. Prices seemed fair.
google avatar

Yelp
I went here based on Yelp reviews and a friend's suggestion. You are greeted right away when you enter this place which I like. The staff are all amazing. The sandwich was one of the best sandwiches that I have ever eaten. I don't remember what I got but it tasted fresh. I shouldn't have gotten the whole thing toasted because I like cold sandwiches. Next time, I won't get it toasted. I just wish that there was more options of sandwiches. I would give it an 9 out of 10.

Yelp
Typical yet unusual in a good way! Typical in the sense that they have a soup and sandwich combo for $8.50... but from there it gets different. No fat, healthy cooking. And the service was fantastic. A Hispanic man allowed me to try the turkey chili and it was delicious. Then the owner Steve comes in and he has a gregarious and fun personality. Immediately he was talking to customers and was the life of the party. He actually said Rodgers Park prices in Winnetka and he was right. The sandwich was great! I ate the ham Reuben and it was great... especially on the bread. The turkey Chilli was FANTASTIC. This is a great value overall. I really like this place. Go here :)
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Good soups and sandwiches. They took Italian beef off of the menu. Asked why, no answer. Soda fountain out of order. Would be nice if they updated interior and put seating back
google avatar

Steve Z.

Yelp
They certainly don't skimp on meat and cheese, which I suppose is why people love them. I wouldn't mind seeing a light option -- the ability to choose less meat and swap in more veggies, such as pickles, tomatoes, or peppers. That option would enable them to continue offering the hearty sandwiches on which they built their reputation but also throw in something for those of us who are past the growing stage. Still, a great place, and next time I'll be sure to make a side salad at home.
google avatar

Omar K.

Yelp
Uncaring and unsanitary establishment. Ordered by phone in advance. When I arrived not a single employee was wearing a mask while preparing my order or even after i walked in, wearing a mask past the sign on their door requiring masks! Needless to say I canceled my order. No thanks for unsanitary conditions like that.
google avatar

Fazil A.

Yelp
The high flyer. 2xs in 2 days. No regrets. Live your life and I'll live mine. Dat bread tho. Nom nom.

Joe M.

Yelp
Visited twice, bread is very stale, like toasted and dried out, but was not toasted, i asked for fresh bread both times. Dirty run down atmosphere. Expensive to. Youll be better off at a chain restaurant.

Abe P.

Yelp
Hands down best classic subs in all of Illinois if not all of America. Thick cut meats, awesome bread, and the best sauce.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and the Turkey sandwich was delicious. There's a special sauce that made it good. Also real Turkey, not processed. Wish you could eat inside because the sandwiches are messy

Debby B.

Yelp
BEST SUBS EVER. Try the "Spectacular" - it'll change your life. Open hours different than what's shown on Yelp. 11-6 M-S, closed Sundays.
google avatar

Candace D.

Yelp
Wanted to like it as I love a good sub, but this is just not my cup of tea. The bread is super crunchy for a cold sub... not toasted or anything. Like when you leave a load of French bread from the grocery out a few days. Had a turkey sub and was just meh.

Maria M.

Yelp
I used to love the seafarer ((tuna) sub at the Capt'n Nemo's on Fullerton in Chicago. I happened to drive by the shop in Wilmette and ordered the same sandwich and there was no comparison. The tuna filling was very skimpy, the bread was over-toasted, and the cheese was Muenster instead of brick (as was the original). These are the areas I would improve to make it a most delicious sandwich.
google avatar

Tom K.

Yelp
Stopped by today as a tribute to the recently deceased founder. Ordered the Spectacular -- liverwurst, bologna, swiss, etc. Subbed pickles for eggs. Toasted bread so much better than Subway's. Best sandwich I've had all year.

Yelp
I started going to Captain Nemo's when I was at New Trier when it opened, and loved it as a student. It had been many years since I had gone and I hoped it would live up to the memory and it did! They still offer you a sample of soup which I was more than happy to accept. The Split Pea Soup was delicious! Another in my group got a full Minestrone and she loved it, said it was more of a vegetable soup but still very good. I studied the menu before I went because I did want to mess up this reunion. I decided to go with The Balboa (the fact it was created by a NT Marketing Class contributed to this) and I was so excited. While I was waiting for my sandwich to toast I chatted with my sandwich maker and he told me he had been with Captain Nemo's since 2000, I learned that the Lakeview location is all take-out and almost all soup, while the Winnetka location is all sandwiches. He then informed me that I was getting the most popular sandwich which I quickly found out why! First off, the sandwich is listed on the counter on a piece of paper, not even on the main menu. The Balboa is Ham, Turkey, Bacon, LTO, Mayo, Balboa Sauce and Captain's Secret Sauce. The Balboa Sauce is spicy flavor with the richness of bacon and the CSS is still so perfect in every way....but messy! I could have done with a 6" but I did the 12" which ended up being lunch the next day. The bread had the right amount of crunch where it was not soft and doughy or hard and crunchy like a Baguette. Captain Nemo's lived up to the memory! Yes, the parking was not ideal but we made it work. The place was clean when I was there and I hope to return soon for another smaller sandwich but try the famous Chili. If you are in the area or need something close to New Trier, give Captain Nemo's a try.

Yelp
Awesome!! Had the Italian Swiss and it was wonderful! About 10 years ago i taught Physics at Northshore Country Day school down the street. Loved it then, loved it today. Read about the oowners death, so sad. But the sammches live on!!! Great sammich
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Capt'n Nemo's makes a good sandwich. Not great, not the best, but good. What I object to is primarily the proportions, not the quality of ingredients. There is too much meat and cheese for this thickness of bread, and not enough vegetables. You need the cool-and-crispies to balance out the warm-and-savories. And most importantly, a bread dense and broad enough to hold it all together. But I still keep them on the list for when I'm in the area and want a sandwich, especially to go. They have most of the usual suspects and some more interesting concoctions on the menu, but you can get them to make pretty much any combination of meats, sauces, and toppings. Surprisingly, this North Shore location has more grit and personality--and less space--than the Lakeview shop. The dudes behind the counter are cool, but inevitably about a third of the customers are dicks.
google avatar

Tamir G.

Yelp
Small and cozy. Very personable service. Really old school. One of three locations. Their house special sauce CSS is great. Had the turkey and cheese hot one... Really good sandwich!!!!! The pea soup is also pretty amazing. They give generous tasting so try it and take some home.

Yelp
I love Captain Nemo's! I usually visit here for a sandwich and their other quality comfort food. Every single time it is a good and awesome experience for me. Captain Nemo's has the best sandwiches in the whole area of Winnetka. Their sandwiches are phenomenal. It is so delicious, tasty, and unique. All of their food on the menu are freshly made, always up-to-date ingredients, and made to perfection. You must try this place if you are here in this area. It will change the way you think about ordinary sandwiches. This place is so huge, they have so many dining spots inside and outside the place, and their location is very easy to find and near. Very interesting place. They have so many great deals like promos, combos, discounts. This place never disappoints! You all must visit this place and you will know what am I saying about how great this place is. Captain Nemo's Winnetka is so great! They absolutely beat out all of the chains around the area. Highly recommend! Especially to all those people who really loves sandwiches, burgers, and other comfort food. Great place to grab a quick bite. Thank you Captain Nemo's for such a wonderful customer service. Also for giving us an awesome and unforgettable experience. Thank you very much to all of your staff who made the experience much better and happy. Thank you and kudos to all of you!

Yelp
I fantasize about these subs they're so good. I can't physically drive past this place without stopping inside for a sandwich. The Mexicanne is out of this world and the Italian and Balboa are pretty great as well. Can't recommend this place more and have yet to find another sub shop in Chicago that compares.
google avatar

Yelp
I have never been able to make it to this place before their super early 7pm closing, until today! 6:30pm. Only because I was already in the area. ...Do people in Winnetka all just eat dinner at like 4pm or something, because the place was completely empty at what I thought would be prime dinner time... Their menu seems like they'd be your average sandwiches - toasted bread, deli meats, toppings, italian beef, etc. But oh man, the captain's sauce is so delicious. Totally takes the whole thing to an newer level. The lightly toasted bread was perfect and so was the meat/cheese/bread/toppings ratio. The liverwurst in the conquerer reminded me a lot of elementary school cafeteria food, but somehow in a good nostalgic way. I definitely scarfed that down way too fast. The half-sandwich, cup of soup, and drink combo is a great deal at $7. They are the only place I know where a whole sandwich is literally just two half-sandwiches and twice the price. So mix and match if you're stuck between two choices! But really, the half is an entire sandwich and perfectly filling on its own, especially along with some soup. The split pea was nice and warm and rustic but tasted only okay. Not gonna complain though since the sandwich more than makes up for it. Can't wait to come here again! Definitely a worthy stop if you're in the area.

Yelp
We found this place on a whim coming home from a weekend trip in Chicago. We definitely were not impressed with the decor, but who judges quality of food on restaurant decor... there were quite a few sandwich choices to choose from. However, we were not delighted to find out there was no discount in choosing a whole sandwich. It was the same price as two halves and that's literally what it was: two halves. Why even put a whole sandwich choice up there if the price is the same and they make two separate sandwiches? The sandwich was pretty tasty and we would come back for a visit. Four stars for the quality of the food, but minus a star for atmosphere and friendliness (or lack thereof). Also, we paid more for a small meal for two people than we would have at a sit down restaurant. Too expensive for a sandwich shop.

Kk P.

Yelp
In my opinion....LOVE the sandwiches.....Seafarer is the best! However, I was in line today for a pickup and there was a 20-something man also waiting without a mask, as required. Neither employee asked him to mask up, so I was pretty uncomfortable. We are still in a pandemic people. Mask up when required so we can all continue come to our favorite places.

Miles F.

Yelp
I LOVE CAPTNEMOS!! This place is an institution. Best sandwiches.I've been coming here since a kid and it still holds up. Make sure to ask for the secret sauce.

Grace S.

Yelp
I was craving a homemade type specialty sandwich so I decided to check Captain Nemo's out. The outside looked very quaint and cozy - perfect place to chill in a non-corporate restaurant environment. I totally enjoyed my experience. All of the food there is excellent!
