Yesterday, I had the privilege of taking my 79-year-old friend—who was also my nanny growing up—to the soup kitchen. It was such a special time together, and the atmosphere was truly humbling.
We had the honor of sitting next to a gentleman named Larry, who reminded me of Fred Sanford’s friend Lamont from the old TV show. He had us laughing and talking about sports. He shared how poorly the Tigers had played the day before, and I told him that could change—and sure enough, the Tigers won yesterday. Hallelujah!
The staff was kind and welcoming, and the manager even gave me a card so I can come back to volunteer. I look forward to bringing my children (ages 12 and 13) so they can see firsthand that no one is ever better than anyone else. I believe it will be an eye-opening and humbling experience for them as well.
We were also blessed with a delicious lunch—thank you for the burritos (or tacos)! The portions were so generous that I couldn’t finish it all. It was truly a treat and a reminder of the goodness in people.
I’m very grateful for this place and the work they’re doing in the community.
