"After attending a gelato university in Bologna, Italy more than a decade ago, co-owner Emiliano Cecchetti opened up this compact gelateria in Berkeley, and quickly became a neighborhood staple. Offering lactose-free and vegan options, the shop shows off flavors with the light, yet creamy texture that only excellent gelato can deliver. Get yourself scoops of Italian classics like chocolate-speckled stracciatella, fior di latte, or gianduia — or try more California-inspired options like white guava, pluot, and pineapple. Be sure to pop in regularly to check out the rotating flavors, which they swap out often." - Lena Park

Delicious gelato at a reasonable price. So many flavors to choose from. It tastes authentic!

Joy Liu

Google
The seasonal blueberry tastes exactly like blueberry. It made me realize I wanted something that tastes a little… less like blueberry? Because otherwise I would just eat blueberries? Impressive nonetheless. The chocolate tastes very earthy

Google
The gelato (all 3 flavors I tried) tasted like similar frozen cream with a tad of sweetness and nothing else - barely any flavor. The cone tasted like crispy paper. This was the worst gelato / ice cream place I’ve ever tried. I’m surprised this establishment has lasted 8 years.

Google
Best ice cream place in town. Has the real Italian gelato structure and the cones are home made. I’ve come back multiple times and it’s always amazing, try it out!

Google
Best gelato or ice cream in the East bay. I go here all the time and started bringing pints home. Great employees too- Karina is hardworking, personable and really efficient during rush times.

Google
Nice gelato 😌🍨 The staff are nice and the place is clean. They don’t have many indoor seats, but it’s fine to just take out anyways Their flavor and menu changes according to the season and they invented new flavor from time to time :) The ingredients are good quality and the gelato tater natural without artificial nor too-sugary taste P.S. their waffle cone is a cup which is cute! 🧇 # Hazelnut Chocolate Waffle Cup

What a lovely place. We were in Berkeley for a casual lunch on Shattuck Ave and walked by this place. It looked so cute and cozy that we had to go in. Plus it said Italian gelato, are you kidding me? You can't simple walk by, pass it and not stop. Very casual and warm atmosphere inside, love the way it's done up. Few seats at a large community table and few tables outside as well. Organic milk and great vegan options too. Few great gelato options, sorbets and coffee with great quality here! I love me some pistachio gelato that is not easy to find but this place nailed it. I opted for the cone which was freshly made, crunchy and delicious. Hubby loved his afogato and we had a great time speaking in Italian to the owners. Well located on a busy street like Shattuck and so close to the BART, makes this place ideal spot for that gelato on a hot day! They also have few table games for entertainment :) Gender neutral bathrooms and super clean, happy me :)

Maria is a great server! I love the unique seasonal flavors, and the gelato is always fresh and high quality! :]

Yelp
Food (4.6/5): The gelato here is bomb. I've had multiple flavors, the taste of each flavor is powerful and not overwhelmed by sweetness. I think the gelato and dark chocolate flavors are pretty good. Service (4.3/5): You can sample two flavors. The staff seem to be nice. Ambiance (4.3/5): Street parking was not difficult to find on a Saturday afternoon, but maybe I was lucky. There is some indoor seating, but also benches right outside the shop, which is nice on a sunny day.

Ashley S.

Yelp
definitely recommend this place to anyone in berkeley looking for authentic gelato! they have unique flavors, and the employees allow you to sample 2 flavors, too! i got hazelnut chocolate and vanilla, and they were both delicious! i liked that it's not overly chocolatey, but you can taste the quality in the ingredients. my mom lovesss gelato, and she gave the coconut flavor an 8/10! another plus is the prices are so good! it's a small store with a simple vibe, and they have several pints togo as well. sadly, there is no parking, but you should be okay to find some street parking nearby. great and authentic flavors you must check out!

Maggie C.

Yelp
My favorite gelato spot in Berkeley albeit on the pricier side. Some of their flavors can be quite unique. My favorite is still the classic stracciatella. The freshly shaven chocolate elevates the whole flavor and texture of each bite. I've also had their fruit flavors and they always taste super fresh. I got the mango this time and I could taste bits of fresh mango. It is pricey though and as other reviewers have said, the scoop size is not very large. Depending on the worker, I've had airy scoops and well packed scoops. Same goes with the pints. I've had well-packed pints on some days. I watched the worker pack a pint fresh this time around and he seemed to leave quite a bit of air when packing each scoop. Not a lot of indoor seating...a few bar seats. A couple benches outside the shop. More of a grab and go type of place.

Sukrit C.

Yelp
We loved the Caravaggio Gelato Lab. They have some unique flavors, not crowded and in these hot days, its the thing you need to feel complete. Service was nice and on point.

James B.

Yelp
In all fairness, I only had vegan gelato flavors this time. This may be the reason I didn't enjoy it too much -- though they don't have too many flavors, and the ones I wanted were vegan. It wasn't super gelato-like and in the lighter flavor I could taste hints of the milk substitute used. I had the passionfruit gelato, which was phenomenal--I love passionfruit with anything--though likely would've been better not vegan. I also had the almond, which was okay. The cone cups were a cute touch (hadn't seen before) but they're actually cake cones, though they look in color like sugar cones. I'll probably come back at some point to try a non vegan flavor, or for more of the passionfruit. But wish there were more flavors in general.

Peter D.

Yelp
Super yummy and fun spot for Glelato. Only thing that takes half a star off is they didn't have chocolate gelato when we were there!

Ka C.

Yelp
I was excited before coming but left with disappointment. We came on a Thursday night, found parking on the side street easily. There was only one staff working, she's nice and friendly. The gelato though, it was nothing extraordinary. We ordered a large for $7.25 (3 flavors) but for sure it didn't worth the $$. It was not a full cup. The ice cream was not on all the way to the bottom of the cup. We ended up had to go to another place for dessert since we did not satisfy with this one.

Dale S.

Yelp
Came here on a whim after an underwhelming dinner nearby left us hungry and I was so glad we did. Parking wasn't bad and we were able to find a spot less than a block away. This is a cute little shop with a very European vibe; simple colors, clean lines, minimalist in the best way. There are just a few seats inside, which were occupied, and a bench out front so most people were standing. They had lots of unique options and I can tell, by the menus I saw on Yelp and the one that was up when I was there, that the flavors change pretty regularly. Now, when I did my check in and posted the menu pick, I wasn't super excited about any of the flavors and I am getting older so my eyes aren't the best, but just by chance I was lucky enough to see, handwritten under the large menu in small letters "Hōjicha". I literally jumped with excitement! Hōjicha is my favorite flavor and rare to find so I ordered two scoops immediately. Sorry there is no picture of my gelato as I was too busy balancing my savoring and scarfing techniques and my mind was elsewhere. It was simple, creamy and delicious! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the woman behind the counter was not friendly at all. She seemed annoyed to be there. Fortunately, it seems other people have had a much better experience with staff so hopefully she was having a bad day and your service will be much better than mine was. I would definitely return.

Hope M.

Yelp
Highly recommend! All the flavors were so fresh and had a lovely creaminess to it. Even the vegan coconut gelato was amazing, you couldn't tell it was vegan! Limit of two flavors per tasting so choose wisely. Gelato was priced very reasonably too.

Austin H.

Yelp
AMAZING gelato! The black sesame tasted great and authentic. No artificial flavors used. The chocolate chip had great consistency and was refreshing too. I will admit though that the portions are kind of overpriced and that there isn't much space for seating. Staff is friendly. I would come back again, but not too often because of pricing.

Hannah S.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try Caravaggio's for so long, especially since I've tried their black sesame gelato and passion fruit sorbet at Ippuku! I tried coconut and chocolate chip and it was the perfect consistency & the flavor was so good! The service was amazing and she let me try a few samples:) today was a warm day so the store itself was a little hot inside--so we ended up taking it to go and walked around.

K S.

Yelp
This place had the freshest coconut gelato I've ever tasted (and I've had MANY coconut gelatos in Italy, as well as up and down the Eastern seaboard and West Coast). It was very refreshing, and the sweetness was just right. My teen son said this place will be his greatest memory of Berkeley.

James K.

Yelp
This gelato is unreal. The flavors are so intense - it is like eating a sweet creamy version of whatever you've ordered. Mango was one of my favorites. Service was fine, but you don't really come to an ice cream/gelato shop for service do you? 6/5 stars for the gelato

El Y.

Yelp
A bit overpriced, smaller portion sizes, but very interesting flavors on rotation. The store looks a bit too pristine but is a vibe. Try their black sesame when they have it! Can't sample flavors, not much space for sit down/dine-in.

abby a.

Yelp
Would be nice if the business was open when it says it is.. It was our 1st time here and will never go back

Dan C.

Yelp
Hand down the best dark chololate gelato I have eve tasted! I have often asked gelato bars if they can make an unsweetened chocolate gelato.. I have never seen that, but this was pretty close. Very dark, almost bitter. For many people, they might prefer to pair this with vanilla or coconut to mellow out the intense chocolate taste. I hope this place sticks around.

Uditi D.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEE gelato is sooo good, stracciatella is to die for soooooo deliciousss! i wish we could sample more than just two flavors, however. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE BANANA FOSTER ITS SO GOOD AND TASTE LIKE REAL BANANA AND NOT ARTIFICIAL. THE PISTACHIO IS CHEFS KISS. i rate my gelato places with how they do their pistachio gelato. it was not artificial green but instead a smooth and light brown color. the flavor was nutty and bold. so creamy and delicious. too good, too good gelato. price is okay. daddy's money so i went to town but if it was my money i would cry but still eat the gelato to comfort me. the ambiance is nice beautiful natural lighting. only one table so it's kinda small. they also make burrata and sell in their fridge but they didn't have any when we went (around 6 PM) so we assume it sells out fast. they store the gelato in the silver tins so u know it's good. overall would love to come again!

Naol T.

Yelp
We tried the 3 limited/seasonal flavors: pineapple, mission fig, pluot and a regular flavor (strawberry). Honestly the flavors were a tad muted and not bright or bursting with peak ripened fruit flavor. Texture wise it was icier than expected. Very limited seating. Staff was super friendly. All in all it's a refreshing treat on a sunny day.

Patrick D.

Yelp
Easily one of the best and gelato places in the entire area. Flavors here are the traditional and straight on when it comes to flavor, texture, and sweetness I got the passion fruit and coconut and found the coconut to be exceptional and the passion fruit to be pretty good since it wasn't overly sweet or grainy in texture The coconut gelato was incredibly smooth, not overly fake on the flavor, and was like a subtle almond joy The gelato itself doesn't skip corners and isn't filled with gum or served in the open tins where the top melts This place is worth seeking out and is affordable at $4.75 for 2 f

Miranda L.

Yelp
Delicious Dessert Excursion, but horrible customer service Dessert: The gelato was absolutely delicious without being overly sweet. We ordered 4 different kinds of gelato. The mango and passion fruit were delightful tarty non-dairy options. The Matcha gelato was better than the cappuccino gelato. I am a big match fan and the Matcha gelato tasted high grade. As for the cappuccino gelato, I wished for more of a coffee/espresso taste Service: poor mannerisms, this was a breaking point for me. The lady was very snobby when assisting us. We were the only ones in there and she was just starring at us, no welcome or embracing gesture of help (it was our first time there). She was very short in her words and frowning the whole time. Perhaps a long day of work? I worked in customer service before; thus, that isn't an excuse....like hey just be nice. I rather take my money else where like down the street to U :Dessert or Gadani Compare: Yummy dessert but I rather go to Gadani or U: Dessert Story for their organic desserts and wonderful service. With excellent local competition, it truly goes down to customer service. Defiantly skip this place if you are with family and want a good experience for them. Personally, I wouldn't come again due to bad service

Mei T.

Yelp
We stopped by for some sweet treats and got the Honeyglow Pineapple vegan gelato. The flavor was nice, not too sweet, and was made from real pineapple. The drawback was that it was rather "stringy" and there lots of pineapple fibers, which took away the smoothness of the gelato. For me, it was just ok. I would definitely not order this flavor again and not so certain I would come back. It's a bit on the expensive side, $4.75 for a very small and flat scoop. I paid $9.50 for 2, and would typically get a little more at other gelato shops. If the gelato were great, then it may have been worth it, but it wasn't....

Emerald J.

Yelp
The scoops are literally so tiny. The ice creams good, but no that much better than anywhere else.

Eddy H.

Yelp
While in Berkley during a recent family trip, we decided to get dessert after our meal. I actually found this place based upon their Yelp reviews. Knowing Berkley, it can be a challenge to find parking. We were able to find street parking but had to walk a few blocks back to the location. The place is open but appears to be under construction. The associate was friendly and welcoming. As others have mentioned, some flavors are out of stock. Nevertheless, all of the flavors we tried were delicious. The gelato is super creamy and very flavorful. The next time we're back in Berkley, we would definitely consider returning to Caravaggio Gelato Lab.

Misato S.

Yelp
Stopped by in the afternoon on a super hot day with my friend. Had to get the passion fruit and Indian mango combo since it was so refreshing!! The hazelnut was also super rich and creamy when I sampled it, but the fruity combo was more fitting for the day. My friend got the coconut and chocolate chip combo, which she loved as well. The worker was kind and patient ( there was a line out the door and it was super hot). The store is a little small but they do have seating inside and outside on the benches. Overall 8/10 - would come back if I'm visiting the area again.

Karen Y.

Yelp
Super creamy and tasty gelato, with a lowkey vibe. The interior decor is cute and straight from Italy. There are also board games available for you to play with. The hazelnut gelato is fantastic. So creamy, it dissolves in your mouth, and isn't too sweet, with a nutty flavor. I ended up buying a pint of it after getting a scoop, after being so impressed with the quality and texture. The strawberry gelato is made in house with real strawberries with chunks that come out in the gelato; very fresh and light. I would definitely come back and recommend!

Alice L.

Yelp
We always stop by whenever we're in town to get the chocolate & pistachio flavors. They're usually pretty busy but because of the atmospheric river rain, it was fairly quiet. This time hojicha was on the menu & it did not disappoint.

Luca R.

Yelp
We stopped by today. We wanted to try after all the great reviews we read. The gelato was not that great at all. We tried several flavors in our gelato (no, I did not ask for samplers, that is one of those very annoying things that just Americans like to do). None of the flavors was good. Tehy were all kind of mediocre. They were all a little grainy, even the gianduja was very bland, really sorry to say. There are other places in the bay area that have a better Italian gelato.

Christina K.

Yelp
OMG. My friend gave me dessert options, and I was intrigued by Caravaggio. We got here on a Sunday around 1 after cherry picking, and it was so amazing!! I tried the pistachio and liked it fine, and since I'm a nut gelato nut, I opted to get the regular size with pistachio and hazelnut. So creamy, perfect mouthfeel, and great flavor!! I am still thinking about it and was heartened to see that they had a delivery option on yelp (but they don't...since it appears I can only order cones) and I am craving it while I am sitting in the Doubletree Berkeley Marina, which feels like it might as well be across the Atlantic ocean from this Italian dessert Mecca, when you don't have a car. I want some more wah!! This is the best gelato I've had outside of Italy. In the states, I find myself eschewing gelato places in favor of premium ice cream spots only because it seems that most places are gelato in shopping malls or waterfronts, and not the real thing.

Jesse W.

Yelp
Very good gelato! pistachio flavor was my Favorite. Gonna be back to try the other flavors.

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Wished that we have a gelato place nearby our home that's this good. This is a treasure for east bay. We also load up pints of this when we come to east bay for visit. The gelato not only rivals any gelato place in Italy that I visited over 10+ trips to different cities, the gelato is also lactose free. For someone who is lactose intolerant, this is a huge game changer. The owner is a MIT grad who is a perfectionist and took the precision of engineering into the world of gelato with the best ingredients and leap frogged the rest. Come and try it for yourself. Pistachio, Earl grey, matcha, hazelnut, these are some of my favorites that are less sweet on the menu.

Michael J.

Yelp
Great little place doing a steady business. We tried four vegan flavors tonight - dark chocolate, coconut, watermelon and passion fruit. Really liked them all. The passion fruit was very strong and tart, but I like fruit flavors that way. Service was simple, just one worker. She was very helpful and working hard. She let us sample 5 flavors before we bought. Price is very fair for the area and product.

Elena P.

Yelp
Mixed coconut and milk chocolate yes absolutely delicious very creamy not sugary definitely I will come back if I am in the area

Kwan A.

Yelp
Was looking for gelato on cone/cup after dinner but purchase by pints only during Covid. It's a bit unfortunate as they had many interesting and unique favors which we wanted to try by scoops. Purchasing by the pint greatly limited the flavors we could try but I guess that's a necessary Covid adjustment. They also didn't have any ice to provide so it might be difficult for those who don't live close by unless you come prepared. There was only one girl manning the store and she seemed rather disengaged/indifferent. We got a pint each of Arabian Coffee and Gianduia(Choco-Hazelnut). I really enjoyed the Gianduia as it's creamy, smooth and rich. It would have been even better if the hazelnut favor was more prominent as it was heavily on the chocolate side rather than a balance between the two favors. Hopefully, things could get back to normal soon. We saw customers walking away upon learning that it's purchase by the pint only.

Katherine G.

Yelp
Pretty decent gelato in the Berkeley area! I've heard great reviews about this place and wanted to try, so I came around 5pm on a Saturday. There was no one inside so I was able to be served really quickly. I got the single scoop with mint scracciatella and passion fruit, and was happy to know they let you get multiple flavors in one scoop at no additional cost. The size of the overall scoop is quite small though for the price you pay. I was really excited about the mint scracciatella since I've never seen that before -- even though its really just mint chocolate chip. The mint tasted really fresh and I liked the chocolate shards inside as well. The passion fruit was quite tart and really strong, but I enjoyed it a lot. Worth a try if you're in the area!

Katrina L.

Yelp
I've been a regular at this place since it first opened. They changed their name recently, but their gelato still remains true and authentic. All the flavors have always been delicious, fresh, and the texture is so perfect. After recently going to Italy and trying gelato, I can safely say this is one of the few places in the Bay Area (maybe even the only place) that comes close and is actually on par with gelato from Italy. When they first opened, I met and spoke with the owners and they were from Italy so it was no surprise they could produce such a quality product. Not sure if they're still around, but they were very friendly and welcoming. What makes their gelato spot stand out from the rest is their choice and use of ingredients and the texture. The ingredients seem to always be high quality and fresh, but most importantly the texture is so delicate and creamy, yet not too rich, but also definitely velvety smooth! I have yet to have gelato out here as good of a texture. Maybe only one other place in SoCal I can think of... Top flavors: Gianduja (Chocolate Hazelnut "Nutella") Hazelnut Pineapple But all of their flavors never cease to disappoint and when it comes to ice cream flavors, it really is personal and to each his/her own so I say try them all! There's not a single flavor I didn't like or love! I bring so many people here and hope more people keep coming here so I can continue to enjoy my Italian gelato fix!

Saahil S.

Yelp
Quality gelato, kind service, possible regular supply issue. I came here for late night dessert recently and enjoyed the range of unique options! Unfortunately, as many of the other reviews mention, they were out of a few of the flavors I wanted to try. Nonetheless, still enjoyed the Tiramisu and Blood Orange flavors we got. Blood Orange was my favorite, as it wasn't too fruity and refreshing throughout. Bit pricey, but glad I tried this place! Would recommend stopping by.

Steve S.

Yelp
Best sugar free ice cream I ever had. All the flavors are rich in flavor. Texture is very good. Lady at the front was nice. Only downside is they offer only two samples.

Marco G.

Yelp
Best gelato in the Bay Area! Delicious flavours. The afogato is amazing. Straciatela is a perennial favourite.

Becky L.

Yelp
Best gelato even better than gelato paradiso! Must try their coconut & mango. The flavors are all unique & refreshing!

Angel L.

Yelp
I like the flavor offerings here but they're always out of them since they are only doing pints right now. The fig was a bit weird for me but I didn't realize it was vegan so the texture threw me off. The caramelized pear's flavor was really good, but I find that the common theme in their gelato is that it's not really smooth. It's rock solid so I would probably try somewhere else.

Emmeline W.

Yelp
Pints only due to COVID! While their cones/tasting are unavailable, Caravaggio's gelato & sorbets are still up for grabs. From what their owner explained, they're shipping pre-packed pints directly from their factory (?) out to their brick-and-mortar shop, each for a cool $12. While I'm not typically a pint type of gal, their flavors (Marizipan? Fiordilatte? Just spectacular.) really called for a moment of indulgence. My bf and I stopped by for a midday pick-me-up. Lovely vegan options. I adore that they have equally as many dairy and non-dairy options. BRAZILIAN PASSION FRUIT: The closest thing I've tasted to a fresh passion fruit in America. The tart, tropical flavor is uncanny-- even at bubble tea shops or Asian snack stores, I haven't tasted anything so close to the real thing. Wildly refreshing! After reading up a bit at home, it looks like Caravaggio aims to be sustainable, locally-sourced, & healthier than most gelato spots. Perfect for Berkeley (and me!). Would recommend to folks looking for a treat with less guilt on all fronts :-) Maybe having a pint (or two) won't be too bad after all...

Hanieh E.

Yelp
One of the best Gelato I have ever had, even in Italy! The tase is very balanced! Not too sweet

Courtney G.

Yelp
To call what Caravaggio's serves gelato is an insult to gelato.... Gelato is meant to be rich and creamy and extremely flavorful. Caravaggio's Gelato Lab is serving watery "ice cream" with lackluster flavors that left a slightly filmy substance in my mouth after tasting it. Disappointed to say the least after the fantastic reviews on Yelp. The best part of the Stracciatella ice cream I had was the chocolate inside of it (not a complement when I'm there to have delicious gelato). Overall, i wouldn't recommend trying it as it struck me as something closer to frozen yogurt versus gelato and that is SUPER disappointing, especially considering the price point it's being served at...

Andreas G.

Yelp
Tried some ice cream here today to take a break from our Sunday walk. My wife got straciatella and Gia duos and I had pistachio and gianduia. The ice cream tasted great, really creamy and not too sweet. I've preferred the pistachio a bit, but the gianduia was also really good. The store is currently being remodeled but I didn't mind. Everything still looked clean and the person behind the counter was really nice. They have a few benches outside you can enjoy your ice cream on.

Matthew H.

Yelp
A perfect little dessert shop after a big meal! Fior de latte - extremely creamy - perfect subtle sweetness - milky flavor - absolutely delightful - the cracker was very crisp and a perfect complement to the gelato Stracciatella - same as everything I said above - the chocolate give it another element of deliciousness The menu is very cute and aesthetic with the hand written words. The workers are always very patient and kind when giving samples of the gelato. Overall, the restaurant has a nice feel to it where one could casually come and enjoy a refreshing dessert comfortably.

Gen M.

Yelp
The best gelato in the bay! I'm so happy to have found this place after so many hit and misses trying to find a legitimate gelato place since most places around here claim to be gelato but are just really bad ice cream. This place is the real deal, superb texture and excellent flavors, not too sweet, great quality, feels like I'm back in Italy! Also the workers are always very sweet and helpful. FYI they have a punch card :) I recommend the almond, hazelnut, and cardamom rose! Very clean, straight forward and classy atmosphere.

Mei C.

Yelp
The Gelato Lab has such wonderful gelato!!! Due to covid, they have a sign of available flavors right outside the door and a table to block the entrance to the store. They currently sell in pints ($12/each...pricy....) due to covid, and I really wish I could try some of their flavors before buying, but one cannot be choosy in these hard times. I bought three different flavors: Brazilian passionfruit, pistachio, and Gianduia (Choco-Hazelnut). All of them were SO GOOD! The flavors literally burst in your mouth. I went towards the evening when the store was about to close, so they ran out of some of the flavors I wanted to try. I'm not sure if there's a limited amount they make per day or if it's just out until they make the next batch, so maybe try going earlier in the day? The worker was very nice and masked. Also, once the pandemic is over, this seems like a nice store to just chill and have a cute small date ;).

Janessa H.

Yelp
Best Gelato in Downtown Berkeley. The small comes with two small scoops (can be two flavors). Quaint shop, decorated nicely and has a big screen that shows the gorgeous landscape of Italy! I got the Pistachio and Stracciatella. Great combination of nutty and rich chocolate flavor. Try it out! They sell pints too (I may have taken 1 or 2 home)

liz k.

Yelp
Wow, this is the best gelato I've had. Reminds me of the famous Grom in Florence. Just delicious. Seasonal ingredients and not too sweet. Can't wait to go back.

Jiffy J.

Yelp
This Gelato is excellent (smooth texture, aroma and not too sweet) and their flavors change regularly. While not all flavors are vegan ice cream (I think), it is all lactose free. They also serve espresso drinks and have a small seating area. Highly recommend.
