This shop is just a couple of blocks from my new place, so I was excited to try it on my walk back from the store today. I waited a minute for someone to come out of the back, which wouldn’t normally be an issue, but it was so hot inside that it felt like a lifetime and I considered walking out because I was getting heat sick quickly. But when she did come out, I sampled the chocolate hazelnut gelato, and it was really good. I quickly decided on an affogato, but when I noticed she was making it in a metal cup, I let her know that I wanted it to go. She said, “ oh we don’t do affogatos to go,” which surprised me, because I’ve had an affogatos to go from almost every gelato shop in the Bay Area! I told her that I couldn’t stay because I had a load of laundry finishing in 2 minutes (in a shared laundry room with broken machines so it’s REALLY shitty to take them over and be late.) I’ve also had bariatric surgery and can’t always finish things quickly, so I never ever get drinks NOT “to go.” She scrambled for a container to put it in and acted kind of put out about it. If that’s your policy, you really should be checking with people when they order!
Unfortunately, it was a FANTASTIC affogato. I say unfortunately, because I can’t imagine I’d ever come back and drink this inside because it was so uncomfortable (both the temperature inside and the kind of crappy attitude from the employee) and because my specific dietary situation doesn’t always allow me to finish things. I hope you consider changing this policy!
