Carbon Athletic Club: An Enduring Symbol of Detroit’s Industrial Roots | Eater Detroit

"This century-old, members-only clubhouse sits under the I-75 overpass in Delray’s industrial southwest and feels like a stubborn island of community amid refineries, rail lines, and the Rouge River. It hosts lively, decidedly unpretentious events — from pig roasts (a $15 plate heaped with freshly roasted pork, veggies and sides, the air heavy with vinegar and brown sugar) to bonfires, movie nights, steak dinners and Halloween parties — mostly held on a member-built patio where every light, paver and item of furniture has been donated and installed by volunteers. The interior is a time capsule of immigrant-era Detroit: sepia team photos, polished worn floors and a Streamline Moderne back bar salvaged from a 1930s tavern, reflecting roots in the turn-of-the-century industrial neighborhood that grew up around the Michigan Carbon Works. Membership is inclusive and structured — applicants need sponsorship by an active member, are voted on quarterly, pay annual dues ($30; $20 for retirees) plus a one-time $20 application fee — and guests are welcome; practical rules (a massive guest book, adherence to dues and house norms) are enforced by a fiercely protective secretary. Hours vary by day but generally center on late afternoons and evenings (closed Mondays; typical openings Tues/Thu/Sun ~4–8 p.m., Wed from 10:30 a.m., Fri/Sat 4–9 p.m. and often later), and during the pandemic the club shifted activities outdoors with strict masking and distancing and limited bar entry. The vibe is egalitarian and earthy — no trendy cocktails, just beers and generous shots — sustained by multi-generational loyalty, a recent influx of younger members eager for history and belonging, and a resilient attitude toward whatever industrial or infrastructural threats the neighborhood may face." - Mickey Lyons

Love the history of Carbon Athletic Club! Many of the men in my family were members the past 60+ years, and I became a proud member myself in November, 2023. It’s a great reason to go back to the neighborhood where my great grandparents (3 sets of them) settled when they came from Poland. I like to sit at the bar and picture them drinking with me!

Very cool and welcoming place - was able to visit with Detroit History Tours! The bartender had great drink recommendations. The place is dripping with a laid-back social club atmosphere and historic charm. Cool history and people. Love it. Thank you!

Google
Carbon Athletic Club was a chill dive. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but the prices are right and also have live music.

A historic members-only club in the middle of Delray. It's a great place with great people.

Yelp
This is really a 'private' social club that is a dive bar in Delray Detroit. If you're not familiar with that area, it's in Southwest Detroit over by Zug Island and practically under the Ambassador Bridge. The area has struggled which makes it all the more amazing that the CAC is still alive and kicking. I've been a few times with a group I bike ride with, one of our group is a member, which means we get in too. That doesn't mean you can't join or go visit and get a tour and a drink. Someone in the club / bar will be happy to be your sponsor so you too can be a member of this elite establishment. The drinks were cold and the food was good. Not a lot of beer options, again, this is more dive bar then craft bar, and that's ok, sometimes that's all you need. Once the Corona lockdown is over, they'll need some love to get going again for sure. Check their facebook page to see their hours and figure out when to visit and join.

Yelp
The Carbon is all that has been said here and more. Located just south of the old Delray railroad interlocking tower, and just west of the I-75 bridge, it is one of the last vestiges of old school Delray that hasn't been destroyed either by Marathon's expansion, I-75 or shear neglect. We were introduced to it by friends, which is the common theme - like has been said here before, it's a private club that acts like a Dive Bar....or visa-versa. That being the case, they are fairly friendly with newcomers, so just think of it as paying a cover charge with lasting impact If you wonder what blue collar Detroit was all about in the 50's and 60's, the CAC is like entering a time machine of just that. That said, be warned - if you can't tolerate Miller High Life, Broken Polish mixed with expletives, and half-painted tin ceilings more covered in cigarette tar than paint, this might not be for you. If, however, you can and do love a classic blue collar corner bar and all that it entails - well, welcome friend to your new home away from home.

Yelp
Stopped by here on a tour with Detroit History Tours and had a blast. Played some darts enjoyed drinks and beers but the Zug Island Run Off shots are a must if they haven't run out. They only make one batch per day and it's a secret recipe. It is a "Private club" so call before you go. Oh and buy a couple of their scratch offs for prizes (we got a coozie). Cash goes towards the upkeep of the building.

Yelp
The Carbon is the best! I've visited several times and especially enjoy the events they host (a big Holiday Train gathering, a chili cook-off, Hungarian dinners, etc.). Drinks are VERY reasonably priced, and the bartenders, owners/managers, and clientele are all great and fun to talk to. I love the Carbon's history and the artifacts and photos on display. As mentioned by another reviewer, it is a private club, so you have to be a guest of a member or someone has to vouch for you as a visitor for your first time. Membership costs are very reasonable, though, and the fact that it's a private club means that it has a more social atmosphere than other bars. You get to know other members, and everyone is welcoming and friendly. It can be tricky to find, but Delray is a unique area with a fascinating history, so even if you get a bit lost on your way there, it'll likely be an interesting and worthwhile detour. The Carbon is one of my favorite bars in the city, definitely worth a visit (or ten)!

Yelp
Stopped here with a group during a Detroit HIstory Tour. Wow, talk about Nostalgia! Its your typically "dive" bar. Very warm and inviting and low key. Cash only bar! Loved looking at all the decor and pictures of the various teams from back in the day. Might look a little scary from the outside but that's part of it's character. Got to see the salt mines right outside of this place. Would definitely go back. Stop by for a drink!
