Why the Chicken Cutlet Is Underrated - Eater

Hospitality was wonderful. It wasn’t crowded on a weeknight around dinner time. Sat at the bar and was promptly served the entire night. Meatball appetizer - 3 meatballs with sauce and a loaf of garlic bread. These were good but meatballs were tough and you’ll be tasting the garlic for hours afterwards. Meatballs are my favorite but the reflux I got from therse will be a no-go in the future. This typically happens when the sauce is on the more acidic side. Side salad - the Italian dressing was delicious. Wish I had ordered a full salad entree. 4 meat pizza was good, it’s Sota style but had good flavor and amount of toppings were a good value.

Pizza was great! Only thing that wasn't super great was the buffalo wings because they were cold but great flavor.

Wow, if you haven't tried this gem, you're missing out. Carbones Pizza on Randolph is family owned and shouldn't be confused with the chain Carbone's. On Saturday I was hungry for pizza and realized we hadn't been to Carbone's in nearly 15 years. We used to go often when we lived nearby. That settled our decision to see if it was as good as we remembered. We sat down and a server was at our table about 1 minute later asking if we would like anything to drink or had any questions. We ordered the Italian cheese bread with sauce as an appetizer and a 14 "thin crust pepperoni pizza. My husband also had a Surly Furious. The cheese bread ... Oh yum. So much cheese! No, really- they do not skimp on the cheese here. The homemade marinara sauce has a wonderful tangy bite to it. Really delicious. Our pizza came out just after we finished up our appetizer. It was divine. Why? The pepperoni had flavor and wasn't soggy, there was a mild kick to the pizza- not spicy, just a nice zip that hits your tongue and is so so perfectly right, and again there is a wonderful amount of cheese. Oh, it's also cut in squares which is awesome. Service was fabulous and friendly, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the food was outstanding. Accessibility: Be aware that parking is limited. If you're in a wheelchair, try to get dropped off at the alley near the little parking lot if traffic allows so there's room for your chair to exit. Seating is excellent for wheelchairs. The tables are fully open underneath so even rigid wheelchairs with fixed footplates can pull fully in. There is room to navigate the restaurant in a wheelchair. I didn't go into the bathroom in my chair so can't comment on that. I was able to get in the main door in my chair but there is signage leading wheelchairs to the secondary door which did look easier to navigate. It is about 20 feet from the first.

The server could have been better. Forgot plates and utensils. The wings were cold. They are just heated and served from frozen. Could have left them in longer to heat up, but flavors were on point. Pizza was perfect. I would go back if in the area.

Google
Had another absolutely fabulous pizza from Carbones. My absolute favorite style pizza's Minnesota tavern style, Always the best!! Definitely will be returning! 😁🍕

Google
One of the worst sandwiches I have ever had, I should have gone to subway instead. I paid extra for veggies and cheese. These were the skinniest tomato slices I have ever seen, one leaf of lettuce, and super thin onions. Skimpy on everything, and the bread was hard and dry. Only come here for pizza!

Google
First time in Minnesota so it was my first time ordering from here. The service was awesome as soon as I walked in I was greeted. My order came out in a reasonable time. The food was delicious! If you are ever in the area I would recommend this place.

Google
Hands down best pizza in St Paul! Been coming here since college and happily introducing our kids to it as well. It's our favorite spot for family pizza night. The seating is comfy, the food is delicious and there are always good beers on tap. The cheese bread is legendary, don't forget to try it.

Yelp
Back again for the coveted lunch special. It comes with a soup or salad and a pizza or a sandwich plus a drink. There are different daily deals, but you can always pair your lunch special with a pizza. It's just the right amount. I didn't take a picture of the salad, but it was a vinaigrette salad. Very good! Cheap lunch about $12.

Yelp
We had a great lunch. Many specials and all at a very reasonable cost under $10! Service was stellar and the young girls really hustled to get the food and drinks to the tables! At-a-girl!!! A warm and friendly atmosphere along with a broad meby means well be back soon.

Yelp
I live near this carbone's so naturally I've visited a few times. This location always seems busy, parking on the street is easy but can be annoying when customers park too close to the curb making it difficult/dangerous to turn on Randolph. The pizza here it's ok. They put A LOT of cheese on their pizza so I ask for "half cheese" for a regular portion. Service is either okay or bad. I've seen people come in and wait for 10-15 mins and not get served. I've also eaten an entire pizza and not get a water refill until asking for it. The vibe here is weird. Definitely not my favorite place for dine in pizza. If the servers and customers were more diverse, I would feel more comfortable dining in. Their lunch special is pretty good. You can get a 1 topping personal pizza, salad and drink for 9 dollars.

Yelp
Pretty good pizza! Cheapest dinner I've had a while. Carbones special WITH fish is the way to go! They were pretty busy with regulars on an early Sunday evening. It's a seat-your-self model, so we grabbed some spots at the bar. The server was attentive and quick. Overall, a nice affordable casual pizza place to grab a tasty bite!

Yelp
I have had the pizza here both in the restaurant and take home but my favorite is the Italian sub with 3 meats, hot peppers and both cheeses. I get it served hot and it is one of the best sub sandwiches I have ever had. They do serve wine and beer. Joslyn is my usual server and she is excellent at her job.
google avatar

Yelp
The pizza here is delicious and dangerous (because it's hard to stop eating it once you've started)! LOVE Carbone's pizza!!

Yelp
This is my happy place. It's where I go for my birthday. It's where I'd want my last meal. The pizza is fantastic. It's what I'd call "Minnesota style" pizza, thin crust cut into squares. Their cheese is bursting with flavor. They'll sell you just the cheese at cost if you ask nicely. I used to buy it and cook with it at home, not just pizza but like everything. The service is good. Plenty of street parking. Carbones on Randolph is it.

Yelp
I love a local pizza place, and this is definitely that. However, the pizza was very average. The main issue I saw with it is that it seems the vegetables are put on the pizza raw, and under thick layer of cheese. The effect of that was undercooked veggies lacking flavor on the pizza. I also felt that the pizza was undercooked in general, only adding to the issue with the veg. I want to love this place, because it's a local spot that's been around forever, but I also want to provide honest feedback to try and help make things better.

Susanne G.

Yelp
Excellent service, salad and pizza! Consistently amazed. Highly recommend!' Best za in town!

Yelp
Your pizza is why I come to your restaurant and it is the reason I had been coming to your restaurant for 30 years. However, your current wait staff needs training and supervision. A few things would go a long way... make sure the order is read back to the customer so there is no confusion later, make sure you understand how the bill will be divided later, make sure you check on your party if they need more drinks, napkins or anything else periodically thru out the meal. Clear excess glassware through out the meal, bring fresh glasses for new wine orders, make your best to align the oven so the orders do come to the table at the same time. Please do better. I love your restaurant and really want to continue to come.

Yelp
If you're expecting a hearth-baked margherita pizza or swiss chard salad here, you're going to be sorely disappointed. No, Carbone's is eye-talian, not Italian. This long-time establishment serves up an antipasto salad with ice berg lettuce topped with sliced black and green olives, and pepperoncini straight out of a jar. Also topped with strips of pepperoni, a slice of salami, and a slice of mozz with your choice of dressing, likely all from a Sysco truck. A slice of buttered Texas toast cut diagonally with garlic salt. You know what, though? With a pint of the freshest, coldest Bent Paddle Bent Hop in the Twin Cities, it's freaking delicious for a low-cost, great weekday dinner seated at the bar. Their pizza is the very traditional midwestern, cracker-crust herby sauce affair with a good slab of melted mozz. I always ask it to be baked golden brown. Their default baking is a little under-done in my opinion. It's served to you uber-casually on a butcher paper lined cafeteria tray. They really aim to please, as their motto is "pizza as you like it". The staff are often young college students. They are lively, fun, and courteous. Their recent expansion happened some time in 2018-19, when they acquired the neighboring space east of the original restaurant and they expanded to include a bar counter and more seating. It has really made it a cozy neighborhood place in my mind to stop by regularly every 8-10 weeks or so. I pass it often on the way home from coffee and I'm never disappointed.

Yelp
We pop into this little pizza joint. Got a stop up at the bar, so we could look outside. Ordered a nice little house salad that was ok. Ordered a large special, minus the fish.(no shrimp or anchovies) for us, plus we like ours well done. Came out pretty quickly and was delicious. Nice service too.
google avatar

Justine L.

Yelp
Decent pizza, but definitely caters to a certain type of pizza lover. The pizzas are square and cut into small squares. They are very "America" for pizza type with loads of cheese. I prefer Neapolitan style better, so this isn't my fav type, but my kid loves this type. The restaurant is always full, and has good service too. Nice local business and kind staff.
google avatar

Yelp
I was craving carbone's recently and decided to go to this one. The staff was nice and were working very hard as a it was a busy nice. I did have to wait 40 minutes for my pizza but it was done on time. They do put the pizza in bags at this location which I assume is to make the crust stay crispy but it is kind of hard to carry more than one not in boxes. That being said you can ask for a box when ordering. Overall it was good but the sauce from this location is different then the one I'm used to, this was much more tomato based. I probably won't go to this location again as I do have a location I prefer but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Yelp
I have lived in the neighborhood for years but had never been in before. Got a meatball sandwich and it was fantastic. The cheese. The sauce. The meatballs. The bread. It was all perfect. I have been missing out but I am now definitely going back.
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
Only been here once but ordered a little bit of everything. The pizza, mozzarella sticks, and garlic knots stand out. The knots aren't brushed with garlic butter but submerged in it. The mozzarella sticks were coated in a sweet batter that complimented the cheese and was even better without the dipping sauce. The pepperoni pizza was incredible. Tasty with thing square slices not drenched in grease. I also ordered the honey bbq wings and they were not good. They had almost no flavor and was like eating plain wings. The ones themselves tasted like they were boiled or were lightly baked.

Yelp
In the mood for a classic pizza I suggested we give Carbone's a try. Super convenient on Randolph Ave. we ordered take out and I picked up. Pizza was ready to go. Delicious pizza cut the Minnesota way! Great quantities of topping and cheese. The sauce had a nice flavor and the toppings were fresh and tasty. Now I why this place has been around so long. My new local, traditional pizza joint. I look forward to trying more of the menu.

Yelp
The food was awesome and the food server was very good at her job. The female manager was very rude and arrogant. My wife who was blind was talked like a child and treated in a demeaning manner. Their policies about parties above 12 will be required to be put on one ticket on a credit card which would have been very hard on the credit card holder. I guarantee that we will as a group take our business somewhere else and I myself will never eat there also. We usually as a group get together for four times a year. This is the first time we had a chance to looked at this restaurant to see if we were going to pick this restaurant for one of our gathering places. People from the American Council for the Blind, two different churches, wrestling club and a transgender organization were present during this time in your restaurant. We are going to make another selection. My name Carl N. 65-207-3366 if this establishment has a problem with my evaluation. I am for myself will never go to carbone's in the future
google avatar

Kristin B.

Yelp
Ordered 2 large pizzas, it was OK. But didn't like that they sliced it in tiny squares. Too much onion (extender) on their house pizza, the tomato base was flavorless. Was like eating an onion pizza. Chicken wings was underdone. Spaghetti meatballs was flavorless. Garlic bread was good.

Jack S.

Yelp
Love it. The staff is really kind. The wait time isn't too bad. Overall, the service is great. The ambiance is good. The restaurant is well lit and is decorated well. Inside the restaurant is a bar. The food there is great. Personly, I recommend either getting the garlic Knotts or just a plain pepperoni pizza.

Yelp
Good, not amazing, but still good. We got two pizzas for takeout. First, we built our own with a 14" large thin crust including sauce, cheese, tomatoes, green pepper, mushrooms, and hot pepper rings. Second, my boyfriend wanted to try The Lafay, which is their "own special creation, blending a pizza and a sub sandwich." Melted mozzarella, salami, lettuce, tomato, onion and hot pepper rings stuffed between two pizza crusts. It was not what we expected and resembled more of a giant pita sandwich. Overall, we were satisfied with our pizzas, but will continue to scout out the best pizza in the city before this becomes a go-to spot.
google avatar

Shayna T.

Yelp
I absolutely love picking up a pizza for takeout from here! I would frequently get pizza for takeout from a different location as a kid, so getting Carbone's is always comforting in a way. No complaints for this location. I have never had a problem with the staff and customer service is great. Calling and ordering is easy, and the pizza is always ready when they say it will be. I love their pan style pizza and they are more generous than most places with the toppings. Lifelong customer here!

Terese M.

Yelp
We asked for an extra crispy crust and an order of pizza fries. We got an undercooked pizza and an order of French fries with a container of nacho cheese whiz. This cost us $50. What do you think?

Deborah W.

Yelp
The best pizza I've ever had in my entire life anywhere in the world! I wish I could bring you to California. The Randolph location is the best Carboni's restaurant.

Pam J.

Yelp
Ordered for pick-up pizza. It was still hot when we got it home, and delicious! We like pan pizza, and Carbone's is consistently great!

Elder S.

Yelp
In a word - greasy. Flavor wasn't bad but with all the grease I'll go to Parkway next time.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Carbones has served the very best in thin-crust pizza in the TC. I live in Florida and every time I'm in the Twin Cities it is always a large Carbones special.
google avatar

Wendy R.

Yelp
I went to pick up pizza for work and they were Johnny on the spot. The business decor was outdated but the cleanest place I have ever seen. They were very thankful and kind, Great Customer Service!
google avatar

Jeremy D.

Yelp
They would get 5 stars if the little white cardboard/paper thing didn't fuse to the crust when you got an everything pizza as delivery causing you to literally have to eat paper... That being said, it is AWESOME pizza!
google avatar

Maureen S.

Yelp
Helped open this establishment back in 1962. My family will go nowhere else for pizza. Not only the BEST Carbone Pizza Restaurant, it is the BEST pizza restaurant! My son's first solid food was a square of Carbone Pizza! Wish we Iive closer -- ate here once a week until we moved farther out. Also love their side salad with Italian dressing!
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Well, if you like raw dough inside your pizza, and be charged $11.00 delivery fee on top of your $8.00 tip, and insulted, Carbone's is the place to order from. Disgusting. The Seamless agent told me Carbone's claimed there was no way this happened. But when I called Carbone's directly, the jerk who picked up said, "That's the way we make our pizza." So obviously they are not interested in telling you the truth, or providing good service. Double disgusting. Now instead of a refund of $19.00, plus tax, on a $54.48 order, I am forced to dispute the entire order with my bank. Very stupid of Carbone's. Seamless/GrubHub and Carbone's just blame each other for this stuff and hide behind each other. Seamless said they must arrange the refund and call the restaurant themselves. Carbone's told me to take it up with Grubhub/Seamless. It was a disgusting pizza and it's waiting to go into the garbage. It was almost midnight and I was starving -- I would have eaten just about anything. But not this.
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
$7.00 for a generously portioned cup (BIG cup) of soup (or salad), 7 inch personal pizza, and a free drink! Summed up in one word: YUM! I'll be back! You should come.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Not sure this was the location we ate at. However we were told this was the best pizza in the twin cities. They were right. Fantastic! We ordered a large pizza with everything on it and a caesar salad. The salad was enough for 3 people! Wife and I almost ate the entire pizza

Jeff C.

Yelp
The pizza is the best cracker crust pizza in the Twin Cities! I liked the atmosphere of the pre-remodel, but understand the need for expansion. Still make regular trips in from Excelsior to get a Carbone's (on Randolph) fix. 10" sausage and pepperoni is my go to and I don't think there is anything better on the menu than that. The 10" is perfect ratio of inner pieces to outer pieces, so consider getting smaller pizzas rather than a large one. Enjoy!
google avatar

Nicholas J.

Yelp
This pizza is chronic. I always get the sausage, onion, and sauerkraut. This is classic pizza. I'd like things like pizza Luce and toppers then don't get this. However if ur well cultured and understand what pizza is supposed taste like then try this out
google avatar

LaTasha S.

Yelp
Salty, salty, salty.. Saltiest pizza I've had by far! Pretty bland what some may call "safe" pizza. But I'd rather have Pizza Hut or Dominos and I purchase neither of those on a regular. (Only in extreme cases) The service was subpar as we were greeted and refills occurred, but it took forever to get our pizza! We started with the meatballs and I would not suggest these rubber balls to anyone. She said they were made "in house" but they tasted very processed. It's an okay place for a neighborhood restaurant, but not somewhere I would frequent.
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
I went there totally on the reputation of this beloved restaurant. While driving home with my pizza next to me smelling the wonderful aroma coming from the bag it was wrapped in I couldn't till I got home to dive in. I was very disappointed The flavor was bland. The crust was uninspiring. It was very salty. For " Four Meat " pizza , there really wasn't a whole lot of meat to be had. As I stated earlier. . . " disappointed"

Yelp
We've lived here for three years now, so we finally decided to try the pizza place that is arguably the closest to our house. Go figure. Sometimes we don't win any awards for smarts. As others have said, Carbone's serves thin crust pizza cut into squares. The crust is really crackery and crisp, which I personally like very much. Despite the pile of toppings and generous amount of cheese, the crust remained crispy, which is a feat unto itself. I also really did like the cheese -- nice and rich, melty and delicious. It was a bit on the greasy side, but it's pizza. So whatever. One in our party thought the sauce was pretty sweet but to me it just tasted like good pizza sauce. We also got the "pizza fries" or whatever they're called, which really was like a small cheese pizza cut into strips and served with a side of marinara sauce. The crust on this was different, thicker and more like a pan pizza. We enjoyed it but I really think the name of the dish is kind of confusing. As others have mentioned, it's carry-out or dine in only. No delivery. The dine-in portion of the restaurant was small... some tables and booths and a seat yourself sign. Nothing fancy. They certainly seem to do a robust takeout business though. The pizza in a bag thing was something I'd never experienced before moving to Minnesota, but I have been pleased that the staff here does tend to offer you a box if you are carrying out more than a few pies. Though they do always still bag one pie that presumably will be on the top of the stack. Despite what you may think, the bags actually do a good job of keeping the pizza warm until you can get it home. Or, maybe we just feel that way because we live so close. Either way, Carbone's is a perfectly decent old-school down-home pizza shop. If you like that sort of thing :-)

Yelp
I had forgotten just how much I like Carbone's Pizza. This place is slightly divey in a good St. Paul way. In some ways it reminds me of the original Red Savoy's - dark, cozy, with pizza to die for. If you order take-out, you'll be surprised that their pizza doesn't come in a box. They'll hand it to you in one of their paper bags. Less cost for them, plus it helps the crust not to get as soggy so quickly. Trust me, you don't want their crust getting soggy. Their crust is a thin, almost cracker-like crust, that's done to perfection. They invented flatbread before there was flatbread. It gives you that crispy bottom without the charred, burnt taste that many pizza parlors have. On top of the crisp crust is a thin layer of tangy pizza sauce that's slightly bland. The toppings are terrific - thick pepperoni, slices of onion, and mountains of cheese. Does it get any better? You better order two as you'll eat through one in no time. Our whole family exclaimed appreciation and delight for their wondrous pizza and declared that we would definitely be back for more.
google avatar

Nancy A.

Yelp
Pizza. Mmmmm. Cut Minnesota-style (square slices). Great ratio of cheese to red sauce and other toppers. This gem is in my neighborhood and has been for years and years. They've expanded their indoor and outdoor seating over the last 2 years. The outdoor seating is on the north side of the street so no screaming hot sun warming your beer. Beyond pizza, their salads are made with fresh fresh fresh ingredients. The spaghetti got raves from my pasta-loving brother-in-law. Pick-up is super efficient. They deliver via Bite Squad which drives up the price point-- but so worth it when I'm craving Carbone's.
google avatar

Shannon N.

Yelp
I love the Carbone's Special "no fish"... It's the best MN pizza ever made! The staff is always friendly and attentive. I have called for take out...sat at the bar...and ordered from the dining room...Always consistently great quality and delicious food.
google avatar

Brandi B.

Yelp
Delicious!!! Nothing more to add here! Great location, and it's the style of pizza for the local community. Would come here again!
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
Wow, that is really exceptional pizza. I can't believe it's taken me 20 years to finally try this place. But it's extraordinary pizza. Super thin and crispy crust, a wonderful sauce, more than enough cheese. Definitely no need to order double cheese on this pizza. We had a sausage with mushrooms, and a pepperoni with mushrooms. Both were absolutely perfect. My only complaint is that they don't deliver. It's kind of a hassle to go drive over there and get the pizza, and if you get more than one they're almost impossible to handle by yourself.
google avatar

Renee S.

Yelp
Reallly tasty thin, thin crust pizza. They load it with toppings as many places do not. You ask for sausage? each little square has 2-4 pieces on it. Onions come loaded in thin long shreds, everywhere. Very nice. It's best to eat it in if you want the crust crisp, though. I knocked one star off because they charge a bit too much for the amount you get.
google avatar

Santina U.

Yelp
This is my favorite Carbone's. It's not part of the franchises and maybe that makes a difference. I've only had the pizza but it's always delicious. They recently remodeled and it looks great inside tho I always get my order to go. I definitely wouldn't mind dining in with a group of friends some time for some beer and pizza tho.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Best pizza in the world. Homemade sauce(secret family recipe) and sausage for starters. They've recently renovated the place and added an attached dining room as well as a bar. Prices have remained affordable despite the remodeling. Daily lunch specials available and plenty of other options if you're not in the mood for pizza. Spaghetti, meatball sandwich, soup and salad and hoagies to name a few. Family owned joint since 1962 and it's not affiliated with the corporate versions you'll find around the metro area. Best of the best.
google avatar

Jane M.

Yelp
I'd not had a sit-down meal in the renovated space before today, It looks lovely but please work on the traffic flow and space layout issues. My table was jostled constantly and my drink was almost tipped a few times. I'm glad you're busy and successful but I wanted a long time to be waited on (It is the curse of the single female dining out). Then I wasn't done with my pizza and had two people offer to box it up. That really is not a subtle way to tell someone to move on. I had not even finished my soda. It was a busy evening but I felt shooed out. My food was good as always but ... I'm a plus-30 year customer and am disappointed in how I was treated. i guess it's carryout from now on. Eating out by yourself isn't a lot of fun as it is. This experience made it less so.

Kevin G.

Yelp
STAY AWAY!!! This place is a disaster...bad food, very high prices, terrible service (even thought they had tons of wait staff). What a disappointment!!!
