The Best Doughnuts in the Twin Cities

"Cardigan Donuts has two downtown Minneapolis locations, at City Center and in the IDS building. Each serves decadent doughnut takes: Think cake doughnuts drizzled with a coffee glaze, Bismarks stuffed with a malted vanilla cream filling, and old fashioned doughnuts made moist and dense with Greek yogurt mixed into the batter. The IDS location also serves doughnut ice cream sandwiches and doughnut blendees (doughnuts mixed into ice cream)." - Serena Maria Daniels

"With a cozy fireplace and inventive flavors, Cardigan Donuts offers a sweet escape from office drudgery.  Try the crunchy old-fashioned donut made with Greek yogurt or an airy French cruller.  Premium fried dough offerings include a cinnamon sugar-dusted churro roll and a cake donut flavored with Black Eye Roasting Co. coffee; check the website for limited-edition “inspired” flavors.  There’s also a selection of Greek yogurt and oatmeal bowls, from wholesome baked apple to dessert-inspired chocolate sundae." - Stacy Brooks

Wow! Absolutely delicious! I can usually walk past a donut but these donuts were looking really good behind the case. But even the donuts on display looking incredibly appetizing didn’t even prepare me for the level of freshness and deliciousness they harbored! I intended to get better pics but I had to control myself just long enough to snap a shot. I got the rhubarb (pictured) and the berries and cream (I think it’s called) with a free coffee (buy 2 donuts get a free coffee). Oh and the store is nicely decorated and the lady behind the counter was friendly! Thanks for a great experience!

Google
Cardigan used to be my favorite donut shop in Minnesota. But lately, I’ve tried twice and been super disappointed both times. Last time I pre-scheduled a drop off order for 8am. 10:30 rolled around, no delivery, no communication. I called and they just said “oh yeah, it’s been a busy delivery day. If you needed your donuts for a 8:30 meeting, you should have said that in the notes of your order.” What?! Why would I schedule a drop off time if it’s ignored? Then in my order this morning, all I could taste in the old fashioned’s was the fry oil/lard. They notoriously had the best old fashioned donuts because they had a creamy vanilla flavor. The oily taste was terrible and I ended up throwing out the old fashioned. Additionally, the iced cake donuts looked like this. A little extra care and frosting would make them 1000x more aesthetically appealing. These just look terrible. Nobody wants to go downtown anymore, and you guys used to be a reason to make the trip; but not for me anymore, and not for my business meetings anymore. Such a bummer, quality and service has completely tanked in the last few years.

This is my current favorite donut shop in the twin cities. They have the best glazed old fashioned in town, and the other items I tried were also very good.

Google
A Cardigan donut; cozy and very comforting! While walking thru City Center Mall, by accident I came across Cardigan Donuts located on the 2nd floor down the way from Chase Bank. Being a true donut diva, I wanted to go in and look, select and taste all the types of donuts; old fashioned, glazed raised, filled, cake and iced. I didn’t see a cruller but I got there later in the day so they could have been sold out along with Boston creme (my favorite). Naomi helped me with my order, was so nice and packed my donuts neatly. I’ll be back in town next week to try those. I challenge you to make the cruller if you don’t already. Not many places get this texture right. I believe you can! The shop was beautifully laid out and I liked they had donuts showcased front and center! These beauties weren’t going to last the rest of the day. It’s small batches here and not production baking so you get a better experience. The Critique: 5- Excellent quality ingredients used and flavors were exceptional. 5- Not a spot of oil or oil residue in the box even after 2 days! Box was also paper lined. 5- Unique Orange curd filled donut was sumptuous made with fresh orange juice and flecks of orange peel! 5- Perfect crack on the old fashioned 5- Glaze and icings like silk - not gritty 5- Powdered (sugar) perfectly dusted on the donuts and not all over you or other donuts in the box! Subtle coating as it should be! 5- Glazed Raised - Perfect rise and rest time on the fry screens before frying - Wound love to see Crullers (I might have been too late in the day to snag 1) and a Dutch crumb

Google
We had cardigan donuts cater for our wedding and they were absolutely amazing! The Cardigan team was incredibly easy to work with and great and communicating with us throughout the process. Day of delivery was very smooth and the donuts were an absolute hit (we barely had any left at the end of the night) and we had people asking us for weeks after where they can get more!! We would recommend Cardigan for ALL your donut needs!

Google
This is a very personal thing, but the donuts and churros were way too sweet; we couldn’t finish them. Not what we expected. The place was good to sit in and had several free tables. The service was friendly. I wouldn’t buy those again; they’re just too sugary and sweet for me

Google
My go-to for donuts and coffee! They have pretty standard and typical donuts, and then they have two donut specials which rotate out twice a week which make it pretty special. The coffee is good enough that sometimes I'll go here just for the coffee even when I'm not getting a donut. It's a nice chill place to work for a few hours too. And the music they have playing is pretty much always good and suits the atmosphere. The one downside for me is that they only offer cold drinks via delivery through services like DoorDash. The reasoning is that they don't want to serve hot coffee and have it be cold by the time it arrives, but personally I just see that as part of the DoorDash experience and I'd rather have the option than not.

Google
Great donuts at a cozy yet modern interior. It has a bit of the 70s retro feel but they pull it off in a contemporary way. The store is on the 2nd floor of the City Center plaza that is connected to the Marriott. It's sad to see most storefront empty or shut down but Cardigan is running strong. The donuts are fresh and soft. They pull off all the fundamental types well: the old fashioned, cake, as well as the glazed. With great dough, you really can't go wrong regardless of the format. The donuts themselves are not too sweet which is awesome. And yes, those with the bacon bits on top somehow meld well with the rest of the cream and bread. Overall, an all-rounder A-level shop. I wouldn't consider this the absolute very best donuts. But definitely 5 stars based on price, atmosphere, and the value they provide.

Yelp
Cardigan Donuts is an absolute gem! Their old-fashioned donut is a must-try--it's perfectly crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, and bursting with flavor. The old-fashioned with chocolate was hands down my favorite--rich, decadent, and absolutely delicious. The apple fritter was another highlight--crispy, sweet, and so enjoyable. I also tried the blueberry donut, which tasted just like a fresh blueberry muffin--such a delightful treat! While the coffee cake donut wasn't my favorite and not a flavor I'd pick again, it was still well-made and enjoyable in its own right. Overall, the quality and creativity of their donuts are top-notch. I'll definitely be back to explore more of their menu. We were back a few times during our stay for snacking and just because it was so good. The service is exceptional and friendly the moment you walk in the door. The inside is cute clean and cozy with tables and chairs to sit at inside. They were located right off of our hotel and through the skyway so you didn't need to walk outside at all. They did close pretty early around 3pm.

Yelp
Donuts were brought to a department meeting and I was able to try a couple different flavors. The dough of the donuts was delicious. It had a yeasty flavor that does not often come across in the fried donut. These donuts are melt in your mouth soft and had a pillowy texture. I personally am a bigger fan of donuts that have a sturdier an slightly denser texture. Even for donuts I felt these were pretty sweet.

Yelp
Best old fashioned donuts in the city! Don't believe me? Try them for yourself! Some local Minneapolis coffeehouse sell these donuts, but they're best right from their downtown bakery. They have a basic lineup, but create a number of specialty donuts each week. This time I visited and there was death by chocolate, chai coffee cake and so many more! They also make delicious parfait bowls and gourmet coffee drinks. See pics if weren't already feeling hungry! Be sure to get their newsletter and sign up for the birthday club.

Yelp
Delicious! Very well made and they have a huge selection! Got some donuts for a meeting and it was a huge hit! BEWARE that the donuts are made in pork lard (which is on the site)

Yelp
Hands down the best donut in Minneapolis and maybe the best old fashioned I've ever eaten (and I've eaten A LOT of doughnuts). Even though I don't work downtown any more, I make the trip. It's so good it's, a destination!

Yelp
First of all wow, this place is huge. So much space to sit and loved the little fireplace. Really the interiors were just so nice. However we got our donuts to go. I have to say that they had some really fancy seasonals with lots of extras on top of a donut but those really weren't as good as their more basic donuts. One of the seasonal choices I think was a strawberry cheesecake but we really didn't get that cheesecake flavor and it was our least favorite. I also got a kombucha here. Ordering it was a little strange. I asked the staff what the flavor was but instead of telling me they just asked if I wanted to sample it which is great but I'm still not really sure what flavor it was but c'est la vie

Yelp
I've been to Cardigan Donuts both times I visited Minneapolis. Their donuts were amazing! So fresh and tasty. Not overly sugary sweet, soft and light texture. Perfect size, not too small or too large. The flavors we've tried include: glazed cake, blueberry cake, chocolate iced cake with sprinkles, jam filled powdered, cinnamon sugar cake, old fashioned glazed and apple fritter glazed. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the blueberry cake but they were all delicious. The service was great both times as well. The staff members were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back next time in town.

Yelp
My favorite donuts in the Twin Cities. While yes, I feel it's a tad pricey, I also feel it's worth it. I used to stop by a lot more when I lived in the area, which was nice. Especially on the bad weather days when things were slow and they'd offer deals to clear out product. I was once offered a dozen for the price of one. Sadly I declined since I was on a diet and had no business being there in the first place. Their raised & cake donuts are so soft, and moist. My favorites/ recommendations are always the: glazed donuts, glazed old fashioned, powdered, vanilla glazed with sprinkles (raised), French crueller, and anything with coconut That said, everything is delicious so you can't go wrong!

Yelp
I'm not a donut person so to go out and get a few on a whim and say, yeah it's great is a good endorsement. Located inside the IDS tower, Cardigan is a small donut and coffee shop located on the 2nd floor overlooking the main "plaza" inside the IDS tower. Great for a quick bite, they offered glazed and season donuts at a reasonable price. Ordering is standard, you walk up to a cash register and take the order from there. Can't really go wrong with any of them, as none of them are overloaded with sugar at all! I did enjoy that it you can taste the donut without it being overly sweet and overpowering. I did enjoy the apple fritter (the one with the decorated flakes" the most. Overall, good donut spot for a quick bite.

Yelp
The girl at the counter was brilliant, showing how service can make a difference even in a place where you don't need to contemplate the wine list. The fried pickle fritter kept that state fair vibe even as I had to leave town. If you're looking for something less paradigm-shattering but still quirky, strawberry rhubarb is a fine choice.

Yelp
All the donuts were fresh and tasted great. The service was very fast for donuts, but the coffee took awhile. It is a very relaxing and cozy setup they have inside. Plenty of tables and chairs with a couple hangout spots. My only complaint is the location. Not easy to get to unless you live nearby or are going to Target Field, Target Center or work nearby.

Yelp
We used them for our son's wedding! 195 donuts and donut holes! Lilly and the manager Justin were great. Delivery was on time and the set up was perfect! Guests raved about the unique dessert the bride and groom selected. They looked so cute on the peg board. Displayed so nice! Sooo good!! . Thank you! Prady/Diaz wedding

Yelp
Absolutely divine! The strawberry maple French toast donut is 10/10. Great service- super friendly staff and great recommendations.

Yelp
Decided to give in to my love for pumpkin this week ! I don't even like crullers usually so this was a full send. Not overly sweet which was great, the pumpkin pie filling was my favorite part. It was a little soggy, but that might just be a cruller thing. Definitely want to go back and try a donut that I would typically order

Yelp
Easy enough to find inside the building, where it's grouped together with several other businesses. Service was quick for me to grab three donuts to go. It was hard to decide from the selection, but I felt like I chose some good ones. My favorite was the apple fritter. Lots of space inside to eat and chill out for your morning breakfast. Also kind of fun to see the unique flavors out. Not adventurous enough that day to eat the fried pickle fritter!

Yelp
The donuts are amazing! Very light and flavorful! I love to check the donut schedule to see what new flavors are in rotation. Service is always lovely! The staff are very friendly and have great recommendations as far as drinks and other items. The ambiance is very beautiful. Fast and efficient service!

Yelp
Donuts and service great! Coffee too much milk but it was a latte. Shop is located on 2nd level of City Center. The bathroom located in the City Center needed code access.

Yelp
Spent about a week in Minneapolis and I visited Cardigan almost every day! If that doesn't tell you how good it is I don't know what will. Let me start with the good. Fresh brewed intelligentsia coffee for your third wave addiction. Sticky sweet toffee lattes. Smooth and bitter nitro cold brew. Everything on the coffee menu I had was solid. I'm usually a plain black coffee drinker but I branch out occasionally. The drip coffee here is fantastic. Now onto the great. D'oh! The donuts... mouthwateringly delicious donuts. Fresh baked. Still soft and warm. Wow. These are top tier donuts here. Can't ever go wrong with the old fashioned, but they also had a few different fancy donuts I tried. Everything was great. The coffee cake donut was a nice play on a cake donut. Almond bar hit that cream note that I love. Fruit donuts were all delicious. Couldn't pick a favorite as they were all great. 5/5 fast and friendly service. They also offer BYO oatmeal and yogurt bowls. Didn't order one, but it is a nice offering for those trying to watch their donut intake!

Yelp
OMG so good and the prices are affordable. I got the coffee cake donut. Very delicious and not overly sweet. It is on the smaller size but this is great for me because decadent treats are better in small portions.

Yelp
Thank god this place isn't in Las Vegas because I'd be a real naughty girl and end up having a donut or two (or three) a week from this place. I love the fact that people say this place is great and has unique flavors and that that actually turned out to be the case when we came in. We were just walking back to our hotel in the Skyway system when I saw Cardigan and remembered I had read a lot of good reviews while planning our trip to Minneapolis. We weren't hungry but decided to grab 2 donuts each just in case we wanted a snack later. Not only were these donuts good about 8 hours later, but they were good almost 36 hours later (we bought them Friday afternoon and our other two Sunday morning.) How they have donuts that don't taste like they have all the preservatives but are still tender 2 days later, I'm not sure. But whatever it is, I hope they keep it up. We got a cake, a crueller and two yeasted. All had amazing flavor and packed a punch. The person helping us was also really cool and patient with us. We got a donut that would have been hard to shove into a bag and he offered us a box. So sweet. We declined the box but he still packed the fragile donut in last, tucked in so it would stay intact. Just amazing service. My only regret was that we didn't get our coffee here. That was a mistake. Don't make this mistake.
google avatar

Yelp
Came to get some donuts and coffee as my hotel didn't have room available for me as I got there before check in time. Went with a peach rhubarb donut and one with coconut. Butterscotch latte. Donuts were unique and sweet. The coffee definitely woke me up!
google avatar

Yelp
What happens to me way too often is I'll be at a coffee shop in line, then next in line, and the jaded worker completely unaware of subconscious bias well say with great pleonasm "I'll help who's next in line please," and some White person will step in front of me and place an order. If I am feeling uppity I may say something in protest to which I invariably get "I didn't see you." This obviously confirms the unexamined bias. Anyway, here we were at a sociology conference and my White friend butted in front of an Asian man who had been patiently waiting his turn and the barista said, "Sorry, he's next." And took his order. And the barista was a young, white woman. So for this and their totally awesome Italian expresso machine, this place ranks 5 BIG stars from me.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped here on the way to work and picked up donuts for the office. Donuts were great, so was my latte. My only complaint is that they are on the second floor of a mall, and there is no free parking, you have to pay for street parking. Therefore, it is not the most convenient. The service was great and I love their ambiance! They have a cute little table area to work if you wanted to.
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
I've had this place on my list for months and decided to give them a try. Unfortunately a few things fell flat for me and this ended up being more of an average experience. First, unless you are working/staying in the area, you will pay for parking. I paid $8 in a parking ramp close by to come and try these doughnuts. There really isn't an awesome accessible way to get to this shop. There are plenty of restaurants in the area, so may be consider this place for dessert or take home? The ambiance here was lacking for me. I'm not sure if they were cleaning or remodeling but there were chairs missing, a bunch of boxes out on the floor and shelves that were empty. It just didn't feel welcoming. Due to that factor, I took my doughnuts to go. The service was good. The woman who helped me was nice and not over bearing as I tried to decide what flavors to try. I got 4 doughnuts. The strawberry and lemon tasted fried and were FANTASTIC! Very very good! The fillings tasted like they were made from scratch and they just melted in your mouth! The cake based doughnuts were a full miss for me though. The blueberry flap Jack was almost inedible... it states it was topped with a maple butter cream but it just tasted like butter. My kids also tried this and did not like it due to the butter topping. The caramel delight was ok but I wish it had more icing on it. I also didn't love the texture of the doughnut. I had seen so many pictures of beautiful (almost to pretty to eat) doughnuts and I really didn't see that while I was there. Overall, i had to give 3 stars due to location, ambiance and only liking half the doughnuts I got. I would say if you are in the area go ahead and give this place a try. I would not make a special trip out here. I definitely thought the filled doughnuts were the best and worth trying!

Yelp
Cardigan Donuts are some of my favorites in the Twin Cities! I used to work in the PwC building, and they were a staple in my office. For St. Patrick's Day we got a sampler box that was absolutely delicious! The Guinness Chocolate donut holes were amazing, and I wish they were available all year round. We all were munching on pieces of all the different donuts - I would say the key lime pie and normal sprinkle donuts were my favorite! I was also at a wedding last weekend that had a wall of Cardigan Donuts (a dream)! My boyfriend and I shared a sprinkled long John, and it was definitely the best one I've ever had. It was pillowy soft and sweet without being too sugary. Definitely recommend as the best place for a great donut box to bring to the office or any breakfast gathering!

Michael B.

Yelp
Cardigan donuts were a hit at our recent wedding! Guests still talking and raving about how cool and classy the presentation done by Lilly Fisher was at the wedding reception. She was super helpful and confident in helping us decide quantities and popular flavors. She also helped us stretch our dollar which is always a good thing when you are planning and spending $$$ on a wedding! Lastly, one of our guests told us she had a dream about the donuts the night of the wedding, now that's serious lol... Tori and Michael Bratsch, 2024 *** Wedding at Brookview, Golden Valley

Yelp
What else can I say except this place has AMAZING donuts...I went with an Old Fashioned and a Coffee Cake donut and they were both delicious. Best donuts I've had in a long time. Also, their coffee is great, there is a Starbucks two doors down but do yourself a favor and get your coffee at Cardigan.
google avatar

S R.

Yelp
Scrumptious, delicious doughnuts!!!! We bought the Old Fashioned based on other Yelp reviews and the public was right! The doughnuts were amazing. The hot chocolate was delicious as well.
google avatar

Genesis M.

Yelp
First time coming here and I was very impressed with this donut spot! It's very nice in the inside and so much seating is available. I was able to get the Boston cream donut which was so tasty with chocolate on top and a cherry. You can also order bowls with yogurt, granola & fruit which I thought was very unique for a donut spot and on top of that you can also order different teas! I'm not in downtown a lot but if I get the chance to come here again I'll check out their bowl and order a box full
google avatar

Kelly U.

Yelp
At Target Center for an event this morning, found Cardigan in the building across the street in the walkway for loose leaf tea, hot coffee, and a tasty frosted donut. My inner Homer Simpson loves this place. It's in the middle of an office building so it's a stop, not a destination. Nice place if you need a donut shop in the downtown walkway system!
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Absolutely the best donuts m MN!!! I love love love Cardigan Donuts! The Old Fashioned glazed are just amazing. They remind of a donut that you just can't find in Minnesota, buttermilk donuts, they are sooo moist and delicious. However, makes sure you get there before they close, they sell out of the old fashioned donuts often.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're downtown and need of a little treat, cardigan donuts has your back. Everyone I've ever encountered when ordering donuts has been so patient and kind! Clean and beautifully displayed to make every choice an agonizing decision, you have to really have some solid willpower not to buy everything in the case. I'm not typically a donut person but if I get a craving, I know there's only one place to go! It's a bit of a hike but the IDS building is so accessible it's a nice little trek to burn off some of the donut holes I plop into my mouth on the way back to the office!

M S.

Yelp
Like a previous reviewer (Nicole N, from June 2023), I'm not thrilled with the doughnuts in this business. Their business seems based more on hype (they know how to play the marketing game) than an actual good product. I purchased 6 doughnuts, trying for a variety. The chocolate icing they use does not have much chocolate flavor. The underlying flavor of their batter - be it for cake doughnuts, raised doughnuts, or fritters, is pretty lacking, and the texture isn't great either. Some just had an off flavor - maybe it was time to change the oil they're fried in. Their doughnuts LOOK ok, but that's not what I value most in a doughnut. And they're pretty expensive per doughnut. Their location is also not convenient. Unless you need to be in the area for something else, you're going to spend a lot for parking and have a trek to get to this business. They are better than supermarket doughnuts usually are, but those would only get a 1 star.

Tracee T.

Yelp
Placed an order for pick up and was sad to see that 1/3 my order wasn't there because they didn't have the items to make them and their website is showing donuts they don't have anymore but it's still letting you order them. Their customer service was exceptional though. They refunded my whole order even though I said I'd gladly pay for the ones I ordered and received. It was super easy picking them up at FRGMNT Coffee. Even though we got them for take out, I couldn't help but order a coffee and sit in front of the fire place while watching all the dogs that were there, some enjoying a donut as well.

Yelp
After getting lost trying to find this place; eventually found a map that led to the second floor of the center where the shop is tucked away. Large up front counter displaying the many pastry options with no line on a Wednesday morning. Opted to get the half-dozen ($15) box to go. Some favorites: Maple bar - straight forward fluffy base with maple cream filling Apple fritter - thick glaze, apple flavor comes through Old fashioned - most cake and heavy glaze, great balance The others were okay, with the s'more being the most disappointing (dry frosting). Service is quick and they do serve coffee as well. Worth a trip over if you can navigate to the storefront.

Yelp
Excellent donuts, coffee & service. Went twice while in town visiting. Donuts are incredibly flavorful & fresh (even when I went in near closing time) & cold brew is perfect. I love trying the local donut places when in a new city & highly recommend a visit to Cardigan Donuts for anyone who likes to do the same.

Yelp
This place lives up to the hype. Great doughnuts, fantastic coffee and the employees are friendly and accommodating. We went to the location at IDS tower and we did it two days in a row.

Yelp
Disclaimer: this is a retroactive post, so be considerate of the unreliability of memory. Cardigan Donuts is located in a downtown building that has other restaurants and shopping stores. Despite being downtown, their space is pretty big and comfortable. There were long tables and smaller tables for patrons to sit at. The interior design was warm, modern, and homey. It's downtown, so basically street or ramp parking. COVID Precautions: Staff and patrons all had to wear masks. Food was served with disposable utensils (ie, paper plates). There was hand sanitizer accessible, as well as packets of disposable wipes for patrons to use. Tables were arranged to allow for as much social distancing as possible. October 2020: We went after lunch downtown, so it wasn't super busy. The unique aspect of Cardigan Donuts is their "Donut Schedule," which is a menus of various flavors of donuts that are only available for less than a week. This differs from a seasonal menu because not all the donut flavors are brought back, nor do we know when they will be back on the schedule. We tried out several items: - Coffee: they gave us free coffee with our donut purchase! I'm not a coffee connoisseur, so I can't really describe it. It just tasted like regular black coffee. - Jasmine Milk Tea Donut: One of their flavors on the Donut Schedule. It was very very good, and I still check the site occasionally to see when it ocmes back so I can get it again! The jasmine tea cream was delectable. It was very fragrant, yet not too sweet. It paired amazingly with the soft and flaky glazed donut. It was incredible, probably the best flavor of donut I have tried. It was subtle, yet addicting. The one thing I didn't like about this donut was the popping boba (too tart) topping, as I would have preferred regular boba instead. - Churro Roll: I did not like the chocolate sauce as it has a little spice in it. While we were aware that there would be pepper in the sauce, I didn't like how it tasted. It wasn't spicy, there was just a jarring feeling on the taste buds. The donut itself was yummy though, with the taste and consistency of an actual churro. I wouldn't get this flavor again, but it was a unique flavor to try! - Jam-Filled Premium Bismarck (Blueberry Lemon): Another flavor on the Donut Schedule. I was not a fan of this one though. The jam was a little too tart for my taste and it overpowered the sweeter accents of the jam. Because of the tartness of the jam, I felt that there was too much jam and not enough powdered donut to offset the tartness. I ended up scraping some jam out to enjoy the donut more. Overall, a nice donut place with fresh donuts and unique flavors. However, the flavors can be hit or miss. It also is a more expensive donut place ($5-9 depending on the type of donut, with the Donut Schedules being the most expensive), but it is a nice occasional treat.

Yelp
Great service - even when my kids didn't know what they wanted and took time to deliberate. Got a few of the cake donuts and an Apple fritter. Helpful staff, quick service.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing donuts! If you are in the area you need to try at least one. Also at a certain point in the day they are 50% off and you can really load up as I did. Best one I tried was the old fashioned.

Yelp
The rating is based on the 2 donuts I purchased. I just wasnt a fan of these 2 particular flavors. First, the actual donut(s) itself was really good. Fresh and classic tasting. It was the toppings/flavorings that were disappointing. I got the raspberry lemon bar and a peanut butter bar of some sort. Actually, the peanut butter one wasnt too bad. It came with dollops of 2 different flavors. I actually cant recall if there was some sort of cream in it. That's how memorable it was. Now, the raspberry lemon bar had a great raspberry filling. Then you get to the "lemon". Not actually sure what this was. Very artificial tasting. Kind of ruined the donut. I would definitely go back, because I love donuts. But, I think I will stick to the simple varieties next time. Oh, and they are a little pricey, btw.

Yelp
Best old fashioned cake donut I have ever had!! Not a big donut person but heard so many great things that I had to find out for myself.. so glad I did! It's crispy on the outside and the glaze is perfect. I came back and bought two dozen for my work and became the instant favorite. Definitely try!

Yelp
Let's be real, no matter what city I go to, I'll find a local donut shop. Minneapolis did not let me down. Cardigan donuts is located in a mall. Unfortunately the mall still looks pretty shut down, so I was happy to see that cardigan was up & running - and busy. The space is very cute, lots of wood and all of the donuts are nicely displayed. I'm super indecisive, so I looked at everything a million times before choosing, but the woman working was very sweet and patient. She gave me her recommendations. I ended up deciding on the old fashioned (her favorite), the churro donut with a spicy chocolate dipping sauce (immediately reminded of churros con chocolate in Spain, yum!) and an apple fritter. The old fashioned was delicious - light, lemony. One of the better ones I've had, and this is my favorite donut. The churro one was so fun! Light, fluffy, cinnamon sugar that went well with the slightly sweet, slightly bitter, slightly spicy chocolate sauce. Definitely a donut I'd never had before and I was impressed. The bourbon glaze on the Apple fritter was unique and so so good! I just wish it'd had a few more Apple pieces. Next time I'll have to grab some coffee as well. I told all my friends to go check it out and next time I'm in Minne this'll be a definite stop!

Yelp
Cardigan Donuts. Anytime my husband says he brought home some of these bad boys after working downtown, my eyes light up with joy. I love a lot of donut places and I'm fine with a plain old grocery store donut but these donuts are something else. I appreciate the fact that they have rotating specials and make an effort to create unique flavors and types of donuts other places don't have. Can't list the specials off the top of my head but the ones I have tried were scrumptious. My all-time fav from Cardigan is the French Crueller but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Their cake donut for example is dense but rich in flavor and very sweet. We tried an egg nog one as well which I didn't think would be very good but we gobbled it down like it was nothing ! So tasty. Every single filled donut or non-filled one has been delicious. Looking forward to the next time the hubs surprises me with these beauties.

Yelp
Cardigan Donuts is a Minneapolis born donut and coffee shop on the skyway level of the City Center Mall. Owners Jeff Bull and Justin Bedford opened the shop in May of 2017. Located in the Minnesota Central Business District they designed a welcoming environment that was supposed to be the antithesis of the office cubicle. The motto of the shop is "Comfort, Warmth, Welcome." In addition to be surrounded by office towers, it is surrounded by hotels. The City Center Mall that it is in is attached to a Marriott and Embassy Suites by means of skybridges. I stayed in the later for a week. Throughout my travels on the skyway level of City Center, I'd pass the donut display in the window. That display is the liveliest thing in a mall that seems to have its best days behind it (hopefully the situation changes). It was a recommendation from our server at The Local Pub that convinced my brother and I would to it on the last day of the vacation. When we visited it was sparsely busy. That meant zero issue finding a table. I ordered a blueberry cake donut and 12 ounce cup of coffee. Their coffee is Blackeye Roasting Company Donut blend coffee. The donut and coffee came out to $4.50. The donut was good and the coffee was decent. I am not knocking the coffee but my preference favors Starbucks. And Starbuck's just happens to be downstairs. In Las Vegas, I have combined Starbucks with nearby donut shops. With that said, if I lived in Minneapolis or was on vacation and I happened to be in City Center with an urging for a donut, I would combine Starbucks with a Cardigan donut or two.

Yelp
Nicole L. put this on the list for our 30 hour MN trip & I'm so glad we were able to stop in. We went first thing on Saturday morning before the MN state fair. It was a little bit difficult to get to because of all the construction & the Skyway isn't all open this early in the morning. Otherwise, we would've been able to wander through from our hotel. Anyways, when I called the shop to ask for directions, the gal working was super patient and helpful. It was the same awesome service when we arrived. I was delighted to find that there was a AYCE brunch deal - $10.95 for bottomless donuts in-store w/coffee. At $1.95 for classic donuts & $2.75 for premium donuts, it was a no brainer for because I was going to get multiple donuts! STANDOUTS: Anything blueberry! So some context - in Southern California, I used to wait HOURS drive through line at midnight for blueberry donuts served in a pizza box (for my fellow SoCal folks, M&M donuts). I thought those were good, but Cardigan's are EVEN. BETTER. So I was pleasantly surprised. I also ordered the blueberry-filled donut and it was also really tasty. Super soft fresh exterior with NON-artificial tasting blueberry filling. JUST OK: Old fashioned - I'm a bit biased because I feel like Blue Star out of PDX is the gold standard for old fashioned donuts. What I didn't love about Cardigan's was that it was SUPER sweet. There was also a Carrot Cake old fashioned, which sounded like an amazing flavor but I was told it was sweetER. So, I skipped it. French Cruller was good but Zingerman's here in A2 is a smidge better and I can have them on the daily. I also enjoyed the Apple Fritter but it was a bit too sweet for me again. Cardigan's space alone is worth a trip in. Love the midcentury modern meets modern workshop/work bench vibes.
