An Illustrated Guide to Philly Restaurant Dishes Featuring Guava, Peanuts, Curry, and Roti | Eater Philly

"I recommend the curry goat, chicken, or shrimp roti at this South Philadelphia spot—the Trinidadian-style roti wrap stuffed with bone-in meat and potatoes is a hearty handheld meal." - Diana Lu

I ordered the oxtail meal and I really loved the flavor . I haven’t had a good oxtail since I was in Indianapolis at Jamaican Breeze some 3 years ago. I’ve travelled to different states and ordered this dish and this is the first time I was really impressed. A lot of restaurants don’t use the butter beans in the oxtail dish but this place had it which was awesome . The cabbage was okay I wasn’t feeling the seasoning on them. The rice is delicious. The one thing that I didn’t like and I find that a lot of Jamaican restaurants do this is they only gave me two plantain . Now like I said a lot of Jamaican restaurants only serve 2 plantain with the meal but these plantain were very small . I feel like if you’re going to give me the end part of the plantain which is small compared to the middle at least throw in an extra piece . Photo is provided to show what I mean .

Google
I’m quite picky about my Jamaican food. I must say Caribbean Delight understood the assignment. The oxtails were tender, flavorful with just the right amount of gravy, and the cabbage was seasoned to perfection. Beef patty, rice, and peas…everything was delicious. And I had enough left for another meal the next day. Bonus: not as expensive as others I scrolled by. I highly recommend!

Google
It’s hard to find good reasonably priced good tasting food in da A but Caribbean delight provided both this am …. I was a bit skeptical cause da reviews aren’t the best but 2 Saltfish plate for $20ish I said y not n it up there with Footprints, Dougies & Silvercrust …. Thank You for accommodating my request n sub da rice for 2 dumplings … if I could give u a kiss rii now I would made my whole week ty 😘

Google
My two veggie patties were soggy and severely undercooked. Salty I wasted $8 on both they were $4 each . The cabbage was delicious . The patties weren’t worth it .

Google
I order the Curry Goat, Rice n Peas, & Cabbage. I’m eating my food, enjoying it. Then, I come across a GUINNESS BEER BOTTLE CAP and a green hair, lint, sting.. (whatever the hell it is) In my cabbage. UTERLY DISGUSTED. Clearly poor kitchen conditions.

Witma N.

Google
I ordered the chicken stew with yellow rice. The food was tasty, it was jsit too salty whatever seasoning powder that they used was too much especially the chicken. It had sweet and chicken bouillon powder taste. I could feel it on my lips and chest. The patties are good, cabbage and plantains were okay. There was no wait

Just C.

Google
Hands down....flavor os 10/10. I would suggest getting off the cook to order menu if you want your entree to be hot. Although the stewed chicken was cold, I microwaved it and it was great. Cabbage were great too.

Google
Solid classics available late. There’s a few options for Jamaican in the neighborhood, but this one does value and convenience best. Oxtail plate was massive and included cabbage, rice and peas, and a couple plantains. Everything on this plate could have benefitted from a little more cook time. The oxtail, while soft and easily taken off the bone, lacked the depth of flavor and texture that comes from cooking low and slow. The cabbage and rice and peas still had some crunch. The plantains seemed like they hadn’t been allowed to fully ripen. As far as bang for buck, this plate was well worth the price. I got 3 full meals out of it. I wouldn’t order the additional sides of mac and cheese or yams again. The mac is Caribbean casserole-style, basically just pasta and one kind of cheese. The yams seemed like they might’ve come from a can. Also got a spicy chicken patty that was fine, if a little dry/left out too long. I was a little disappointed by the key lime dessert being a cake instead of pie, as the menu gave no indication of which to expect. All in all, I’d give this place a second chance. Sometimes you need a patty and oxtail gravy at midnight, and this place makes it easy to get. 3.5 but let’s round up.

Alex S.

Yelp
delicious oxtail! would recommend. server was very friendly. food came very quickly, within 10 minutes.

Yelp
Caribbean Delight is my go to for oxtails! It is consistently good food, I would suggest ordering ahead, the folks are straight forward when it comes to service. In terms of ambiance it is a pick up and go place. No frills, and no dine in.
google avatar

Latasha B.

Yelp
Would go elsewhere. Cabbage, sweet potato, greens, and plantain were really tasteless. Not giving authentic Jamaican or traditional Jamaican. Wasn't the worst, but definitely there is better Jamaican food
google avatar

Lashundra R.

Yelp
i dont really care for the cabbage and plantain so i didnt want the sides no price change was the same price with or without the sides thought... Definitely worth the money i got a good serving of oxtail rice and peas wouldve gave 5 stars but it seems a bit outdated and a lil ghetto lol but the oxtail rice and peas slap
google avatar

Kristal T.

Yelp
This is walk up restaurant no seating. You order the food and it's all to go. The food I ordered was delicious I got the brown stew snapper which is cooked to order takes about 20 minutes. But worth the wait it was amazing! My friend got the ox tails and she loved them

Letarius H.

Yelp
Don't order through anything but DoorDash. You will never receive your order. Extremely slow service.
google avatar

Angela H.

Yelp
If you are looking for real deal Jamaican food, this is the place! AND they serve breakfast! I am of Jamaican heritage and this is authentic. Check it out! JUST AN FYI, breakfast isn't ready until about 8:30a-9a, even though they open at 6am. Enjoy!
google avatar

Jaron M.

Yelp
Food service and quality never fails! Vibe from the music wait time not too much Cost fair and reasonable other wise cook yourself Don't forget stop by show some love and support !

Laina B.

Yelp
This is my go-to every time I go! Never disappointed. The whole plate is very flavorful, even the rice and pease. The chicken is well seasoned, falls off the bone, and always has more than enough gravy for my rice and peas. The cabbage is well seasoned as well. Not only is the plate flavorful but this is a "medium" size plate, portions are lovely!! And the prices are great!
google avatar

Jade C.

Yelp
Great service, and stays open late! Rare, because most Caribbean spots shut down shop pretty early. There was a bit of a line, but the wait wasn't too long. I really liked that the oxtail pieces were large, kind of fatty though. They give you a lot of rice! Minimal cabbage. The flavor was okay. I'd return for a late night fix, but wouldn't go out my way other than that. I'd like to give them another chance.
google avatar

Beverly R.

Yelp
Seems like the large oxtail plate is a fav. Although, the portion size was great, the meat wasn't tender and flavorful to the bone. I've had better. And, they didn't add the two plantain slices. Since oxtail prices are ridiculous, I'm going to pass on this place and try elsewhere.
google avatar

Kayla W.

Yelp
good food and portions, i always get oxtail or curry chicken both worth the price. .
google avatar

Christina D.

Yelp
OXTAIL me please but from the curry chicken to the oxtail, I want it and it's always delicious and on point. The oxtails are so meaty and juicy and the rice and peas are cooked just the way I like them. Although there's no seating, this walk up location is worth the quick wait and run to the Westside, there's also a small parking lot with a few spots directly in front. The service is always pleasant, food always hot with great portions and flavors that are authentic!

Arrielle K.

Yelp
This place is nasty and rude the food is bland and stale they gave me old over cooked food
google avatar

Yelp
8/18/23 I went for another round after movie night around 10pm; 1 star just for being open for late-nighters wanting good/down home/affordable food in ATL without pretense (IYKYK), 4 stars for food & service. Sauce was on point this time and the beef patties. Grabbed a veggie plate that was really really good. Served hot, they charged for extra sauce eve though I didn't have any on my plate because I asked for it to all be on the side and they don't substitute anytime any of the combos so I has to take corn even though I would have preferred double of any green veggie instead but it was good. Coconut bread was good - a close second to NY, who has thee best- and the jerk chicken was tender juicy wings smothered in sauce per the BF's review. Now, it can get tense in the line- ppl always seem to be on the brink of hangry when they come here lol! The cashier was under pressure from some other clients being pushy after he politely told them they were out of certain things like veggie Pattie's and plantain so I give him extra kudos for keeping calm/being professional! Most likely gonna go back tonight based on the reviews of other places and the food pics of the alternatives. If you want real Jamaican food, made by staff that appear to be of the culture, without having to sit or go thru ATL shenanigans this is the spot. It's in Westside ATL which I love because it's not pretentious or over-rated, it's real community vibes, and just down home like I like it. I'm from SF/Oakland and been bi-coastal traveling 2 yrs and this place is a dependable go-to. Nothing fancy and priced just right with large portions. Sent others here and everyone has said it's a go!

Dwight L.

Yelp
Flavor and portions are beyond great always tastes fresh some of the most authentic Jamaican food I had in a min

Yelp
I'm pleasantly surprised, and will definitely be ordering again. We ordered through grub-hub on Saturday night for delivery, my sister and i were craving Caribbean food and did not feel like driving to memorial drive for our old faithful. We took a chance and it was worth it - the food arrived hot and the portions were generous. The oxtail phenomenal. It was tender, savory and well seasoned - the plantains were just ripe and fried correctly with no excess oil. The curry chicken was delicious, medium spice, right amount of heat - juicy chicken and plenty of gravy. The reviews may be accurate for interacting with the associates, but our experience was superb. I'd recommend giving it a shot.

Yelp
Ate oxtails 5 years ago and it was the best Jamaican food I've tasted in Atlanta tried the stew chicken this time and still the best tasting Jamaican food I've had in the Atlanta area

Charles J.

Yelp
I ordered of UberEATS and the food was still hot!! I got the oxtails and the stew chicken and both were fire. The portions are big too.

Isaac Reno-Benjamin W.

Yelp
Customer service :5/5 it might take a minute for the food but they look out ! Location:4/5 it's a small parking lot in front of the store but parking across the street at the mall Food:5/5 Beef patty ( flaky, chewy and nice balance of savory and spice) Rice and peas with stew gravy
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
Covid-19 score = F. No gloves, no mask, no social distancing. No protection against people coming in and touching things (a couple came off the streets and rifled though the carry out bags). They look to be understaffed, I didnt see anyone for at least 5 minutes. Three other people waiting. A glimpse at the kitchen was enough to see it was a mess back there, with equipment laying about, and open food. Poor place is a nighmare right now.

Yelp
What a gem! My husband and I have been living in SW Atlanta for over a year now and drive down Lee street basically everyday. Never thought this little hole in the wall cooked up such good food! Our friend recommended it and now we hope we can encourage you to check it out. Los Guidry's Thoughts and Recommendations: - Carry Out/Take Out is best! Caribbean Delight is very small and only has 2 tables. Most people that come here know that your order will be to-go so just be prepared! - No frills, no nice decor. Just straight up great Jamaican food. I know we like to go out to eat at nice restaurants but this place is not that. You come here for the good authentic food. Just letting y'all know! - Fooooood! My husband ordered the curry chicken and I ordered the jerk chicken. Both meals came with rice, a side of cabbage and sweet plantains. Man, it was so good! The flavors of the chicken for both dishes and the rice was amazing!!! We ate that food in silence haha. And please please try a Jamaican beef patty (or 3). Those things are addicting! - They have a variety natural juices. We tried the Sorrel drink- a hibiscus tea with a hint of ginger. So refreshing! Overall, I am beyond impressed with the food from Caribbean delight. My only complaint and reason for deducting a star is the parking situation. Unfortunately there are maybe 7 parking spaces and they're shared with the other businesses on this little strip. We had to drive around and park on the street. I hope this review helps!

Yelp
Update 12/12/2019 I feel embarrassed. I don't want to reveal my age . I was today's old when i tried OXTAILS for the first time . Omg , why did i wait so long? Yelp have mixed reviews about the oxtails . Based off the comments , they said CD oxtails is ok . So you telling me , i can find some that taste better ? I couldn't believe my taste buds . Shouts out to the fellow Yelper for helping me with the recommendation.
google avatar

Jamyria C.

Yelp
I ordered the oxtails on Uber eats and there is what looks like a worm in my food! I'm literally in shocked !
google avatar

Lucky S.

Yelp
Cooked right every time and I live in California but I stop every time I come thru the ATL

Duvie's B.

Yelp
coming from a Jamaican this food is super bland, the cabbage has no flavor, the rice was decent but definitely had better. And as far as the oxtail the cook need a new recipe. Sauce is too thick and too much pimento seed. oh and you don't even get plantains with a $35 meal like every Jamaican restaurant does. Lol definitely won't be ordering again lol
google avatar

Ayanna R.

Yelp
One of the best Jamaican places to get oxtails. From ordering on Uber Eats to coming in the customer service and food is good! Can't remember the guy name is the front but he has a decent southern accent, he's always pleasant and very welcoming! I got my boyfriend hooked on the oxtails he loves them just as much as I do
google avatar

jaseim m.

Yelp
I've only ordered food here via uber eats bc i got uber one but idk why the reviews are bad bc i never had a problem..... I get oxtails rice & peas and a beef patty every time i order
google avatar

Ebony M.

Yelp
I placed an order through door dash for brown stew shrimp, white rice and cabbage. I received curry shrimp with rice and peas with the cabbage missing. My husband ordered curry goat and it looks like brown stew goat. The door dash driver missed my exit and had to turn strong and got stuck in traffic so my food ended up being cold. Just Awesome!
google avatar

Halleberry H.

Yelp
So this is coming from a Jamerican. I ordered through uber eats and the portion was good. the oxtail gravy was really thick and sort of sweet (did not like) and the rice was not that good. i feel like a basmati rice or jasmine rice is better. the cabbage was not seasoned but the gravy made up for it. i did not like the consistency of the oxtail or the slight sweet tint. also, a lot of fat was on the meat, not a lot of actual meat. 3 stars because i was starving and i could hold it down but i probably wouldn't order oxtail from here again. will try a different dish though.

Ashley I.

Yelp
Maaan...I haven't eaten here in a while; but they did not disappoint!! Food was delicious as always. Escovitch Tofu-chef's kiss! Jerk was good as well. $15 for a healthy portion. Great options for. Evans & vegetarians. Can't wait until my next plate
google avatar

Joseph R.

Yelp
Ordered the goat and oxtails, with a beef patty and coco bread. Sadly, the meat was super tough and chewy for both the goat and oxtail. It was alright flavor, but kinda bland and no heat. the coco bread wasn't that good either. bland, like no coconut taste or yeast taste. I wish they had make the crust browner. the cabbage side was so damn good though! the rice and peas were nice as well. The beef patty was alright. Kinda disappointing. The flavor just wasn't there.
google avatar

Monique H.

Yelp
I love the oxtails! And the cabbage was wonderful mac & cheese so good. I was skeptical about ordering oxtails through DoorDash but it worked out wonderfully. Give it a try you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
This Jamaican food was the worse I ever had in my life!! The jerk Taste like bean juice And that oxtails sauce was sweet and taste like Bean juice. And not peas beans juice from pork and beans I had warm cool aid with no tops. They didn't have nomore ice or tops to the drinks. I was in the toilet with the runs.
google avatar

Melissa J.

Yelp
Official ... Haile I Selassie on the wall You know it's real . I'm funny about my food so I can't comment on that . I'm guyanese I cook my own food . But overall the patties !!!!! Can NOT be beat !!!! Parking is a bish.... Just doordash if u can . I like these people here K got good vibes always .. wuu it DJ you guys success always !

Marci J.

Yelp
I ordered jerk chicken , collard greens and rice . The collard were literally swimming in juice. there was not even a solid scoop in my order . The rice was cold and the jerk chicken was tender and extremely spicy . If you like spice the chicken is perfect ! But , beware of ordering through Uber eats , there was nothing I could do at the time .
google avatar

Kiki V.

Yelp
I ordered from here for the first time, based on the reviews, and was disappointed. I was really looking forward to the macaroni and was shocked when I opened the container. The macaroni looked as if it was straight out the box with the Kraft powder mix and all, no cheese and no seasoning added to it. I thought maybe it would taste better despite the look, nope tasted AND looked like the Kraft macaroni out of the box. The cabbage was just plain boiled cabbage, no seasoning, rice was watery. I don't understand the reviews, at all. The plantains was also not sweet like nicely ripened plantains usually taste. The stew chicken was the only thing seasoned and tasted good, seriously. Spent close to $20 and it just wasn't good. Won't be going back. Disappointed :(

Allie K.

Yelp
I love this restauran! the food is delicious the portions are huge and the gentleman at the counter is the sweetest person! I highly recommend the jerk chicken patty and Stew chicken! Carribean Delight it is well worth it! and the red velvet cake is awesome!

Egypt R.

Yelp
I hate to leave a bad review on a black owned business... but this food is not up to par and definitely not worth the money! I ordered the oxtails and I don't know what Jamaica these people are from. This food taste like a Caucasian woman took a Caribbean cooking class. They tried but unfortunately they missed. All the good reviews are from people who never had REAL Caribbean food trust me.

Karen C.

Yelp
I ordered 3 times in 1 week through post mate. The jerk chicken is seasoned & tender. Oxtails tender. Rice & Peas good. Side of Plantains soft & sweet. I see people saying that the cabbage doesn't have seasoning, but with all of the jerk sauce and etc. why would you want cabbage to be over seasoned I thought it was delicious and clean.

Justin W.

Yelp
My friend recommended this little spot to me. I only got one thing to say: DAMN GOOD JERK CHICKEN
google avatar

Abby D.

Yelp
The reviews here aren't reflective of the food whatsoever. We ordered jerk chicken, curried chicken, rice, cabbage, collards, plantains, fries and two chicken and two beef meat patties for half what we would have spent elsewhere. The proportions are fantastic and the flavors slap. Get on with it! Parking isn't great, but figure it out. It's worthy of your time.

Alex A.

Yelp
I know people say this all the time but I'm seriously only leaving one star because I have to! I will never order food from this place again and you shouldn't either! To give context, I am a Caribbean woman and it's extremely hard to find good Caribbean food. Normally I'd just cook it myself but today I decided I would choose a resturant from Uber Eats. I am plant based, I do not eat meat and I have not for over 2 years. I ordered the "tofu" and chose "stew" as my gravy. It looked good, I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I ate a few bites and it wasn't all that. My third bite tasted weird, the texture was partially tofu but also had a meaty texture, which threw me. I inspected the tofu deeper, which resulted in me carefully picking through the plate and what did I find? MEAT! What in the entire ****!?? So from what I can only assume, whom ever made my dish used the gravy from an already cooked pot of stew chicken and poured it on top of the tofu. I am appalled. I am upset. I'm mortified. Like I probably ate a piece of meat. My stomach is about to do cartwheels and maybe I'm exaggerating but I wouldn't be in this position if the resturant had morals and respect for peoples dietary restrictions. The plant based lifestyle is heavily respected in the Caribbean so I don't know who you all have in the kitchen but they need to be fired. Better yet shut the whole place down because y'all are disgraceful!!!!! I have never had this problem before but at this point I'm not going to any more restaurants that also serve meat.
google avatar

Ahmed B.

Yelp
Good food good service. Food needs a little bit more flavor. Not too spacious inside.
google avatar

Ikon I.

Yelp
I ordered from this place through Uber eats, and the food was disgusting to the point I had to throw it away. Never had jerk chicken that taste like ginger , the sweet plantains were hard and tasted like oil. I'm never ordering from this nasty ass place ever again, they're lucky I don't live close enough because I would've went to the restaurant and threw my food at whoever is working there.
google avatar

Philana S.

Yelp
The food is not good at all! If I could give no stars I would! We ordered 2 orders of the Curry Chicken w/ rice&peas, cabbage, and plantains. Instead we received 2 orders of what tasted like regular chicken & gravy with no curry or the other seasoning that are used to make this dish, bland cabbage, and I guess their version of rice & peas. This tasted NOTHING like Jamaican food! I'm upset that I wasted my money! We will not be returning!
google avatar

Asia D.

Yelp
It was so bomb omg. I walked in and ordered and had my food in less than 10 minutes which I've never experienced before. 10/10 would recommend honey. I got the jerk chicken w/ rice and peas and cabbage

Janelle J.

Yelp
I'm not from this area so definitely had much much better Jamaican food.. my rice was salty and portion size are a bit smaller than what I'm accustomed to
google avatar

Terri P.

Yelp
Terrible. Was not Jerk chicken. Hot bbq shredded chicken maybe. The cabbage was not seasoned at all. Unflavored Rice and peas. They only took cash, exact change. I will never go there again.
