On the Grid : Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA

"If you don’t win acceptance at Cherokee Town and Country Club, you still have options for fitness and club-like socialization. Specifically, the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead is a remarkable deal. Curled in a leafy nook where Moores Mill meets the interstate, it has all the weightlifting things you’ll need, plus full-court basketball, tennis courts galore, fitness classes, an indoor track—Jesus, they’ve even got a hot tub, a sauna, and a steam room. AND: To complement the indoor lap pool, an outdoor pool is open during the summer, and it includes a two-story twisty slide that is from the land of kid (and dad) dreams. The architecture lets in ample light and leaves room for motivational signs and views of the trees. And they’re expanding!" - Office of Brothers

This is a fantastic gym. I had a poor perception of the Y based on media and this place has completely turned that around for me. Front desk is kind and helpful and every instructor has made the classes feel welcoming and inclusive. It is a very nice facility which feels much cleaner than my local la fitness. Special shootout to the swim teacher Henry Munford for being patient and adaptive.

Google
Julian and Marilyn are excellent team members. They are always professional and cordial. The entire front-desk staff and swim instructors are fantastic. Open swim always has lanes available and members are always gracious in allowing me to share a lane with them. The women's locker room is always very clean and supplies are stocked.

Google
I love the Y at Moores Mill! There is adequate equipment to do everything in my workout routine, it's conveniently located, parking is easy and the staff is so incredibly kind. I particularly love having the Peloton bikes and all of the beautiful new weight floor equipment. If anything were to improve, I'd expand the space dedicated to stretching. I have yet to participate in a class, so can't comment there. The gym and locker rooms are clean, which I also appreciate. I'm looking forward to playing tennis and taking advantage of other amenities when it warms up.

I love the Carl. E. Sanders YMCA. The staff is so wonderful and helpful. They have a wide variety of courses for everyone from children to adults. The pool is wonderful and the gym is nicely equipped. Shout-out to Julian at the reception for always being so nice and making an effort to know our names, also to Shey for accommodating my special needs son. A shout-out also to Gunnar Misha and Kristel who are also doing a great job. Overall I absolutely love it and recommend it.

Google
Super clean and bright spaces in a safe, friendly, and encouraging environment make for a pleasant exercise environment. I have utilized “coach approach” and I’m so thankful for the guidance after a hiatus from working out.

Google
I am enjoying the Y more than the past 9 years I spent at Windy Hill Athletic Club. I can work out here WITHOUT people sitting on machines viewing social media. The staff is super friendly and helpful here. Plus, many workout classes are available that vary intensity based on skill/age.

Google
I've been working out at this facility for over a year now. It's always clean, lots of equipment to work out. They have everything you need to get your body in shape. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools, hot tub, sauna, steam room, tennis courts, walking track, basketball courts, running group, a variety of classes. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Coaches to coach you on your journey.

Google
This is an incredibly run facility. The staff is great. The programming is well thought out and there are several hour-long strength and cardio programs designed for seniors that are perfect for the needs of my wife and me.

Yelp
I have met some great people here! From the members to the staff, everyone is friendly and make you feel welcomed. I always take advantage of the sauna especially on days I feel too tired to walk a 1hr on the treadmill. I love the tennis courts! The outside areas is spacious and I just might come back to take a tennis class because of that. Every-time, I came here I felt safe and able to get a good workout. Hope you in joy too!

Yelp
Great front desk team! They're amazing and kind to everyone. Newest machine equipment and a lot of them too, which is nice when it gets crowded. Only one rack of free weights! Not a problem really, but it just gets crowded around them easy! Love the place and excited to continue there.

Yelp
A week ago if I'd have written this review it would have garnered more stars. There's always plenty of parking, the evening staff is particularly friendly and attentive and this Y offers the best Gentle Yoga classes this side of the Mississippi. (Shoutout to Janice and Keturah!) The equipment (including three fancy Peleton bikes) is new and spread out so you're not on top of each other working out. They even have plastic partitions between a lot of the cardio machines. The facility is also clean, five stars all around. But unfortunately, this Y, like all Metro Atlanta YMCA's will no longer require members to wear masks as of May 18, 2021. They also won't be asking COVID pre-screening questions anymore, despite having the technology to do so. Only 29% of Georgians are vaccinated. If you look at the vaccination data by race, the numbers are even worse. As of 5/11/21, the CDC reported that race/ethnicity was known for just over half (55%) of people who had received at least one dose of the vaccine. Among this group, nearly two thirds were White (63%), 13% were Hispanic, 9% were Black, 6% were Asian, 1% were American Indian. It's common knowledge that minorities are disproportionately impacted by COVID. But no matter what race you are, the Y should take basic safety measures to protect it's members. The new policy is listed below: "Dear Y Members, As a follow-up to Friday's email regarding the CDC's mask recommendations and the Y's policy please see the guidelines below we will be observing at all Y facilities. Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18th, the YMCA of Metro Atlanta will no longer require members to wear masks while in our facilities, with exceptions of our Play Centers and common areas where youth under the age of 12 congregate indoors. Our hope is that, while mask-wearing at the Y is now recommended but not required, members who are not yet vaccinated will continue to wear a mask while in the Y, as an expression of courtesy and respect for fellow members. Additionally, all Y staff will continue to wear masks and will comply with COVID safety checks before entering Y facilities. YMCA COVID Safety Protocols - May 18th Masks are not mandatory for fully vaccinated members. For members 12 and over, who are not yet vaccinated, masks are highly recommended while in our common areas. For members 11 and under, we will continue to require masks in our common areas, as this group cannot currently get the vaccine. For members taking part in Play Center offerings, masks will be required. All members will continue to have their temperature checked before entering a Y facility The health pre-screen questionnaire is no longer required to enter the Y facility." The health pre-screen questionnaire is no longer required to enter the Y facility. We wish to thank you for your ongoing patience and cooperation as we continue to navigate this evolving landscape, and for helping us maintain a welcoming, safe and healthy environment for all."

Yelp
Originally built as a town club, this facility conveniently located just off I-75 @Moores Mill Rd, was a great acquisition for Metro Atlanta YMCA. Most staff here is steady over years. The fitness staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Class instructors are well versed. The janitorial staff maintains the interior and pool deck at a high level. The wooded campus includes lots of courts for the tennis crowd. Weight machines are serviced and maintained regularly and space has been made for currently expected additional machines. Basketball is big here and the gym floor is resurfaced yearly after summer camp. As with all Y's, it's a family vibe, but muscle dudes also get their workouts in here. See the schedule for plentiful class offerings including Zumba, yoga, abs, etc., karate, swim lessons and swim team for the kids, and sessions for older members (you'll see all ages here).

Yelp
Has been my Y for 5 years. Great facility and staff, and amazing group exercise instructors.

Yelp
The Colonel Sanders YMCA should obvi be in freaking Kentucky, but no, it's misplaced, right here in the A T L. Access to this YMCA is limited and difficult because of the road that (barely) gets to it and the busy neighbourhood, and the parking lot - but it's a really good facility even though it does get definitively overcrowded. I prefer the one up in Dunwoody but I would definitely work out here again probably will on many occasions. And remember, you can Landa plane but you can't Landa tlanta.

Yelp
I love this place. It's open floor plan. Has awesome machines. Customer service is awesome. They have a great referral plan. Coffee in the morning. An awesome daycare for the kiddos. They have great classes from yoga to tennis to cycling etc. the teachers are great. This place really makes me want to go back. I have gained so much motivation it makes me so happy to be apart of a gym family again. I was referred here by a friend and I'm so grateful for them because of their awesome referral price. Thank you so much for this location which is right off of 75 or you can drive down Moore's mill and it's accessible from so many places. Don't be fooled by the Buckhead name you get the service the machines and the awesome service under the. Ymca name! Get here!

Yelp
The Aquatics Director Shae at this location has terrible communication and management skills, doesn't return emails (I sent 2), and can't hire enough quality swim instructors. They changed my son's swim lesson class from 4 to 4:30 and I was never notified. This time change was due to their lack of available instructors. The first 2 classes out of an 8 class block were cancelled (due to no instructor) and we haven't been notified when they will make up the class or prorate us a refund for the missed classes. High school students are notoriously flakey and should not be hired as swim instructors if they can't make it to teach the class on time. Do NOT book swim lessons here. They are unorganized and unprofessional. I haven't even mentioned that they canceled my older son's swim lessons 3 days before the class started, leaving me no time to find an alternate location. Avoid this place at all cost.

Yelp
The management there is terrible the website will not update the schedule and you get there its a whole new schedule especially the basketball gym. I also have a problem with the employee Corey he will show ignorance and act Like he owns the place

Yelp
PLEASE BE WARN THEY ARE NOT DISINFECTING GYM MACHINES CORRECTLY!!!!! This facility has stop doing the proper way of cleaning to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Stay away! Disinfecting spray use for machines SMELLS LIKE WATER!!!! SEEN ROACHES IN RESTROOM!!!! This place doesn't keep the guidelines and not making sure people are wearing mask. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

Yelp
From a tennis standpoint -- from facilities to the teams themselves -- Carl Sanders YMCA continues to disappoint. This past Saturday, we were the visiting team and my partner experienced a ruptured tendon during a match. When I ran the near-half-mile to the front desk asking for a first-aid kit, they looked at me like I had nine heads. One gal said she'd go get a kit and bring it to the courts, she never did. the second gal pointed me to the ice machine and went on with her business. I insisted she give me a plastic bag I saw in her drawer, and she seemed insulted by my pushiness. I grabbed the bag, filled it with nasty ice in the ice maker, and ran back to the courts. Turns out that my partner is scheduled for tendon surgery, so it was a very serious matter that they brushed off as nothing. How is it possible that a YMCA facility, one that hosts ALTA and USTA matches all the time, can be so unprepared for a medical situation? We'll leave that question out there. Secondly, and on a more personal note, I don't get all the douchebaggery that goes on at this facility with their tennis teams. Seems to attract the underbelly of Atlanta's competitive tennis scene ("WATCH ME PARTNER!" as our opponent would yell out before every point his partner was serving - seriously?), and the clay courts are generally kept in subpar shape. This facility needs to revamp their service to the tennis courts - especially in emergency situations - because it feels like we're in Timbuktu when we're playing. I gave them a two-star rating only because the facilities are nice -- it would have merited a one overall.

Great expansion and renovation. New equipment. New Studios. Great friendly staff and instructores.

Yelp
This is a great YMCA! It's well-run, maintains good hours, and has the friendliest staff you'll ever meet. I go multiple times per week, and I've never had a bad experience. I haven't used all of the amenities, but I have used the gym and played basketball. The basketball court is big enough for multiple half court games. The gym is really nice as well. They recently renovated, so it has plenty of machines, free weights, treadmills, and ellipticals. If you're looking for a good, affordable gym, then I highly recommend this location!

Yelp
Underwhelmed and marginally disappointed. Well at least the staff is friendly and helpful. So for the record I am an away member which means I am a member outside of the Atlanta market. The sign in process was painless which can be difficult at some locations. So a little back story I came here to lift and get a great pump since my hotel gym was for people that want to just say they workout. Free weights: I have had more weights at hotel gyms before. This was the most dissatisfying segment on the whole campus. Cardio machines: plentiful and high quality. Between these machines and the staff are the only reason it got two stars. Add ons: no English or breakfast tea. I like to get caffeine before my workout and at every other Y I have been to this hasn't been a problem.

Yelp
This review is for the tennis facilities only. Their tennis clinics for adults were of interest to me because when I saw the flier, they were $15 / person, or $20/ person for non-YMCA Members (I'm not a member). I gotta say, the customer service I received was pretty poor, but I think my timing was off too. They were changing around their tennis program as well as their website so I got lots of misinformation. So now, if you're NOT a member of YMCA, you can't participate in the tennis clinics. Well you can, but you have to pay a "program fee" of $30-$35, monthly, in order to participate. On the plus side, YMCA member / Tennis Program members now have some cool benefits- the ball machine costs only $5 / hour to rent. Also, the tennis courts have online self-booking which is nearly unheard of in the Atlanta tennis community. The clinic I did (maybe 8 months ago) was okay. The pro made it a point to learn everyone's names and give individual instruction. It seemed like the people who did the clinic were regulars, so it's probably a great way to meet people or at least find some tennis buddies. I returned to the Y on Monday for a T2 match. The courts were okay but once it started raining, we realized the squeegees were not in the best condition. They could really use some improved equipment. One thing I don't like about the Y and tennis is that you have to enter through the main area and then go off to the tennis area (to the left). If you're there for an "away" match you will be totally clueless as to how to get to the courts. For the amount of courts they have, it's not exactly a friendly place to play. Overall- I don't like the setup of the courts, the facility, and the tennis area, but the benefits- specifically online court booking- makes it a great option.

Yelp
I've been a member for for over a year. I only use the tennis courts, though the rest of the facility is really top notch; including swimming pool (indoors and outdoors), fitness center, indoor basketball courts, and of course kiddie events and facilties (eg. babysitting). The tennis courts and the pros are what makes me keep my membership.

Yelp
I liked this place, but they sure do need to expand (and I see that they plan too). The people at the front desk were very nice the both days that I came by here, and you get the feeling that this is truly a YMCA that caters to all members of the community. The weight room, however, is extremely crowded and needs to be at least twice as big! I did notice the several tennis courts they have, which is great since the weather allows people to be outside for a large portion of the year. And the outdoor pool with slide looked very fun. For those who don't want the outdoor pool, they do have an indoor option. I was surprised that they only have a two-court basketball court. I imagine it gets very crowded, especially if they have any league or kids' games going on, but perhaps there are other indoor courts in the area. If at least the weight room expands, this will be a five-star facility.

Yelp
I go to the classes here and they're amazing. They have so many: yoga, barre, pound, strength, HIIT, cycling, etc. It's a really nice facility, the staff is friendly, and the instructors give you a great workout.

Yelp
Love this facility. I am an away member and am always greeted with a smile by the friendly staff. Very clean, great group fitness classes and instructors are excellent.

Yelp
The renovation is everything. So many machines, Trx, love the track, all the class your heart can desire

Yelp
The Buckhead YMCA is the best. Sure, the parking is a problem when it gets crowded but I have always been able to find a spot. Good news is they are renovating and will be building extra parking! I absolutely love the work out instructors and the wide list of classes. I have tried Zumba, power yoga, hatha yoga, Pilates, beginners Pilates, and dance remixx. It is so much fun! The people who come here are very nice and the staff is great. Shout out to Ephesian who is super friendly and always greets me and my husband. I pay like $70 a month for my husband and I together but it is so worth it when you think about how much classes like pure barre cost. PLUS, there is an awesome farmers market on Tuesdays that sells fresh food that is in season. Come on now.

Yelp
Not good.. the cardio and weight area are so close that i could spot somebody while on the eliptical.. the stafff are okay but its seems like everything is set up for swimming and the tennis chicks.. The tennis situation is very much buckhead wives kinda of deal. The offer nothing fof children over the age of 7... Had to quit my son actually likes playing basketball and the consensus among the powers to be is that no one can actually play basketball on the basketball court.. its only for whatever event they have goin..

Yelp
This is the second year that I've been taking my toddler to this Y for swim lessons. We're not members of this Y - we go just for Saturday morning swim class. We don't have cards to sign in at the front - just down the stairs to the pool, and check in with them there. I like that there are 6 family changing rooms, so that I have a private space to change my toddler, even when I've got my infant and lots of stuff in tow. We participated in the parent&child class last year, and this year, C is in the Pike class, meaning he's in there with just 5 other kids and the instructor, learning to do more on his own. The classes are 30 minutes. There's space in the hallway outside the pool area to watch from behind the windows. It's easy enough to sign up online for the classes. And they do a good job of sending reminders/notices to your email concerning breaks in the schedule (no regular classes the weekends of Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc). However, the classes are small, and they fill up fast. Don't assume because you're in one session that you'll be able to get into the next session! We learned this the hard way, and consequently, will be doing the next session at a different Y.

Yelp
I've been a YMCA member for going on 6 years now. The Buckhead Y isn't my "home" Y, the East Lake one is, but what I love about the Y is you can pop into the metro Atlanta Y's with your card and check out classes or facilities there! My girlfriend lives near the Buckhead YMCA, I live near the East Lake YMCA, and we try to make a few spin classes a week, alternating between the two facilities for the instructors and classes we want! The buckhead YMCA has great pool facilities with an indoor lap pool and an outdoor zero entry pool with slides and fountains for the kids! The buckhead YMCA also has tennis courts, where as the East Lake doesn't! The cycling instructors at the buckhead Y are off the chain. And unlike the East Lake YMCA, you have to call ahead the day before the class you want to attend, and get your name on a list. Like EARLY the day before because they fill up! Also if you are 5 minutes late to the spin class and your name is on the list, they will bump you for someone who is on the wait list! So just FYI, if you want to take a body pump or spin class at Buckhead, it's a bit of a process getting your name on the list, get there early not late, etc! The East Lake Y doesn't have this issue, as you can just show up to the classes you want and spin your little butt off! That said, the few instructors I've had at the Buckhead Y, have been really good, I haven't seen any of the idiotic pushups on the bike, or weight lifting with little baby weights on the bike during class, which I think is just stupid. I lift kettlebells for weight lifting, lifting a 3 lb dumbbell over my head while I spin is just stupid IMO. Overall the buckhead YMCA is a great facility, but also know it's operating at capacity with the popular classes taking some prep work in waking up early and signing up for the class the day prior, and don't be late!

Yelp
We've been members of this Y for almost 2 years now. We love playing tennis, especially taking lessons from the pros. The gym itself is nice, nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. The swimming pool is nice in the summer, but prepare for tons of kids. My favorite part of the gym is the group cycling (spinning) classes. They have phenomenal instructors.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place got bad reviews. It is obviously not regulars. The equipment is nice. Yes it could be larger but it's not intended to be Gold's Gym.

Yelp
Terrific facility, friendly staff, great tennis courts (both clay & hard court), clean, well kept and lots of activities!

Yelp
This one is super crowded always. You have to sign in to use the cardio equipment, plus you have to wait because the cardio machines are always in use(every single one), the child care is super crowded and the parking is awful. With two toddlers in tow I don't want to have to hike it from the back of the parking lot. Switched to a different facility and much happier.

Yelp
Great facility for the entire family. You cant beat the family membership price. If you like doing the classes like Zumba and yoga, cycling, they have plenty of convenient times available, the out door pool is very nice, it has a big slide which the kids love. Mornings get a little crowded but I have never had to wait very long to get on a treadmill. The circuit training machines are cool if you want to track your workouts you can log in and it will give you a monthly report. They have free weights as well which my teenagers like to use, and an indoor track and indoor pool. They do use the basketball courts for some of the children's programs but most of the time they are open to anyone who wants to play. Locker rooms are very clean and roomy, the only complaint is that its hard to shave there because the sinks hot water doesn't work very well, so I have to shave in the shower. The towels are a bit small so you may want to bring your own . I don't play tennis but the courts look like they are in great shape. They also offer personal trainers for no additional charge, they will work with you on your goals. Over all great place.
