The Best Restaurants in Eugene, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Emigrating from El Salvador in 2013, the family behind Carlito’s gave up their day jobs and embarked on a culinary journey to establish a lasting food cart staple in Eugene. Carlito’s, which has outposts on West 6th Avenue and off Chambers Street, is the spot for fresh, toasty Salvadoran pupusas filled with melty cheese and everything from loroco to chicharron. Each order comes with a crispy and vinegary cabbage curtido and a side of sauce, mild or spicy (Hot tip: the spicy ain’t that spicy). The menu also features some Mexican items like tacos dorados, burritos, nachos, and sincronizadas. Each spot features a covered area with lots of patio tables for alfresco eating." - Brenna Houck

Google
Love their pupusas, the pollo con queso is definitely their best. The crispy burrito was not crispy and the flautas was nothing resembling a flautas, but we will definitely return for the pupusas! The service is very friendly and the outdoor seating is great.

Google
Update: still my go-to for pupusas in Oregon. Authentic, delicious, reasonably priced, sauce hot enough to make your lips burn ❤️‍🔥 This is the second time I've been to Carlitos and it was just as good as the first. I highly recommend both the bean and cheese and pork, bean and cheese pupusas. Be sure and get the cortido to top but be very very VERY careful with the hot sauce... it's truly spicy even for those who love spice. I recommend mixing it with the "El Salvador" sauce. I think it was the owner himself who served us this time and he was super sweet, even letting me practice my rusty Salvadorian Spanish.

Google
I stop there a least once every two weeks, the prices are excellent, great, fast and friendly service. And I don't have words to Describe the delicious flavor of Those pupusas, definitely best in town

Brittany Holloway

Google
Searching for some good food in the area and came across Carlito’s Pupuseria so my friend and I decided to give it a try! We didn’t realize it was a small food truck stand but even late into the evening it was nice and cozy. I ordered the stead dinner and a cheese pupusa and it was phenomenal! The steak flavor was to die for, but the cheese pupusa? I’ll be go back for more.

Google
I found this place many months ago and can’t stay away. I have gotten hooked on the chicken pupusas with the pickled slaw. It’s always so fresh and delicious

Krystal Nelson

Google
This place is delicious!! I got the tortas and my husband got a wet burrito and they were both very much worth the price!

Joseph Frank

Google
This place is disgusting and dishonest. The stink of rancid fat was the only thing I could smell. I couldn't get a straight answer about prices and was charged more than the listed prices. Cherry on top this place is run down and looks like the junk pile of a car repair shop. Stay away.

UPDATE: Carlito's will make their vegetarian burritos dairy free! I love this place, but my daughter is sensitive to milk products, so I asked on a whim if he could do it and they are quite delicious! I, of course, still order the normal huge burrito, but I will still gladly finish even the dairy free burritos. Carlito's Pupuseria embodies everything I look for when eating out. They are local, friendly folks that hand make everything and charge you a fair price for it. I'm a vegetarian, so I opt for their vegetarian burrito every time I go ($6 gets a HUGE burrito), and in my opinion it is the best burrito in town. Now I don't claim to have eaten everywhere (my food budget is rather tight), but getting a massive tortilla full of beans, rice, lettuce, cheese, onions, and cilantro for $5 is simply amazing! And now I'm second guessing my decision to write this review while hungry... But back to the point, they do have a covered section if you want to hang out and eat at the truck, or even if you are swinging by to pick something up while it is raining, you don't have to wait in your car. They also have salsas, utensils, and napkins, so really everything you would need to be able to eat there. Great place, I recommend them every chance I get. Update: I recently got a burrito from Carlito's to go and thought I'd share some evidence to support my statement of getting a 'huge' burrito from them. Check out the photos! The burrito is just over 8 inches long and weighs in at 25oz on my postal scale. Still my favorite burrito.

Yelp
I love Carlito's and always make a point to go there when I'm in Eugene. I always get the beef and cheese pupusas with extra salvadoran sauce and it's perfect every time and Carlito is so sweet!

Yelp
I'm not sure how this food truck has a rating of 4.7. The pupusas were THE most bland I've ever eaten. I've had many pupusas over the years. I know what good tastes like. I tasted each ingredient and each individual component was flavorless. The masa needed salt. The beans, flavorless. The cheese had no flavor at all. The encurtido needed more vinegar and some oregano. The encurtido was just salty cabbage. And the empty box of prepared coleslaw was outside. The owners don't cut their own veggies. The mild salsa was good. I wonder if the owners are dumbing down the flavor profile to appeal to the people in Eugene? As much as I love food trucks and want to support them, this is one I'd avoid.

Yelp
Delicious food! Zucchini and cheese is my favorite. They also have a really spicy sauce that Is flavorful and not just vinegar based!

Angie M.

Yelp
So good. I devoured my papusa before I could take a photo! I recommend 10/10 I ordered the zucchini last time. I would try the garlic one! The curtido wasn't pickled. My one complaint. Wasn't bad, just not juicy.

Yelp
So, I really miss a traditional Salvadoran pupuseria so figured I'd check this place out. It hit the right buttons, but had some untraditional missteps in my opinion. I don't have them pictured here but I also got pupusas. I like that they have loroco and many filling options. There was only a little bit of the cabbage slaw with my order. I prefer a lot though so no biggie there. It was also pretty flavorless which was a little more sad. I like a slight pickled veg flavor going on with mine. The red sauce was more like a spicy chile paste instead of a mild tomato sauce which is traditional. All in all pretty good!!! Definitely will order again. The burrito, not as exciting. It is huge! The size of my forearm. The carnitas I got inside were great!! The rest was really really dry. Even the sauce on the outside. Just needs more liquidy bean/crema/ meat broth action. Probably wouldn't order this again. But, would the carnitas in another form! I love fried plantains. I asked them to make me some with the traditional sides. They normally serve with fried eggs and avocado. Super tasty! I'm a fan of their beans, and really enjoyed the plantains! Will definitely order again. Customer service is awesome!

Yelp
I had the Pulpusas. One chicken and cheese the other garlic and cheese. They had so much flavor. The salsa that was served was nothing like I've ever tasted before. It had a lot of green herbs and complimented the pulpusas wonderfully. The man that waited on us we very friendly.
google avatar

Ryan A.

Yelp
Service with a smile. The sauce here has a unique and tasty flavor. Likewise, the salsa has a nice taste and a decent level of heat. Thank you Carlito for all of the satisfying burritos!

Maxwell A.

Yelp
Great food, service and ambiance. I would definitely recommend for anyone who wants a delicious taco.

Yelp
spent a good amount of money with y'all like $100+ in one sitting . Very disappointed with the cheap ingredients especially the canned frijoles (beans ) from Winco being used in all your dishes . make your enchilada sauce from scratch stop being lazy and using cans. This is makes you look like every other person trying to make authentic Mexican food but it just taste like trash.

Yelp
One of the best places in Eugene to eat!!!!! You must try him his food is amazing and also the hood is reasonable I'm price.

Yelp
I've been driving past this truck for a long time and finally tried it--a great find, especially for vegetarians. The owner said he can make anything on the menu veggie, and there are already a few kinds of vegetarian pupusas listed there, so lots of variety available. The pupusas and slaw were delicious, and my favorite was guaraches with that sauce on top. I was also impressed with how fast the food was ready. Definitely worth supporting this business.

Carlos A.

Yelp
Muy buenas pupusas! Las recomiendo. La atención muy buena, muy agradable, excelente!Carlitos Papuseria

Yelp
I recently moved to Eugene and I was excited to find a place that sells pupusas! My childhood food. We went all out and ordered pupusas revueltas (cheese, pork, beans) and cheese with loroco which is a type of delicious Salvadoran flower. We also had the taquitos. I was not disappointed! Just do yourself a favor and try the pupusas. Shout out to Carlito's for his great customer service.
google avatar

Chonyu L.

Yelp
We got 3 pupusas, 2 tacos, and an enchilada plate to split with 4 people and it was very tasty and more than enough to fill us up. Prices are super reasonable and there's a cute seating area outside of the food truck. I only recently noticed this little place and my family is very pleased to know it now. And they have a menu with pictures! Excellent date spot
google avatar

Yelp
YUMMMM pupusas were SO delicious, my boyfriend got a torta and devoured it which he usually doesn't finish a whole meal so that says a lot! The owner and chief was very nice, very fast considering it was kinda busy on a Friday evening and he was alone so props to him for doing it all alone! Definitely a hidden gem and I cannot wait to go back and try different dishes

Esther K.

Yelp
This place was amazing!!!! I was craving pupusas and I loved that they had a lot of different options. We also ordered enchiladas, torta, and the flauta. The flauta was BOMB! The best thing ever, it had real avocados, rice, meat, sour cream, and enchilada sauce. I would 100% go again and recommend. Owner was very friendly and kind to us too! :)
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Best pupusas in Eugene! The jalapeño and loroco ones are especially good. Tortas are also delicious. Great value and Carlito is a super nice guy.
google avatar

Lee M.

Yelp
The torta was good, the pupusas were even better. The curtido could have been better (but who eats pupusas for the curtido).

Yelp
First time visiting Carlito's. I wish Yelp allowed half stars because I'd rate it a solid 4.5. The gentleman who took our order was super nice. (May or may not have been Carlito himself. My bad for not taking the time to ask.) The food cart and surrounding area were very clean. Our food (to go) was prepared quickly - and it's totally friendly on the wallet!! TWO papusas for $5! It comes with a side of slaw and some hot sauce. Totally filling. If you have a smaller appetite one will do ya! Several vegetarian options. Not sure on the availability for vegans. Cheese seemed to be a dominate theme but I suppose you could ask for it without. I got the vegetarian papusas. At first I thought they were bland and lacking filling ... but then I got a little further in and hot damn was that cheesy cilantro onion bean concoction delicious! The hot sauce definitely has some kick to it so I went easy on that. Sadly I didn't care for the slaw. No other reviewers seem to mind it so it might just be me. But this is my review so again, nah to the slaw. I'd like to go back again and try a burrito or a taco. Hopefully they'll be as tasty as the meal I just finished and I'll be able to edit this baby to 5 stars for Carlito!

Yelp
After driving by so many times, I decided to stop by and have myself a pupusa. I went with the chicken and cheese. We seated ourselves next to the cart under a tent like setting. From the looks of the pupusa was amazing and gave me a feeling that this is going to be awesome, but was disappointed with the taste. There was just too much masa and could have used more filling. The chicken was just had a salty profile with no other spices. The sour cream on top just added to to blandness of the flavors. Add to add a vast amount of hot sauce to give it flavor, also you only have choice of one hot sauce, so hope you like tapatio. Overall, staff was friendly, the food was just okay. The setting is a bit noisy since it is on a very busy road.
google avatar

Aleetha O.

Yelp
Some of the greatest food in Eugene! Please try everything on this menu! You won't be disappointed. The hot salsa is HOT and SO YUMMY, the papusas are cheesy and tasty, my personal fav are the rolled tacos with rice and beans. The beans are to DIE FOR. No joke, I would eat a whole bucket of their beans if I could. Not to mention the service is amazing, they are so incredibly nice, and friendly. I am sad to move to portland and not have Carlitos near by, but I will be coming here every time I visit eugene!
google avatar

Carly G.

Yelp
Made from scratch pupusas- delicious. Same for the guarache and sincronizadas. Carlito is a super friendly guy and you can't beat the prices.
google avatar

Elijah B.

Yelp
Such amazing food! I had the beef and carnitas tacos and they were just spectacular. I could tell the food was fresh and it wasn't greasy just was a perfect bite, every bite! So cheap and affordable too! I could eat her all the time. There chicharrón is also amazing and there burritos are pretty great. I'd easily tell and a friend and go check it out!
google avatar

Kahiau J.

Yelp
They definitely know how to cook their pork right. This is coming from a person who has raised pigs hand down one of the few places in town I will order pork and come back for a second time

Cole K.

Yelp
My patience aches as I wait for my steaming hot traditional masa papusa to cool down. I've been eating here a while and I think it is finally time to capture the experience. In the back alley of a cement jungle is colored by the tangerine tinted food cart run by Carlito himself. His joyous smile and a lovely "Hello my friend!" Is always a fantastic greeting to my grey clouded day. Now that my papusa has cooled down I take a bite. The chicken veggie papusa I ordered is subtle in flavor the masa has a crisp outside and a sweet after taste. Not all good food has to be rich in flavor as there is a nostalgic quality of the food to a culture that I did not even grow up in. It's as if the appreciation of the food was passed down to me. With two papusas I feel satiated and for 7.00 dollars I leave happy for my day. For a walk or for a gentle sit to watch the other happy customers come and go, Carlitos papuseria is a great place to grab a quick bite. Delicious
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
The best pupusas I've had in Eugene! They come with pickled cabbage and some yummy salsa! There's is also lots to pick from and price is very reasonable.

Mary R.

Yelp
THE best pupusas around. Period. Fast service, lots of variety, and great prices. Really, the best pupusas though.
google avatar

Erik D.

Yelp
I've been here twice now. The first time they forgot to put half the order in my to-go bag and I didn't realize it until I got home. When I went back he apologized and gave me two extra tacos for free. The second time I ordered my food and sat outside waiting for it to come. After 20 minutes I walked up to the order window asking if the food was ready and both employees seemed surprised. Even though the guy who took my order was still there and the other man (the owner) was two feet away while my order was taken. Again, they apologized and gave me some free food. I really like the food, it's cheap and the owner is always super nice. I appreciate the food comp when they make a mistake. I would give them 5 stars if they were a little more organized.
google avatar

Spencer P.

Yelp
Yum! Veggie pupusa and beef pupusa were amazing. I ordered a side of rice and they forgot to include it in my order but the pupusa were so so good I basically forgot about it!
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Absolutely love the food here. I highly recommend getting the Flauta. Their portions are really generous and prices are cheap. The quality is absolutely top notch. I've been here about 5 times this month and I plan on going back today. The staff is very friendly, and the owner treats people like family. Give this place a chance!
google avatar

L L.

Yelp
Nobody's perfect right but we love coming here. Not for everybody cause it's very informal and that's part of the ambiance. If you haven't tried pupusas please do they're like a pancake and a tamal, the best of both worlds
google avatar

Myss A.

Yelp
Great food, great prices, very friendly service! I really enjoyed my lunch and will be going back. I love that there is a vegetarian option that is actually good!
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
This is the best taco place in eugene! Went on cinco de mayo 2017 because they were serving $1 tacos. Made it a tradition. The tacos are amazing. Beef tacos are my favorite.
google avatar

Annie K.

Yelp
Happened uoon this food truck as I was looking for a bite while on break at work. The owners were so attentive to detail, everthing made from scratch, including the corn tortillas. Prices were amazing as well! Excellent. Next time I'm in Eugene I know where I will stop.

Vincent M.

Yelp
Carlitos is the man! Best bang for your buck for sure! I've had tacos, pupusas, and his burritos and they're all delicious. Friendly guy, decent prices; on top of it all, even proportions on the burritos. Highly, highly recommend this man's food, A1!

Evan A.

Yelp
I'm sorry, but not. Carlito's has let my family down 3 times now. Chicken quesadilla... awful, Pork & Beef tacos... terrible and extremely greasy, Burritos... nope. Unfortunately Carlito's is very sub par Mexican cuisine. There are much better options, less than 1/4 mile away at a better price.
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
I used to drive by this place all the time on my way to work in the morning. Havin fallen in love with papusas years ago, once I found a place that made them, I knew I had to get some asap. I came one evening after work and was pleasantly greeted. Upon looking at the menu for a minute, I settled on getting a pork and chesse papusa and a chicken taco. Knowing that these papusa are freshly made, I had no problem waiting five to ten minutes for my order to be ready. Once I got home and was able to dig, I went for my chicken taco first. Pretty basic taco; meat, onion, cilantro and cheese. I've had better tacos before but wasn't really expecting to have an awesome taco from a place known for papusas mostly. On to the main event, papusa time! I ordered the green salsa to go with my papusa, paired up together made it taste amazing! It was chessy and meaty and you could tell it was freshly made to order. Every bite was better than the last until it was all gone. I wish I had order one more, it was really that good.

C C.

Yelp
I'd not before had Salvadoran pupusas, but the impression left by Carlito's is distinct. The masa has a lovely fired quality to the exterior: not something one gets from simple oven cooking, but from skilled charing under fire. Guisado within is simple, yet--no doubt, by tradition--nuanced with delightful herbal and earthy complications. I will soon be back to try more of their offerings!
google avatar

Bomb D.

Yelp
Carlito's Pupuseria is amazing! Straight up amazing big well rounded burritos that are bigger than my forearm for $6! Heavenly piled nachos to the sky for $6! Or 4 piled straight up amazingly tasty tacos for $8! Yes please! Always tasty and on point with his portions. Happy, friendly, talkative and hardworking. You can never go wrong here. I've been going here for years and he is always happy and upbeat. Carts and food places everywhere can really learn a thing or two or 3 from Carlito's! At one point I was getting at least 2 burritos a day (Sometimes 4 to set me for the weekend & definitely have eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner all in one day here many times lol) it's just so D@m good, how could you not? You rock Carlito's! I'll be visiting you soon.. Really soon.. Like right when you open today! Wish you were 24 hours!! \m/ :D \m/
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
The chicken Pupusas are fantastic! One of the best things I've ever eaten in my life.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Huge 5 dollar burritos that are oh so good. My fave are the pupusas and there yummy, meaty cheesiness.
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
Hidden gem! I love this place tastes authentic anf the masa is fluffy crispy and leaves nothing to be deaired the perfect pupusa to me. Keep it up guys!

Amy K.

Yelp
Really good food for really good prices. I got two vegetarian pupusas, which came with slaw, and it was more food then I could finish for $5. It was yummy and fresh, the cheese is super delicious, and the slaw is the perfect accompaniment. Service was fast and friendly. The outdoor eating space looked fairly inviting... I got my food to go, but I'd be inclined to eat there next time. They have quite a large menu of non-pupusa items too, but I enjoyed my pupusas.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I eat here all the time because I'm a poor college kid who loves good Mexican food. It's super cheap and super good, they take credit card, the tacos are way better and cheaper than anything at Tacovore or any other competitive Americanized Mexican food joint.
google avatar

Carmen T.

Yelp
The people working here are wonderful, and the pupusas remind me of the way my grandma makes them. A block away from where I work and I'm very happy to give them my business
google avatar

Ryan A.

Yelp
Best street tacos and puppusas in eugene. El Salvadorian food. Great prices. Great flavorful meats. Fresh and cooked to order.
google avatar

Roger R.

Yelp
Love this little joint they sell great food at an even better price! My wife and daughter like to walk here and sit outside together!

Lor S.

Yelp
Awesome Salvadoran food! Reminds me of my trip to Central America the Pupusas are legit, and it's hard to find good Salvadoran food around sometimes!

Gilmar O.

Yelp
This is the best place for pupusas in eugene. My wife loves the revueltas and my 7 year old loves the cheese pupusa, my 17 year old and i love the chicharron with cheese pupusas. Best place, when in town this is our stop.
