We had been wanting to try Carlo's Bakery for quite a while and finally decided to give it a go. The shop was clean and seemed well organized, though it was very empty when we went in they seem to have a good technique to control a crowd if need be, come in one door, pass the counters and order, then make your way to check out. I have seen Carlo's, and the owner Buddy on Food Network, and we mainly wanted to try the lobster tails, so we got a 4 pack of them, and also added a mini cherry cheesecake cup.
The desserts themselves were quite good. The lobster tails are a pastry that looks similar to a croissant filled with a custard/pastry cream. They are very good, the texture of the outside of the pastry is harder than a standard croissant (in a good way) maybe because it is baked with some sugar, I don't know but it works especially when paired with the rich custard filling, they are delicious.
The cheesecake was also good, but it was crustless, a cup filled with cheesecake topped with a tasty chewy pie type filling, a dollop of whipped cream and a small amount of what I believe was crumbled cake. This was good, but I like a crust on my cheesecake, and this could really have used a graham cracker crust both for the texture and flavor. The cheesecake itself was, well cheesecake, it tasted good and had good texture, but I have had equally good or better plenty of times from plenty of places or at home. The cherry compote mix was excellent, and gave the dish a nice acidity that worked really well to bring it up a level, but the ratio was off with too much cheesecake to too little cherry mix, and zero crust.
So all in all the food we tried probably rates 4 stars, the cheesecake was good, but lack of crust drops it a bit, the lobster tails were very good, but the cost of the items, around $20.00 for 4 lobster tails seems pricy considering each one is about 4 inches long and like a half croissant, an alright price to try once in a while or on a special occasion, but I would probably not get regularly. They are very good, but if you are getting them for a group the price climbs quickly, and though the quality is good, you are also paying for the name on the door. So did we enjoy the pastries we got, yes they tasted good, and having never tried the lobster tails before it was very neat to try them, but will we go again, maybe, but we would not go out of our way for them, and if we were walking past it would just depend if we would pop in. But it is definitely a tasty once in a blue moon treat to try, and always interesting to get to try some of the things you see on TV.
