"And, of course, a trip to Fredericksburg isn’t complete without (waiting in line for) a homemade frozen custard cone from 76-year-old local landmark Carl’s." - Missy Frederick

We went there a while ago, about two years ago but I thought I’d share. Carl’s offers a delicious custard. Very creamy and sweet. My son did not like his milkshake but me and my daughter loved our ice-cream. I am lactose intolerant, but the custard was definitely worth it. I think you can tell though by the look on her face! Would definitely recommend. They are cash only though!

Coming from the high school sock-hop, me and my gal... well, that's the vibe it will give ya, something out of the 50'. Also, like the 50s, not cards, cash only, tax is already included in the price. We have heard the rave about Carl's, so we wanted to try. The strawberry was amazing, and even the cone was great. Staff was super friendly and dressed in what you would picture a diner employee would look like, little paper hat and all. Great place to grab a cone!

A very nice ice cream vendor with a nostalgic feel from "back in the day." Service receives full marks as they were shockingly fast at delivering your order, and this includes a polite smile from the employees upon receiving your treat. With regards to their politeness, the atmosphere of the place was inviting and enjoyable. Of course, the real reason most people are there is because of the compelling drive of their sweet tooth (and I unashamedly possess a voracious one). Indeed, I went there for a "simple" custard and received instead an exceptional one (which disappeared much too quickly, alas!). If you're seeking a delicious treat on a despairingly hot day (and you happen to be in charming Fredericksburg), then look no further than here, for it is here that exceptionalism lies. Thank you Carl's Custard! Until next time! P.S. Dear reader, if you don't wish to be disappointed, keep in mind that this store ONLY accepts cash and no credit or debit cards (without exception!), which I believe is an economically wise decision on their part.

Carl's is a staple of Fredericksburg and definitely a must hit place if you are stopping through. We have many memories coming to Carl's and I am glad I get to share it with my kids.

So this gem has been here a long time! The ice cream is old fashioned and simple. It is also very good! This is a great little after dinner place with a lot of history! If you get the opportunity you should go! And eat it very slow and enjoy the history! This is the last one of these places around! Enjoy!

Absolutely amazing! We were in town for 5 days and visited twice. The first time I had a vanilla cone which was so good we had to go back. When we went back, we grabbed a quart each of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. I was thrilled to learn they offer insulated bags for slightly longer trips because we were staying about 30 minutes away. When we got to our home away from home, the quarts were all still solid. We enjoyed those over the next 2 days...so creamy and delicious! It should be noted they are cash only which I know I've seen in other reviews and questions but that can't be shared enough! I would hate for somebody to get there and not have cash...what a disappointment that would be!

Held nothing but high hopes for this specific 'retro-ish' custard location. Old-school setting nestled in middle of a seemingly depressed neighborhood means no operating expense spent on fancy decorations that have nothing to do with ice cream. No frills, super-small menu suggested old-school real-cream custard that chains and large companies would try to cut corners on. Got the strawberry cone. The end product custard was bland, thin, melted fast, not much to write about, and just not that flavorful. Tasted like thin cream that was a little too soft. At ~$7 for a small cone, it did not feel great for the value.

First this is CASH ONLY. I did not see this noted on their home page or menu page on their site. Luckily I had cash on me this particular time. I was going to order a sundae with chocolate custard but the sign states they are only made with vanilla. I don’t understand why. It’s impossible to see this on their site as well. I ended up just getting a chocolate cone. I was expecting a creamy chocolate flavor but it was more of an artificial chocolate flavor. I prefer the taste of a certain chain competitor which offers more variety and allows card as well. It was a bit disappointing and did not leave me wanting to return. I was really looking forward to trying this place.
