Exceptional Willamette Valley Restaurants to Visit Post-Wine Tasting

"Load up on sandwiches, macarons, and hazelnut-studded shortbread before traipsing through Carlton’s several winery tasting rooms. The Carlton Bakery is a cozy bakeshop with big windows and cafe tables that suit the European influences of the bread and sweets served. Those looking for a sizeable brunch of eggs Benedict or apple cider French toast will find that here, as well." - Emily Teel, Rebecca Roland

Google
It's worth the drive! Wow, some wonderful pastries, great veggies quiche, and a can't put it down sandwich. I hear the coffee is good too. So many options even later in the lunch hour.

Google
Amazinggggggggg. Coffee was good, but that bakery 👌🏼 Daaaaaaamn.

Google
Cute local bakery and breakfast/lunch cafe. It ain’t cheap but all the food looks and tastes great. The bread is wonderful and so many pastries to choose from. My croque madam was perfect! Coffee is a bit so-so. Very nice patio too. It’s lovely that local kids get to work here - maybe just be good if they spoke while taking your order! Ah, teenagers :-)

Google
This bakery is amazing! We ducked in here because we were looking for lunch options and all their pasties looked great. Ordered a could of gougeres which were okay, but the pecan scroll and the kouign amann from Brittany were incredible. Great little stop.

Google
Don't let the 14$ price tag set your expectations... My "classic french sandwich" was a small piece of lightly toasted bread with some ham and cheese. I can't describe how disappointed I am, just look at the photo. Pretty sure there was no dijonnaise. If I wasn't starving and on the move I would have attempted to return it 😔

Google
This was a great little bakery we stopped in for lunch. Sandwiches were good and bakery items even better!

Google
Fantastic pastries and extras. A bit pricey but you do get what you pay for. Cinnamon rolls and almond sticky rolls are great. They use Stumptown coffee and drinks turn out tasty. If you need to stop and pick up a few bites while wine tasting this a must stop.

Stopped by for a mocha. Good drink, very slow service. I will try again, perhaps they had a new barista in training 🤷‍♂️

Yelp
When I tell you I was fat kid in a candy store, I'm not kidding. Also could have been that we were driving back from camping in Tillamook and food that was not charred from a camp fire was pretty incredible. Stopped in on a late lazy Sunday morning and we're welcomed by the beautiful smell of freshly baked goods. Picked up a bit of everything: sweet and savory. Don't make the same mistake we did and buy more than one of the mushroom or jalapeño croissants bites; about the size of a donut hole. Very tasty! Also picked some plain and flavored croissants, sticky buns, and the most interesting bacon and whole grain mustard pastry - not pictured, wolfed it down too quickly. Only thing I would pass on would be the short bread cookies. Left me a bit underwhelmed, which was surprising. Either way, I'll look forward to picking up some baked goodies anytime we find ourselves buying wine or coming back from the coast.

Yelp
Came here every morning we were in town for pastries and every single one was delicious. The croissants are buttery and flavorful, and the scones have interesting flavors and the perfect texture. Cannot recommend coming here highly enough to start your day with pastries and coffee. On our last day we decided to have a sit-down breakfast. Their Apple compote French toast on brioche was delicious. The fruit tasted great on top. The avocado toast was immensely disappointing. We were fairly confident that the avocado was not fresh and had come from a pre-puréed container. Staff members were always friendly. Even when full it wasn't too loud. Highly recommend for pastries and coffee, not so sure about the full breakfast.

Yelp
A cute little bakery in a little town outside McMinnville. They had a case full of delicious looking pastries. I got they Avocado toast and it was just ok. The staff were friendly and quick to help.

Yelp
Still some of the best macarons around! We compare all others we try to Carlton Bakery. We have been coming here for many many years, even before we moved to Oregon. We used to make sure we would drive out here when we would come to visit family throughout the years. So glad they have been able to expand their little bakery shop to a bigger location across the street from the old location. It was such a beautiful day outside we grabbed our treats and walked across the street to sit in the park and enjoy them in the sunshine. They now offer a larger variety of local favorite jams, jellies, marmalades and olive oils. They have coffee and tea drinks as well. They do have an outside eating area out back.

Yelp
Unfortunately I can't recommend this place. We came in on a Sunday morning for a quick bite and had a less than stellar experience. The building is beautiful and the interior is cozy and inviting. There are lots of bakery choices and food gifts to purchase. The staff however was disorganized, rude, and pretentious. There was no communication on how the line moved or where to order. Our breakfast sandwiches took over 30 minutes to receive and at that point we needed them to go. When we politely asked the staff to please box it up they didn't reply, sneered at us and turned away. While this is a cute and cozy spot for some eats, the hospitality and service is lacking.

Yelp
Charming bakery with many delicious options. Tried their Sea Biscuit with cardamom. Medium or dark roast coffee. Tea including Matcha. I must try if you're in town. We'll be heading back this morning for a second round.

Yelp
A nice European type pastry and sandwich shop on the Main Street in Carlton - well worth the stop given the charm of Carlton. The coffee is very good, the baked items are made on site, and if you need something more substantial, great sandwiches and salads for lunch. Inside and outside seating. An added bonus is there is all types of local goods/products to take advantage of during your visit.

Yelp
This coffee shopped oozed charm. When you walk in there is a display case filled with delicious pastries, then to the right there is a cozy fireplace, and in back a charming patio. Now on to the food, we ordered a delicious marionberry croissant, and had the veggie quiche. The quiche was the shining star. It was light and fluffy and filled with fresh veggies. My only gripe is that, we were dining there, and the food was served on real plates, but when the coffee came, it was served in a to-go cup. I asked if I could have a ceramic cup, and was told that wasn't an option. Environment aside, I never feel like coffee taste as good when drinking from a plastic lid. It made what could have been an exceptional experience, only a good experience.

Yelp
My husband said the cinnamon roll he got was amazing and crispy which he liked, very delicious. I got the strawberry rhubarb tart and it was dry to me and needed more rhubarb. Tasted like a biscuit with a little jam. Great friendly service though.

Yelp
Espectacular. Soso good. We sat next to fireplace great place to set. The food was amazing the experience was great. I had my cousin visiting from Miami and so glad I took her there

Yelp
Such a cute little bakery on Carlton's quaint main street serving up quality coffee and an assortment of sweet and savory pastries. We got the Almond Sticky Bun which was heavenly. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
We drive here from McMinnville to get our bakery items. In our opinion this is the best bakery in the region. It is located in a fun little look town as well.

Yelp
Good food, nice atmosphere, ok service...really like the outdoor seating area. If you're in the Carlton area, a nice stop in

Yelp
Baked goods are top notch - 5 stars. Service is not at all welcoming. Seemed like the young man didn't want to be working. The young lady was pleasant on the phone but was stonefaced in person. Is there a Manager/ Owner on site? Seems like there should be. Baked goods are 5+. Service, a 2. Overall rating is a 4.

Yelp
Delicious pastries that are well displayed and organized with good sandwiches and salad for lunch. Has lots of curated local sundries like small batch wine, honey, jam, chocolate, pasta and sauce, etc to make a meal at home extra special. My toddlers thoroughly enjoyed the blueberry macaron, chocolate croissant, and a little ball of something I don't remember the name of.

Tiffany L.

Yelp
This place has great coffee and pastries both sweet and savory. Picked up a couple sandwiches to go and took them up with us estate tasting and it was the perfect lunch. Cute indoor and outdoor seating areas there if you want to enjoy the ambience.

Yelp
Sorry to come into this little town to try out the bakery that I had read about. I was not disappointed. My breakfast croissant was delicious Even though I found it very small. The quiches were large And authentic. Both were served with a lightly dressed salad with edamame and very tasty. I bought a box of shortbread which are made there and take him very good yet not very sweet. Went well with my cappuccino. There's a fireplace that adds to an ambience of tranquility and relaxation. The staff are young folks that are very attentive and respectful.

Yelp
You would expect a country bakery to make a good BLT sandwich. But, not here. The tomato was sliced paper thin, the bacon was not cooked fresh and the lettuce was limp salad mix. The only redeeming part was the bread. Very disappointing and certainly not worth the price. If you can't make a good BLT sandwich don't offer it.

John D.

Yelp
The pastries are delicious! And their assortment of local cheeses and other products is well curated. High prices limit the appeal, and the service is slow. A breakfast sandwich was a 20 minute wait.

Yelp
Legit French bakery in the heart of Carlton. I discovered this bakery after attending an event at Ken Wright Cellars and tasting a lavender shortbread cookie. It was buttery goodness with a hint of lavender that made it next level. The next time I was wine tasting in the area, we arrived earlier in the day just so we could visit the bakery and buy a stash of shortbread cookies! We discovered chai shortbread which were just as awesome. And the almond sticky bun was insane!!! While there we tried the breakfast sandwiches. My egg, bacon & cheese on a buttery croissant was sooo yummy. OMG, I'm glad I don't live close by otherwise I would stop here way too often. But when I am in Carlton wine tasting, I always stop in for some delectable treats.

Yelp
If you're using maps on your iPhone, it's going to send you across the street. I asked the lady at the counter and she said some people think they are out of business. Nonetheless, I reported the error through the app, but in case it helps anyone that is not familiar with the area, the bakery is in the yellow box shown.

Yelp
The atmosphere is absolutely wonderful. It is so cozy and pleasant, and it even has a nice upscale feel. We really loved sitting by the fireplace. The food was very good though quite expensive. The best part was the free lattes I think they mistakenly made a couple extra drinks so they offered them to us. It was very kind (very appreciated too) and we enjoyed them a lot. The vanilla bean latte was delicious.

Yelp
This is a awesome bakery. Lot of fresh made pastries that are absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Yo these pastries will change your life. Cardamom sticky bun. Says sticky bun, but more like a sweet croissant bun with flaky buttery sweet happiness. May cause tears of joy and temporary loss of speech. Scone excellence lives here. Soft and dense and flavorful. Shortbread, yes. Anything with lavender has auto charge capabilities on my credit card.

Yelp
Amazing pastries. Maybe the best I had ever in Oregon. Loved the bacon croissant!!!Nice staff. Beautiful building with a cozy atmosphere with both indoor fireplace and a covered huge patio on the back!!! Perfect for these Covid times Only draw back is 40 mins from portland. But when in the wine country worth the 10 min detour from Newberg.

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Delicious bakery- have loved everything I have tried. Most recently placed an online sandwich order for a large group pick-up and everyone agreed the sandwiches were fantastic. Will definitely be going back!
google avatar

Linda W.

Yelp
Staff were not welcoming and the last 2 times I visited I was treated like I was an inconvenience. I waited 30 minutes for a plain cup of coffee to go. Far better places to waste my time. I will not go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous bakery! Best eggs Benedict ever! Very tasty; ham was delicious and eggs done to perfection. Their lavender shortbreads are out of this world. As well as the cinnamon rolls. A must try when in the area. Highly recommend this adorable bakery in the heart of Carlton.

Yelp
Love me bakeries in little towns, there's been some pleasant surprises throughout the years: Kanab, UT, Manzanaita, OR, and Gearhart, OR to name a few. Unfortunately, there's nothing special about this place. The Jalapeño Popper was dry with barely anything on the inside. The young counter gal was very nice.

Yelp
We love to go to Carlton Bakery. The people who work there are always friendly. And the pastries are my favorite in the county.

Yelp
I stop here for late breakfast on the weekends - on my way to work. The food is great ! The pastries are wonderful ! The service .... awful. Staff will not engage or even acknowledge you - you have to prod them to accept your order. There appears to be no one supervising the staff. The staff often does not know the menu and simply says: " we can't do that". It's borderline rude. Unfortunately - the only other choice in Carlton on Saturday mornings is the gas station or convienience store . I am amazed at the number of good reviews I see on Yelp ! Most of the other customers I encounter are frustrated with the service as well .

Yelp
Gorgeous French style bakery located in Carlton. The macarons, pastries and sandwiches are mouthwatering. One of the best bakeries I've ever been to hands down.

Yelp
I just returned from Alaska at 3:00 AM and needed to make sandwiches for a Music festival at Kason Vineyards which started at noon, where am I going to get bread??? Most stores are 10 miles or more away. Now these sandwiches are not a normal thing....Mufalettas, famous in New Orleans, so needed special bread. on my way to Mac... I saw Carlton bakery, so stopped by and checked out what was available...Boule bread, large round 12 grain bread, @ $7.50 each???, OK, I'll take them all, 8 total. Once home I started to get to work, quite large, fresh baked, smelling good! Now this sandwich is easy to make, if you have the right stuff(ing)... Italian mortadella with pistachios, olive mixture and olive oil, mine came from the Central Market in N.O. this sandwich requires that you remove some of the bread in the middle to make room for the goodies, boy, this bread is good stuff! Now 3 people said that this was the best sandwich ever in their life! Must have been the bread,

Yelp
An amazing world-class bakery located in the heart of Carlton, Oregon. Definitely one of my favorite places to go on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Their new location has a beautiful fireplace inside and a patio in the back. They also open at 7 AM which is nice for those of us who get up early.

Tim E.

Yelp
I've visited 3 times, so far, everything I've ordered was really good. Nice open patio with heaters and music. Unbelievably clean newly renovated bathrooms. Epi loaf, quiche, breakfast sandwich, and pastries are all above par. What I like about the pastries is they are very lightly sweetened, as opposed to other bakeries who dump in the sugar. I've only ordered black coffee to drink, it's pretty good too. Nothing is cheap but really good.

Yelp
We stopped to grab a breakfast sandwich on our way out of town. The breakfast sandwiches were 13 dollars and came with salad. The sandwich was very small and all you could really taste was the Dijon. We threw the salad away. We definitely will not be returning. Over priced!
google avatar

Yelp
What a delightful little find! We drove by on the way to an appointment and immediately said on our way back we wanted to stop by. Small town bakeries are such rare finds anymore. We got some quiche, lemon blueberry scones, lemon lavender shortbread cookies and a jalapeño cheddar roll. Everything was tasty and fresh. It's a little pricey and not something I could afford on a regular basis but as a once and a while treat, sure! The staff was friendly but I did feel a little rushed when ordering. If you're in the area it's worth stopping by.
google avatar

Tiffany B.

Yelp
Love this place! It's a great place to grab fresh baked bread when you don't live close to a Grand Central Bakery! My only complaint is on the already expensive loaf of bread, they also want to add a 25 cent charge for slicing. Really guys? I guess you can charge that in wine country when pickings are slim- I will always be back to grab my chai shortbread cookie fix, but will probably skip the sliced bread purchase.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
We got 2 breakfast sandwiches and they were tiny little things for $13 each. Took over 30 minutes to make. Tried to cancel order and they don't let you cancel. Breakfast sandwiches come with a weird radish salad for some reason. Other people waiting for their coffees got the wrong order and were displeased. Workers milling about in back chatting and goofing around while customers wait for food. Extremely overpriced. Do not recommend!

Yelp
Too much. This place is a MUST STOP - the finest, most perfect Shortbread Cookies I have EVER eaten. Perfection in subtle sweetness...thought I was going to die with the Lavender....until I tasted the Coconut....then the Chocolate...the Plain... There is a true English art to a legendary ShortBread cookie. This lovely little place simply NAILED it. LORD have MERcy. I don't care where I am in the Portland area - thank heavens our kids live there - there will be an order placed and more purchased on EVERY SINGLE trip. I mean to tell you.... Lovely bakery, charming corner location. I am going to call to see if they ship....fingers crossed.
google avatar

Yelp
Pecan sticky, apple tart, I am in love with these pastries. Some Stumptown coffee to go with it and it makes the perfect coffee stop in the morning. I'm surprised that this place wasn't busier on a Sunday morning. I found a place to sit by the window and enjoy my coffee and pastry. Friendly service and a small town feel, this is a place to stop on your way through Carlton!
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Perfection. I've been fortunate to live near enough to this bakery to add several inches to my waistline if i'm Not Careful. And that's because everything i've ever had the pleasure of eating from this place is, well.... delicious. Tasty. Almost too pretty to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful bakery with delicious breads and pastries. Friendly clerks. Well worth a stop!!!

Yelp
Loved the bakery on our last visit 18 months ago. Moved into a nicely appointed new location but have cut back on the number of bread style offerings Breakfast sandwiches good but quiche served half cold. Pasties still excellent and worth the visit

Hbgman M.

Yelp
Sadly disappointed.... drove 25 minutes in hopes of a good pastry and maybe bread and coffee . Service seemed uninterested and not knowledgeable. When we asked for the item they didn't know which one to grab . Pastries were over cooked and taste slightly burnt. My coffee was made wrong so they made everyone else's coffees and then went back to mine ...huh ?? Spent 25 on a couple pastries , loaf of bread and a 16oz latte that felt half full as a person who has spent 20 years in restaurants and my fiancée family has multiple bakeries it was a dissapointing experience. The company I work for is probably the #1 supplier of this bakery and I rave to my customers about the quality of the bread but there is no industry discount apparently (staff didn't really know and nobody to ask ) and with today's experience I'll probably go somewhere else .
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Great breakfast! We ordered the breakfast sandwich, eggs Benedict, lemon-blueberry scone and raspberry almond crossiant. It was all amazing!
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
We stayed just down the road from the bakery so we stopped by for breakfast prior to wine tasting. The quiche looked great but the $11 price tag gave pause. Instead, I went with the almond sticky and a latte. Both were delicious, and I'm glad I got to have some Stumptown coffee while in Oregon. My friend got the bacon cheese pastry, and ended getting another to fortify herself for wine tasting. We took home a baguette to snack on as well so we could nosh at our AirBnB. It was good too, and it made me wish I had fresh baked bread within walking distance back home.
google avatar

Selena N.

Yelp
I've been here a few times. My winery is right around the corner. I've stopped here before for water, or a treat, but never for a sandwich. I had the turkey sandwich for$8.25. It wasn't overwhelming for the price, although it was good. Usually I prefer the place down the street, but this was good for a sandwich in a pinch. They have fresh farm eggs too which I bought to try. Hard to get good farm fresh eggs. They were$6. Ones in stores are well over that for quality eggs.

Amy S.

Yelp
No words. Just go. Well, Yelp is making me write more...ok, this is a REAL bakery serving authentic French offerings using REAL ingredients. If you are visiting (or if you live in the area) drive out the beautiful roads from wherever you are staying and enjoy a memorable meal, nosh and coffee. I will be frequenting this special place every time we visit the valley. See you there!

Yelp
My friends and I decided to venture out while staying that The Allison. I'm so glad we did! We visited Carlton and McMinnville. The Carlton Bakery was our first stop. The bakery is small with lots of natural lighting. The seating is all near the windows. You won't be disappointed with the various selections of baked products. They also have a good selection of breakfast sandwiches, including a vegetarian breakfast sandwich, which I think can also be made vegan (see picture with sandwich menu). It wasn't crowded when we were there, but there is not a lot of seating- I think 2-3 tables and then some bar stools at the window. There is also outdoor seating which is dog friendly. The bakery also has several nicely packaged baked goods that would make for excellent local gifts. Definitely worth stopping by! Five pictures included with review.
