Fantastic, magical day the Natural History Museum. Some of the absolute best dinosaur displays Ive seen. Breathtaking exhibit. Also an incredible Bird Hall. The Hall of American and African Animals is also fantastic. We were very excited to see the Egyptian Exhibit, but it was sadly closed. The section with gems and minerals to enormous and had we had more than a day to do the museum we would have spent more time exploring that as well. There is a cafe in the basement that had a nice selection of hot and cold items. The store was really comprehensive. Parking was very expensive which seemed excessive given its on top of the cost of getting into the museum. But overall it was worth it. If you take the elevator mind the note inside the elevator that tells you what floor to use for the Museum. Of note, one ticket gets you into BOTH the Museum of Natural History and the Art Museum and both are under the same roof. You can explore each one and the stores are very close to each other.

This is a great experience for those who not only love natural history, but also love the architecture of the gilded age! The natural history exhibits are informative, but not exhausting, giving enough information about scientific discoveries and processes without boring the public. The dinosaurs are some of their most impressive displays, showcasing a variety of species including the famous tyrannosaurus rex, to which this one is the holotype specimen, meaning that it is the first to be recognized as a tyrannosaurus and the gold standard that others use to compare other specimens. The mammal exhibits detail natural life from all around the world, and many of course highlight the local wildlife (western Pennsylvania and specifically the laurel highlands). The bug exhibit was also an impressive collection. The only complaint that I had was that the art museum and the natural history museum were difficult to navigate, though their collections were also impressive despite the Ancient Egyptian exhibits being closed. The gems and minerals were also one of the most elaborate displays of them that I have seen with the exception being the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Overall, this is a great museum for those who want to learn about natural history in the local region as well as around the world.

If you have a chance to go to the Haunted Museum event they hold around Halloween, I highly recommend going!!! It was so fun. They had trivia and photo ops and you could add on food and drinks. It was so fun, and costumes are allowed as long as you follow guidelines. Event is 21+

Google
Excellent experience wear some comfortable shoes dress light. Lots of walking and they do have an elevator for ones in wheelchairs or strollers. Once you park in the garage the museum is on level 6 the elevator is a long wait but worth it. You can not leave the parking garage with cash they only take credit cards. Minimum is $10.00. Went today Saturday collage kids everywhere. Enjoy

Google
Amazing museum where you can spend the whole afternoon! We absolutely loved the Polar life/Indian tribe section, wildlife dioramas, the Dino display, the hall of minerals (don't miss this one!!!) and the sculpture hall. Everyone from the staff is very friendly and helpful.

My niece took me to this museum and we had so much fun. Great way to spend the day hanging out, light dining and enjoying this experience.

Google
If you like reading and stopping at every display, you should plan to spend more than one full day here. As two nerds from out of state, my husband and I loved every moment here. The dinosaurs were like nothing we've seen before and the geology exhibit was super cool. I loved that there were placards near exhibits that are now considered out of date in some way (native American culture and the fossil fuel areas, for example). This is easily one of the best museums I've ever visited. This museum was so captivating that we came back for a second day, only to find out it was closed all day due to a private event. I wish there had been signage or staff letting us know :( Hence the four star review.

Google
It was awesome my first visit to Natural museum of history. Lots of things to explore about extinct animals and lots of information about older generation. A fun place for kids too but there are no much activities for kids. If kids don't mind exploring history than it would be fun for them. Nearby you have cathedral of leaning which is awesome too for prospective of building and architecture. Parking is decently priced being in downtown area. I recommend it for family with kids to be there.

Yelp
Super fun museum! It wasn't in our original plans, but we decided to stopped by when we had some free time. We took advantage of the 50% off if you go after 3pm deal. Which was perfect because we went on Thursday when they're open later, and we have young kids who could only handle a couple hours anyways. The exhibits were fun, some even interactive which the kids loved! There was so much variety, that there was something for everyone and you really got a chance to see/learn a lot. Honestly we just flew through, but the best way would be to take your time and spend 1/2 day on each exhibit to really take it on and consider the things you learned. If in the area, you should definitely stop by!

Yelp
My kids love visiting the Museum of Natural History. They are young but they enjoy walking around the gems and minerals sections. I like this too. So many interesting displays to look at. The dinosaurs are the main attractions we go to see. Such beautiful displays that are kept looking very well. One thing the kids go to do this time which isn't always open is excavate for dinosaur bones in sand. This was a really great time for them. There are many floors which other things like bugs and other mammals. You could definitely spend a whole day here if you wanted to!

Yelp
I still like the museum and attached art museum. The art decent tour with Teri was great and I was turned off art in grade 8. I learned so much and wanted to revisit what she showed us. But today the museum was closed, all of it, due to a special event. We were just there Saturday and you would think that signs would be prominently posted on outside doors as well as where you purchase your tickets if the museum will be closed when it usually isnt. . During the summer, the museum is open daily which they told me on Saturday. So we took the long bus ride over on Tuesday with 2 relatively hot long walks only to find the doors barred by a piece of wood. No sign so we visitors were forced to communicate among ourselves. So I would reconfirm hours before going over. One of the visitors had purchased tickets in advance. I assume they will be issued a refund. Still 2 hours for us wasted going to and from in this heat. Sadly we are leaving early tomorrow.

Yelp
Visited two days in a row--that's how much I enjoyed it! However, I still only saw a small part of the museum because I spent too much time looking at the dinosaurs and the stones. It's fascinating to see so many REAL dinosaurs fossils. I'd visit every time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! I was impressed by the animal specimens in the collection here - everything from bugs to bears! The dinosaur fossils, Minerals and gems were also impressive. This along with the Carnegie Art Museum was great as both museums offered something for people of all ages. The dinosaurs, animals, and gems were a big hit with the kids! And you can't beat the two for one price.
google avatar

Julio H.

Yelp
There are great things to see here. We came to see the dinosaurs but were pleasantly surprised when we went to the gemology collection where we found many types of minerals and gemstones. I wouldn't say it compares to other renowned collections in the country, but it is a very good collection. The dinosaur floor was also very nice, as well as the chronological/regional exhibit. It is a good place to "waste time".

Yelp
We are so fortunate to have such a cultural phenomenon and historical artifacts here in our city. Thank goodness for the Carnegie family. It's really incredible that they were able to fund the start of the exploration of dinosaur fossils like we know it today and spread the knowledge around to the whole planet. This museum has so much more than you can take in in one single day. Maybe try to plot your journey first. Go for what you think you might like the most such as the gemstones or the bird hall. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
The Natural History Museum has a $25 entrance fee but it's attached to the Art Museum and between the two of them, I think the admission is worth the cost. The NH museum is definitely bigger than the art portion and you can easily spending a couple of hours walking around and looking at all the exhibits if not longer. They have something for everyone and my favorites are their gem hall and the dinosaurs. They do have their own gift shop as well as the fossil fuel cafe located in the NH section. I've been quite a few times and I would still come back!!
google avatar

Will W.

Yelp
We spent the entire day in the collections of art and natural history. Both museums are connected so you can get a mix of art and natural history. The special exhibits are wonderful as well and the regular installations. Staff are friendly and informative. We left for lunch and came back.

Yelp
First time here in many years and was awed by the changes that had been made...the dinosaur room impressed me the most and Carnegie now has a guide stationed there letting us know that the T Rex on the left was the first one uncovered in the world..she gave grandson a claw to hold ( he thought it was a horn) and a piece of petrified poop...spent a good 2 hours ...a little disappointed that the Egyptian Room was closed but gives me something to look forward to on next visit...
google avatar

Yelp
We mainly stopped in because my husband heard they have a dinosaur display and he's still a massive fan. Carnegie exceeded my expectations. There is so much to see and look at. We spend 3 hours and still felt like we did't see everything. The natural history part has so much. The highlights were the dinosaur bone display, the animal display and the Eskimo exhibit. The museum is very interactive which includes looking at items under a microscope, pushing buttons to learn fun facts and more. They had an Ancient Egypt exhibit and we were a little bummed that it was closed. We also enjoyed exploring the different art galleries. There were so many painting to look at. I'm pretty sure they gave private tours you can take and they go into more details about the artwork. The price is a little steep at $25 a ticket but they do offer discounts which we were able to be used so we saved $10.
google avatar

Yelp
A nice museum but definitely felt like it was for bigger kids. The bone digging area was closed so we couldn't do it. They also have a rule that you can't wear bags on your back so we had to wear our backpack on our chest or carry it like a briefcase which was hard with carrying a toddler on top of that. Could definitely have more for kids to do. Cafeteria food downstairs was actually really good and affordable!

Yelp
I have been going to this Museum for almost 35 years and it hasn't changed much. It is still worth seeing. Kids love it and it keeps them busy! We always enjoy the gems and dinosaur bones. It's nice to see the old architecture of the building also. All of the staff was helpful and friendly. They have plenty of elevators to make exploring easier. They also have a small cafe and coffee shop.

Yelp
Loved my time at the Natural Science Museum! Could have spent the entire day on the activities and exploring the museum. I was in awe of the Hillman Hall for Minerals and Stones and spent so much time admiring their extensive collection. I also loved the Hall of Botany and putting my herb knowledge and sense of smell to the test. It's so kid friendly, thoughtfully laid out and interactive which I appreciated! Will be back and next time I'll bring my walking shoes and my water bottle because there's so much to see and not enough time!

Yelp
4.5 stars. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History (CMNH) was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1895. It shares a building with the Carnegie Museum of Art, and when you purchase a ticket, you gain admission to both museums. Tickets can be purchased through the museum's website, and prices range from $0 for members and infants to $25 for non-member adults. Prices are discounted for children, students, and senior citizens. A parking garage is available and costs $10. For many years, I have visited the CMNH off and on. For my most recent visit, I purchased a timed ticket through the museum's website, and I showed it to a courteous employee upon entry. Current exhibitions include dinosaurs, birds, North American wildlife, African wildlife, Arctic life, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, minerals and gems, botany, American Indians, ancient Egypt, etcetera. I recognized many exhibits from my visits in previous years, and these exhibits were in good condition but could perhaps be slightly updated. A couple exchibits were closed so conservators could clean or prepare future displays. As with my previous visit, I got lost in the maze of rooms, and I had to ask employees where to go! Tip: To access the dinosaur hall, walk through the gift shop. In the gift shop, I bought a couple of items. The cashier did not say hello or thank you and did not give me a bag, but she did ask if I was a member, and she did accurately ring up my purchase. The museum also has the Fossil Fuels restaurant, which sells salads, pizzas, sandwiches, cookies, and other simple foods. Furthermore, the museum rents space for private events.

Yelp
What a great museum! I really enjoyed the fact that you get two museums in one. Plus, they had some artwork from epic artists. My parents don't go to art museums, so it was cool to take my mom and have her see some famous paintings. It was also cool to see some huge dinosaur fossils at the same time. It's a large museum and it took us a couple of hours to make our way through. I enjoyed it a lot and I believe we hit all the exhibits. If not, another visit would be very welcomed. Great museum!

Yelp
This is a fantastic museum! I knew it was going to be cool, but this place exceeded out expectations. Our young sons loved the dinosaur exhibit and pretty much everywhere we took them in this place. Honestly, as an adult I want to go back and just spend the entire day there. It's definitely worth the visit and money!
google avatar

Meagan G.

Yelp
Incredible museum! Loved getting to watch experts doing their profession behind glass in the ancient Egypt exhibit. This made the experience so much more personal and it added a lot of value to the experience of seeing preserved history.

Yelp
Son and I were looking to kill some time before the Pirates game, so we decided to come here. This was definitely worth the trip. My 18 year old son even said this was a five star rating. Lots of interesting things to see ranging from numerous dinosaurs to lots of preserved animals, plants, and insects. Learned a lot and a special shout out to staff member Andrew who provided a lot of great information. Recommended spot for people of all ages. Easily can spend 2-3 hours here.

Yelp
How have I not left a review for CMNH yet? Like the three other museums that make up the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, CMNH has a great reputation around Pittsburgh. With activities and installations for all ages and community days and free activities throughout the year, they make a great destination for the whole family. The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History are connected, so if you buy admission to one, you've gotten into both. It can be tempting to start by heading through the gift shop directly toward the Dinosaurs in Their Time hall, but I highly recommend starting on the art museum side, following the galleries through to the grand staircase, exploring a few of the halls there (like the ones dedicated to ancient Egypt or American Indians) before cutting through the Hall of Birds to get over into the Natural History Museum proper. If that sounds like a lot, don't worry. You can pick up a map to find that route yourself, or just ask museum staff. Everyone is super friendly, and they can tell you how to get where you're trying to go :)

Yelp
Decades ago I lived in Pittsburgh. It was the first city I lived in and I loved living in Oakland. I had fond memories of going to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and enjoying my time. The only other city I ever visited near this time was DC and I also enjoyed theirs, so basically I took for granted these museums because I just assumed every city has these type of museums. They do not. Upon having a chance to visit again I desperately wanted to return to the Carnegie Museum to see if it was as awesome as I remembered. It was! My friends and I spent the day there walking slowly through each exhibit and stopping at the cafe for a break. I love the fossils and anything dinosaur related. I smiled listening to an employee speak passionately about his area of expertise and the museum's archived material. The geology exhibit was much more interesting to me as an adult than it was twenty odd years ago. We walked to the art side and took in the paintings and exhibits as well. Everything was so well done from being clearly labeled to interesting exhibits. This is a fantastic museum and well worth visiting a hundred times over!

Yelp
A day well spent! You should definitely set aside at least half a day for the museum. It's connected to the art museum so you could easily split your day half/half between each. We had about 4 hours at the museum and we pretty much finished looking through the entire natural history side of things. However, it was nearing closing time and I wanted to take a look at the art museum, so we kind of did a speedrun through the last natural history exhibit we had yet to see. Even so, that only left us with twenty-isn minutes to see the art side of things which was a bit of a bummer. The natural history museum is filled with giant dinosaur fossils, beautiful rocks and minerals, impressive dioramas, and more. It's a place that can keep any age interested. There are three floors and we spent the most time looking through dinosaurs and rocks. It's crazy to imagine how so many of the beautiful rocks on display were formed naturally. My favorite was the glowing rocks. As for the dinosaurs, they're almost always the most iconic parts of natural history museums. I liked how the museum allowed visitors to peer through some glass into a lab. No one was working at the time, but it was cool to see components of the current fossil project on display. In addition to dinosaur fossils, there were also cool exhibits detailing the evolution of animals to the ones we see today. Overall, I wish I had gone to the museum earlier in the day because I really need to come back and explore some more. It's a fascinating place, great for all ages.

Yelp
I went to see the dinosaur's history with a few children. The Carnegie Museum does a great job with the stories, information, and visualizations. My visit in February 2024 had a few closures such as the children's area and Egyptian exhibit. Takeaway- pack light for the visit. Bags are allowed but must be worn on the front of your body "to avoid knocking anything down". So many thoughts about this but it would be an easier visit to go bag-free if possible.
google avatar

Yelp
One of Pittsburgh's finest gems!! If you haven't checked out this museum yet, what are you waiting for?? This has everything kids and adults would enjoy. My personal favorites are the dinosaur exhibit and the Egyptian exhibit. You really feel like you're heading back into time when visiting here. Make sure you leave yourself enough time because you could truly spend hours and hours here!! The food is a meh to me. But I don't come here for the food- I come for the artifacts! Can't wait until my next visit!
google avatar

Yelp
We really enjoyed this chicago has nothing compared to this they have two rex here the gem and mineral exhibit was by far the best collection we have seen and we are rock hounds and owners of rocks and gems worth it to see the gems alone
google avatar

Yelp
It is in the same building (art museum), you just pass through the hall and you are in the history section. It is one of 4 Carnegie Institute museums located in Pittsburgh. If you love dinosaurs, nature, wildlife, and history, then this is definitely the one to put near the top of your bucket list. The museum's central exhibit is a collection of authentic dinosaur fossils and some reproductions, including a Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. most well known for its expansive dinosaur fossil collection, an impressive 1300+ piece mineral, and gem collection, and dozens of realistic dioramas spotlighting wildlife in North America and Africa One of the finest collections and displays of gems and minerals in the world can be found at CMNH. Entry fee: Adults $19.95, children 3-18 $11.95, under 2 free. At the same fee, you can also see an art museum. Parking: We did street side parking, its free on Sunday

Yelp
When my parents were in town we decided to go. Since living in the pittsburgh area for 3 years it's something I haven't done so I was pretty excited. I don't know what I was expecting but it certainly exceeded it. We only did the Natural History portion but there was so much to see. It took us a majority of the afternoon to just do that. My mom had a blast taking selfies with the dinosaurs and my dad enjoyed the history bits. I'm already trying to plan my next trip because I really wanna see the art side of the museum.
google avatar

Declan K.

Yelp
i love this Museum! I've been here since my grandparents took me when I was a little kid. It is always how to special place in my heart. It is very exciting and you can see lots of things from ancient Egypt to the Native Americans to the dinosaurs. The only thing I would change about it is that they should change up their exhibits every now and then they're always the same! It was cool that they had the New Egyptian exhibit.
google avatar

Jordon K.

Yelp
The history side of the museum offered a lot of interesting exhibits such as the dinosaur and North American Wildlife exhibit. It was very difficult to navigate around even while using the map. The gift shop in the history portion was lackluster at best. Very cool stuff in the actual museum though! Sadly the exhibition where you get to dig for fossils was closed :(

Cassidy H.

Yelp
What a wonderful museum! Clean, organized, full of meaningful exhibits that all ages can enjoy. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and available. Parking was easy. So much to see and do make sure you have lots of time.

Yelp
Oh my goodness...The DINOSAURS! I was captivated and the displays helped visualize what life for them resembled. DINOSAURS IN THEIR TIME and the CRETACEOUS SEAWAY exhibits was one of the highlight of the trip. It was absolutely the best dinosaur exhibits I have ever seen. Top 2 or 3 without a doubt. There was also the Hillman Hall of Minerals & Gems all the vibrant colors. There were roughly 1,300 specimens from all over the world. It was amazing and I even texted and reached out to my friend who is a geologist and Earth Sciences professor and shared some images and shared thoughts. Now let me tell you about the Art of the Diorama exhibit. It reminded me of if humans when extinct or if we were on display in our "natural" habitats. But it was all animals in those well placed classic scenes. It was really cool through. There were 7 of these and they look just like what you would have seen in the 30's. It also had old wood mahogany furniture, and even a chandelier. I quite enjoyed this exhibit but I would have added some of those botched amateur taxidermy animals in the mix too. Fortunately, it was not in charge and it was a classic turn of the century exhibit. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History was such a outstanding and it's with Museum of Art. It was a fun and long visit but was such a great addition to our trip.

Yelp
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History has so many wonderful permanent and traveling exhibits. One of the most unique and amazing exhibits is the dinosaur exhibit. It's fun for adults and children alike. It is so natural and so well done. You really feel like you're back in time. The dinosaurs are so life like. They even made the scene so realistic. You learn so much about the period and all the animals in that period. The hall of architecture is also a very cool exhibit. There are castings of all different historical places all over Europe primarily in Italy, Greece, France. They are so cool. You feel like you're there. One of the best things is the Christmas Trees and presipio (nativity scene and one of the biggest in the world) they put up in the hall of architecture. Volunteers have been creating themes and decorating them for I believe 35 years. I love seeing what they come up with. They also have events there. One year my friend and I celebrated Festivus (made up Seinfeld Holiday). The Christmas before covid, they had a fun Christmas Event where we did fun crafts. There are also permanent exhibits where you can learn about ancient Egypt, indigenous people, nature, etc. If you love to learn, this is a wonderful place to check out.

Yelp
Beautiful museum! Filled with a ton of information and at great price! I moved to Pittsburgh over a year ago and have not been to any museums around here. After visiting Chicago and seeing their museums, I decided we should go to museums here more. Loved it! This one is so much better than Chicago's history museum. Such cool stuff! My favorite is the dinosaurs and all the animal exhibits. It was only $20 each to enter and we paid $40 each in Chicago to see half of the amount of stuff!! The architecture is beautiful inside. I loved the greek and egyptian artifacts as well! I took Latin and learned all about the greek gods and goddesses for 5 years!! - middle school to high school and this made my 14 year old inner child so happy! Such a treat. We will definitely be back again and again. Also the price includes both Art AND history museums!

Yelp
Visited here for the first time a couple weeks ago for their Museum After Dark event. The museum is packed with exhibits ranging from Minerals & Gemstones to Wildlife and of course the Dinosaur fossils & bones. There's definitely a lot to see here and the addition of event specific items more than a few hours is needed to take it all in. Parking is convenient and affordable and well worth the admission price.

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed this museum as my husband and I spent the day here. There were various displays of dinosaur bones in which some included the actual bones of the dinosaur, there were fossil digging available, and many learning opportunities of different species of animals. My most favorite part of the museum was the gem collection. There were many gems and stones from around the world that were on display. Couldn't recommend this museum more!
google avatar

Dani J.

Yelp
I think this is a great museum and I remember loving it as a kid. There were some interactive exhibits. I haven't taken my kids there in awhile but that sounds like a great idea!

Yelp
I visit the Carnegie Museums very often, however I haven't walked through the Natural History side of the museum in years. We were looking for something to do last week when it was freezing outside. A visit to the museum is my favorite thing to do in the winter time. I am a member (which I HIGHLY recommend), so it is free every time you go. The membership costs about $100 and you can put one other person's name on the dual membership. It's a great deal. They require timed tickets due to covid, so you just pick the time you'd like to visit, type in your membership ID, and then you are good to go. The line for their parking garage ($7 or $8) was really long, so we opted for street parking right on Craig Street. We went on a Saturday at 2 pm and it was very busy at the ticket line, but the museum itself was not overwhelming. We headed toward the dinosaur exhibit to start. Pro tip! They have lockers in the basement of the History museum. You put in 50 cents and can shove all your coats and layers in there while you explore. I always have a backpack in the summer if I'm walking, or a big heavy coat in the winter. This makes your experience much more comfortable. They also have hangers if you would just like to hang your coat. My favorite part of the museum used to be the Egyptian section. This time it felt like we walked through it in 5 minutes. Maybe it seemed much bigger when I was a little kid lol! The Hall of Birds and other animals throughout the museum definitely creep me out, but it is very educational. You could spend all day reading the notes on each exhibit. We did a walk-through of the museum in about an hour and a half. I definitely recommend visiting!
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
Just an FYI: your ticket to the Museum of Natural History also lets you into the Museum of Arts (and vice versa) because the two buildings are connected! I did not realize that until speaking to someone at the informational desk, so that was a lovely surprise. I do care more for the Natural History, so with the 1.5 hour time I had to explore, I was able to check out the architecture, mineral, dinosaur, bird hall, and North America exhibits. I also even walked to the Arts section to look at Van Gough and Monet paintings that were installed. I'm sure you could spend much more than 1.5 hours looking at all these exhibits, especially since there are lots of explanations/learning experiences that you can read about at every exhibit. Definitely a place you could spend all day at (not to mention also stopping by the Museum of Arts). I especially think that kids would have a great time here -- there are many kid-friendly exhibits where you can touch and experience the minerals, taxidermy animals, etc. I also had fun checking these out!
google avatar

Yelp
Endless displays of dinosaurs, taxidermy, minerals, plus more! The breath of exhibits was rather impressive and offers sufficient categories that would pique the different interests of folks. I thought the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems was neat, as well as the recreated dioramas of animals in their habitats. A $20 ticket covers the Carnegie Museum of Art too as exhibitions are entwined within the same space. Those who are Bank of America cardholders can obtain complimentary admission during the first weekend of each month. I had booked a Thursday 2 PM ticket and was granted entry despite coming in an hour early. Unfortunately my visit collided with school field trips, so the museum was packed with students yelling and running around everywhere. Hence I primarily did a walkthrough and left after 1.5 hours. Security guards are stationed in many sections and enforce that backpacks be worn on the front.

Yelp
Nice collection of fossils and gemstones and a great way to spend a couple hours but compared to some other museums in the area it's not as hands on and interactive for kids so if you have children who thrive in that kind of setting this particular museum isn't for you. We took our three kids there ( 11,6 &1) and while they liked looking at some of the displays by the second hour of walking and looking but not doing or touching they were ready to go home. Some things we wish we had known before coming: 1) you can't have any bags that sit on your back so our diaper bag had to be hand held. Not sure the difference but a cross body messenger bag was ok. 2)the same goes for baby wearing/carrying. Our 1 year old got too tired and needed to be carried but we were told that she could only be carried on our front- not any other way. Had we known we would have brought in the stroller which was allowed but we erroneously thought the stroller would be a problem in this type of museum. The workers here all seemed stuffy, too serious and unfriendly- it's like they were mad people came to visit. I guess we got spoiled by the welcoming and friendly disposition of the museum workers in other museums in the city (Heinz, children's museum, science center) Overall a nice museum but maybe not for families with small children and if you bring little kids anyway make sure your diaper bag is not a backpack and be sure to bring a stroller.

Yelp
I love museums. I can admit I'm a bit of a nerd...I embrace it. So when Wifey said she wanted to visit the Carnegie Museum of Natural History I was all in. We drove across town to get there and luckily found a parking spot right near the entrance. After buying our tickets ($20 each plus an extra $5 each for the current Reptile Display) we headed over to see the dinosaur exhibits. From the time I was a little kid I've always been fascinated by dinosaurs and this museum has really incredible displays. We also hit the geology exhibit, the post-dinosaur and ice age exhibits, birds, reptiles (also a big favorite), and the American Indian exhibit. I'm not feeling great so that's where we ended the day. All of the displays were very well done and informative. The American Indian exhibit had a huge emphasis on the Inuit and I would have liked to have seen more on the other tribes-especially the Plains Indians...but there's only so much space. Loved this museum and I just wish I took more photos.

Yelp
Really cool museum housed in a beautiful building! Some of the animal dioramas are a bit dated, but you can tell they're doing their best to update & engage visitors of all ages. The rocks & minerals collection is especially stunning. There are thousands of specimens spread across 6 or 7 rooms, with extremely detailed descriptions. Admission here is pretty expensive ($20 for adults) but it also covers entrance to the Carnegie Museum of Art next door. Unfortunately I got here kind of late so I didn't get to explore both! I believe they also offer free admission for students of local Pittsburgh universities.

Yelp
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Museum of Art share one large, beautiful building, so when you get your ticket to visit one ($20/adult), you also get admission to the other. This was such a bonus to me, since I love art museums but my husband loves to geek out at a rock/mineral/gem exhibit at a natural history museum. I'll be honest - natural history museums aren't really my thing. They tend to have exactly the same exhibits/collections - dinosaurs, stuffed animal specimens, rocks, etc. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History's Hillman of Minerals and Gems (and the Wertz Gallery of Gems and Jewelry) was much larger than the average, however, and my geology loving husband really enjoyed it. What made it better than the average minerals/gems collection for me was one volunteer docent (I can't remember her name) who walked around and shared fun facts and made me interested in something I normally wouldn't be! We paid a bit to park, too, so it's not a cheap museum ($20/adult plus parking), but you could spend a few hours here and make it worth the fee! Definitely worth a visit if you love a natural history museum, and you'll get an art museum with your visit, too!

Yelp
One of my favorite places in the city. Beautiful building full of amazing pieces. We're incredibly blessed to have a museum of this caliber in our city. I've had a membership for several years. It's pricey but I make sure I visit often to make it worth it. Key exhibits are the dinosaurs (of course) and the Egypt exhibit (which is gorgeous and even has a real mummy!) I've been to several events here and each one has been incredible. They have super science Saturday's with different themes and activities for kids to explore. Best ones are their Egg Hunt and Holidays Around the World. Adult events have included a winter festival with an ice rink INSIDE the museum and several very cool Halloween events. The traveling exhibits are usually very interesting and educational. My only complaint would be that they charge members for these exhibits (at a discounted rate). Seems excessive when I already pay them $300 a year plus pay for special events but it is what it is.

Yelp
This is a world class museum. The exhibits are well designed, well maintained, informative and fun for any age. I have been coming here for more years than I care to admit and always find something new to draw me in. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. While there are a few more restrictions and some interactive displays removed due to the pandemic, still rates 5 stars.

Yelp
I went here on December 9, 2023 and it was one of the coolest experiences. The staff was very nice and the displays were so interesting. This museum is a neat place for people of all ages.

Yelp
Dear Yelpers I don't think I can say enough about how much fun the kid in me had at this place! This is probably every child's fantasy with giant bones, big teeth, and cool animals everywhere! While you can spend virtually all day in the museum part of the building, I recommend checking out the architecture part as well. The statues and replicas of buildings are things of beauty and wonder! You won't want to miss out!! Your friendly neighborhood foodie

Yelp
10 million stars. There is a lot to see here, and you could spend an entire day here if you like to read all the signs and such. I like the Egypt stuff the best. I got tickets to the special Dinosaur Armour exhibit. I had the entire exhibit to myself (thanks COVID!) and I enjoyed it. Going during COVID is a very peaceful time at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. With the reduced capacity and metered entry, it allows for some semblance of peacefulness, like a church. It meant fewer crazy children running around and overall less noise and chaos, which works perfectly for my tastes. The Polar World Hall is purposely kept very cold, I imagine for effect. I would advise against that because it basically means people just want to do the skiddadle out of there because they're too cold. The Egypt room was not kept arid and extra hot, so no need to make the Polar World Hall extra cold, Carnegie Museum people! Plus, you are probably ironically burning unnecessary fossil fuels for this, I would imagine. I stopped at the gift shop and picked up a few extra memories for myself. Great show Carnegie Museum!

Yelp
Wonderful time spent here at the museum! The check in staff were friendly and had a great deal of information as to what was going on today! We saw many displays and watched some videos. Parking was reasonably priced and easily exit out of the facility.
