Part butcher shop, part taco spot, Coalcoman serves classic fillings on warm tortillas with a self-serve salsa bar. Featured in the Idaho Statesman’s taco guide, it’s a dependable stop for tacos, tortas, and menudo.

Google
I had the menudo and a couple of tacos—the food was pretty good! The place gets pretty packed, especially on weekends. Since it's not a large space, you might end up sharing a table with other people. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Google
Posole was salty. Adovada didn't have that great of flavor and it was too chunky for my tacos. Galdo de Res didn't have much vegetables to it. Service was great though.

Google
Very good for their price point. The service was fast. The tamal was very well shaped and the right amount of masa. The carnitas tacos was very very good. The rice and refried beans was tasty but the beans was a bit watery. Over all I would recommend this place to eat at. PS they also have a market with a butchers area.

Google
Best in town!!! Hands down the closest thing to authentic this side of the border!! Food is top notch, the employees are always smilling and very polite. Will always recommend to people wanting good quality mexican food. Thanks for being here!!!

Audrey

Google
Authentic (you can get tripe/intestine, lengua/tongue, cabeza/head, etc. as well as your more familiar meats) and delicious! I've been here a few times and even tried to bring my parents during a visit (they happen to be closed on Wednesdays...bummer!). Last time, I got the al pastor burrito. Unfortunately the meat was dry, but as I've had their food before I know it's not always like that. They are really helpful and service oriented. It has a Mexican store connected to it and they sell Mexican treats, breads, and drinks at the counter where you order your food. They also have a salsa bar. So good! The salsas are spicy--which I like--just be aware if you can't handle much heat. They're located in a little strip mall so there's parking, but it can be pretty full at meal times (a good sign the food is good!)

Google
Finally tried this place for the first time today. Wish we hadn't waited do long. Everything was so good. There was a bit of a wait, but that's to be expected when you're serving awesome food! They were pretty packed, but it was well worth the wait. Will definitely be back especially since we luckily only live a few minutes away.

Google
Picked up a few pounds of pre marinated carne asada to cook at home. The meat was excellent. They also have a small restaurant or you can take it to go. Highly recommend if you're looking for really good authentic Mexican food.

Darren

Google
This is an excellent and authentic taqueria that's located in a modest strip mall. I thought the food was great! I had a mix of different tacos- carne asada, al pastor, and carnitas- and they were all delicious. My friend said his burrito was very good. The prices were appropriate and affordable. There are a variety of salsas and other condiments that were very tasty. The service was friendly, and they have a bunch of different drinks that you take yourself from fridges. There is a small store with fresh Mexican products and a carniceria attached to the restaurant. If you want good Mexican food in Boise, this is the correct choice.

Yelp
I love it here. Great food, hard working staff. The posole is amazing. I studied abroad in Michoacán and it's nice to have the food from this region again. We like to come here for lunch and then get some meat from the grocery side to grill at home. It's amazing. Don't miss out on their prepared guacamole and salsas in the refrigerated case by the check stand.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Food good and a lot of verity I recommend the menudo... You can come in just for drinks as well
google avatar

Mandi S.

Yelp
Absolutely love stopping in here for reasonably priced great food. Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

Ruby H.

Yelp
All the food here is amazing, the service is fast and everyone is so friendly, definitely try their menudo and quesadillas, and huaraches
google avatar

Yelp
10/10 Incredible Carnitas! Their quesadilla is a game changer! It's a gigantic handmade corn tortilla, cooked with cheese inside and broke open and stuffed with whatever delicious meat you choose. Their birria is fantastic! There really isn't anything on the menu is not absolutely delicious
google avatar

Dun G.

Yelp
Amazing food. Great prices. Pretty well stocked market attached. What more could you want? The place is pretty dang clean and tidy and the staff are always amazing too. This is the ONLY taco place in Boise to me.
google avatar

Marllin G.

Yelp
Carnicería Coalcoman in Boise ...soooooo good!!!! Salsas they have were also delicious. This spot is a meat market and restaurant. Worth trying it out. You won't regret it. Birria was 10/10. Came with home made Tortillas. Carne Asada Torta 10/10. Super huge torta. Super delicious too. Carne Asada tacos 10/10. Meat was excellent.

Yelp
This is a real gem.... tacos are very good, the prices are friendly, and the menu is extensive especially for a place that from the outside looks like a veritable hole in the wall. But inside is a comfortable albeit spartan dining area with an adjacent market. The servers were friendly and service was quick. We had a number of different tacos, including Asada, Pollo, Carnitas, and Al Pastor. I would say the Carnitas took the blue ribbon. A generous serving. I also really enjoyed the salsa bar that is available for dressing up your tacos or whatever. I look forward to returning and trying the enchiladas, posole, and menudo, which apparently they have every day .

Yelp
Looking for authenic Mexican food in the Treasure Valley? Look no further than Carniceria Coalcoman. Great menu of recipes handed down thru the family. Everything you would ever want to eat in a Mexican restaurant. Speedy service and great prices - what more would anyone ask for? The location really has no street presence. It is tucked away in a run down strip shopping area. You may be able to spot the El Rico Pan Panaderia on Fairview. The panaderia and the carniceria are owned by the same brothers. It is just east of M.A.S.S. auto sales and across Fairview from KTVB Channel 7. I have tried a number of their soups and tacos. Their tamales at $16 per dozen are great deal. Check out their website and scan the menu. If you don't know what the items are, then you don't know authenic Mexican food when you see it. Problem? You should stick to something more familiar like Taco Bell. Try my favorite, Menudo - with 4 handmade tortillas $9.99. Grab a $2 beer from the cooler and away you go. Adios

Yelp
Pretty great Mexican food for Boise. Definitely more of an authentic vibe and authentic tasting food.
google avatar

Steven N.

Yelp
This place has one side that is a small Mexican grocery and the other that is a crowded, authentic, affordable restaurant. Both sides are quite worn, extremely basic, and not very clean. Indeed, I was surprised to see on the yelp website that there are very few food safety violations. The inspector must have been blind or didn't consider anything in the dining room. The floors and tables are dirty and the part of the kitchen that can be seen from the cash register looks like a great prospect for a 'Restaurant Impossible' rehab, the reality tv show. Don't bring your newborn baby here. Do bring industrial work shoes with deep rubber treads. Despite the grease and grime, the menu is broad and the food is tasty. There's also a small, gross-looking salsa bar with seasonings and salsas that are quite good. And the crowd of workpersons that pack every seat confirms that, hygiene-be-damned, if you want a good quesadilla bring some Purel and Clorox wipes and come on over.

Yelp
I wanted authentic Mexican food, tacos with head and tongue meat, burritos with beans, the real deal. I ordered tongue and head meat tacos, they were bland, the burrito was full of tasteless rice and melted american cheese. Disappointing!
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Beans need some work! Wet,flavorless.. rice too. Orders #3 crispy tacos.. got street tacos! They have a salsa bar.. ok. Nice ambiance for a taco bar.
google avatar

Coraline J.

Yelp
This is where we also get our carne asada to make at home! Its delicious! Also love their burritos. We haven't had much else on the menu, but will try something different next time. Customer service is always friendly!
google avatar

Em J.

Yelp
It was just ok. I liked the tortillas that it all came on. It was a build your taco type of deal. So you get the meat only and they have a station to add whatever you want on them.
google avatar

Tiffany N.

Yelp
Delicious!! I was very impressed with the gordita. My friends had carnitas tacos and said the meat was delicious.
google avatar

Calli R.

Yelp
Food is delicious!!! We ordered a dozen tamales, rice/beans, and a burrito. Everything was absolutely delicious and fresh. It was very busy when we went but was worth the line. I also got some pico and guacamole, which was delicious, I don't think you could go wrong with anything you ordered. The parking lot sucks but it's manageable. I definitely would recommend it.
google avatar

Yelp
Yelpers looking for "vibe" (whatever the hell that is) stay away. This is where locals come for real Mexican food. See photos of the naked tacos. All people are welcome at common tables. I struck up a conversation with a local who has lived here for 45 years since coming from Durango, MX as a young boy. Extensive menu will be explored on revisits.

Yelp
Best tacos and traditional Mexican (Michoacán style) food in town. Coalcoman's isn't for people who think orange cheddar cheese, black olives and iceberg lettuce belongs on Mexican food. This is traditional not catering to people who've never had real Mexican food. This little Carniceria does it right. The tacos are excellent and they have a salsa bar that only makes it better. I've had the camarones, pescado, al pastor, chili verde, chorizo, lengua, cessina and more. I've never been disappointed and truly enjoy their food. They have a restaurant layout where you grab yourself a beer once you order and they bring your food out to you. Order at the counter and then have a look next door in the store. It's great! Piñatas? Hell yeah. Seasonings and dried chilies? Yep. Food: 8/10 Beverage: 7/10 (Beer and wine only but it's hella cheap!) Atmosphere: 4:10 Concept: 7/10

Yelp
Carniceria Coalcoman is a great find with some great food in very humble surroundings. I have always said that the best Mexican food will always be found in no frills type places like this one. Mexican food, at least to me, is a food that thrives in humble surroundings. It is a culinary masterpiece best served not on fine china, but rather simple plates. Mexican food is one of my favorite cuisines and this place does a great job. I had a burrito and I definitely would recommend it.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, you've landed on the right business. I stumbled upon this Mexican food restaurant after I was looking for a Panaderia (which is in the same shopping center), and WOW was this a FIND! It's not only a Carniceria but it's a restaurant and a Mexican goods store too. I had lunch there, ordered carne asada tacos, burrito and purchased their ceviche and home made salsa to-go. After my lunch, I thought if the food was this good then I have to buy their carne asada (arrachera preparada) to grill at home it's already seasoned for you. AHHHHH a touch of Southern California right here in Boise. If you're missing the authentic flavors of authentic Mexican Restaurant from Cali or Mexico, you gotta try this place! Trust.
google avatar

Maribel A.

Yelp
My go to for Mexican food! Large portions and personable customer service:) always clean and the hot sauce bar is my favorite part
google avatar

Nina C.

Yelp
Great little find! I had a big carnitas burrito and two street tacos. My friends had the torta and the gordita -- both looked delicious! My friend, who goes there often, reports that they make their own bread for the torta and it definitely looked fresh and delightful. I would definitely go back for the prepared food, and I'd like to check out the marinated meats, too.
google avatar

Yelp
This little place is a gem. It made my husband feel at home and he is a chef that knows good food. We are visiting family all the way from Northern California and I am so glad we found this place! The service was great and the food was delicious. We had tamales, huaraches, tacos, quesadillas and all were with handmade tortillas. Very authentic and well worth a visit. The salsas were the best I've had in a long time. They have blended salsas as well as salsas made with a molcahete. We will definitely be back!!! Oh and next door is the market if you want to buy meats etc. Thank you guys!! I want to hug the lady from the kitchen so she knows how happy we were.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for authentic Mexican food. Have a hard time finding it in the area. I asked a Hispanic girl at work she said she only comes here. Work in Nampa so I went to that location. It's a market as well as a restaurant but don't let that bother you. Got the burrito and it was great! Seasoned well and had great taste. Love how the mix the rice with the red spice sauce last time I had that I was in Mexico. My go to place for sure.
google avatar

Jann S.

Yelp
Carnitas burrito is fire!!! I'm so happy I found this place, since we recently moved here from LA (Cali) it's been hard to find a good Mexican place that sells bomb Mexican food like they do back home... this one nails it! Service is amazing too, makes you feel right at home! Oh and the quesadillas are made with tortillas hechas a mano.... wow, delicious!!
google avatar

Blake S.

Yelp
Little hidden market restaurant, some nice authentic items. All the tacos were great and staff was lovely

Jamison C.

Yelp
YOU HAVE NOT LIVED until you have tried their Beer Cheese Soup. Folks, this is not a false alarm. This is a call to action by your taste buds to get down here for a pint of awesome beer and Beer Cheese Soup that will simply change your soul. I can't state it more simply. Big Dawg Jay
google avatar

Anisa S.

Yelp
Best Enchiladas I've ever had! I came here for lunch today and had fish enchiladas, which weren't on the menu, but they happily made them anyway, and my brother had an enormous bean burrito filled with all the expected burrito goodies as well as fish tacos that were very flavorful. Their salsa bar has a wide variety of delicious salsas. Everyone was very polite and the food was made quickly.
google avatar

Jodi R.

Yelp
Most authentic Mexican food in Boise! Ordered Huarache with carnitas and a side of beans and rice, FANTASTIC!!! It is next level delicious
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
Tough to find unless you know where you're going, but this little Mexican eatery is worth the effort to seek out! Great tacos at wonderful prices: 1.25-2.50. Superb meat with great flavor. I like the asada, carnitas and al pastor. My sister enjoys the lengua. There's a reason the tacos are just meat and a thickish tortilla. You don't need much else. But if you want to doll up your meal, there is a decent salsa bar with several offerings available. While you're there, pick up some chicharron or Jarritos to go. Friendly staff and a happy vibe help off-set the dated strip mall feel. I hadn't been here since it changed its name from Nuestro Pueblo, but I'm so glad I ventured back. Very good, very reasonably priced, and a fun find for Boise.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
This Boise gem is what used to operate as Nuestro Pueblo. It's the same owners, same great food and meat market. They always had the Carniceria Caolcoman banner out front but went by the other name for a long time. I like to order the daily special, three pork carnitas tacos with beans and rice. The carnitas are wonderful, unlike the uninspired pork cubes without any real flavor that many other places serve. Here, you can taste the difference. They also offer several kinds of homemade salsas, which are all very good. I also like their meat market, which features thin cuts of beef and pork. I don't know about the beef, but they butcher pigs brought to the store whole. Unlike most grocery store pigs, which have had all of their fat bred out of them, making theme dry and without much flavor, the pork chops here are like the ones I grew up on, very flavorful. And I like thin-cut chops much better than thick ones. The workers in this family-owned business are friendly and they're happy to see you. This is one of my favorite eateries in Boise.

Yelp
Had high expectations for this place because of how many people were there eating, but the food did not deliver. I ordered a carne asada burrito and asked him what came on it and he said meat, rice, beans, cheese, and sour cream. Right off I felt trolled by his answer because PUH-LEASE... no respecting Mexican resturant serves cheese and sour cream standard on a carne asada burrito! I'm white yes, but treat me like a Mexican, it doesnt mean I want sour cream and cheese on everything!! I want Mexican food. I grew up in LA for goodness sake. I told him please leave the dairy off, as well as the beans and add cilantro and onions. Anyways, needless to say the burrito was super filled with rice and dried, tough pieces of carne asada. Bad. Not tasty at all. So far my search for the best carne asada in Boise goes to El Rey and another Mexican Market off Orchard, name escapes me right now. Also, the overall vibe of the place is very uncomfortable.

Yelp
I discovered this hole on the wall Mexican Restraunt and butcher shop about 5 years ago. This place maybe the best kept secret in Boise. But how much of a secret can you be when the place is always packed? I have tried almost everything on the menu and I have never been disappointed. But what keeps me coming back CONSTANTLY for five years is the best bowl of menudo I have ever had in my life. A clear running broth packed with flavor and tripe that is perfectly cleaned and prepared every time. And let's not forget to mention the amazing staff. Great cooks, helpful butchers. And attentive servers. Always smiling always with great attitudes. Just some of the nicest and most wonderful people you could ever hope to meet. The great experience is only Matched by the exceptional authentic Mexican/ Tex Mex food. I challenge anyone to find a bad thing in the menu. This small quaint family owned Mexican restaurant deserves every bit of love it gets and if I'm being honest, it deserves even more. Note: If your looking for pure 100% Mexican food you will find some staples here. But keep in mind that the family that owns the restraunt is from Oakland (I believe) The Mexican American influence will also be found on the menu along side authentic Mexican street food.

Mike F.

Yelp
Extremely skimpy on meat portions. Order a carne asada burrito and you will get less than an ounce of crumbles of meat and piles of rice and beans.

Whitney P.

Yelp
As a native of Boise, I have been to every Mexican restaurant in the area. Mexican food is my number one fave cuisine and aside from a few "trucks" this is the only Mexican food for me.
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
This place is top-notch. The carne asada is without a doubt top-shelf. The salsa is delicious, and the pan dulce is really good. If you want truly tasty authentic Mexican food, this place is at the top of the list.
google avatar

Nathan S.

Yelp
Ok guys, just a heads up, you gotta understand that this place is Janky! It's tucked back in a Hispanic strip mall. The floors are greasy. You walk in and are assaulted with the smells of a greasy butcher shop. Anyways, went here looking for authentic Mexican and maybe this is just a little TOO authentic for my tastes. Proceed with caution.
google avatar

Quenia G.

Yelp
This place was great! The food was decent, quite busy inside so that's always nice to see. Definitely authentic and affordable. There's a market area that you can also shop at, in case you're looking for staple Hispanic foods. Would this me my go-to? Probably not. But it's not a bad choice at all. Would definitely come again :)
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
OMG the food here is fantastic! I had the Carnita Tacos ( small street tacos). Homemade tortillas, awesome salsa bar and the beans had that great "smokey" flavor . This is not a dinner atmosphere at all! Either bring home or Lunch. No margaritas only beer kinda place. I found my hole in the wall Mexican!
google avatar

Danny D.

Yelp
I was looking for some Mexican food out here in Boise & found Carniceria Coalcoman. I was blown away, the food was so authentic. The food was so delicious that I forgot to take a picture of it. The staff was very friendly & welcomed my family & I as if we were there family. I went back twice while I was in the area. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
The only thing I dislike is that I can never decide what I want more. Is it the posole? The tamales? The tacos? I've lived in Boise for less than a year and have been here over a dozen times. Easily my favorite place in town. The tacos are as good as the ones I grew up eating in Alamos. The lengua and al pastor are the best. But don't stunt on the rest of the menu, the posole is amazing. Pro-tip ask for a small piece of chicharrones to crush up on top. The service is always super friendly too!
google avatar

Phillip O.

Yelp
If you are looking for ambiance, go elsewhere. If you are looking for great food at very reasonable prices come here. We have a large family - 4 kids still home. My wife, the kids and I ate for $40. The carnitas is great as is the shredded beef. I like tortas and the ones here are outstanding. The portions are quite generous.

Libby B.

Yelp
This is the real deal. Delicious Mexican food without the trip to Mexico. We ate there while passing through Boise on our way home to Oregon. Just wish they were closer to where we live.
google avatar

Brianna T.

Yelp
Ordered through door dash, the food was amazing! Exactly what we were looking for, true street food that reminds us of home! The food was seasoned perfectly and was delivered with immediacy. We will definitely be returning!

Yelp
This mexican market/restaurant is located in a strip mall that I have passed many times without noticing it. Although from the parking lot, this place many not seem super welcoming, push through your dismay because this place is worth it! Before ordering from the restaurant, I wanted to peruse the market located off to the side. The market has all the types of chiles youve ever dreamed of, and many of them are in bulk containers, so you can choose exactly how many to purchase. They have all the dry and canned goods you would normally find in a market. They also have meat counter with the butcher actively working behind the counter. This market does not have a produce section. The market does not have its own cashier, you pay for everything on the restaurant side. On to the restaurant... I tried a couple tacos (carnitas and carne asada), a pork tamale, and rice &beans. I thought the carnitas tacos were just as good as the ones we get from taco carts in Puerto Vallarta! I would take a peek at the meat inside, because i did find 1 or 2 chunks of fat, but thats easily removed. My husband is really weird about any fat in his meat, so he really enjoyed the carne asada tacos. Those had good flavor too, but my fav was the carnitas. The pork tamale was excellent, ask for extra red sauce. And lastly the rice and beans were super flavorful! Don't skip the rice and beans.

Yelp
Stopped in today, tried them for the 1st time. We opted for the Caldo de Res (Cocido) which is a long standing fav for us having lived for years in Tucson. The soup here was over priced for what they served, $6 for small and $10 for large more like a meat soup with a few veg and side of tortillas. Also - too much fat in the soup. Their tortillas were gordita style vs. a standard flour - not top notch. They do have a nice salsa bar and a good selection of drinks. Good Caldo de Res, comes with a small piece of meat with corn on the cob chunk, pieces of carrot, cabbage wedge, potato, squash and a scattering of garbanzo and green beans (typically you can also see pieces of onion and tomato floating around). This place needs some practice on the soup side .. Here is what it should look like .. https://www.onionringsandthings.com/caldo-de-res-mexican-beef-soup/

Yelp
Whole in the wall Mexican restaurant that deserves far better location than it has. If your not looking for it you will miss it but by some fortunate accident may stumble upon this diamond in the rough. What can I say BEST MENUDO EVER!!! This menudo has a broth that is the literal nectar of the Aztec gods. A Mexican butcher / Mexican Restraunt that literally does everything right. Try everything on the menu, then take home some carne Asada from the butcher block for cooking at home. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh, made to order food! Plus, a little market for treats, snacks, Mexican groceries and piñatas. The food is amazing. We had the carnitas tacos this time. They were delicious!
