Latin American-Focused Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week Launches in October | Eater Detroit

"I'm noting Carniceria Guadalajara, the Mexican food counter and butcher shop joining Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week (Oct 5–14); like the other participants, it will feature traditional, affordable Mexican offerings that are already on its menu throughout the week." - Brenna Houck

If ever came a once upon a lifetime to live off the fruits of our land. This little meat market bears the fruit that roots the long lost gardens of Guadalajara

Sandra L.

Google
Terrible place, everything too expensive, today I bought salsa and when I got home I was sorry and let alone the cashier's attention that didn't even pay attention to me for talking in her AirPods. I came back today to give a second chance to the place.Because a few months ago I had to witness how a lady who I imagine is the manager yelled at the employees of Carniceria in front of those we were buying I felt so sorry for them don't go to that place I would never recommend it.

Veronica M.

Google
This little store is beyond unreasonable with their prices. Unfortunately for them, their products aren't always the fresherst either. I made the mistake of going today to buy bread. The sweet bread section had no prices listed. Typically, even in today's economy, I pay $1.50 at most, per piece of bread at other stores, and you can taste the freshness. Here, I paid $3.49, 1.99, 2.69 and 2.29. I told the cashier as she rang up the purchase, "wow, prices are high", her reply, "everything is more expensive, and we can't keep prices low". Came home looking forward to having sweet bread, each piece I bought tastes old. Not fresh at all. I don't mind paying high, but the quality has to line up. Not returning here.

Google
My kids and I love the pan dulce here, but lately, their prices and service have gotten insane. $20 for less than a dozen pieces of pan dulce is crazy!! Don't even touch the avocados!! Those are $3!! Each

Laura O.

Google
Everything is to expensive !!! Compared with others markets as La bonita, El super even the Marketon

Joselyn G

Google
Went to buy sweet bread, first time buyer. Customer service was horrible, wasn’t acknowledged, cashier kept talking to another worker. Took a few bites of the bread before i seen a cockroach. I went back and the manager gave me my money back. Definitely wouldn’t come back.

Black G.

Google
First time here with a group of friends. It was really good Mexican food. The service was excellent and not a real wait time.

Thomas C.

Google
Been coming here for many years. Store smells a bit funky. Great variety of items

Patty R.

Yelp
I used come to this place a lot. I know the economy has gone up but, this is ridiculous how this place jacks up prices. The male cashier couldn't help rolling his she's when I asked a question. He thought I didn't see him Maybe should not work as a cashier so h3 doesn't get annoyed with being asked questions.

Yelp
Best marinated carne asada meat for grilling! You won't be disappointed. The service was very nice! Great little grocery store with a variety of options. Highly recommend!

Roman D.

Yelp
As soon as you walked in, there's a foul smell and the place was disorganized. Meats were overpriced compared to La Bonita or Mariana's. Not going to recommend.

Yelp

Yelp
Best guacamole, and I moved here from San Diego. I bought an avocado from the row of produce, turned the corner and said sure why not try theirs. We had all of a 1/8 cup left of 12oz between the two of us; literally 3 tablespoons. Counter staff was great with my white girl, no inflection accent. We were able to understand each other without that weird 'what' back and forth. Bought equal amounts of (with the least left over first) fajita chicken, pastor, beef taco meat. The bakery lady was so nice with me not knowing if I should get stuff out of the cooler myself or not. I felt no anger from her that she had to walk by me to get the plastic bag to get the slice milk bread from the tray. I didn't know what to do and she didn't make me feel bad. Also, that slice did not last between the two of us. Lots of what I like to call 'drive by' eating from my purchase today! Even the check out lady- i told her husband is cooking. I had a Michelada mix and she's like who's drinking? I'm like, do I need to grab another?? #saleswoman I will definitely be back. They had glass liters of soda, shelf stable products, a meal to-go counter, beer cooler, lots of fresh baked bread.

Iliana A.

Yelp
I always try to give my people the chance and give to a mom and Pop shop however the service here was horrible the food, even worse I really wanted to like this place but the workers have no customer service they even come off rude and like they don't want to be there. I bought a tamale and the lady said it was chicken when I got to my car was all dry and it was not a chicken I bought Champurrado and it was so cold I asked them to warm it and they looked at me crazy. our people won't thrive when we run businesses this way please do better
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
We LOVE this place! They have a great variety of super fresh made in house salsa. Their salsa verde is the best! The butcher counter offers a ton of great quality meats. Their carne asada is the best we've ever had. Chips, guacamole, ceviche, tres leches cake ....all the traditional delicious Mexican favs all under one roof. For your next BBQ party this is where you should go. Family owned and always friendly service.
google avatar

Jackie P.

Yelp
I came here hoping they'd have the Mexican Sol beer that I like, Mango and Chamoy. No luck. I didn't try the carneceria, so my review is based on the store. I did buy a pon dulce, which I did not care for. It did not taste fresh. The cashier was friendly, but I likely will not be a return shopper.
google avatar

Mira F.

Yelp
Do better! There is such clutter everywhere and not very clean. I go there for their bread. One time flies were in there, gross. Next visit the doors to the bread were being blocked, I asked if I could get some bread and they made it seem like they were doing me a favor. When it comes time to pay, you have to wait until they finish gossiping yelling across customers. Absolutely no professionalism. Unfortunately this is the only store of this kind on this side of town and to top it off is very overpriced.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
This is the second time I drove 15 minutes here for them to close an hour earlier than posted. Both times I've seen people inside with the doors locked. Change your hours if you are not going to follow them.

Ana C.

Yelp
Service is okay. I like champurrados, so during the winter I buy it often. My son bought me a champurrado yesterday, Saturday from this carnicería. I have to say this is the worst champurrado I have ever had! Sadly he bought me a large size which is over $8, worse spend money! He bought bolillos and they were not fresh at all!

Junior G.

Yelp
I made a purchase of $115.86 on 4/26/2024 and the lady that was there was in an awful mood. She ran the card twice and I only recently discovered this when I was checking my bank account today. She only handed me one receipt. I made the mistake of stopping by to pick up some carnitas and chicharrones along with snacks only to be robbed by this lady cashier at the store. Update, I tried to resolve it amicably and was asked to stop by with my bank statement only for the "accountant" to hide in her office and refuse to see us. The cashier said she was out to lunch for up to 3 hours. This was after making us wait about 45 minutes. Save yourselves the headache do not shop there. They take advantage of people assuming no one will notice or complain. If you must insist on shopping there, pay cash. Trying to resolve it with the store is the first step to filing a dispute with the bank.
google avatar

Page M.

Yelp
Very nice customer service welcomed me into the store with greetings! Let me pick out which breads eye wanted from the racks
google avatar

Gary F.

Yelp
We had a pork burrito and it was very good but expensive at $12.00. Service was good and girl was friendly the only other thing I did not car for was their was no menu available of any kind.
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
Came here for the take out. Menu is not there anymore from orevious yelp photos. Luckily i could order from the yelp photos, thank good ess for yelp or i would starve. Got 3 tacos and diced papaya for $1.50. Taxos are $2 each. Great food, lots of meat. Great onions on top. The salsa's for the tacos are both very spicy. Wandered around to check out other things. Great little market.

Anibal P.

Yelp
The prices at this butcher shop/supermarket are incredibly excessive/expensive. For example, plantains in many markets cost $.99/pound, here they cost $2.99, or 200% more. A sweet/pumpkin empanada costs $1.00, at this place $2.49. I bought several things here and returned them when the cashier gave me the price. Go to Cardenas or the super market where the prices, although expensive, are more decent than this butcher shop.

Jo C.

Yelp
Very bad service from the older cashier lady with blonde hair! No smile and zero interest in her job!
google avatar

Dee Y.

Yelp
Love this small Mexican grocery store when I can't go to La Bonita. They have everything you need to cook up just about any Mexican meal. If you don't want to cook, they also have homemade food ready to go. The prices are expensive but beats me driving 30 minutes to get to La Bonita. Don't forget the pan dulce

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Las Carnitas están bien buenas. El pan esta muy sabroso en especial el bolillo. la tienda está a 20 minutos de mi casa y preferimos venir aquí que a Cárdenas.

George M.

Yelp
They have tainted chiken there please be aware. I bought a few pounds for a family gathering. I cooked about half it tasted weird . I've been a loyal customer for years since 2016 . Will no longer shop there . Only 1 day in fridge and it started to smell. Poor management. Horrible service
google avatar

Laura J.

Yelp
Fresh meat, but mostly the reason I shop here is because they have the best avocados..

R G.

Yelp
Terrible attitude at the register. Young lady didn't care that they had the wrong price. The corn clearly showed a price of 1.99 and the lady at the register over charged me 2.79 each. She walked away with an attitude pretty much telling me with body language that she didn't care about her job nor my service.
google avatar

Leanna A.

Yelp
My husband was eating there pozole and there was a damn piece of gauze in the damn cup nasty af never buying ishh here again!!!
google avatar

Sheyla H.

Yelp
Great spot, but they usually close by 8:30. They need to change their times. Their bread is really good and so is their food.

Trae Y.

Yelp
I bought 5 pounds of meat for a party. I got the Carne Ranchera already marinated to make Tacos. Once I barbecue the meat, man it was Salty ASF!!! Never tasted horrible meat before. It was embarrassing for my guest. NEVER ever going here again. I also saw cockroaches on the floor.
google avatar

Yuri C.

Yelp
Was in town for a few days and decided to give the carnitas and Chicharrones. Well let me tell you it was worth it. They were absolutely delicious and fresh. I am picky with carnitas and these right here again did not disappoint.
google avatar

Margie M.

Yelp
I love everything about this store. It has a great meat selection and good vegetables. And the best fresh chicirones.
google avatar

Estefhany L.

Yelp
We've tried the food several times. Once the rice was expired and rotten. The food servers are also a little rude. However, we always get nice service from the lady with tattoos in the food area. We don't recommend the food at all. Maybe if you are in a hurry and you need Hispanic spices and you can't make it to La bonita, this can be an okay option.

Suvannee V.

Yelp
this is the worst place, my dad found hairs inside of the bread. NEVER again shopping here !
google avatar

Jannie L.

Yelp
This store is pricey but you get what you pay for. Chicharrón is on point, prepared marinated asada is to die for! Avocados & tomatoes made an amazing guacamole. Meat is fresh, flavorful and extremely delicious when made! My grandparents loved our lunch :) Not sure about rude staff they all looked happy to me..

Manny M.

Yelp
This is the most dishonest price gouging place. I've caught them twice charging me for stuff I did not buy, and today is sent my daughter to buy eggs. They charged her $16 for twenty small eggs. I could've bought 24 large eggs for around $6 @ Sams Club. I will never buy again at tíos place!!
google avatar

annie g.

Yelp
I come here for asada preparada. They're usually nice and helpful. Every once in a while some of the staff aren't as friendly as they could be. The meat is somewhat pricey but I haven't found another place that I think marinates the meat as well. This could be a one stop shop for getting other groceries, be prepared to pay higher prices for the veggies, but this is a small business and we support when we can.
google avatar

Liz F.

Yelp
Great little market. We went specifically for the reviews of the carne asada marinade (make sure área Hera meat) and it was very good. Everyone T the bbq loved how soft and tender and tasty it was. They have everything else you need for the party, cebollitas, tortillas, produce. The mild tomatillo salsa was okay, didn't have just taste. Will come back.

Juan P.

Yelp
mi salsa de los burritos echada a perder muy mal servicio. y la Sra. agustina. muy grosera
google avatar

John O.

Yelp
They don't have huraches so dont ask. They do have some birria de chivo. (Goat soup). Small store, neat, clean, and has a little bit of everything. Lots of good bread. I personally liked the cuernos with cheese in them.I got there at 10:30 and the bread was just coming out.

Darin D.

Yelp
Great store. Love shopping there. Stop in and grab a pastry or some meat. Everything is fresh
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Place was great clean people where nice at the register and when I went to order a burrito and tacos in the back she was helpful I don't speak Spanish well. The tacos where super good and she gave a lot of meat the burrito was okay wasn't crazy about the rice though.
google avatar

DJ R.

Yelp
Convenient and clean. Friendly staff and great values. The meat selection is a little limited but oh my is the carne asada and seasoned chicken to die for. Some of the best I've had in town. Though a little on the high end of the per lb. price than I'm used to. It was definitely worth it when we tried it. Even though one of their registers were closed they did a great job at getting everyone out as quick as they could. They do have a very large variety of baked items. I am not a big fan but as someone who frequents carnicerias to try different carne asadas, I can say their bakery selection is pretty vast. I am also a huge ceviche fan but didn't try theirs. Perhaps I'll write an update next time I go.

Yelp
The customer service here gets worse and worse every time. There has been several occasions where the employees here disappoint me & I still keep going back. Once, the cashier didn't hand my mom the receipt in her hand, instead she just threw it. It hasn't been just my mom, they've done this a couple times to different people in line! When you don't give someone something IN THEIR HAND, it's not just bad customer service, it's lacking basic respect. Honestly, all the female workers here are terrible. Pretty sure they got the job after fitting the "Must have a shit face and a shit attitude" requirement on the job application. The only decent worker here is a young male and a big guy, but they're rarely ever there. The women talk down on you, they're so rude, they act like they're more than you. My mom went today with my kid, and he wanted one of those cheap toys they sell by the register. It was $1.40. My mom didn't wanna pay with a $5 bill, so she pulled out a dollar and some change. She was short ONE cent. They didn't want to give her the toy over ONE fucking penny. We ended up paying with the $5 bill BUT you lose more when you lose a loyal customer and all the money they give you than when you lose a cent. You aren't gonna get a raise or get promoted to manager. All you're gonna get is being jobless after losing all the customers, their money & business, for being total bitches! Screw you all and your small business. I guess sometimes you shouldn't support small businesses because it turns around and slaps you in the face. Take that 1 cent and shove it up your ass.
google avatar

M U.

Yelp
I love this place it has the best Pan Mexicano in town!!! It's small the customer service is horrible but that doesn't matter when it has THE best Pan and the carne is so good. It doesn't smell like a meat market it's clean and the food is good nice little place. We love this place and the prices for the meat and the pan are pretty good because the quality is awesome!!

Emanuel A.

Yelp
el servicio pesimo de una cajera ayer 9 de abril por la tarde muy mal nunca volveré a ir ni recomiendo ese lugar
google avatar

Billy M.

Yelp
Good meats. Their Bolillos are good specially if you get them when they are fresh. Their merinate on the ranchera is good.

Mari L.

Yelp
Nice little store . Fresh Mexican bread. N the carnitas are to die for. Love it. Mexican spices the big name stores do not carry .
google avatar

Sonia C.

Yelp
The store is small, but worth a look! We got there just as they were putting out the fresh bread. It was kind of confusing as to where to pay, as there were two cash registers and the employee didn't look up or greet me. Everything in the store was organized. I will be back to try the meat. Parking is kind of tight.
google avatar

Mario B.

Yelp
I wasn't thoroughly impress with the meat prices but was the closes one. The bread are decently priced. The two young ladies could have been a little bit more attentive to the customer, instead they were chatting away across from each other. I would go there if I absolutely have to but I would go out of my way for better meat prices somewhere else. Fix the customer service and the I'm too good attitude, especially if you're a cashier at a small market store!
google avatar

Mira V.

Yelp
Small but a great bakery case, wide variety of carne asada, marinated chicken and chorizo at the meat section. After being disappointed with Smiths I'll happily supplement my grocery shopping here. They have a core produce section with apples, onions, limes and zucchinis. Prices are competitive and the cashiers are really nice. The cooked meats and ceviche at the back of the store look delicious. Good selection of beers and a few wines. Store is clean and well kept. Lots of Goya products if you're looking for 4 different varieties of Adobe seasoning.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
33 cent rolls and good meat at the butcher. Good enough for even 2 or 3 meals for 5 dollars altogether
google avatar

Patricia H.

Yelp
I love this place they have all the Hispanic items you need. Is so close to my home in a good area. love the fresh pan dulce.
google avatar

Danielle F.

Yelp
This place has my business forever. I finally found a place that sells everything I like to eat in one place. I will be back!!!!
