Yelp
Located in what I read as the 'piñata district' of downtown Los Angeles, the spot specializes in Michoacán-style carnitas (or pork confit). This stand feels family owned and operated with some very friendly folks.
I came in the middle of the day recently, and it was sweltering hot in the area. They have a seating area right behind the stand that is shaded and has lots of fans blowing. It was actually quite comfortable in the eating area.
I ordered two carnitas tacos which come on some pillowy soft handmade fresh corn tortillas. The carnitas itself has a nice crispy texture and was so very flavorful. I also ordered a cucumber agua frescas, which was so refreshing in the sweltering downtown summer heat and a good pairing with the spicy salsa. The toppings and salsas as well as fresh limes, are all located in the seating area, so you can top your tacos at your leisure.
I'm a huge fan of spots like this. The place itself and the person behind it - Guadalupe Baez - is such a great underdog story filled with lots of trials, tribulations, and resilience.
Street parking was pretty easy to find in the area, but I can see how the weekends might get a little packed.
