Where to Shop for Specialty Groceries in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This family-owned and operated market with locations in Chula Vista and National City is famous for their food court but reserve time to explore the aisles. Fresh bolillo rolls, jars of molé and queso fresco are regularly featured specials in the weekly circular posted online." - darlene-horn

This Carnival Supermarket is hidden in a neighborhood. The people working here are very nice and helpful. This is worth the drive for buying meat like Carney asada and El pastor. Great selection for vegetables, limes tomato's and home made tortillas!

Jennifer Talasazan

Google
Fantastic lunches, deli, and selections.two cashier's only,no self checkout, wait at deli. Chicken was not bad. Had a restroom though.

Shannon Wong

Google
I come here regularly for salsa and tortillas that are both made in house. Always good and fresh. Love the variety of salsas. Meat is a must here too.

Rod Gullo

Google
Great carnitas tacos, crispy chicharon con carne, and a wide selection of fresh made salsas! All of their prepared foods in the deli section look delicious. The food is made fresh using authentic recipes and the popular items sell out quickly. It is the best place to go for authentic Mexican prepared food at fair prices. Whenever we need food for a party or a potluck, this is our go to place. Update: Got a pound of chicharon con carne. It was excellent as usual! Carnival consistently cooks it perfectly, so it is crunchy and tender. Other markets don't cook it properly, so they sell it tough and gooey. 5 stars!

Deniz Turkmen

Google
Fresh tortillas, salsa bar for bulk purchasing fresh salsa, side dishes like rice, beans, and macaroni&cheese to go, vegetarian food, and other Mexican-heavy goods. Tiny Avocados were 74c each but they were good. We even found bulgur which can only be found in middle-eastern markets. When we visited, the aisles were nicely organized and clean, which was unexpected because from the outside it looks like the building is about to get demolished. I don't think I would come here for our weekly grocery shopping, but for tortillas or other Mexican goodies - yes!

Andrew Marshall

Google
Bakery items and bulk Mexican food are priced better than anywhere else. That said their prices on pre-packaged food and brand name food are often surprisingly high. $1-2 more than Target. While it's an essential part of a restock shopping trip I rarely buy everything here. Very friendly service and the line always moves fast.

Google
The food is great. Especially in-house. I do feel like everyone is staring at me because I'm white though. Makes shopping extremely uncomfortable.

Google
Carnival Market is the best place to buy fruits and vegetables. The prices are lower than those at other stores, and the fruit is both delicious and of high quality. I also saw a wide variety of produce there. I highly recommend this place if you want to buy vegetables.

Yelp
Best tortillas in town! It's a small place but has a variety of items to choose from! Tortillas are made daily and cinnamon rolls too! Florear service and plenty of parking available.

Yelp
My favorite tortillas to get at a store! Freshly made everyday! The rice is great too! Lots of parking

Yelp
Wow, talk about going downhill... I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, it's not what it used to be. I used to be a fan of Carnival, but the overall quality and freshness seems to have severely diminished; I'm talking meat that looked inedible, spoiled looking veggies, and flies everywhere. A slew of tortillas were strewn about, looking sad and lonely, and I could taste the despair in the ones I brought home. No bueno. Oh, and on the items I was purchasing, Carnival's prices are higher than other similar markets- $4.99 for tortillas here, as opposed to $3.99 at my comparison shop-also bollios are $2.39 for 6 small, as opposed to $2 for 6 large-Smoked pork chops, uncannily resembleing pork jerky, are $5.99lb as opposed to $4.79lb...You get the point. Perhaps there were some issues with the previous and traditional, walk straight to the checkout line system, as now they use a one line "call you to the register" format. It wasn't clear to me, but after a moment or two, you figure it out. I wasn't the only one wondering what was going on, as another customer, who was also bewildered, asked me if she was supposed to get in the line adjacent to the registers. The cashier that helped me was nice and efficient. I really hope Carnival gets back to the store I know they can be. Thank you kindly for taking my feedback.

Yelp
We've been scouting out a Mexican supermarket closer to our home since Pancho Villa's closed down. We purchased 1lb. of Carnitas to try it out at home for dinner. We have never been so disappointed in a purchase. Out of 1lb. we placed at least 3/4 of a sandwich bag with gristle and fat from our order. What we were able to salvage was not tasty at all. I find it hard to believe Carnival Market would actually serve such a poor quality of prepared carnitas. While there I was shopping for a can of Menudo for myself. a 25oz. can of Juanitas was $7.43. You can find a 3 pack of the same Menudo at Sam's Club for $10.98. We purchased both flour and corn tortillas to try out in preparation for an event in our neighborhood. The flour tortillas did not come up to par with the tortillas we used to get at Pancho Villas. The corn tortillas were good. I like that they had Blue Corn tortillas available for purchase. Guacamole was good as well as the Pico de Gallo. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Yelp
I was hungry for Carnitas in the area and asked a friend for a recommendation. Without hesitation he suggested Carnival. The woman that took my order was friendly and attentive. I ordered carnitas beans and rice and corn tortillas all were very good. At $13.99 it was more than what I want to pay for an everyday dinner . But that's Purdy much par for the course these days. I'll count it as my splurge meal of the week.

Yelp
I am the customer of this market for about 10 years now.Went today to buy pork chops and when came back home realized that they smelled bad.Feq more people in my house said the same.Went back to adress the issue and manager Roni wasn't willing to help.He said even meat is bad you still need a receipt.i think food and housing division should inspect this place.Foodborn diseases spreading like this. Avoid meat at this market.

Yelp
A wonderful establishment. Won't say anything about their sales but they got some great ones. My girls love coming here with me.

M J.

Yelp
If you are black, be prepared for the cashiers to ask you if you have food stamps. I waited to see if they asked another customer behind me and she didn't. This happened to me twice, and I only go to this place once a year. They need to get better customer service training. Never shopping here again.

Yelp
This market is good for certain staples like tortillas, hot food bar, salsas/guacamole, and yummy desserts. Their produce can be hit or miss in terms of freshness, but relatively affordable. Can't forget their baked goods either (bolillos, pan dulces). If you're looking for a full grocery trip/pantry items it can be expensive. I would go to Food 4 Less or Vons for condiments, frozen foods etc. I usually go here just for a couple ingredients. The line is a little confusing- you have to get in a separate line before the registers and get called by cashier number (even when no one is in line). Ambiance - small local grocery store. Sometimes they do have great deals in their weekly flyer.

Yelp
Friendly environment to shop for groceries. Staff was helpful. Recommend this supermarket.

Yelp
Día de los Reyes Day is celebrated on January 6th.  Each person cuts into the rosco and the lucky one gets the part with the plastic figurine of baby Jesus.   I visited Carnival Market to get some Rosco de Reyes.  King bread starts with a bread base like Day of the Dead bread.  Nice and moist with a mild flavor.  Loved the sugary glaze on top with added some sweetness and the dried fruit which added a fruity sweetness.  I love this bread and look forward to getting it again next year. I also tried some other items. Concha was soft and mild flavored.  Sugar glaze on top gave this treat a delicious sweet flavor.   Fresh tortillas were still warm when I brought them home and tried them.  Soft and had a delicious mild flavor. Fried fish was a battered white fish.  I liked the mild flavor and the crispy batter.  Excellent value. Bbq ribs were fall off the bone tender.  Tasted like they were baked.  Very mild flavor without the sauce.  I liked the sauce which had a sweet bbq flavor. Rotisserie chicken was fall off the bone tender. Nice flavor.  Comparable to other supermarket rotisserie chickens.  So far Costco is my favorite as the freshness and flavor is the best I've had from a market. Fried drumsticks had a crunchy skin and tender juicy chicken.  I liked the mild fried flavor.  Excellent value. The meats were on par with meats from other Mexican markets I've tried.  The tortillas tasted much better than the pre packaged tortillas you see in major grocery store chains.

Yelp
Their selection of Latin American and Asian products is impressive, and the prices are unbeatable. Friendly staff and a clean, organized store make shopping a breeze.

I would like to give Rosa a big thank you for your amazing and delicious cakes that you've made for me over the last few years. The pink cake was made in our first pandemic year! Cake charms sold separately Esty and Amazon. Gracias Rosa.

Yelp
If you want fresh vegetables & Fruits, Then this market is where you want to shop. Also the staff and owner Auday are very welcoming. Ronnie helped us yesterday and very nice . They have fresh tortillas and a delicious deli section, we love the fresh salsas. And a meat department. If you have a chance you need to stop on by:) I give this Market 5

Donald P.

Yelp
The store is clean and they carry the really good flour tortillas. Friendly employees.

Plenty of options and variety of things, love that they have a lunch section to sit and eat. And tortillas freshly made .

Yelp
I have been shopping here for years, mainly ordering their catering platters for parties and get-togethers. We again enjoyed their delicious catered foods recently. They again did not fail us. Delish!

Yelp
I recently was introduced to Carnival Supermarket by a friend. I love this store. I have been back three times since my initial visit. They have a great selection of food at the hot bar. The produce is amazing, fresh and well stocked. The tortillas are made in the store. The layout of the store makes it easy to shop. There are plenty of employees available to assist you in the various departments. Except for early in the morning they always have multiple cashiers working so checking out is a breeze. The parking lot is very large with plenty of handicap as well as regular parking available.

Tony T.

Yelp
The quality of the product are average but the prices are excellent I would go here on once a week visit for specific items and food It is also an experience into Central American culture Enjoyed

Yelp
Love to go to Carnival for some fresh made tortillas! We always get 2 bags! We also got fresh salsa, carnitas, guacamole, rice, and fried pork skin. It is a good, yummy dinner! Very reasonable price!

Yelp
Yall if you haven't gone to get hot food from here go get you some bc it's bommbbb. They have taco Tuesdays but the tacos are decently priced normally too, it's 10.99 I think for two tacos with rice and beans and they have a deal that if you get $10 in hot food you get a free aguas frescas . My fav is the cabeza taco. It's so juicy and the tortillas served w the tacos are so soft and tasty, I hate me a dry stiff tortilla . I will say the tamales were not that great tbh it was kinda dry and had too much masa:/ I think I'll keep getting my tamales from that random tamale man behind 7/11 in east sd but the tacos neverrr miss

Yelp
Love this place. This has the best burritos EVER. Tacos taste like authentic street food also. I also love the fresh orange juice and other fruit juices they make fresh.
google avatar

Shamene M.

Yelp
Who knew you could get an amazing breakfast burrito at carnivalsupermarket? So good! You can add anything inside you want. I got eggs, bacon, cheese, potatoes, beans, salsa and sour cream. Nice to be able to get a burrito while shopping. The ladies that are cooking really know how to make good authentic Mexican food. The service is, they do take a while to cook your order. Also make sure you keep checking with them to make sure they are getting your order right. Sometimes they don't even work on your order for like 10 minutes and I will check with them and they are like ok and then start on my order. Sometimes it's hard to order if you don't speak Spanish. Everything in the store is at least 2-3 dollars more expensive then other grocery stores, but they do have Mexican cooking items that they don't carry other places. I love the fresh bakery items, the fresh tortillas and the tres Lethe cake slices
google avatar

Erik C.

Yelp
I'm definitely a bargain shopper and find myself here at least once a week. I find that the quality of all of the things that they make are exceptional and it's my favorite way to do taco Tuesday. Keep your eyes peeled for those weekly ads, amazing deals all the time. They also tolerate me and my broken Spanish, and meet me with a lot of kindness

Yelp
Unbelievable I can't believe this was around the corner for 20 years I am a huge fan of the food is amazing

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. What a DELIGHTFUL local neighborhood Mexican grocery store. This place is seriously incredible. Whatever you could need, want, or dream of they carry. It all began when we begin cooking Mexican cuisine during the pandemic and a desire for fresh tomatillos. Little did we know of what we were about to experience. Fresh tortillas, chips, salsas, ceviches, baked goods, tacos, meat, seafood, veggies all at amazing prices and insane quality + freshness The employees have been extraordinarily helpful and friendly. Parking and checkout are always a breeze. They've also been mindful in terms of social distancing and hygiene. Grateful for this business during the pandemic. Extremely recommended.

Yelp
One of the closest Mexican supermarket from my house! I recently made a trip to buy some micheladas stuff because I wanted to make tamarindo michelada! My bf and I were pretty clueless on the tamarindo part so we asked one of the staff and they were able to help us out! They were very kind and heloful. The store itself is full meat, produces, and anything else you may need. They also serve hot foods such as tacos and have a wide variety of already made ceviche! Make sure you wear your masks because no masks= no entry! Everything here is fairly priced and if not probably cheaper than the American stores!

Erica S.

Yelp
Unfortunately both my dad and I have gotten really bad food poisoning from here from the chicken. Which is a bummer because as much as we liked this place we will not be going back. Ps we even got sick at different times. It was for sure from this cooked chicken they sell. Tasted old. Shouldn't have ate it.

Yelp
Amazing Mexican food, produce and drink. Wide chooses of fresh produce. Ready to eat meals and dessert are available. Service is average, typical grocery store. Overall an amazing grocery store with a great Mexican vibe.

James B.

Yelp
Too busy. Employees rude. Maybe it was just a bad day. It seems like a popular market for Latinos. Prices were competitive.

Nadgv N.

Yelp
The owner send me a massage apology for my inconvenience but had not done nothing about it my review stay the same they have horrible service and food it's not good lack off taste i hate when they ask you what type off payment you using like so racist it's like they asking you if you have money to pay before you go to a store and it's because if you pay with any government help that mostly all people use they give you this cheap bag and force things to fit in it ....
google avatar

Tina T.

Yelp
My first time shopping here! I came specifically for the 3lbs for $1.00 tomatillos. My husband waited in the car and told me go in, get the tomatillos, pay and get out! His logic is Good since he knows I love to shop for groceries. Love the fresh tortillas and the sales they have every week!!! Just wish they would get rid of MERCATO their delivery service. They will rip you off any way possible!

Worst D.

Yelp
Service has been okay as of late. I haven't had another issue the past couple of times

They also put the altar for the day of the dead keep up with the Mexican traditions .. and also I see they had holiday meal I can't wait to order my holiday dinner .. extraordinary customer service from everyone thanks to know how to treat your customers

Yelp
I frequent the National city location more often, this location is closer to my job. Definitely smaller in size and less crowded. They make fresh hot flour and corn tortillas here, which we love. The fresh hot flour tortillas are amazing and a must have. A dozen is $2.49. The chicken dinner ( whole chicken, pint of rice & beans, 10 corn tortillas and salsa) is an extraordinary buy. Customer service is mediocre. Cashier wasn't very friendly. Parking is average.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a wonderful grocery store, the meat shop is top notch, the tortilleria is fantastic and you can get fresh flour and corn tortillas all day, the produce is absolutely top notch, and the hot food bar has some of the most amazing treats around. 10/10, you would be remiss if you didn't grab a container of hot beans and some fresh tortillas for a delicious road snack as you leave.
google avatar

Kat K.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing! I've tried the location in National City and definitely prefer this one! They serve hot, fresh food here, and there are so many options to sate the palate for any craving. They also have an area with tables and seats for those wanting to sit and eat. I'm when I worked in the area, I used to go in Tuesdays for their taco specials. I miss being able to go here at least once a week. Every now and again I will drive down to purchase fresh meat, produce, tortillas, and salsa.

Yelp
I have a birthday party to go to so I stopped in to get some hand packed containers of guacamole, shrimp ceviche , and shrimp cocktail. I asked for 2 pounds of each large one and the lady behind the glass counter was quick and she pointed out here favorites. I will bring these to the party for everyone to try with their fried corn tortilla chips. For me I bought a medium refried beans, small fresh salsa, carnitas & pork skin sortida (not sure I spelled that correctly) and warm freshly made in house package of their small sized corn tortillas. Beans were amazing! I will be back for the beans, fresh salsa, shrimp cocktail and their flour and corn tortillas. I bought cilantro and onion from the produce section and I made the best burrito last night. You can see the price per pound on each label in the photos. I also found the Sazon seasoning I have heard such good things about when I want to make my own pork roast in the crockpot. (I bought a pork shoulder roast there for $1.99 a pound) . They have a nice produce section/selection and a nice variety of meats and cheeses in the butcher section. Some you can get already marinated. I was quite pleased to see how busy this store was on a Friday night. They are turning the inventory pretty good with this kind of hustle and bustle. They have a bakery section too. Not everything is great pricing. Watch the labels.... I saw 93% hamburger meat for $11.99 a pound. Ummm no thanks at that price point. I love salted the brand Challenge butter but they have it here for sale for $8.99 a pound for 4 sticks. I had been buying that at Winco for $3.49 lately so no thanks. I did see eggs for $7.99 a dozen which seems to be the case everywhere lately. I didn't love the shrimp ceviche but it was good but not great. This is why I only it gave it 4 stars. Plenty of parking and it is well lit for evening shopping. The guac is fire! Chips visually look a little dark in color for my taste but they have a great flavor and I would buy again. They are a little bit on the thick side. I prefer mine a little bit thinner. I can't wait to bring these containers to the birthday party and see if others like it as well as I do. I will certainly be back.

Ana F.

Yelp
The worst customer service I paid an item and they didn't put in the bag and when I go back to the store the supervisor didn't care not even apologized I never gonna come back to this market place
google avatar

Raymond A.

Yelp
Great market down the street, they have all items you're looking for and a pretty big hot food bar. They make the tortillas in store so if you're looking for some tasty authentic Mexican foods, this is a good place to stop by and check it out. They are also not bz bz so its good for a quick in n out.

Yelp
Your Jumex pinapple juice was expired. We noticed it once we came back home and we were about to drink it. We are kinda pissed.
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
Great selection of hot food items. Friendly workers behind the meat counters. To me, I like this store better than Pancho Villas in North Park. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

W A.

Yelp
The store itself is good. The young female cashier working in afternoon, middle lane.. was unwelcoming, unfriendly, and just rude for no reason. I couldn't understand why. We were simply checking out a small order. I would've back here if it wasn't for that. Lots of other places with friendly customer service to shop at.

Yelp
Yannet y Mayrani went super helpful at tthe taqueria Sushi was so good! Super recommended

Yelp
I live in Los Angeles and when I come down to Chula Vista to visit in laws, Carnival Supermarket is one of the place I stop to grab quick food for the kids and family. We also grab your fresh flour and corn tortillas and sometimes do some quick shopping. Love this place!!! The old man in the pizzeria is always happy and funny, spreading his positive vibes to all around him. Everybody in the store are friendly and welcoming. I wish you guys would expand to Los Angeles area I the SGV area.

Yelp
Everything from tacos to sushi to gyros! My family is addicted to birria tacos - really anything birria! So I've been trying to perfect my recipe! Places like this always help. Friendly staff and amazing products as well as prices and selection.

Yelp
Amazing deli with the most delicious fresh dishes... The menudo is my new favorite! Wednesday is chile relleno day. I never go wrong with a small family dinner selection :)

Yelp
Great prices and all of the authentic ingredients you could possibly want to cook an authentic meal!
