15 Quirky Places to Visit on Your Next Colorado Family Road Trip

"The Carousel of Happiness started simply enough: with an empty frame for an antique carousel, and an idea to repopulate it with something beautiful. Nederland, Colorado native Scott Harrison once distracted himself from the ravages of the Vietnam War with a music box. The tinkling sounds of Chopin’s “Tristesse” conjured images of his mountain home and a carousel, calming him amidst firefights and the hellscape of combat while serving as a U.S. Marine. Upon his return home, this peaceful scene inspired by his music box was one Harrison couldn’t shake. Over a decade later, in 1986, when the opportunity to purchase the skeleton of a Looff carousel – which itself had survived fires and wind storms – presented itself, Harrison leaped at the chance. Despite having never carved a single thing in his life, Harrison would spend the next quarter-century learning to carve wood into the shapes of animals, fantastic figures, and more propelled by little more than a vision of populating that bare carousel with something capable of producing nothing but pure joy.  As he told a local news channel, “I didn’t want it to be a goofy kind of carnival ride. I wanted it to be something meaningful for others like it’s been for me.” Officially opened to the public in 2010, Harrison’s “Carousel of Happiness” harnesses the spirit of the century-old carousel by pairing his new carvings with original art, including “The Michelangelo of the Midway,” plus a 1970s mural of endangered species. 35 brightly colored, ridable creatures bob up and down on the once bare frame of the former Saltair carousel, surrounded by a crew of 25 smaller animals Harrison created to keep the bigger ones company. For an added touch of magic, as the wheel spins round, tiny fairies flit overhead, hiding in the nooks and crannies of the carousel’s eaves.  Positioned in the small mountain town’s only shopping center, Nederland’s own residents raised the necessary funds to build a permanent structure around Harrison’s Carousel of Happiness in advance of its public debut in 2010. With an admission price of just $1, plus wheelchair ramps and bench seating on the ride itself, Harrison’s mission of spreading warmth and joy remains accessible to all for generations to come." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A Vietnam veteran’s 26-year carving project brought a 1910 Looff carousel back to life; today it spins to a 1913 Wurlitzer. Featured regularly by local news and arts outlets, this nonprofit operates daily in summer and hosts community events.

The story behind this beautiful piece of craftsmanship is touching. A Vietnam Vet built the piece for people to enjoy just so his mind would be at peace from the rigorous of combat. A must-see experience.

Google
Such a cute stop! The hand carved animals are really beautiful and there is a lot of info on the history of the carousel. $3/ride and kids under 1 are free. We rode twice and my 6mo old had a blast.

Moira Barrantes

Google
This carousel is a must see. All the animals are hand carved, and the carousel itself a refurbished antique.

Google
I just happen to love carousels .. so, maybe a tiny bit of bias here. The Carousel of Happiness lives up to all my expectations ... from the wonderfully hand carved animals ... both jumpers and standers ... to the great old tinney and thumping musical instruments. Nostalgia for adults and delightful new adventure for kids. Its salute to Veterans makes me incredibly proud.

Google
We did our engagement photos here. It was so whimsical and fun, there’s so many interesting things there to discover. It was a lovely experience and the staff was incredibly kind and hospitable. This is one of my favorite places!

So so fun!! A must is you're in the area!! Highly recommend!! This is an original carousel that was brought down from Salt Lake City.

Barry Van Engelen

Google
Just watched the story of this Vietnam Marine who carved the animals and rebuilt the carousel and got his mind and soul back that was taken from him while serving in Vietnam. What a great story. I'll be sharing this guy's story with our Veteran members at VFW POST 7310, GROSSE ILE MICHIGAN.

Go here! Just do it. The art work is beautiful.

Yelp
This carousel is just so magical every time we visit. We keep noticing new little details that make it feel even more special.

Yelp
This organization's Service Dog policy is noncompliant with current ADA Federal and Colorado Law. And they have been reported for an incident that occurred on 7/14/2025. They give separate water fountain vibes in 2025 if you are disabled and have a device dog. Yelp
Really loved visiting this hidden gem! We are visiting family in the area and I'm a big theme park aficionado so my sister-in-law recommended checking it out. So glad we did! It's a 1917 Looff and really quite darling. The volunteers working there were knowledgeable about the history of the carousel and friendly too. We rode for $3/person. Had to get on the zebra. So many unique and cool carved animals! There's a cute little gift shop where you can get a fun souvenir and support the carousel upkeep. Little things like pins, patches, stickers, t-shirts. Bathrooms were clean and well-kept. Upstairs there is an overlook to watch when the carousel runs, as well as a cute puppet theatre with a full chest of plushies to choose from, and many kid's books.

Yelp
No way this place can't get five stars. The Carousel is a magical delight for all ages. Beautifully hand carved pieces to ride. All made by a Viet Nam Vet. Anytime I am in Nederland, I have to stop and ridge the Carousel of Happiness. It delivers what is promises!

Yelp
Had heard about this carousel from a friend and happened to be close by. He surprised me with a trip to Nederland and I asked if I could ride the carousel. He said yes. The front area is not large and crammed with merchandise and a photo opp seat. Place to hang your coats and a children's area above. I didn't see it but the kids ran up and down. I purchased my ticket and we went into the carousel area. Lots of memorabilia and tributes. The plans for the carousel were displayed. The carousel is magic. Lovingly crafted and beautiful. The ride was amazing. I felt transformed into a child and into a magical world. I highly recommend this ride.
google avatar

Yelp
A must-stop along Peak to Peak highway. Worth every penny of $3 it costs to ride, and not just for kids! Wonderful backstory behind the renovation of the carousel and the carving of the animals--no spoilers here, but be prepared to be moved by the story. Let your inner child emerge, ride, and be happy!
google avatar

Kyana M.

Yelp
We took a mini road trip to Nederland, CO to ride on the Carousel Nederland is beautiful and the kids enjoyed the magical carousel ride. The scenic drive through the mountains to get there from Boulder was an experience in and of itself. It was a really sweet experience.

Yelp
What a weekend! After an interesting hike in nearby Rollinsville a pal and I stopped into Nederland to enjoy a cup of tea, walk around, check out the molting cockroaches at the "Wild Bear Nature Center", and of course check out the Carousel of Happiness. The outside of this building gives the impression that it is small. When you walk into this welcoming cavern of joy the room opens up to reveal walls of glass room surrounding a wondrous carousel. Tickets were just $2 (per ride). Passports were also available for the little ones. After purchasing our tickets at the main desk we were on our way to get in the queue. And for the record, there were at least 3 times as many adults riding as there were children. Racing around to find our top animal to ride I settled on a stately moose. We spun round and round to "Jeepers Creepers" (how appropriate considering the upcoming howl-iday) wafting out of the 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. My only complaint is that the ride wasn't quite long enough (this was my second carousel adventure of the year). Following the ride the exploring continued upstairs past the horse of 100 colors. There we found a lovely viewing area where we could watch the 100 year old gears churn and grind while the carousel did it's thing. We also discovered a puppet theater. How exciting! Before exiting the establishment we took in the trinkets and offerings. Photos of of the carousel, "happiness" socks, stuffed animals, baby onesies and more. I'll most definitely be back for another spin!

Yelp
Perfect outing to go hiking. This was a stop, per a recommendation from a local coworker. Daughter did not complain one bit. Adults, YOU CAN RIDE!!! It was so much fun! Took me back a few decades to my childhood.
google avatar

Tammie G.

Yelp
Really a neat stop when in Nederland. Lived the history behind the carousel and the staff is friendly. The ride is only 2.00 a person and a must do when here. It really does make you happy just seeing it and hearing the music and the ride of course!

Abigail W W.

Yelp
i Love a good carousel, my favorite animal to ride is the the panda! it has a very nice color scheme. Love the attention to detail, my 13month old loved watching me ride it
google avatar

Yelp
Nederland is an oddly charming town, and while the 'downtown' area doesn't feel as neatly laid out as, say, and Estes Park, it still maintains a great number of small, local businesses. Couple that with the surrounding and scenic community, and you get a wonderful place for a day trip that is 30 minutes west and 4000 feet up from Denver. While shopping and eating is all well and good, no trip is complete without a ride on the Carousel of Happiness - an early 1900's era carousel, complete with a truly unbelievable automated horn/drum organ contraption that you have to see with your own eyes. Astonishing. The carousel itself has a story that I won't spoil, only to say that each one of the dozens of rideable critters was hand carved and painted by the veteran who took it upon himself to bring this vision to a reality.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
So much fun! I highly recommend. The carousel is a wonder of engineering and hard work

Yelp
The Best It was all beautiful The best carousel I ever rode Thank you for having this for all to enjoy

Yelp
Nothing short of magical. I dare you to go for a ride and not get an immediate happiness boost. I hesitated to go (because I am an adult that was passing through solo, haha) but I'm so glad that I did. An amazing story. The carousel was hand-carved by one man. As a Marine in Vietnam, Scott Harrison held a tiny music box to his ear that brought him the peaceful image of a carousel while horror raged all around him. Upon his return, he rescued an abandoned Utah carousel (the previous animals were sold to collectors) and ended up hand-carving 50 new animals (35 can be ridden). I loved how unique the animals were. I believe it was Scott's goal to represent animals not usually included (I rode a panda). There was also a wide variety of seating. There were small animals for smaller children. Animals with wider seats (like my panda which was very comfortable) for bigger butts. They even had straight up chairs (a bench next to a gorilla) for anyone who doesn't want to or isn't able to "mount" an animal. I absolutely loved that - it made this carousel so accessible to everyone. In addition to going around, some of the animals go up and down as well (they'll tell you how to differentiate). Also, the 1913 Wurlitzer organ that plays as you ride is awesome. Only $2 a ride. Not to be missed! A huge thank you to Scott Harrison. Thank you for your service to this country and for giving the world such a beautiful gift that will bring joy and love (no matter how brief) into so many people's lives.

Caitlin C.

Yelp
This was a highlight of my trip to the area. The carousel is fun and charming, but the back story and friendly and welcoming staff make it even better. If I lived here, I would be a regular.

Yelp
When we arrived in Boulder we journey'ed to Nederland where we talked to the locals and trie to figure out what we were going to do. Every single person we talked to said that we had to at least stop by and check out this attraction. Thank goodness we did because it was amazing to hear the history of this carousel and see all of the pictures hanging on the wall. It only cost $1 per person per ride. Each animal of the ride is hand carved and painted. An amazing feat of craftsmanship and skill. It even survived a fire in the early 1900's. Definitely a must see whether you are young or old. You will definitely not forget it.

Yelp
This is a very unique place to visit as the history within each piece of wood work really stands out. The operator was very friendly as he welcomed me and my family and genuinely seemed interested in knowing where we were from. Once I informed him that we were from Houston TX, he immediately showed his support and sympathy over the recent hurricane devastation that was forced upon us. That moment meant a lot and we appreciated it very much. The tickets are 1$ each and as you are getting on your animal of choice the operator is giving the history lesson over the loudspeakers. Good times.
google avatar

Katie P.

Yelp
Absolutely worth the trip from Boulder! This carousel and the story behind it are amazing. Try to chat with the staff... there's so much more to learn than is printed/displayed. Wow! There's plenty to see in Nederland to make a day/afternoon out of a visit.

Betsy N.

Yelp
Wonderful stop! Beautiful history and carving amazing. People so friendly. What a surprise!
google avatar

Bry M.

Yelp
Awesome attraction for the whole family in Ned! Super ornate hand carved full sized animals to ride with a classic Wurlitzer music machine. I could have watch that in itself all day but my favorite part was the distinctly different mirrors mounted to the top outer wall that you could see yourself or other riders depending on the angle. This place is an absolute must if not just for fun but for the incredible historical experience of how it came to be in the cool little town of Nederland.
google avatar

Aubreylin S.

Yelp
This carousel was recommended to me by a friend and I was very hesitant to make the nearly one and a half hour drive to Nederland. I'm so glad that I did though because the carousel was cooler than cool. Great for children and adults who have even the teensiest bit of kid left in them. Take time to chat with the kind people who work there. They will tell you all about the carousel's amazing history. It was truly a lovely experience.

John C.

Yelp
Perfect pit-stop after skiing with the kids. Mini donuts and hot cocoa next door. If you forget a ski boot or a kid melts down before you make it to lunch, you can still salvage the day with a trip around the carousel.
google avatar

Yelp
We have a half-day routine in Nederland based around our daughter's obsession with the Carousel of Happiness. The story of the carousel makes me tear up every time, and it's definitely the kind of therapeutic art project I'm thrilled to support and enjoy!!! The animals are gorgeous, made with whimsy and love. My daughter's favorites are the camel and zebra, and the baby likes the bear bench. We ride at least twice, a steal at $1 a ride. The classic tunes on the antique pipe organ are a real hoot too!!!
google avatar

Vivian A.

Yelp
You can't come here and not be impressed at the amazing story behind all the equally amazing art pieces that make up this unique carousel. It's a small building beside an equally smaller train cart located in a small strip mall parking lot. You walk in through an even smaller gift shop to purchase your carousel tickets and pick your ride amongst all the amazing hand carved animals. There are newspaper articles to read all over the walls and not an inch of space in which your eyes won't be delighted with seeing some amazing detail. Your inner kid will feel just as happy as the little girl twirling at the very top.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was such a pleasant surprise!! I wrote this down as a possible place to stop on the way to Estes Park, it was sort of just something I thought we might do if we had some time to kill. Well, we ended up stopping and not only is Nederland a lovely town, the carousel was amazing!!!! The history, the construction, the Wurlitzer pipe organ.......the whole thing was SO much fun. The people running the carousel were friendly, everything about it was worth the stop. Visit this carousel, even if you don't have kids! Such a great story about how it got where it is.

Yelp
The review that wrote itself... Short while back, Anthony M. kidded me, "are you going to write all your reviews from a Southwest window seat?" Even better! Spirit magazine has a write up this month about this magical spot in Ned. The article filled in some details for me, but here's the version I was told one brisk Spring baseball evening as my childhood friend drove the curvy mountain road from Ned to Boulder as we were en route to a game: The carousel that you just rode was a labor of love and healing. It was a man, a soldier, caught in Vietnam in war-time and he received a gift from his sister back in the States. It was a music box. He listened to it to escape the pain and hell that was present all around him. He let the music take him to a mountain meadow where he imagined happiness and peace. He kept the music box in his backpack, always close to his side. A different sound ended his experience though - mortar and shell blasts. Shrapnel stole the music box, wounded him and sent him to a painful recovery. He went through more hell, but finally home - to a country that shunned its vets. Lost in grief, this man took to his vision and began carving animals that he wanted in that musically bright meadow. Each one, a nod to Joy. Life size. Life affirming. Happy. Each and every one - loved and unbound - floating to the music box music. After 29 years of carving...he had all the animals, it was time to find them their mountain meadow home. That place: Nederland, CO. Still today: Carousel rides always one dollar. I feel blessed that I heard the carousel's story orally - sitting in the backseat of a Subaru - being buffeted by mountain air. The air entwined the scent of pine with the words, as we wound our way to a Rockies game. I had goose bumps and I do again right now. I'm flying from Salt Lake City...and just now read - on the shore of The Great Salt Lake was the carousel's first home. (The frame of it, you know, built in 1910.) There's other details in the Spirit mag, so I'll leave it to you to find out more. Don't be surprised if you go looking for it...and maybe a whale winks at you. This Memorial Day weekend, a "thank you" to all who serve and to Scott Harrison who not only went above and beyond, but whose dream of happiness still goes "around and around" today.

Yelp
Love this place! This carousel was actually somewhere else in the 1800s. It took them years to move it to Nederland. The floor of the carousel is amazing and original - so pretty! The most amazing thing about this carousel, in my opinion, is that it is entirely green. There's even a screen that you can look at that shows where the energy is coming from and how much energy is stored to run the carousel. Fantastic. Plus, there's a cute little gift shop attached.
google avatar

Joe Y.

Yelp
A Marine Vietnam vet artist painted all these animals by hand and the $1 ride ticket goes towards the non-profit organization that helps special needs kids. If your passing by Nederland, stop by and take a trip down to happiness lane!
google avatar

Dawn F.

Yelp
This was a neat stop on our trip to Nederland. The carousel is really cute and we had a fun time selecting which animals we were going to ride on. They only charge $1 per ride, so you can afford to go multiple times or take a larger group of kids. The gift shop had some cute and unusual things (used carousel themed coffee mugs from all over the country for $5 each) and they provide restrooms. It's right next to a cool coffee shop that is inside of two ancient railroad cars. They have mini donuts that are freshly fried up and an area with old timey candy. A perfect place to stop and enjoy time with the kids.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
What can I say? The Carousel of Happiness made us happy! Really neat, colorful figures to ride and a great old Wurlitzer organ - how cool. If this quaint ride doesn't make you happy, then you need a hug - I'd be happy to give you one!
google avatar

Valerie E.

Yelp
This lovely piece of history brought tears to my eyes. It's certainly is the Carousel of happiness. I loved the songs coming from the Wurlitzer Organ. Highly recommend you stop by when in Nederland.
google avatar

Melissa K.

Yelp
How can you not give 5 stars to a carousel in the middle of a cute little mountain town and it only costs $1. The hand painted fish along the bottom are super cute and the story is a little girl fell in love with the carousel and offered to paint them by hand before her family left town. The variety of animals are fun, animals from all over the world! I rode the peacock! While you ride, you can close your eyes and pretend you are a kid again, its worth every penny and more!
google avatar

Leanne G.

Yelp
We adore this carousel and go each time we come to Nederland. My daughter loves the animation of each of the animals. I love that its memorable for her, and also just $1 per ride. Its somewhat of a tradition after we are done skiing to head down to the carousel for a ride. It adds to the fun of the entire experience for her, which is the desired memory that I want her to have of the ski experience. Don't forget to go upstairs to play in the puppet theater when you are done. There is also a window so that you can look down from the top at the carousel. Its a special place that shouldn't be missed!
google avatar

Stephen P.

Yelp
Great family attraction in the middle of a cool little mountain town. Very much worth the $1 for kids of all ages. It's a beautiful carousel full of history, a great story behind how it all came together.
google avatar

Aaron L.

Yelp
The best, love this place! The woodwork is amazing, I think I saw something new every time during my first 6 or 7 visits. Take the kids, go!
google avatar

Terry C.

Yelp
Honestly, this is one of the coolest carousels in the nation. The story behind it is amazing, the people of Nederland are incredibly warm, and it barely costs anything. All the animals were hand-carved by the same Nederland resident. Go there. Ride twice. Check out the upstairs. Put on a puppet show for your friends. (it doesn't matter how silly it is.) Read the history. Talk to the locals. Leave feeling genuinely happy.
google avatar

Chanh S.

Yelp
Pretty cool old style carousel! It was hand carved by some dude a long time ago and just a $1 per ride! Cool spot for kids.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this three years ago while on vacation and it was one of the big highlights. So, we had to come back when we returned to the Colorado area this year. Wonderful, cheap thrill. Beautiful, creative restoration. Friendly volunteers. Lovely music. A tiny bit of history.
google avatar

Sarah O.

Yelp
Love this place. The carousel is beautiful and well-maintained. The music is fun and both kids and adults have a great time every time we come!!!

Karen L.

Yelp
What a magical place! A delightful adventure for all ages - celebrate creativity, community and joyous service in a fun and festive atmosphere. We visit again and again - ride the carousel, buy a T-shirt, support this unique and memorable and extremely special place!!
google avatar

Dorian H.

Yelp
Why am I just finding out about this? The Carousel of Happiness has the most amazing history to it. Just look it up - and then drive to Nederland and support this incredible place. The people that care for it are so wonderful. I look forward to bringing my kids here as much as possible. LOVE.

Yelp
When I think of going to my happy place, this will be it! What a charming carousel, what a beautiful story and a wonderful gift to the world. :) I have driven by this many times and thought, what a quirky place to have a carousel. But after visiting this place I realize that this is more than just a carousel, it really is a story of one mans passion, a passionate community that rallied around this project and the realization of this beautiful dream . A Vietnam veteran and local Nederland resident - Scott Harrison dreamed about the carousel in a mountain meadow as an escape from the horrors of the Vietnam war. He spent over 26 years realizing his dream through carving all of the animals and restoring the carousel to it's original grandeur. Each animal is lovingly carved and painted and you can almost feel the personality of the creator. The community raised $700,000 in 2009 to build a building to house the carousel. There's an old Wurlitzer Band organ that plays, adding to the magic of the experience. It's really a testament to his passion and the passion of a community to help a man realize the beauty of his dream. Rides are only $1 and it doesn't matter how old you are, every one is transported back to childhood on this ride. This carousel has magic - definitely go for a ride the next time you happen to find yourself in Ned.
google avatar

Kirstie H.

Yelp
It was fantastic!! We took our son their for his 2nd birthday and he loved it. The back story was really interesting and the operator John was really great! To know that the animals were hand carved is very fascinating and you appreciate it even more. Everything there is beautiful and there is a lot to see plus it's only a dollar per ride. When you go upstairs it's nice because you can create your own puppet show. It's someplace that you should visit. Planning on returning in the summer.

Teddy D.

Yelp
An example of everything wonderful in the world. The story of the carousel encompasses fear, hope, determination, community, love, skill, and a million other emotions and actions that culminate in an amazingly original piece of art in an amazing natural environment. This carousel is one of a kind and not to be missed. Seriously.
google avatar

South A.

Yelp
100% happiness! No matter how old you are, ride the carousel. Only a dollar!! You will also hear the story behind it - a Vietnam veteran carved all the animals as therapy and to give happiness to all that visit.

K Q.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting much since it's just a carousel...but I was impressed. The carousel was very unique and nothing like the standard carousels I see at malls or carnivals. It had TONS of character. I also love that they had an upstairs from which kids can view the carousel from the top. Rides are only $1, which I think its a great deal. I do wish they had the option to buy multiple rides at a discount. If they did, I didnt see it. If they had a 5 or 10 ride card, I would likely have bought it since my kid loved the carousel. Although at just $1, not having a discount for multiple rides is really not a big deal. If you go, be sure to check out the viewing area and spend time looking at the detail of the hand carved pieces. It is great for adults and kids. In fact, when I went, there were more adults than kids! One group of adults, prob. 18-25 year olds, were cheering the entire time. An employee told me that adults are always the most excited. In retrospect, I'm not surprised.
google avatar

Eden L.

Yelp
Such a great value! Nothing can beat $1 carousel rides on an old-school carousel featuring a zoo of animals.

Yelp
Woah! Coolest carrousal I've ever seen! And Price is so nice 1$ per ride . Also has an enclosed overlook over carrousal on it's second floor with cozy seating and space for puppet show and play. Such a pleasant surprise and great for kids/adults with DDs and the overlook that allows people with sensory issues to look with blocking some of the sound.
