Rising above: 8 artisanal bakeries in Singapore to try - SilverKris

"A warm, inviting artisan bakery café and vintage home store run by a team including a Cordon Bleu–trained chef, producing fresh breads, desserts and jams daily. The menu is full of comforting favourites — croissants, pain au chocolat, cinnamon rolls and buttery fruit scones — and the laidback café vibe makes it ideal for a mellow Sunday afternoon." - Joyce Chua and Sanjay Surana

Carpenter and Cook at Lorong Kilat is one of my favorite spots in Singapore! It’s a cozy café that also doubles as a lifestyle store. I love the warm, rustic vibe inside with its wooden furniture and lovely lighting—it feels so inviting. The food is delicious, with a great selection of homemade pastries and hearty meals. Their coffee is fantastic, and I can’t resist trying their cakes whenever I visit! What makes it even more special is the little shop area where you can find unique home décor and vintage items. It’s a perfect place to relax, grab a bite, and maybe pick up something special for your home. If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend stopping by!

Absolutely love the vintage vibe of this place! It's such a charming cafe, filled with beautiful furniture and decor. We came for lunch and the sandwiches were fantastic. The smoked duck sandwich was unique and delicious, and they were really generous with the amount of meat. The prosciutto sandwich was excellent as well. We paired them with a latte and an iced black coffee, which completed the perfect meal. Highly recommend this spot for a lovely afternoon.

Had a lovely lunch with family at Carpenter and Cook. We ordered a few dishes to share — the food was good and nicely done. The space has a charming retro vibe, with vintage-style tables and chairs that add character… though not the comfiest for a long sit 😅. Still, the cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it an enjoyable spot for a relaxed family meal. Will we come back again? Yes . Would love to come back and try their bakes next!

Dropped by this beautiful vintage style café over the weekend, it’s pretty busy, so expect some wait time. Service was acceptable, and the food was decent, though a little pricey for what you get. Still, not a bad spot if you’re nearby and looking for a casual bite.

*Carpenter & Cook Review** ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) **Vibe:** An **absolutely charming vintage café**—think rustic wooden furniture, nostalgic decor, and cozy corners perfect for slow afternoons. Feels like stepping into a quaint European hideaway! **Food & Drinks:** - **Drinks:** **Delicious**—whether you’re here for coffee, tea, or something special, they don’t disappoint. - **Cakes:** **Fresh, flavorful, and well-made**—worth every bite! - **Pain au Suisse:** **Not bad**, though not the star of the show. A decent choice if you're craving something buttery. **Overall:** A **solid 5/5** for atmosphere alone, but the **drinks and cakes** seal the deal. Perfect for brunch, coffee dates, or just indulging in a sweet treat. Highly recommend!

Walked in to this bakery cafe along Jalan Kilat, you can smell the strong waft of freshly baked good the moment you stepped in. I was allured to not just he viennoiserie range, the chilled pastries and tarts looked so appealing to the eyes, and I’m sure there taste good by the look of the fresh fruits (definitely will try next time). The espresso is strong and not bitter. The croissant is super crispy!

Unfortunately, quality has dropped a lot since I last came many years back. Tried the pistachio raspberry cake which tasted horribly stale. It seemed like the cake had been sitting in the display for a few days, it had a very bad taste and was extremely dry and hard. Also, it was way too sweet. The raspberry gelee layer also tasted like it had been made out of a diluted solution with very little fruit content. Ambience was nice and retro, but it definitely didn't make up for the poor quality and high price of the cake.

A hidden gem in Bukit Timah! Carpenter and Cook is a beautiful vintage-style café with a warm, cozy atmosphere — perfect for a quiet afternoon. The interior is thoughtfully decorated with charming retro details, making it a lovely spot to relax or catch up with friends. We had their cake and coffee, both were delicious and well-balanced.
