The Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes on Mackinac Island | Eater Detroit

"It’s no secret that Carriage House is one of the most scenic waterside restaurants in all of Northern Michigan, but the hospitality is just as awe-inspiring as the view. Make a dinner reservation and order chef Greg Murphy’s smoked whitefish cakes with mustard vinaigrette, beet salad with watermelon, filet mignon with morel mushrooms, or gluten-free berry zabaglione for dessert; or stop in for waterside espresso martinis over brunch. Either way, you’ll be totally wowed by how this hyper-seasonal destination manages to nab world-class servers summer after summer." - Stacey Brugeman

The Best Waterfront Restaurants in Northern Michigan | Eater Detroit

"Anyone celebrating a milestone on Mackinac Island knows about Grand Hotel, but don’t overlook Carriage House restaurant at the Hotel Iroquois, located within inches of Lake Huron and the island’s ferry harbor. Book a table on the patio for brunch or dinner, walk through the property’s meticulously manicured Victorian-style flower gardens, and dine on smoked whitefish cakes while overlooking the historic Round Island lighthouse. Don’t skip dessert. In a region where tourists are known as “fudgies,” it’s fitting that Carriage House restaurant’s ice cream puff pastry with hot fudge is a guest favorite." - Stacey Brugeman

The Carriage House on Mackinac Island is an absolute gem and easily one of the highlights of our visit to the island. From the moment we arrived, the experience was first-class all the way. The staff was incredibly warm, attentive, and professional—our server struck the perfect balance of being knowledgeable, welcoming, and never overbearing. Everyone from the host to the waitstaff seemed genuinely passionate about creating a memorable dining experience. The grounds and setting are just stunning. Located right on the waterfront, the views from the outdoor seating area are truly breathtaking. We were seated on the patio surrounded by blooming gardens, overlooking the harbor—a picture-perfect backdrop that added so much charm and elegance to our evening. The gentle sound of horses passing by and the calm lake breeze created a peaceful ambiance that you just can’t find anywhere else. As for the menu—every bite and sip felt thoughtfully crafted and regionally inspired. We began with cocktails, and the Mezcal Negroni was a bold and smoky twist on a classic—perfectly balanced and ideal for sipping while taking in the view. For starters, the smoked whitefish dip was a must-have: creamy, savory, and rich with just the right amount of smokiness, served with crisp crostini that complemented it perfectly. For our mains, the grilled shrimp and asparagus salad was fresh and vibrant, dressed lightly to let the sweetness of the shrimp and the seasonal crunch of asparagus shine. The Mackinac whitefish sandwich was another highlight—fresh-caught, lightly breaded, and served on a soft bun with a zesty remoulade. It was simple but done with finesse. The steak sandwich was hearty and indulgent, featuring tender slices of beef cooked to order, topped with caramelized onions and served with fries that were crispy and golden. For a vegetarian option, the portobello and zucchini sandwich was deeply satisfying—grilled perfectly and layered with flavor, it didn’t feel like a compromise at all. Every dish felt like it was prepared with care and attention to local ingredients. The presentation was clean and elegant, and the pacing of the meal allowed us to relax and soak in the atmosphere. Whether you're visiting Mackinac Island for the first time or returning for the hundredth, the Carriage House is a must-dine destination. It’s the perfect combination of gracious hospitality, culinary excellence, and unbeatable scenery. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Delicious meal on the water with great views. We really enjoyed our steaks and crab cake appetizer special. My husband had an impressive smoked old fashioned which he greatly enjoyed. Great for a special occasion dinner with live piano music. Our last dinner before leaving the island, glad we saved it for last 🙂

We had an unforgettable dining experience at the Carriage House Restaurant on Mackinac Island. Everything from the setting to the service was exceptional. The view of the water, elegant ambiance, and warm hospitality made it a standout evening for our family. The pasta with shrimp was a highlight—our 18 year old daughter declared it the best meal she’s ever had. The whitefish was perfectly prepared, and the decadent cream puff ice cream sundae could easily be shared by four. Every course was thoughtfully presented and delicious. We were celebrating three generations together—marking a promotion and our daughter’s acceptance to MSU—and the Carriage House made the evening feel truly special. It was, without a doubt, one of the best meals and experiences we’ve ever had.

We sat outside and loved the view and tables had sufficient privacy. We were not a fan of the spinach salad (Im not a huge fan of spinnach). Our filats were cooked perfectly and tasted wonderfully. I would recommend this as your main high end eatery on the island.

Celebrated my mother’s birthday here and every part of the meal was fantastic. The large windows overlooking the water were impressive and they had live piano music playing throughout dinner. Our server, Steve from PA, was one of the best servers I have ever had. He perfectly balanced attentiveness with allowing us time alone to enjoy our meal. He was very knowledgeable about allergies, gave great recommendations and had a fun personality. Everything we ate was spectacular. The lavash crackers and bread they bring before the meal were warm and the butter had salt on top which brought it to the next level. We started with a French onion soup and the goat cheese salad. Both were great, especially the salad. The bacon dressing tasted exactly how it sounds and paired perfectly with the goat cheese. Entrees at the table were Filet, Porkchop, NY Strip, and the Seafood Pasta. Each one was perfectly prepared. The Filet was one of the best I have ever had, cooked to a perfect medium rare and was extremely tender. The potato served under it was full of flavor and the Bernaise sauce was the perfect consistency and taste. The Porkchop was well cooked and served with wild rice. There was a cherry flavor present throughout the dish which I enjoyed. The seafood pasta was packed with meat and the sauce was lighter for a tomato sauce, which is how it should be when accompanying delicate seafood. The NY Strip was gluten free and prepared celiac safe. The vegetables and twice baked potato were also delicious. For dessert we had the Hot Fudge Cream Puff and Orange Almond Cake. Both are a great option to finish off the evening. The almond cake is very fresh but does taste heavily of orange so be prepared. Overall this was one of the best restaurants I have been to. The View, Service, and Food were all exceptional. I highly recommend this place if you want a nice meal on the island.

Gorgeous setting on the water. Beautiful Wedgewood China is their everyday dinnerware. The food is as lovely as the setting.

Google
A very aesthetic place to have a meal unfortunately, the server we got did not give reliable recommendations for the food. And I found a fly in my salad. They offered to replace the salad but no other compensation was given. Quite disappointed.

Google
The food was wonderful! And the service was friendly, kind and considerate. The hostess who made sure that we got a quiet table went above and beyond. She scoped out the restaurant and then ended up giving us a prime spot with great views of the lake and a very cool lighthouse. The lighthouse is on Round Island. Bonus kite show as well. Apparently there is a local woman who has a great array of kites that she puts up into the air. But I digress. Cali was a wonderful server who shared her knowledge of the island and of Michigan and the history. She was very kind and took care of us. The food was amazing! My wife had the scallops and the presentation and taste were top notch. I had salmon and it was delicious. The desert was nice and light and tasty. Zabaglione is one of our favorite desserts and when we see it on a menu we go for it. It did not disappoint. Over all this dinner was a fabulous experience.

Yelp
Makayla was our server and took excellent care of us. We also had pre-dinner drinks at the bar at Jake was wonderful and efficient. Justin was slightly entertaining. Overall really enjoyed the food, ambiance and service!

Yelp
The Carriage House is a classy restaurant with a beautiful lake view. The price of food is on the pricier end, which was suggestive of better quality food; however, we were slightly disappointed. We were very excited to try this place and arrived in high spirits. The hostesses who were supposed to "greet" us looked the part but merely stood there staring at us when we walked through the front door and approached the podium/check-in desk. I finally spoke and asked for a table for 2. The waitress who served us was nice and efficient, though. She checked up on us twice during the meal. Firstly, we ordered the bloody mary and mimosa. There were no complaints about the mimosa, except there was a chip in the glass, which we would not expect in a high-quality restaurant. The bloody mary was terrible. It lacked more seasoning (no spice or salt flavor profile at all). We then ordered the whitefish dip for an appetizer, which lacked seasoning as well and had a moderately sized bone (see photo for reference). I would not recommend it, especially to young kids. For lunch, we ordered the reuban sandwich and the Wagyu beef burger. The reuban was well made except the bread was a bit too greasy for my liking. The burger had a nice char, cooked to medium rare, and smokey taste but was not the best seasoning for the patty. The best part of the dishes were the fries, which were super crispy and tasty. Overall, for the price of the food and drinks, we expected a better experience. The service was mediocre, food was bland, and drinks were not the best. The only aspects we enjoyed were the beautiful views and nice ambiance.

Yelp
Oh boy I hate leaving reviews like this. But if you are going to charge $79 for a steak you better make sure it's exquisite. Mine was cooked perfectly, good flavor, but overall was a was a tough rubbery mess. Steak was billed as American Wagu (should have been my first red flag). It was super thin like something you would see at outback steakhouse think sirloin. Absolutely not worth even 20$ cut. I've had better steaks at my local breakfast joint. Also steak lacked salt, background flavor profiles good however lacking salt- and I don't even like salty things. Pros. The ambiance was amazing. The piano player was a nice touch. The drinks okay. The service was definitely very good. That's the only reason I'm giving them two stars. Also my salad was pretty good. My advice to the restaurant is get a new meat supplier because that was not worthy of even $20.

Yelp
Another wonderful meal at the Iroquois Hotel's Carriage House! Tonight's venison chop special was amazing. Venue is breathtaking. Service was well intentioned but a bit inconsistent - like waiter forget to bring my soup and went straight to the entrees.

Yelp
We spotted this beautifully located patio when disembarking the Star Line ferry. After putting our name in at another restaurant, we attempted to get away from the crowds. After reaching what seemed to be the end of the main street, we were so pleased to find no wait for patio seating here. The deck bar was just opening at 2pm Sunday for anyone wanting to grab a drink with an even better view. Our server could not have been more friendly. Food came out timely and was even better than described on the menu. See picture for specifics. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone seeking a more intimate lunch or dinner away from the masses.

Yelp
We fell in love with this charming and delightful restaurant! The views were spectacular and the food and beverage menus were outstanding. Such a charming and lovely venue with great service! After lunch you can walk around by the water. After dinner you can enjoy a drink in the dock. This place is a must do.

Yelp
Out of all the restaurants we visited on our Mackinac Island vacation, Carriage House was definitely the best. We came here for lunch. I started with the Mile Marker, which was a cinnamon latte. It was so good. Both my mom and my sister got the Bellini Martini, and they said it was very tasty. My mom and I started with the smoked whitefish dip, since we had seen it on the menu at every restaurant on the island we felt like we had to try it. It was SOO GOOD. It was just the right amount of smoky and the crostini was toasted perfectly. My mom and I both got reuben sandwiches based on our waitress's recommendation, which were some of the best reubens we've ever had. My sister got the grilled vegetable sandwich, which was alright. We sat outside on the water, which was beautiful. The service was amazing. Our waitress was very attentive and nice. Later that day, we went to the dock here and had Docktails; we both had Aperol Spritzes. The chairs there were so comfy and it was a nice day to relax at the end of the day.

Yelp
This place was pretty meh to be honest. The ambiance was beautiful but you really pay for the experience with how pricy the menu and subpar the food was. The Caesar salad was literally tasteless, it has zero flavor and the shrimp was rubbery. The steak salad was ok but nothing special. The feta salad was pretty good but you know it's a bit of a bummer if a salad beats out a steak sandwich. I wouldn't come again. Service and place was beautiful but that's all

Yelp
Came on a Thursday in September. Made reservations over the phone which was painless. Was told the place was closed Friday and Saturday due to a private event (later found out it was the owner's daughter's wedding), But we weren't told the views would be crap for our Thursday dinner. Little did we know that our views would be totally obstructed for our dinner reservation on Thursday for preparation of this wedding. Felt gypped out of the experience of the Carriage House because of it. Instead of looking out at the straits of Mackinac we were watching a bunch of dudes put together this massive event space outside with tons of cables, ladders, chandlers, etc. How romantic! Especially when you are paying such a premium for an upscale dining experience. Anyways, we entered the Carriage House to the side, we didn't enter through the hotel. The flowers and walkway to the Carriage House was absolutely stunning. The different amounts of flowers and greenery was very impressive. Inside is very bright and welcoming. Lots of cheerful colors. Beautiful china is served with your food. Tons of drink options. I went with the Bellini martini and it was delicious. Glass was perfectly chilled and it was refreshing. Bread and butter are complimentary served. Dinner wise I went with the scallops and my husband got the veal. I thought my dinner portion was pretty small. I was decently hungry after we left. My husband had a better sized portion with his meal. Taste wise my husband's was excellent and mine was ok, my food didn't taste much of anything. Our waiter was attentive, a little stuffy/robotic but I guess that's expected with upscale dining service. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. But again the wedding set up really killed the mood and ambience of the restaurant. Was hoping to sit outside and enjoy the views everyone praises so much. Definitely one of the more expensive places on the island.

Yelp
Love love The Carriage house, if anything just pop in for lunch or dinner and get the French onion soup, best French onion soup ever. Service was amazing, atmosphere is very classic, loved the music, cocktails, and food. We just ordered a bunch of things and shared them for my boyfriends birthday. We sat at the bar and loved our bartender. Wish I took more pictures of the food to share but had empty plates by the time I remembered to take a picture haha. Reservations highly recommend unless you can find bar seats

Yelp
Back at a favorite! . We love the carriage house - superb food, gorgeous views, fantastic service. A great way to get away from the hustle of downtown and find a short reprieve if you have small children

Yelp
If it was possible to give more than 5 stars I would because this truly was the best meal I have had all year. Everything was outstanding from the bread all the way down to dessert. The restaurant was beautiful, the pianist set a great vibe for the meal and our server was friendly and knowledgeable. I couldn't recommend it more - I have been to many different places on the island and this one is definitely my favorite. We had the fillet, Mediterranean Pasta, and pesto pasta with morels as the main dishes. In my opinion the best thing was the spinach and goat cheese salad it was unbelievably good. Which we had first before the entrees and for dessert we had the peanut butter pie and the grasshopper. For drinks we had the Bellini martini and cucumber gimlet and we had to order multiple rounds because they were so good and didn't skimp on the alcohol either! Overall I will be raving about this meal for years to come and have already told friends and family it's a must do for their upcoming visits to the island. If you are going to have one nice meal while you're on Mackinac make it this one, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Yelp
Somehow in my two summers living on the island I never made it here, but recently visited the island as a tourist and tried it out! From the ease of moving my reservation time, the servers great conversation/recommendations, and then the delicious drinks and food I am making eating/drinking at carriage house a priority on my trips in the future!! Oh and that view!!! You really can't beat it!

Yelp
Our first trip to Mackinac Island and our first dinner at this place. Was worth the stop. The drinks were excellent, the service was better and the food was excellent. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the lovely weather since we are from Arizona. The temperatures were great. Our server did a wonderful job and we split a seafood stew with pasta that was outstanding.... Highly recommend this spot on the water. Was a great evening.

Paul S.

Yelp
Really lovely ambiance and great cocktails. Gorgeous landscaping and butterfly gardens. The $74 filet was not what it should've been, though. Tasted steamed or almost boiled. Waitress was gracious in removing from tab. Would recommend for drinks and an appetizer. That's it.

Yelp
We love this place! We come to Makinac island every year and we always come here. The food is high quality and very yummy. While it is a little pricy, the overall feel of the place makes it seem like you area famous celebrity! Everyone's super nice and helpful, and if you happen to be there on a good day, you can sit outside and there is a lounge dock area. Super pretty!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Great staff. Great drinks. Great food. Great ambiance- live pianist playing during our whole dinner.

Yelp
We had a 745pm reservation and waited at least 15 minutes to be seated even though we saw lots of empty tables. We were seated on the patio as requested and it is beautiful. However, there is a large space next to the patio that had boxes, industrial equipment, unused furniture etc. that marred a bit of the beauty. (Not a huge deal but noticed) The dinner menu is very limited for entrees. We each started with a salad. They were delicious, fresh and noticeable high quality ingredients. Friend had the Whitefish. It was a nice size portion and tasty. The pork chop was unremarkable. Needed salt and pepper. The sauce was good but not great. The mushroom risotto was very good, the vegetables were fresh. The pomegranate sparkler and the French martini were delicious. Anthony was charming and courteous and knew the menu well.

Paula B.

Yelp
Very good dinner and wine selections! Friendly servers. I would give 5 stars however I witnessed a server setting a table, dropping forks on the ground and then putting those forks back on the table. The piano music was amazing!
google avatar

Dina E.

Yelp
Classic, fine dining would be the best way to describe the Carriage House. Beautiful views of the harbor with sprawling foliage and seagulls flying about. There was a piano player who played classic tunes softly in the dining room. Our waiter Carlos, was well-aquatinted with the menu and helped us make great selections throughout the evening. He was friendly, funny and helped make our evening out fun! We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and it was a perfect venue for a special occasion. Prices were reasonable for the quality of the food which was spectacular! The ambiance and overall feel was formal, with an older crowd, so keep that in mind for the type of evening you're envisioning. There was a large bar that seemed to cater to business owners and well to do locals, because I recognized a couple of shop owners. The wine and cocktail selections were nice and the pours were adequate. We had filet mignon, chicken dumpling soup, the crab tower, salad, and the peanut butter pie for dessert, all delish! Would we go back??? In a heartbeat!

Lisa C.

Yelp
Worst experience in all my life. Made a reservation. Requested outside that only had 2 tables with people. Our request was denied. Inside had 8-10 open tables and they sat us next to the very noisy bar area. Couldn't even hear my husband talk. Asked to be moved and they and they said they would look into it. Started to walk out and a manager tried to stop us but wouldn't seat us outside. For their prices, we were treated terribly and should have been treated like royalty. Ate at Kingston Kitchen at the Village Inn. Had an amazing meal and service was awesome.
google avatar

Chelsea D.

Yelp
Wow. Wow. And wow. The atmosphere was so relaxing and enjoyable. There was an extremely talented piano player (rich) playing in the background, we were placed right next to a large window overlooking the gardens and patio. Just beautiful. Our waiter, Taylor, was INCREDIBLE. So professional, kind and helpful. Knew the menu like the back of his hand, made great suggestions! At the very end we found out that my parents had paid for our meal (all the way from back home) as an anniversary gift for my husband and I! And he knew the whole time and played it off SO well! Food was amazing! Whitefish was perfectly cooked. Mediterranean pasta was delicious. We ended with a cheesecake topped with raspberry's, which was also incredible! Thank you carriage house for this wonderful memory

Rosy C.

Yelp
This was a darling of a place. We had lunch here and it made me feel as if I were having lunch with the "Bridgertons". The server was great - the views were amazing. The menu and entire color scheme are calming. They're located right on the water and as far as I can tell, they were having renovations/expansion done on the outside -  I can tell that it is going to be more grand. Hubby and I enjoyed our lunch and drinks. Note: Just take a left when you vacate your ferry and it is the last white building at the end. Such a dreamy place.
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
Loved this place. Really good wine list and the food was spot in. Creative sauces, nice at osphere, well kept up I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. Expensive and worth it.

M H.

Yelp
The best seafood on the island. Beautiful setting and atmosphere. Excellent food and presentation. Only one recommendation- add a higher end Pinot noir to round out the options Excellent restaurant and service.
google avatar

Pamela R.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with vibrant flowers throughout the patio area right on the water! We started with the chartecurie plate (flaked crab, salami, assorted mild cheeses, olives and toast). I ordered the fish sandwich which was tasty and light but could've used some texture in the sandwich, maybe a crispy citrus slaw to compliment the fish. My husband enjoyed the delicious BLT with a slightly spicy dressing. The pomegranate mimosas are a lovely slightly sweet, bubbly compliment to the meal. The service was as spectacular as the food and lake side setting. Highly recommend this restaurant when you're on mackinac island!
google avatar

Kurt F.

Yelp
Absolutely great service. The view!!! Wow. We sat outside and soaked it all in. The food was great, not out of this world, but solid! I ordered the shrimp cocktail and the shrimp were fab but the sauce lacked zing. A bit like ketchup. The French onion soup was great. And the pesto pasta with morel mushrooms was quite good. Wonderful experience overall!
google avatar

Duane K.

Yelp
Cool setting with a patio right on Lake Michigan. I would recommend sitting outside if it is a nice day. French onion soup was some of the best I'd ever had. I ordered the burger and it was average, but I sampled the open faced crab melt from someone else in my party and it was great.

Minyi D.

Yelp
In our opinion, this is the best restaurant on the island. We'v tried other fine dining (1852 Grill and Chianti). We love the Carriage House the best. We are so glad to stay at Iroquois. It's newly renovated! Grand Hotel is just a popular spot but the rooms and services are no comparison. Not to mention that it's so old.
google avatar

Jeppy L.

Yelp
Hands down the best restaurant on the island. Over our trip, my family ate at several places. I was beginning to think there really wasn't a stand out place. This place delivered on all fronts. Several servers attentive to the tables. Drinks refilled. Recommendations on food. Frozen drinks for kids. The kids menu is as good, if not better than, the pinkish stallion and others. Great views of the water. Escargot was the best I've had. Presentation was gorgeous. Beet salad refreshing. Ingredients fresh. Steak was cooked perfect medium rare. If you are planning a trip to the island, plan a night out here. It is the best food at Mackinac. Thanks Taylor (server) for a great evening! P.S. Heads up. It is expensive. Also, it is wise to bring a light jacket. The patio gets a little chilly when the sun starts to set.

Great food and staff Alexis was very kind and helpful . We had a great lunch . With the view it was very relaxing.

Yelp
We made online reservations and indicated it was our Anniversary. We actually got a call to confirm the reservation and they politely were able to move it an hour earlier. We arrived on time and were seated about 5 minutes later. Our server was friendly and attentive and served our beer & wine. We ordered French onion soup (which was very good). She apologized that there were 2 large groups dining and she would do the best she could to get us our pasta dish and tenderloin. She apologized at least 8 times during the wait for our food. We were served about 90 minutes later. The pasta was OK, but the steak wasn't good. It totally lacked flavor and the bernaise sauce had a shine to it, was cold and the potato and vegetables were coldish too. My wife didn't finish anything on her plate. I had a taste of her food ( it was not good ) and it wasn't at all what we were used to experiencing during our many prior visits. We paid and mentioned to our server and then to two staff at the host stand that we were very disappointed in our meal and dining experience. Everyone apologized. That was it. Nobody found a manager. Nothing but " sorry". Oh, and nobody ever acknowledged our Anniversary. We leave the Island in the morning and we really regret our choice for our Anniversary meal. Reluctantly, our review is posted to point out that this highly regarded restaurant had a very bad night.

Jamie R.

Yelp
Fantabulous meal and service. Ava was our server and did an outstanding job. If you are looking for an excellent dinner at a reasonable price for an upscale restaurant, then the Carriage House is the place to go. Ten times better than the Woods.

Tim K.

Yelp
Pricey, but worth it. Ambience on the patio is terrific at sunset, and the food is very good. Service was top notch as well. We had a wonderful experience.

Matt P.

Yelp
Service was terrible. Stopped in to have a cold beer on the dock and the waiter would not serve us after we told him we were wanting to order a drink. We had planned on making dinner reservations for the next evening. But not now. We took our business & money elsewhere.

Lynne G.

Yelp
The service was the worst I have ever had for a high-end dining establishment. Our server was condescending, rude and slow. I spoke to the manager when we left, and she dismissed my comments as if I was not important. It was clear they cater to a certain clientele, and our party did not fit the mold.

Chandra P.

Yelp
Food was not good. Views and service were good. Had the oyster special. So tiny. Whitefish heavy on paprika. Etc. etc. not good.

Yelp
!! Attention POC do NOT eat here!! My husband and I decided to eat at The Carriage House when staying on the island to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary. We made a reservation in advance for a Wednesday night. When we arrived for our reservation the hostess ( a shorter woman with short blonde hair) didn't greet us until we spoke to her. She pretended like we weren't even there. We didn't let it phase us; we just assumed she had terrible customer service. While we waited to be seated a white couple walked in, and the same hostess did a 180. She was helpful, friendly, and pleasant. We were taken back because of how quickly she changed. I would like to preface that my husband and I are friendly and easygoing individuals, so we couldn't figure out what was so different between us and the other couple. Maybeee it's because my husband and I are both POC. Hmmm. A man then showed us to a table. He was similar to the hostess, unfriendly. He sat us at a table inside even though we requested an outside table (there was ample sitting outside). No biggie, we again asked if we could sit at a table outside; he (literally) huffed and told us to go back up front. Wow! Magical! He acknowledged our existence. This man (I'm assuming was a manager) and the hostess whispered to one another as if sitting us outside was some monumental task, even though it wasn't busy and there were more servers and tables outside. This time the same hostess showed us to our table outside (yay, finally). Which was by far the worst table in the entire restaurant. Oh joy! It was a table right in front of the door so any time someone came outside/inside we were right there. Even though there were several other tables available. At this point we just sat down. The hostess (again) did not even make eye contact with us, talk to us, or even really acknowledge us. She gave us the menus--looking absolutely distressed the entire experience--left without saying a word. The white couple that came in after us was seated outside as well. The same hostess sat them at a nice table next to the heater. And again, the hostess was smiling, cheerful, and actually acting like a human. At this point my husband and I were debating on just getting up and getting food somewhere else because up until this point it was such an ordeal. We were treated like second class citizens. With BLATANT racism and discrimination. None of this would've been an issue if the white couple was treated the same way but that wasn't the case. We deal with racism often which we--typically--try to brush off but this experience was different. They weren't even trying to hide the fact that they didn't want us there. If you made it this far, congratulations and thank you to coming to my TedTalk on "Why not to eat at The Carriage House." Do not eat at this establishment that treats POC differently. What year is it? Eat here if you want to support restaurant that treats POC differently. TL;DR: My husband and I experience blatant racism at this establishment. We were treated completely differently from a white couple who came in after right after us. They're racists. Don't eat here

Yelp
We had a lovely time here for a romantic dinner. Food was terrific, flavours, preparation and presentation. Tasteful ambiance and great views of the lake. Special shout out to our server Jackie from Troy who gave us fantastic service - including detailed knowledge of the dishes on the menu.

Yelp
I am on vacation on Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackinaw). This is definitely the best restaurant I've found on the island so far. I came here for lunch AND dinner in the same day, as they have totally different menus and a beautiful atmosphere and view. For lunch I had the farmer's board (charcuterie) and the pesto turkey panini with fries. Everything was delicious! For dinner I got a french cheese filled pasta in a creamy pesto sauce... I added grilled shrimp. Really was dissapointed that they have zero chicken in their kitchen. In the end of it all I probably shouldn't have added the shrimp. Oh well... now I know! Overall great experience.

Yelp
Gorgeous day to dine outdoors at the Carriage House for lunch. Location and view is fantastic. Drinks and food were good. We had the old fashioned, lake breeze, whitefish sandwich and the BLT. Lemon Meringue pie for dessert was best of all! Staff is stretched thin at most establishments, so patience and kindness while they do their best is appreciated. The staff at the Carriage House did a great job today!

Yelp
We absolutely love coming here for lunch on the water every summer! The staff are great and very professional. The food is always amazing. Have been getting the open faced crab melt and a glass of iced tea for 10 years. It never fails to be tasty and the view is unbeatable in northern Michigan.

Yelp
Another great dinner with awesome service by Jade. A large party(10, who already had a few drinks in them) but she handled us with grace and finesse. 5 bottles of champagne and great entrees. Whitefish again, but the special of the evening, roasted red snapper was the star. A great bday cake as well for our special vent. The star of the island.

Yelp
We enjoyed our patio lunch at our favorite restaurant on the island. At the waiter's recommendation, I had the grilled shrimp and asparagus salad. Every component was cooked perfectly. My husband enjoyed his wagu beef burger. The view of the ferry dock from the patio was fun. Although the servers seemed to have only one or two tables a piece, our waiter was quite inattentive and failed to refill our beer, iced tea or water. I should have made dinner reservations days before so that we could have had dinner there instead of lunch.

Yelp
Wow this place looked great. The menu was very inviting! Too bad the staff wasn't! the place was empty. Ok ok, there were three people dining, amidst about 25 empty tables. And the three young timid hostesses looked at the three of us and one said "oh, I'm sorry we don't have any openings tonight." oh oh, I get it - my husband was wearing jeans and sneakers, and my daughter had her sweatpants on, cuz ah yea, we're on vacation. I never understood snobbery like this cuz our money is green and spends the same. No worries though, we dropped our $120 on dinner at Great Turtle Brewery & Distillery instead! And next time we're in town, and wearing "appropriate attire", we'll be certain to again, not spend our dollars to eat at The Carriage House.

Yelp
This is a beautiful restaurant on the water with both inside and outside comfortable seating. Easy listening music playing inside. The food was amazing and the staff were friendly.

Yelp
Spectacular food and the waitering service was wonderful. We got to know of the waiters as well and it was insightful.

Yelp
Waitress was great. Food was not. Escargot, while good, was difficult to retrieve from the shell. Smoked whitefish cakes appetizer was very good. Walleye special - fish was excellent, pasta and veggies forgettable. The seafood pasta was disappointing. The scallops were good as they were the only protein, especially calamari & octopus not overdone. Shrimp was passable and pasta quite uninteresting. For the price, I would never return. On the very positive side, the $80 bottle of wine did t disappoint, and the live piano music was great. Music great but not Intrusive.

Yelp
The Carriage House is a wonderful place to sit down by the shore and enjoy a drink while you watch the ships. We enjoyed a beer and a glass of Chardonnay while sitting under an umbrella in an outside table. The view, as you can see, is almost worth the price of admission. Almost. Teara - our attentive and friendly server - warned us that the hummus appetizer was small - at $14 - and she wasn't exaggerating. There was a small cup - maybe 2 ounces of hummus - with olives and a dozen crispy pita chips. Tasty, but not worth the price. But, did I mention that the view is amazing? This does offset the cost somewhat. I need to return to see if the (pricy) entrees are worth the price. Until then, I'll be happy to share a drink here and enjoy the view.

Yelp
charming place at the iroquis hotel. dinner was good but pricey, our server carter was very nice. the big issue we had is that our pre dinner cocktail was served by a sarcastic, cocky jerk (big guy who has been there 20 years,Justin , it think) . what gives this guy the right to harass customers? very disappointing esp after paying $22 dollars for a drink.
