We came here to celebrate a special date night. Our entire experience was wonderful start to finish. The truffle butter rolls and oysters Rockefeller were delicious apps. The star of the show was the Parisian gnocchi that was so savory with subtle apple flavor. The NY strip was cooked perfectly and oh so very tender. We finished the meal with the apple galette which had a great balance of sweet and saltiness with the caramel sauce. Our server Erin was so friendly and knowledgeable and when she saw we couldn’t decide on dessert that she brought a slice of cheesecake with our selection on the house. The cozy atmosphere and attentive staff made our night special. We got reservation a week in advance just so you know!

Staying in Rye with family. The Carriage House was within walking distance. Tried to get reservations on Tuesday, the place was filled up on open table really fast. So we made reservations for Wednesday. Such a great meal! Dan was our server and was knowledgeable and a pleasure. The food was outstanding! Soup to nuts one of the favorite new places we’ve tried this year. An ocean gem! We started with delicious oysters and the mushroom toast, (which could be one of the tastiest bites I have experienced ever)! I had the halibut dish, it was summer on a plate with the sweet corn and grilled peaches! My husband had the speck wrapped monkfish, it was beautiful! Highly recommend!

I had been wanting to try this restaurant for quite some time and finally made a reservation a few weeks ago—and I was so impressed that I brought my parents back to celebrate their birthdays. From the cozy atmosphere to the genuinely friendly staff, the restaurant feels warm and inviting from the moment you walk in. We ordered several appetizers and entrées, and everything was excellent. Special shoutout to the white fish pâté, it was outstanding. We also couldn’t help but notice a giant pile of fries passing by our table, so of course we had to order them, and they absolutely did not disappoint (we ate every last one). On our first visit, the food took a little longer to come out, which we honestly didn’t even notice because we were enjoying our conversation. The staff was incredibly attentive, the waitress came over to apologize, and the owner personally stopped by twice and even treated us to complimentary espressos. That level of care really stood out. Both times we visited, the owner was actively working and seating guests, which is refreshing to see and speaks volumes about how much he cares about the restaurant and the experience he provides. I’ll be spending a lot of time in the Seacoast next year, and this restaurant will absolutely be one of my regular spots. Highly recommend.

Google
Stayed at the Victoria Inn and told the owner I was headed out to a different restaurant. He stopped me and told me I had to go to the Carriage House. So glad I took his recommendation. It was clear it was an exclusive venue with mainly well to do regulars and I’m glad I waited for the bar seating. Drinks and food were absolutely top notch. I’d love to come back with my family if we visit again!

Google
Carriage House shattered all of my expectations. The meal was one of the best I've had in recent years. During the winter, the building gives off such a cozy, warm feeling. We were sat near the window, but the baseboard heaters kept me nice and toasty. The service is unmatched! Our server kept our drinks, appetizers, and entrees spaced out so we could enjoy ourselves. Their cocktail menu is innovative. The 1989 is one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time. Our server gave me a list of ingredients so I could replicate it at home. We shared the Fish Pate' and blistered Shishito Peppers. The Fish Pate' was loaded with creamy white fish and stacked with mustard seeds. The flavors blended well. For dinner, we ordered the Pan-Seared Cod and Grilled Swordfish. They were a hit, and we nibbled off of each other plates! Menu prices are a bit expensive, but the quality matches the price. We finished with the Oatmeal Cream Pie, which sealed the deal that we will return when it's more lively in the summer.

Google
A really great meal start to finish: Short rib stuffed fried olives Old fashioned with Bulleit Rye was done perfectly, a really great wed wine blend, espresso martini Blue fin tart tare Parker house rolls with black truffle butter Lobster gnocchi with shaved black truffle Hanger steak Peanut butter pie with meringue Everything was out of this world

Google
Salt fat acid sweet umami. Don’t put crème fresch with gnocchi finished in butter & duck confit. Balance it with citrus or vinegar. Also, the halibut sauce was not tight & was watery. Veg on the halibut dish was trimmed expertly. Cheers to the bartender. Grasshopper and brandy alexander were classical done- clean and sharpen the microplane for finer nutmeg on the brandy drink.

Google
We’ve been told that it was the place to go in the area and I’d have to agree! The cocktail list was expensive and delicious. The service was quick but never rushed. The staff seemed very o work well together. The staff were so helpful in letting me know what was gluten free and knowledgeable about cross contamination which is so refreshing. And expensive meal but well worth it.

Yelp
A truly top notch culinary experience in seacoast New Hampshire. The setting is perfect for a date night and while the restaurant is small, it makes for an intimate setting. We typically make a reservation to avoid having to wait or not being able to get a table. Their scallops are to die for and they have an amazing selection of wine and cocktails. It's truly rare to find such an impeccable fine dining experience in such a small town in New Hampshire, but Carriage House does just that!

Yelp
Loved the ambiance. All of our food was amazing, our favorite bite was the mushroom toast which was recommended by our server. It was phenomenal!! So rich and we ate every bite. Drinks were pretty good. Would've loved to try more dishes!

Wow!!

Yelp
Wow wow wow! Came here for our anniversary and boy are we glad we did. The parking was pretty good and the weather was horrible due to the fact that it was raining hard and no sun or moon but that didn't stop us from making our reservations on this spot. Once parked and walked inside we were greeted and seated for our reservations. We started off with raw oysters from all over the east coast and a coupe of shrimps. Next we had this olive dish that was stuff with meat. Each olive had meat inside and was fried to perfection. For our entrees, I order the Duck Confit Gratin and it was very good. The Duck was moist and not dry and everything went well with the dish. My other half ordered the Gulf of Maine Fluke and I'm not a fish eater unless it's raw but I gave it a try and it tasted good. For dessert I ordered the Fennel Almond Torte and it consists of mascarpone ice cream, candied fennel, crème anglaise, almond crumble. It was amazing and I wanted more but was too full. I highly recommend this place for an anniversary dinner or a romantic dinner.

Yelp
Serving some of the best food on the NH Seacoast the carriage house is a great restaurant. Very unique menu. Ambiance is cozy. The pasta dishes were delicious with large portions. Plenty of seafood options. A must try.

Lauren H.

Yelp
Went and had a little wait to sit at the bar since we didn't have reservations. The bartender provided great beverage (wine) recommendations and the food was excellent. Definitely worth it for a splurge dinner date.

Yelp
We have not been to the Carriage House for many years, and it is under new ownership and remodeled. We tried them out during restaurant week and were delighted with the food, service and atmosphere. Years ago we found the restaurant to be dark and the food only average. Happy to say that has all changed for the better! The restaurant week menu offered 3 courses, with a large selection of choices, which all sounded great, it was hard to choose! They do offer parker house rolls as well, these are offered for an additional $5, and so glad we tried them. Four big, hot delicious rolls were presented. Portions were very large, in fact our waitress made a point to tell us that they serve full size portions for restaurant week. We don't typically order three courses each, and often will share an appetizer and dessert, so we found ourselves only able to eat a portion of each course. Yes, there was an abundance of food! Cocktails were great, our server was friendly and overall we found service from the kitchen to be good. We did notice a small lull between our appetizer and mains, but they were busy. The short rib entree was delicious, a big piece of melt in your mouth beef, beautifully presented. Both the bread pudding and chocolate budino for dessert were also quite good. We will be back to work our way deeper into the menu. I'm glad we gave them a try for restaurant week!

Yelp
The restaurant is small and unassuming but it is an absolute treasure. The staff is amazing, knowledgeable and helpful. The food is delicious and was perfectly cooked. The cocktails were great. I love that they have local oysters and other local seafood.

Yelp
So other than a really long wait in spite of a reservation, that is the last bad thing I have to say about this place. RJ provided incredible service, the menu was both extensive and creative. The execution by the kitchen was spot on. Even the cocktails were inspired. Toss in a small selection of the best local oysters and Dessert was amazing. There is nothing not to love. You cannot go wrong with The Carriage House

Carol R.

Yelp
For years this has been my fave restaurant. Their haddock ricotta is the best I've ever had- order it almost always. Miss the old ambiance- fireplace dining in winter. Many good memories
google avatar

Yelp
New ownership has made a tremendous difference in quality and experience. The calamari salad is absolute heaven!! Entrees were all outstanding and the bread pudding dessert was the perfect finale. Bartender is very creative, I loved the Boogaloo which is their take on an Old Fashioned

Yelp
The service and atmosphere are amazing. The drinks and food are always tremendous I highly recommend.

Yelp
What an amazing meal we had tonight at The Carriage House. RJ provided superb service and the appetizers (Oysters Rockefeller and Mushroom Toast) and entrees (Lobster Gnocchi and Flounder) were exquisitely prepared and presented. The view from table 205 looked out to the ocean, a perfect New England evening.

Andrea T.

Yelp
Always excellent , food , atmosphere, service , cocktails ,went last evening and the food was exceptional. Truffles with pasta, a delicious chicken dish , oysters Rockefeller , steak tar tare , home made rolls, and there French fries which are so good ! . We had a feast

Timothy M.

Yelp
My wife and I have been to the new "Carriage House" three times sorry to say there won't be a fourth. While the food could be good it's just way too salty. First time my wife got the duck it was so salty it was inedible. We went again last night we got a couple of appetisers the duck pate was so salty, had great flavor except for the salt. It was also served in a thick piece of crostini on the bottom?? By the time we finished it the crostini was soggy. So wish the original restaurant was back, great menu, was our go to restaurant, not once did we have a bad meal.

Yelp
I wanted to give this place 5 stars, but I felt some things were lacking. I know I see a lot of other 5 stars reveiw on here and maybe I am just picky, but I did not love the food here (location, ambiance, service, were all amazing). I thought some of the dishes that we had lacked in flavor and balance. We did have an amazing table with a great view and our server Heather was excellent. I did love the Oysters the best and those Rolls are to die for as well. My husband had the Corn Agnolotti which was also quite good, but lacked in some flavors. For entrees I ordered the Scallops which were good. My husband ordered the Short Ribs which he said were just ok. Their cocktail menu looked amazing but was a bit disappointed in the actual taste of some of the cocktails mainly the Spritz, which I had to send back because I did not enjoy it. And, for a Wine Bar (which they call themselves) I wish they had some higher end wines on here. Or maybe more of a selection that is organic or natural, something to pair well with their menu items. But, overall great place and I would love to give them another try sometime. Also, very expensive but I do think for the area is probably quite resonable. Cheers!

Yelp
A surprising place, on the main road in Rye, where we had a lovely dinner on our recent trip to coastal NH and ME. I say surprising because it looks like an old home, very unlike the businesses and mansions nearby. The food was delicious. My friend, still being kind of full from lunch, had the Arugula Salad, and we shared the Parker House rolls. I had the Braised Short Rib. For dessert we shared the Caramel Pot de Creme. Our waitstaff was friendly and attentive, just perfect, and we weren't rushed to leave. The ambience was comfortable and not too noisy, so it was nice to linger. I will say, make a reservation or you may not get in. It's a very popular place with the local people.

Carol S.

Yelp
The Carriage House is an excellent dining experience. Whenever we visit the New Hampshire seacoast we always visit for dinner. This was our fourth trip to the establishment. RJ was our server, and provided us with terrific service. Please, do yourself a favor by visiting the Carriage House when in Rye, New Hampshire. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Had not been here in over a year while vacationing in Rye NH. The new chef is really accomplished, Brian Flach. We started with the special appetizer, shaved black truffles on pasta. Unreal. Perfectly cooked al dente pasta with light butter sauce. The shaved truffles were firm and flavorful. For the entrée I had the scallops with micro greens and bacon lardons with a beautiful sauce, and my partner had the pan-seared Arctic Char-- crispy and really moist inside. Really nice polenta & micro greens on both dishes. There was a special dessert of chocolate ice cream with dollops of meringue peaks and a special type of cherry on top. The restaurant is charming, with a view of the ocean on the second floor, and the owner R.J., is attentive and friendly. I live in Seaport/Fort Point Boston & am surrounded by amazing restaurants but this is one of the best meals I've had in a long time.Highly recommend.

Yelp
The Carriage House has great ambiance inside, cozy and quaint but modern look and feel. I recommend a reservation unless you want to try to snag a spot at the bar. Craft style cocktails, raw oysters were great, Parker house rolls were great. My friend got the ragu and I got the flank steak and we split fries. Everything was delicious. Sorry I forgot pics!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent meal here. Great server and nicely paced meal. We had not been here in a while and we so enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere. We will be regulars here!

Yelp
Charming setting on the coast and even lovelier inside. All the staff friendly and helpful. The food! The food! Every single dish was a piece of art and tasted phenomenal. The shrimp was fresh, cocktail sauce with extra horseradish. Gnocchi...I am not a fan usually, but this I could have eaten the whole fish. The fish was fresh and flaky, A fantastic stop! With a glimpse of the ocean, can't be beat!

Yelp
Outstanding service. Great ambience and delicious meal. We ate there last Saturday and had a fantastic meal. The mushroom toast appetizer is a must, have as well as the Monkfish. James is doing great work there.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is so unique and amazing every time we go here. And the bartenders and drinks are top notch. Everyone is kind and knowledgeable. We go here whenever we can squeeze it in.

Yelp
Had a wonderful first time birthday experience here last night, had a reservation for 2 outside, and even though it was a bit chilly, everything was amazing, from the server, to the drinks and the food. Would love to come back. Started with Parker house rolls and corn ravioli, followed by lobster gnocchi and my female companion had the short rib. We split an apple bread pudding for dessert which was phenomenal, and drinks were great. Definitely go here, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Phenomenal experience at this seaside gem on the New Hampshire coastline. On Easter Saturday, they were busy but service was fast, friendly and welcoming. Their specials included truffle and an incredible lamb dish, the cocktails were on point and the salads were fresh, tasty and well made. The upstairs has a nice tavern-like atmosphere, while the downstairs is a little more formal and reserved. Will definitely be repeating this experience again in the future.
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
The service is top notch! The bread is warm and tasty. The calamari was delish and fresh! We enjoyed the monk fish and char and both were yummy!

Yelp
This is one of my all time favorite places and i've been here once. Came for NYE and realized I never reviewed. Obsessed! It was so good, food was amazing, staff was incredible. Hoping to do NYE as a new tradition here

Yelp
One of the best restaurant experiences I've had in NH. The service (Heather), ambiance, cocktail, and food were amazing!!! Can't wait to go back :)

Yelp
A comfy, cozy place featuring a chill atmosphere and enjoyable music. Efficient, attentive service from very pleasant server Julia, and a menu that has something for everyone. Good food sure to make you want to return again and again.

Yelp
I honestly really like this restaurant. The ambiance is lovely; the service is consistently excellent, which is impressive since many restaurants are struggling to find valuable help; dishes look beautiful, and the menu is diverse, interesting, and current. The wine list is perfectly balanced with many choices at reasonable prices. BALANCE was actually what the waiter shared when describing the specials as we chatted further about foods and wines and such. Unfortunately, while the primary tastes of all of our dishes were good, they were all a little too salty. I hate to say this but I'm sure the engaging and wonderful owners would want to know. The saltiness was a consistent table comment as we still enjoyed a lovely time. To note, we had mushroom toast, endive salad, whitefish, hamburger, swordfish, oysters, chicken liver pate' and fried olives. While a couple these dishes are inherently salty, like the olives and white fish, the others simple just had too much. We will go back because we know this is not typical for this wonderful establishment.

Stacy S.

Yelp
Laura was amazing! Tentative, passionate, and always smiling! We went for our wedding anniversary and it was perfect. Great ambiance and location.

Laura B.

Yelp
Been here twice. Lots of variety on the menu including burgers, pizza and pasta. Well stocked bar and attentive table service.

Yelp
Anniversary dinner! Driven by for so many years, why did we wait??? Superb dinner from fish chowder to the Pork Schnitzel, we are looking forward to sharing this find with our friends and family! The waitress did not give us the special of the day, we overheard her at the next table, oops.

Yelp
We dine in Portsmouth frequently due to the proximity to our home. However we finally made it to the Carriage House and it blew us away. This is now our favorite restaurant in the area. The wine list is incredible and priced fairly, and the food is superb. Special shout-out to our server Phil who was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Quaint, upscale restaurant by the beach! Food is delicious and service is fantastic. They also accommodate gluten-free! Highly recommend...

Yelp
We came here for Restaurant Week. We have been talking about checking it out for a while. We could not have been happier with our decision!! They had a Restaurant Week menu, but also offered their regular menu as well. We started with cocktails. I had the Rye Tai and the lady had a Hot n Dirty martini. Both drinks were excellent!! The apps that we had from the RW menu were both very good, lamb stuffed pasta and a salmon app. Sorry, I can't remember what the exact names were. For the mains we had a fish dish and the Beef Bolognese; I know, pasta at a seafood restaurant!!???? BUT YES!!! I would put their Beef Bolognese against any Italian restaurant in Portsmouth. And the fish was delish!! for dessert we had the Lemon Cake and Cereal Panna Cotta. Both were excellent!! Our server, Shirley I believe, was on point!! She made great suggestions and was perfect with her timing. We look forward to coming back to enjoy more from their regular menu and gets some of the oysters we saw at the other tables!! Cheers!!!

Yelp
carriage house never disappoints. our waiter Dan was our server both nights and is the BEST! Highly recommend

Yelp
For years and years, the Carriage House on Rye Beach was a favourite of the local seacoast crowd. Renowned for its classy, quality feel and relaxed, mysterious ambience, the Carriage House remained the go-to restaurant for me and my family. With the retirement of its longtime owner, the Carriage House was saved by the owners of Louie's in Portsmouth. Comparing the new Carriage House to the old one, this early on, is a little unfair. Although it's definitely not the same as it used to be, it's still a fine eatery. I will admit that I was disappointed that the old Carriage House, with its rustic feel, delightful wait-staff and fine-tuned menu, couldn't survive forever. It's hard to see something that you loved for so long change, but, inevitably, the time had come. The new Carriage House is a different vibe altogether from its predecessor. The wood trim and pillars has been painted white to make the space feel more modern. The booths are gone, and small tables are in their place. The wait-station by the kitchen door has been turned into seating. A little paint here and there, along with some other updates, has helped rejuvenate the old building. The menu couldn't have been more different as well. Gone are favourites like the Island Lady, and in their place are more current offerings. However, perhaps because it's only brand new, there's no burger, pasta dish or other salad. The sole salad option was disappointing: heavily overdressed romaine lettuce with some diced radishes dropped around the sides. The herb dressing was applied so liberally that I had a hard time eating it. The rest of the meal showed a marked improvement. I ordered the sole steak option, which was okay, but small, and overly garnished. It tasted very good, however. For dessert I had the blueberry cobbler and a cappuccino. Both were delightful. However, the new Carriage House is more expensive than it used to be. My party of 3 was taken aback by the size of the bill. Not only that, but the restaurant seems more booze-centric than it used to be, but that's probably how they make most of their profit. Changing palates require changing restaurants, I guess. All in all, I'm sad to see the old Carriage House go, and I think a lot of Rye locals will say the same. The new one isn't comparable, not because it's necessarily worse, but because it doesn't even feel like the same place. I'd recommend giving it a try, but I can't say I like it as much as I used to.

Dulcet K.

Yelp
Very much enjoyed both my food and drink. I have been here twice. Consistent, service was excellent. Fish was fresh, cooked well and food overall was flavorful. However, they use too much butter. I love butter and creamy foods, but it's still important to get the balance right.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Lovely vibe, awesome owners, amazing food. You can visit the bar, upstairs dining or down stairs dining- all with a slightly different feel. Enjoy

Yelp
I was a frequent visitor under the previous owner and am pleased to say I will also be a frequent visitor under the new owners. I purposely made our reservations for a Friday so I could have my all time favorite- the haddock piccata. They changed the recipe a bit but it is still delicious. The rolls are a bit sweet for me but still good. You can't beat the views and there service from every staff member is exceptional! We can't wait to go back on a Thursday for prime rib and the oysters Rockefeller. Hoping they will highlight one of my other old time favs, the steak au poivre sometime. The new decor is also a nice refreshing change. Great job guys, wishing you the best success!! Back again tonight and couldn't be happier! I tried monkfish for the first time and it was an absolutely beautiful plate. Adam had the blue plate special of Prime rib and loved it. We also got the oysters Rockefeller but I was so excited to dig in we forgot to take a picture. Lemon tart dessert was the perfect way to end the meal and clean the pallet with a deliciously sour bite.

Yelp
The Carriage House looks like your grandparents' annual splurge anniversary dinner... it's old-fashioned, it's simple, the menu is full of classics and it's totally unassuming on the outside. The service is great and the ambiance is pleasant and quaint! More importantly, the food is something to rave about. They've got a variety of pasta dishes, elegant salads, and classic steak/chicken options (think NY Sirloin and Chicken Piccata). The specialty around this area is seafood, and they surely highlight that here! Catch me dipping jumpo shrimpies into cocktail sauce and slurping oysters for the first course... and then it's on to lobster, more shrimp, scallops and haddock for the main course. The lobster is always tender and rich, and the sauces make every dish decadent. Try the Island Lady- you'll keep coming back for it.

Jason S.

Yelp
Big disappointment. Went last night and the meat was full of gristle, small portion size and the decor is cheap. The desert was mediocre. Good service but for $150 meal we expected better. Won't be returning.
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
Looking for real estate in Rye and I stumbled across this place purely by chance, I'm glad I did. The staff is welcoming right when you enter the door and it carries throughout the meal. Mostly locals dining here when I first visited was off season. The meal I had was simple but delicious. Of course I had to try the fish chowder, which was lovingly enrobed with melted leeks. Very nice chowder. My entree was pork schnitzel, which was equally delicious but unexpected. I thought it would have European favors but it was more of a Szechuan sauce. I liked it! I'll defiantly be back and I'm delighted to know they're located to my new home in Rye.

Yelp
We were there on a Sunday night just before Christmas. Hadn't been there since the renovations and was pleased to see how nice things turned out. The food, the wine, the service were all spot on and excellent. The only thing that was a bit strange was the very cool lighting upstairs.. during these cold winter nights one seeks warmth and coziness. Though the temperature was fine we felt that the cool light took away from that cozy feel we which would've completed the experience for us.

Yelp
This is by far our favorite restaurant when in the area. Service, food, drinks and atmosphere all are superb. Always a very special evening and never disappoints. Kudos to RJ and his staff for attention to detail and for making our 23rd anniversary dinner a wonderful experience. Will be back on our next trip to NH.

Yelp
Service and dinner was AWESOME AND DELICIOUS! I can't wait to return and dine inside!! The Haddock piccata dinner was probably one of the best I've ever had and for him his Hanger Streak diner was Perry's darn delicious!!
