24 Hours of Asian Food in Richmond, B.C. | Eater Seattle

"Tucked away in a little sliver of a storefront in Pacific Plaza, I call ahead to reserve a box of Car’s Dessert mochi because the soft, chewy mochi sell out quickly; the mango mochi is studded with fruit pieces, the chestnut mochi has chunks in smooth chestnut paste, Hawaiian purple yam is a colorful option, and durian is for those who love intense aromas, plus there are various baked sago puddings and sago creams." - Jay Friedman

Google
I love cars desserts!! The durian mochi is the best thing I’ve ever tasted. So creamy and delicious. The mango mochi is excellent as well. It is the best during mango season but delicious either way! I also got this little pistachio cake that was really good when warmed in the oven. Fast efficient service. A must whenever I’m in Richmond.

The mango mochi was so good! First time having freshly made mochi. It’s just different from the frozen ones. I enjoyed the milk with papaya as well: the sweetness is subtle but right on. The coconut pudding was ok: I guess I was expecting a coconut jelly, but this one is more mushy.

Their mochi is so good! After dinner, I was feeling quite full, but I stumbled upon this desserts place while exploring the area. It's a cute little shop with Hong Kong signs adorning its walls. The decor is simple yet charming and inviting. I ordered their combo mochi, which includes two durian and two mango. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful, and the mochi was simply delicious. The price is quite reasonable, around $16 CAD after taxes. I highly recommend visiting this place; the staff is very helpful and friendly.

The baked sago pudding is SO good! They don't have dine-in, but they very kindly still warmed it up for me and gave me a spoon - I ended up going to Aberdeen Square across the street to eat it. The taro flavour is perfect.

We came check this place out after seeing a recommendation from a YouTube video. It lived up to the high expectation. Both desserts we ordered were not the most popular ones (the mochi ones), but more traditional Chinese one. You cannot dine in here, so be aware of that before you come. It is a small shop, so there is no tables/seatings/lots of rooms for you to wait for your order. The two parking spots right outside their place are relatively tight, and are often occupied. Despite of this inconvenience, we have come back a couple times in a short period of time already.

We got the mango mochi! It was pretty good and creamy! My baby loved the mangoes! There are no seatings inside tho. All togo!

Google
This place is as good as the hype! The mango mochi is amazing. With fresh cream and mango wrapped in soft chewy, the texture is perfect! A must try.

Google
Hands down the best Mochi ever in the area. The Mochi skin is so soft and chewy at the same time. As for the mango filling, it is not too much and perfectly matched with the cream inside. Do note that if go during the weekend they will be selling the Mochi in a combo set instead of per piece. We only got the mango one as we are not a fan of durian

Yelp
Car's Dessert is a hidden gem for mochi lovers! This small takeout shop delivers big on quality and care. We tried the combo pack with Durian, Purple Yam, Chestnut, and Mango, and every bite was delightful. The mochi wrapping is impressively thin, with a pillowy texture that makes each piece melt in your mouth. While I usually gravitate toward durian, the Chestnut and Purple Yam stole the show. You can really taste the effort and pride in the chestnut puree--it's smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. The staff are warm, friendly, and clearly proud of their craft, which adds to the charm of the experience. This is absolutely one of those places worth lining up for. If you're in the mood for artisanal mochi that's made with care, Car's Dessert should be at the top of your list.

Yelp
Came here to try their famous mochis and they did not disappoint. The skin was super thin and had the perfect chewy texture. I got the mango and the chestnut and liked the mango more because it was less heavy. Also got their black sesame sago pie and that was delectable as well. I really appreciated the friendly server who took his time to explain to us the preparation instructions and ideal storage conditions for the mochis and the sago pie. It's recommended to reheat the pie in an oven but, since we're tourists and didn't have easy access to an oven, we had to make do with a microwave and the end result was good as well. Mochis are recommended to be eaten within hours after purchase. Loved the HK-ness of this place. Communication done completely in Cantonese with awesome Cantopop songs playing in the background and Cantonese words and phrases posted all over the walls. LOVE!!

Yelp
Tucked away in a tiny shop in Richmond, Car's Dessert is home to probably the best dessert I have ever had. They serve a variety of mochi and other desserts, but not just typical mochi. This was the freshest mochi ever, and the fresh fruit and cream inside was simply phenomenal. The cashier was patient as we deliberated over what to order. They're cash-preferred!

Yelp
$$ CASH ONLY $$ Visiting Vancouver and asked some friends what are their recommendations in the Richmond area. Car's Dessert came highly recommended for its Mango Mochi. There are limited parking in its plaza, but I was able to find a spot fairly quickly. It is a cute store for To-Go only. No dine-in option available. The line was also relatively short when it opened in the morning and I was able to get my hands on my Mango Mochi. I would highly recommend eating the Mango Mochi as soon as possible as its skin is thin and soft. Make sure you keep them refrigerated if you are not planning to consume them immediately. Any reason that I loved their Mango Mochi is that it is made with real mangos. Not sure how their other desserts are, but everything looked good. Slightly pricey, but it is worth paying a little and treating yourself from time to time.

Yelp
The mochi are absolutely delicious, with a wonderfully thin skin; among all the flavors, durian and chestnut stand out as my personal favorites.

Yelp
TLDR: Mango Mochi. Black Sesame Pot pie? I like restaurants (or bakeries or dessert shops) which have a limited menu. In general, that means more care is taken to make SURE the food tastes excellent! This place is very small, on the corner of the strip mall. It has a small lineup of puddings, mochi, and dessert pies. Their mochi are SO DELICIOUS! I had a mango mochi, and I was expecting a mochi with some kinda mango filling. But no, the filling is actually Mango FRUIT in there! That was so unexpected and instantly it's the best mango mochi I've ever had. On top of that, the mochi skin is thin, stretchy, and yet strong enough not to leak. It's PERFECTLY made. I also got a black sesame pie. Even though I bought it a couple days earlier, when I bit into it, it was STILL EXCELLENT. The crust is flaky... reminds me a little bit of the flakiness from a boloh bao. And there is tapioca and black sesame inside. It was SO GOOD! The puddings are ok. They aren't bad either, but they aren't as extraordinary as either the pie or mochi. The mochi is THE BEST I've ever had (even better than ones I got in Japan!), and the Black Sesame pie is worth the flight alone. This place is EASILY 5 stars. When I travel back to Vancouver, this is definitely a must-visit!

Yelp
This is truly the 'go-to' gold star standard for Cantonese cold desserts, and for their limited amount of selection, it is still justified how good it is. I remember not to long ago when I use to visit this place in the Pacific Plaza food court on the second floor, a little food court stall in the corner, and now they have an actual store front right behind Aberdeen skytrain. I love the care and quality of all their products, which include their freshly made mochi... yes.. freshly made, like made to order, whether you want durian, mango, chestnut, or ube.... when you order, that is when it is made, and this place makes the best in the city... I've made some family members think twice at dim sum when they are in Richmond and would forgo ordering it there, and drive over here to fill their dessert void.... While you are waiting for your order you can read the history of the man behind the desserts, and also the reason for the name of the shop, it is quite nice. Also there is another menu, and that is written in Chinese near the cashier, these are the specials that are usually seasonal, and are worth a try, but if your are a traditionalist... stick with their mochi's, mango pomelo sago cold soup desserts, and also their baked pies. Since now they are in a plaza right behind the skytrain, there are a few parking stalls, just be warned this plaza can get a little tight, and don't be shocked if you show up past 5pm and they have a sign saying their mochi is sold out.... cause it can be sold out. I look forward to go again to get their newer products, like the black sesame rolls which are done very well!

Yelp
As I was going through the list of places on Yelp, car's dessert caught my eyes. It's located in a small plaza with a few parking spots. I came in the afternoon and luckily they still have the combo mochi. There's 4 flavors: durian, mango, chestnut, ube. I think the durian one definitely stood out. The flavor is quite strong. The mochi is very thin yet soft. I'm not sure how they did it but there's a good amount of filling inside. The service is quick since everything is premade, there's a small wait but mostly waiting for others to pay or decide what to get. Now I know where I'll go to stop by for dessert if I'm ever in the area again

Yelp
The shop was very busy but the staff was very efficient. We lined up for less than 10 minutes with around 10 people in front of us. The place is a takeaway only shop, but still very well decorated. The owner was passionate with their products, and would love every customer to have the best experience with their desserts. She taught us how to store the desserts if we were not consuming them immediately. We tried their durian mochi and mango pomelo sago cream. The filling of the mochi is durian blended with cream, and is very rich, creamy and smooth. The mochi skin is of the right consistency - chewy yet soft. The mango pomelo sago cream was tasty too! With quite some mango chunks.

Yelp
love the durian mochi! wish the mango one didn't have cream in it, but that's personal preference. nice, not-too-sweet treat and great for a party. would not recommend eating two before dinner haha. came on a thursday afternoon and thankfully they still had some available. need to try their baked tapioca pudding next time.

Yelp
Their Award winning mochi is a must try! I will want to come back whenever I have a chance

Yelp
Amazing mango mochi at a reasonable price! Definitely come close to opening if you want to guarantee they have what you want, they have people lining up before they open.
google avatar

Stephy L.

Yelp
Got recommendation to come, got a variety/sample pack of mochis. They were tasty but a little bit too soft for me. Parking is also awful but luckily it was not super busy when we went.
google avatar

Sabrina C.

Yelp
How can it be so good, genuinely. The durian was so creamy and fresh and delicious, I'm a little confused. The mango was also so sweet and juicy; how come I can't find these mangoes? Where are they buying their ingredients? It's so delicious! I'll be back. Maybe tonight, if I can make it. Probably tomorrow. Service was good, clean place. See you soon! *under $20 is cash only*

Yelp
Located in Pacific Plaza and tucked away in the corner of the food court is Car's Dessert! They're mainly known for their mochi, but I was very intrigued with their baked sago, as not many places sell it. Unfortunately it was all sold out by the time I got there (~4:30pm), so I settled for their box combo of 1 each of their signature mochi. I really enjoyed the mango and durian. Mango was sweet enough and the cream definitely added to it as well. The durian was super creamy, fragrant, and filled to the brim. If you like durian, you'll love this mochi! Purple yam and chestnut were good, but nothing special. I found that the purple yam was too heavy on the stomach and quite hard to eat after a bit. Chestnut was creamy with a bit of texture for bite. The mochi skin was not as chewy or thin as I thought it could be, could have been better (but definitely still top-tier) if I am nitpicking. I would definitely go back for their baked sago! Not too expensive either. Remember to bring cash though as they are CASH ONLY.

Yelp
A decent spot in Richmond for mochi! I wanted to get the mango mochi at riceholic but of course they were already sold out and had no more walk in mochis available ... I was still craving mochi dessert so decided to stop by Car's Dessert. It's a few minutes walk away so I made my over quite quickly. It's upstairs in the food court and tucked away in the corner. I decided to get the two durian mochi and two mango mochi for $12.50. On the pricier side for its size. However it was still very satisfying. The mango mochi was just ok - was expecting more mango pieces and it was filled with cream as well. The durian mochi was my favorite - loved the creamy durian texture and flavor.
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
CASH ONLY! It's a small shop in the corner of a food court, but they have a variety of Hong Kong style desserts. I ordered the durian mochi, which was $14 for four pieces (Canada Day price). It was quite big and filled with creamy durian pulp. The mochi skin was thin and soft, and the durian flavor was strong and sweet. If you're a fan of durian, you'll love this dessert. If you're not, you might want to try their other flavors, like mango, purple yam or chestnut.

Yelp
This little GEM is hidden inside a strip mall near the food court and have the BESTT fresh mango mochi! Cash only and limited quantities so come early and be prepared! We were lucky enough to snag the very last box available of the fresh mochi. I spoke to the owner and advised that we were visiting from Seattle and had heard so much about their mochis and wanted to try. She said she was sold out initially, but then when she checked the back she said she had 1 preorder box that was never picked up and offered it to us! It was sooo good, it had 3 mango mochi's and 1 chestnut! We got so lucky and the owner was so kind! Love the variety, hope to be able to try the durian next time we visit. The mango was so fresh and the mochi was very soft! Definitely need to be refrigerated if you don't consume right away bc of the cream. Honestly, we ate these on our drive back to Seattle. They didnt stand chance! We are visiting again this weekend, so I'm hoping I can snag a box or 2 of my favorite mochis :) I would love to bring some back for my family if possible!

Yelp
$$$ CASH ONLY $$$ Cars dessert is a well known dessert spot in the Richmond area even though it's located in a food court of a low key strip mall where you wouldn't expect such a place. I think they are most known for their mochi and mango desserts. I went late in the afternoon and they were so sold out of most their stuff and so I only got to try the mango dessert. Definitely recommend going around when they open to try the best stuff. Food My group tried the black sesame baked tapioca, mango pudding, and another one I don't know the name for unfortunately. The mango pudding was my favorite of the 3 though and would recommend. The mango pudding was not very sweet actually and had a good mango flavor to it. All the desserts actually were not that sweet. The black sesame pie was interesting since I have not had a dessert like that before. Hopefully next time I can try the mochi and see what the hype is all about! Atmosphere The store is located inside the food court of a strip mall on the second floor. It can be a little challenging to find if it's your first time but make sure to locate the food court! Look towards the large window and there you will see Cars dessert. Casual and laid back atmosphere with people talking all around. Pricing Prices were reasonable and worth the price. Not too expensive for a dessert. Service The staff was helpful and nice. Food came out as soon as possible since the baked pie required heating (~15 minutes). Other

Yelp
When I took a bite of the mango mochi, I ascended into the heavens in a state of pure bliss. It was the best combination of fresh, sweet, juice from the mango and sticky, chewy mochi. The mochi itself was made from the gods. We got the mango mochi and the purple yam mochi and while the yam one is still great, the mango mochi is the better one by a far margin. We came around 2pm on a weekday and there was no line. The place is cash only and located in a plaza. Owners speak English. It is the type of place where you think about often once you leave for when you can come back next. This place is a must go!

Yelp
Soft and Silky Mochi Tucked away in the corner of Pacific Plaza food court is Car's Dessert They are known for their Chinese desserts like Baked Sago Pudding and Mochi Their mochi are made to order so it's super fresh The mochi: Mochi menu - 4 flavors with durian, fresh mango, purple yam, and chestnut filling The mochi wrapper (skin) is quite thin, stretchy and silky soft, which is different from Japanese mochi. I got the Mochi filled with Durian and filled with fresh mango. Both were so tasty and soft like clouds in my mouth. Each piece is not really for sharing Menu: I placed an order for 2 boxes of mochi and the wait was around 20min. Pricing: (per piece) Durian Mochi - 3.25 Fresh Mango with cream - 2.75 Purple Yam - 2.75 Chestnut: 2.75 On the weekends, they only offer mochi in boxes of 4. Their 'weekend' menu is in Chinese so it's tough for those who can't read Chinese $12 for box of 4 pieces of Durian mochi, $11 for Fresh mango mochi Protip: They don't pick up calls so just head there to place your order Please don't eat this the next day, the mochi skin will not be smooth and soft I would definitely make another trip here to try the baked sago pudding and other flavors of mochi
google avatar

Novani M.

Yelp
The mochis were so good, I got the combo to try everything. My fav was the mango. The skin was so soft. The down side is that I won't be able to take it to Seattle due to the fresh fruit inside..:(
google avatar

Ivy L.

Yelp
DON'T HESITATE, GO TRY IT NOW! (and don't forget to bring cash) Got to try the four types of mochi and they were all delish! The mochi skin was so soft and sticky. There's just enough cream to melt all the flavors together but not so much that it overpowers everything else. None of them were sweet which I love. The purple yam and chestnut ones were good and worth a try, but I'd probably only get the mango and durian ones in the future. My favorite is definitely the durian one; it is FILLED with fruit and is the perfect texture balance. There was a huge line when we went but it was definitely worth the wait. Items are reasonably priced. Can't wait to go back and try their other desserts!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
We came on a Sunday around 1pm. There were a couple of people in line but we got ours pretty fast. We got 2 mango mochis, a taro mochi and a purple sweet potato mochi. The best mochis were the purple sweet potato and taro mochi. They had a lot of flavour where as the mango tasted kind of faint. The mochis are really soft and not overly sweet. We also had the milk pudding. This was disappointing as it wasn't as smooth as I was anticipating. Good thing was that it wasn't overly sweet. We also had the baked sago (lava flavour) which was somewhat disappointing. The top was really crispy which I liked but the inside was overly watery and could have done with more egg yolk flavour. It just tasted like regular baked sago. Overall I would recommend getting the purple sweet potato mochi and the taro mochi. The prices are definitely on the higher side but worth trying once. The lady taking orders is super nice and patient. She explains everything nicely

Yelp
CASH ONLY! Definitely a hidden gem. I found it on Google map and decided to try it. A little hard to find, because it's in the corner of the food court and the food court resides in a doctor office- alike plaza. If I was busy or had plan that day, I would have skipped it since it was hard to locate. We ordered two durian mochis, 1 mango and 1 chestnut. We both love durian's so much! It was probably 80-85% of durian and just 15-20% cream. The mochi skin is soft and thin. The mango one was also full of mango chunk but just a bit sour ( this depends on the day and what mango they use, so I guess I happened to try the sour one). I will come back again!
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Please note: CASH ONLY, so be prepared. Second note: this place is on the 2nd floor of the plaza But what a gem of a mochi place! Tucked in the back of the small food court, it's really hard to miss the line. Fortunately, the line goes by pretty quickly. My wife and I were unprepared and only had about $7 to spend. We got the 1 purple yam mochi and 1 mango mochi. The purple yam was ok. Nothing spectacular. But the mango mochi was a show stopper. Holy cow, it was small but delicious. They use actual chunks of mango inside the mochi, and it was so good. My wife and I wish we had more cash on us to buy more. So why the 4-star? Well, we need to come back! There were sagos and other desserts we wanted to try, but couldn't. So make sure to not be dumb (like us) and get some cash in hand!

Aggie C.

Yelp
Amazing mochi. Finally some nice mango in Canada. 100% recommend! No wonder it's awarded!

Yelp
Mango & Durian Mochi ($12.50) ~ Carrs dessert in pacific plaza is super lined up, we went at 2:45pm and they opened at 2:30pm and lets just say we lined up for over 30 mins. Verdict: good but overhyped. Don't get me wrong it was yummy and delicious the durian had loads of durian in it and it was good the skin of the mochi was spot on, but the mango was lacking, not enough mango in the mochi, and it was more cream to mango ratio. Durian 8/10 , and Mango: 6.5/10. Good but wouldn't line up for it.
google avatar

Chantel H.

Yelp
A little hard for me to find but this place is a gem! Exactly what you want in a fresh mochi! I wish I would have gotten more of the mango! Sooo tasty and fresh!
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Freaking delicious. Already craving these back in California. Only less one star for the process of buying. 2nd floor in a random food court, long line, odd hours, etc.
google avatar

Liza L.

Yelp
Hidden place, a bit hard to find but they have the best mochi!! Will definitely go back
google avatar

Gordon Y.

Yelp
A friend pre-ordered a bunch of mochi from this hole-in-the-wall. The mango and durian flavors were both excellent. More importantly, the mochi dough was super thin and stretchy without breaking. Fantastic texture! These little treats were truly amazing!
google avatar

Ly W.

Yelp
I arrived right when they opened on a weekend afternoon to a short line up. They don't accept pre-orders on weekends and the only way to pre-order is to join their Facebook group and leave a comment, which I find a little inconvenient. I ordered 2 durian + 2 mango mochis (around $12). I was slightly confused by their menu. They have a menu with individual mochi prices, but I was informed they only sell the mochis in sets/combinations. I didn't try the durian mochi, but the mango mochi was filled with cream and mango chunks. While the mochi skin was soft and pillowy, I found it a little thick and the mango wasn't very sweet. I would be interested in trying their other menu options. I think this would be a good and safe dessert to bring for a dinner at a friend's or if you are in charge of dessert duties for a party!
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Hidden gem alert!!! If you are a mochi fan, you will definitely love this place. I got all four flavors, and let me tell you... get the MANGO one!!! That one is a solid 4.5 stars... the other ones were subpar (can't say about the Durian one because I didn't try it haha can't handle the taste or smell). If you are ever in the area, definitely come by and pick up a few! Just know that it is a bit pricey at about $3 a pop! But wow is the mango one good... super chewy and sweet chunks of mango :)
google avatar

S C.

Yelp
The Mango Sago Pomelo Cream was not sweet at all; it was diluted with water so you could not really taste the cream. The Durian Baked Sago Pudding was tasteless - you could not taste the durian and the sago pudding was sago in a mango pudding that was diluted with water as well. It was not the authentic one in dim sum restaurants where the sago was mixed with custard. The tofu in the Tofu Pudding was good, but the sugar syrup was not sweet at all even though it looked dark brown. So why was it brown? Only the mochi was good - the durian, chestnut, and purple yam were strong flavoured. But they merely put two chunks of mango for the mango mochi with minimal cream (it did not look like the pictures here) . It looked like they tried to save labour. Also, the mochi skin was chewy. We were shocked with the inferior quality of desserts. The good reviews were probably written by their relatives and friends. P.S. When we asked for utensils, the woman there hesitated and she only gave us one spoon and one fork while we bought so much. Moreover, she told us that we needed to eat the mochi asap but the other food could wait. It did not make sense because usually the wet food (e.g. tofu pudding, mango sago pomelo cream) cannot wait while the dry food (e.g. mochi) can wait.

Yelp
This dessert place is a hidden gem in Richmond! They serve asian desserts like mochi, mango pomelo sago etc! Their mochi sells fast if you don't pre-order! Their mochi is so soft and chewy!

Annie L.

Yelp
Truly a hidden gem. I had 2 durians, shared the mango, purple yam and chestnut mochi. The durian mochi was my favorite. The mochi was thin and the filling was legit. It's not filled with 90% cream like most places. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Lynda T.

Yelp
Mango pudding and mango mochi absolutely amazing! Always busy. You must go early or it will sell out.
google avatar

Chloe C.

Yelp
My family loves the mochi (mango and durian). I tried the sago pudding and it was decent but nothing amazing. I don't think the chestnut works well both texture and flavour wise. I found it a little too sweet but that's just my preference.

Krahs O.

Yelp
they open at 230pm service : friendly and accommodating food: mango mochi definitely sweeter than the bigger mochi from the other food court and the mochi itself is gooey~er and its reasonable ambiance: odlin food court needs a renovation and cleanup the mango mochi YUM!! The taro sago whether eaten as cold or heated up so good! not so sweet!

Stephie T.

Yelp
Mango and chestnut mochi were perfectly soft and chewy with lots of filling and not too much cream. Recommend!
