The Best Restaurants in Palm Springs, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"One of the first stops off the main 111 Highway into Palm Springs is Cartel Roasting Co. Pull over to the right side of the street at the Arrive hotel (or on your way out) to sip a latte from this Arizona-based chain. Cartel roasts some of the best beans in the Coachella Valley and takes great care when preparing cold brew lemonade, espresso tonics, and strong cappuccinos. Street parking is always plentiful, so one can stay for a while or grab something caffeinated for the road." - Mona Holmes

Found Cartel Roasting while spending a weekend in Palm Springs and I’m super glad I did! It’s a very cool building, with a small-but-comfortable interior and a small patio. The staff are very nice and helpful, and the coffee is great! I tried both cold brews, as well as the dirty chai, and everything was very high quality and delicious. Good vibes, good coffee, and a good aesthetic—Cartel Roasting is worth a visit.

Having tried the Cartel coffee locations in Tucson, AZ, I was extremely excited to find out that there is one in Palm Springs given that their coffee is amazingly excellent. We decided to give them a shot. I tried the pomegranate ginger tonic. Oh my goodness; that drink was amazing!! It has the amazing flavor of their espresso, great ginger hit and the great flavor of pomegranate. The drink blew past all my expectations. I have been back multiple times since and have taken multiple friends and family members to try the drinks. The baristas are also very kind and helpful, always, which we always appreciate. Everyone needs to try Cartel Roasting Co. If you enjoy a good cup of coffee, you should try this location!!!!

I had an unfortunate spill early on in my drink and they came in handy with cleaning up the spill and even remaking my drink. Outstanding and friendly service. Would come again. Seems like regulars come and have a good relationship with workers.

Such a cute coffee shop with great selection of drinks! The staff was super friendly and loved chatting with them. I LOVED the CCL and the pomegranate ginger tonic ❤️ Definitely worth the walk if you’re staying more downtown

Google
Hands down the best specialty coffee in Palm Springs. Nice roasting definitely gives this place an edge over other coffee shops. A double shot here is slightly short yielding under 30g, and priced at 4.1$ - 3.6 if you bring your own container. The espresso blend is fruity, sweet, light-medium with a little natural funk sometimes. I got a tasty shot 3 out 6 times which probably depends on the barista. Pour overs showcase the origins pretty well, but tend to get a little thin and light on acidity. One of the more cohesive roaster-run shops I've visited, somewhat reminiscent of Dune.

Google
Good coffee quality and taste! Had the mocha, good. Wife had a oatmeal iced latte, good. Robust and not watered down taste like most big franchises. Hope to visit again.

I own a coffee shop and this place has NAILED it. Every time I am in town I have to come here at least once a day usually twice. The grapefruit espresso tonic is to die for and the service is always friendly, authentically warm, and always makes my day.

I don’t know or my standards don’t match the expectations or we forgot what is customer service is ! I wanted to stop by this place for so long . And here we are finally I was so excited. I was looking forward for some awesome coffee or chai- with pastry on side . We arrived around 11ish. It had few people in shop . And I am like yes . I made it ! And the gal that was in shop was on phone and I needed to wait for her to pay attention that we got into shop. And I ask what kind of substitute milk they had . The gal kinda roll eyes on me and with ahhh we have oat milk and almond milk. I am ok non of them my favorite. I order Americano and my wife order chai tea with almond milk The gal took her sweet time to make this two drinks . After like more then enough time I ask her to rush up . And also told her just a suggestion- fyi maybe suggest to owner to buy coconut milk . Because lots of people have nuts allergies and also oat milk has aftertaste. She like yes more then few customers told me that. And I ask her so did you ask/ suggested to the owner- she is no . Why ?! And I like because you work here and if more then few people tell you this , it is should get to your management team and also coconut milk shelf life are long so I don’t see a problem in that . She just like naaa shrug her shoulders . I told her how excited I was and wanted to come to this coffee shop but - you lost me and my business. One service of two drinks with out customers ahead of me took almost 15+ minutes and she don’t give a damn about customer. So I am not coming back. It is plenty places in PS downtown to spend my time and my money even so I love to support small businesses. Sorry, not sorry. Hire somebody who want to work and have passion for customer service and enthusiastic for what they do even in the coffee shop.

Yelp
Cartel Roasting Co; what a cute lil' independent-owned coffee spot! I stopped by here twice whilst at a conference and was DELIGHTED with the beverages I got both times! Over the course of my visits, I ordered a simple vanilla latte with oat milk as well as an iced matcha with oat milk and a dash of cinnamon (you've GOTTA try this combination - it is SOOO GOOD!). Both of these drinks were absolutely delicious and a great way to start my day. I've gotta shout out the staff here; they're so kind, welcoming, and their service is great! I also liked how they sold a variety of beans and t-shirts for folks to take home. Overall, I recommend this spot to folks looking for a quick cuppa tasty jitter juice or tea!

Yelp
Cool little spot, good coffee. It's a small coffe shop, so don't expect much, but they do have seating inside and outside. Service is friendly. #ViBN @kaliking806 (IG)

Yelp
Very quick service & a delicious cortado! However, $5.20 for a cortado is quite expensive, and this is coming from someone who frequents coffee shops everywhere I go. They have a variety of espresso drinks, teas, and some experimental drinks also. They sold beans (even decaf) you can take home if you'd like too. Street parking, relatively easy to get to.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in Palm Springs with an amazing aesthetic and quality coffee. Very expensive coffee and food, but worth it. I appreciated the vegan options they had available. I had an americano that was incredible and found service to be friendly and helpful. They have indoor and outdoor seating and AC! Great place to grab coffee and sit and hang out.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing experience with the most beautiful crew! Went the whole weekend while I was in town for Coachella and I cannot wait to return. The cafe was relaxing and welcoming and the coffee was absolutely divine!

Yelp
After searching a few spots in Palm Springs for a coffee shop, I am so glad that I stumbled across this one! The single origin cold brew (columbia beans that day) was so smooth and very easy to drink, not too acidic at all. The latte with oat was so good, I wish I bought some beans because of it! The breakfast burrito was solid, but nothing too spectacular. Brownie points for toasting both sides of the burrito though - gave it good light brunch on the tortilla. Parking can be hard, it's all street. Lots of seating inside with outlets. A+ playlist playing when I was there as well.

Yelp
I used to work in specialty coffee for well over a decade, and I'm a picky baby when it comes to my coffee and my baristas. It's a small shop, and we came on a busy day. The line was wrapped to the back of the store and to the door. As a business, you can't help if you're busy. But what you can do is manage the crowd properly, which they did. The line to order did take a while. Maybe 20 minutes. But the banter at the register was friendly, helpful, and made any of my undercaffeinated fussiness melt away. Normally, when the line to order is this long, the drinks take equally as long to come up. But no! Less than five minutes after ordering and our drinks were ready to go. This is the way. There's nothing worse than a quick line to order and a long-ass wait for your coffee once you already paid. I was super impressed. And the coffee itself? Divine. The single origin cold brew was ideal and perfectly crafted. And our lattes came with perfectly steamed milk and balanced, flavorful espresso. Well. Freaking. Done.

Yelp
Teeny tiny place but actually had a good amount of seating. Iced vanilla latte was good, but didn't taste super strong or memorable. Cool location! The line was long but moved quickly.

Yelp
With a name like Cartel Coffee, I expected something bold, rooted, maybe even reflective. Instead, the coffee was forgettable, the decor was bland, and the vibe was stripped of any cultural depth. Using a loaded term like "cartel" without engaging its racial, geopolitical, and cultural weight feels like a branding choice made in an attempt appropriate the usage of a term not owned. If you're just looking for a neutral space and average coffee, this place might work. But if you're hoping for something that honors the complexity behind its name, keep walking.

Yelp
Every time I'm at the Phoenix airport, I go to Cartel for coffee. So when I saw that they were at the hotel we were staying at, Arrive, I had to go! Cartel didn't disappoint. Highly competent and friendly baristas, and a variety of high quality beans from around the world to choose from. I enjoyed the cappuccino- perfectly balanced without a ton of foam, and the ginger turmeric latte. Perfect. My hubby stuck to the Americano and enjoyed it. They also have a variety of teas, and a matcha latte. They have baked goods and a few b'fast times, like a bfast burrito. Hubby had the blueberry muffin and said it was delicious. More like a scone than a muffin. However, for sweet, syrup flavored drink coffee lovers, they don't advertise many flavor options. Just vanilla, agave, and mocha flavors. After studying the menu I saw a lavender matcha, so they must have lavender on hand. Also a dehydrated citrus for a tonic drink. No bathroom. It's attached to a hotel, so I suppose you could get access to a bathroom if you ask. ‍ I'm staying at the hotel. Outdoor patio for cooler months. Still, it's a great spot to chill, people watch, and enjoy a high quality roast.

Yelp
I don't know If it's just me, but it was hard to find coffee places not chain and more coffee roasters in palm springs. . I came here because this is the only one that caught my attention to be ok. It was great ice drip coffee or cold brew. I forgot which drink it was but it satisfy my coffee craving. . The space inside has thus high up sofa booth. It was kind of different. Not too comfy for long seating if your not tall. . I like that they have a long dining table in the middle of the room for large groups. . I like that there was plenty of street parking. The inside was cool with ac on a hot summer day. I enjoyed the experience with a great easy order and go. . The next door is a fancy boutique hotel where the restroom is, if you were looking for a bathroom. . Overall I like the the coffee here. I don't really like lattes and etc, just a good old ice drop, cold brew, or ice amaericano. Hope this review helps. Thanks for reading. Have a yelptastic day. Follow me for more.

Yelp
Not too many changes at the coffee market in a desert. Cartel still leading the market. Good cup of cappuccino. Balanced, smooth and delicious.

Yelp
Walked right in to a busy coffee shop. No line, people just hanging out enjoying Sunday morning. Ordered a dirty chai and it was so tasty. It felt vibrant inside with all the people.
google avatar

Yelp
Cartel Roasting is my #1 in the entire Coachella Valley for your matcha latte needs for this upcoming festival season. I've tried many others in all the desert cities and Cartel Roasting always stands out above the rest Have a Happy Festival Peeps !

Yelp
Dropped in to purchase two bags of coffee for the BF as I was on a day trip with the family. Place itself looked really modern and cozy, and the staff was super nice and friendly. Ended up with a dark and medium roast, and it was cool of the staff to offer suggestions. Plus, a free cold brew or drip was offered, so that was a bonus surprise. I don't normally drink coffee, but I'll be sure to check them out for iced tea the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
I usually like to stop by small coffee shops to discover and support them. However, there was no acknowledgment of our presence when we entered this one. I wanted to leave, but decided to see if the coffee might be worth it. After ordering the CCL coffee, we left immediately. I only took one sip in the car and threw away the rest; it was too sweet and had a slimy texture. It felt like a complete waste of my $8. On the other hand, the cappuccino was good, and the mocha flavor was rich. The place was empty on a Sunday morning, quiet ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
A quality coffee with a chill vibe near downtown Palm Springs. They have indoor and outdoor seating with both high top and low tables. A chess board, lots of plugs and plenty of people watching will give you something to do while you sit and sip. The letter-board always has a fun quote. Today's said "should I get my life together or should I just get a coffee and keep being sexy and chaotic?"
google avatar

Yelp
This small but charming coffee spot is my new favorite cafe in Palm Springs. Everything from the aesthetic to the customer service to the organic ingredients makes Cartel Roasting Co the place to be. Looking forward to stopping in more often when I'm here and saying hi to my new favorite baristas!
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee! I'd return when passing by. Their coffee (americano) was super smooth and strong like it! Also go flavored obleas, which was the first time I had seen that! Service was good, and ambience was nice given its boogie location.

Yelp
So glad to find a Cartel Roasting while in Palm Springs! When I am in Phoenix I love stopping by to grab a cup of coffee thanks to my girlfriend! So seeing it here was definitely a treat! It definitely was a crowd pleasure too given the massive long line so early in the morning. The shop is a little small but they do offer outdoor seating as well. As always, they offer a nice variety of things to choose from off their menu. I got an iced dirty chai and it was really good. I always enjoy going into a coffee shop and smelling the fresh coffee beans fill the air. Music was nice and pleasant. What a great way to start the day.

Yelp
Decided to try a new coffee shop this morning. Love that they have outside seating! The inside is a little small so keep that in mind if you are coming with a big group. I ordered an iced matcha latte with almond milk and sweetener. I did enjoy my drink however I wish it was a little sweeter. Will be coming back to try out the coffee next time! The service was great all smiles and very welcoming.
google avatar

Mecca B.

Yelp
Worth the stop! It's a small coffee shop, but they're seating inside and seating outside. I came here at 7:30 in the morning and grabbed a vegan burrito along with the CCL and sat on the patio with no one else around and just enjoyed the weather. Service was pretty quick as well!if you're looking for a spot that isn't in the busyness of downtown, come here!

April R.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, friendly staff! They have a variety of pastries and drinks. Plenty of seating inside and out. Way better than chain coffee! Drink local coffee!

Yelp
Pretty good tea , I forgot to add cinnamon. Not a spicy chai Very nice looking place The service is fast

Yelp
Didn't hate it or love it - super neutral experience. Offering hipster energy and solid customer service, I can see why this place is a draw especially for the neighboring hotel. Contrary, the tight interior and patio facing the noisy street were turn offs for me. I also ordered my latte on a whim and selected agave syrup which was alright. Next time, I will opt for a more familiar flavor. Inside you will find a very large table to work remotely on, a chess board and a few other single tables. There is also a small selection of merchandise for sale such as coffee tumblers, t-shirts and mugs on the interior. Note: Lattes come with 4 shots of espresso so get ready for a jolt of energy. Per your request, they can make it with two shots. Blast off, folks!

Yelp
The coffee is great I've gotten the CCL special latte a couple times it's so good. The food however was horrible. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I got the carne asada burrito. It was so bad I took a bite and threw it away. It was just beans and hard chewy meat couldn't taste anything else. I knew it was pre made but i didn't think it would be so bad especially for what I paid. I also got the almond croissant which was amazing it tasted a lot like a bear claw it has a filling as well. As for the service it has been pretty standard so far! for the ambience I can definitely sit here with my laptop for a bit if i needed a spot to study but it's small so keep that in mind as well!
google avatar

Verna C.

Yelp
We needed to find a coffee spot other than Starbucks and Cartel Roasting did not disappoint. We stuck with the Cold Brew and our kids ordered tea. The service was fast and easy with some suggestions on what to order. The location was easy to find and parking was right on the street on a weekend. There are places to sit and relax. There were people studying so I'd assume it's a great place to just sit and enjoy.

Rica A.

Yelp
Even though the space is small, the drinks are amazing, I was iffy about this because of the past experiences I've had at other places here in the valley but they really blew me away. I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cute and convenient coffee shop located in Palms. 5min from our airbnb, quite small but has so much character! I loved the mini knick knacks around the shop. Friendly service! Got a iced vanilla latte and it did the job. Would come back!

Yelp
Small spot in downtown Palm Springs with great espresso / caffeinated drinks (I am a micro-foam fanatic) and yummy bites. Long line on a Saturday morning. Tried a Cappucino with oat milk ($5). Beautiful latte art, though the espresso had a bitter tang. The vegan breakfast burrito ($14) was also solid (not too heavy) though a bit overpriced, and the almond croissant ($5.50) was wonderfully flakey (from Townie's).
google avatar

Jenny C.

Yelp
I am always supportive of independent coffeehouses and was looking forward to trying Cartel. The name itself and their own branded cold brew is intriguing, as well. Unfortunately, the dirty chai latte with oat milk ($7) was a tad disappointing. The espresso was weak (cannot taste any coffee) and oat milk was not steamed so my "hot" dirty chai was lukewarm. It didn't help that the drink was way too sweet. The regular latte was okay....not comparable to Koffi.
google avatar

Delilah S.

Yelp
i loveee the CCL! cartel is a staple in my routine whenever i visit arizona. it is such a delicious, reliable coffee spot. it is always busy and consistently pumps out good brews! i was so happy to find out they have a location in california because, now, anytime i'm driving thru palm springs i can happily order my iced latte. overall, highly recommend! my coffee snob boyfriend is a fan and my coffee loving mother was obsessed when we had her try it. the locations are trendy, clean, and tend to have really nice baristas that get your drinks out fast!
google avatar

Wendy W.

Yelp
The staff are always friendly. Coffee is good. I do wish they had more food options and pastries, but otherwise, it's a solid place for coffee.
google avatar

Yuanhong Z.

Yelp
Visited the coffee shop during a weekend trip to Palm Spring. Really good coffee and nice staff. I got a decaf americano with cashew milk and my friend got an ice latte (which comes with 4 shots!!! The staff asked to confirm if we wanted to adjust) Good option!
google avatar

Bea F.

Yelp
Maybe it's not best to get matcha from a coffee shop. Tasted purely like milk. Color was very faint for a matcha. $7 drink. I am sure I would have enjoyed a latte more. Other than that, the atmosphere was nice. Drink was made quickly. Went home and added my own syrup in attempt to make it not taste like plain milk :/
google avatar

Vicki G.

Yelp
The best latte I've had since visiting Spain. Excellent service as well. The staff were friendly and accommodating.
google avatar

Ohtli I.

Yelp
I went in for a carne asada breakfast burrito and coffee. The service was okay. The environment was run down. Most importantly, the burrito was ATROCIOUS. The coffee was lack luster. When I asked the server why there was no carne asada in the burrito he recommended I go to the restaurant next door for food.
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
I ordered a vanilla latte and it was one of my favorites. I usually try to make it less sweet and they made it perfectly.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee spots in the desert! Evelyn is so sweet and very attentive. The ambiance there is perfect to get work done as well. Try the tonic lemonade.

Yelp
Make good things. Make things good. Those words are the very essence of this coffee shop. Cartel Roasting is a small corner coffee shop on W. Vista Chino and the 111 fwy in downtown Palm Springs. They have other locations throughout AZ, CA and TX. CR cafe offer a modest list of coffee and tea drinks, pastry and merch. I ordered a Cold Brew; it was smooth, sweet and mellow. I liked it especially when the weather is warm. It makes you feel more focused and energized. Staff were amiable, cordial and professional. Service was on point. Indoor and outdoor seats were very spacious; atmosphere was very relaxing as you sip your drinks while listening to their lounge music. Prices were reasonable and competitive. Max capacity is 49. Free wifi. Street parking was easy. Overall, I had a good experience and cold brew. I recommend this coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
came at 7.45am and they were already out of pumpkin spice so we got cinnamon spiced matcha and caramel coffee latte. both drinks had a pretty strong espresso/matcha base but they were too sweet for me
google avatar

Angelina O.

Yelp
Husband loved this new spot. Have visited a few times now. I like that there are other yummy options as I am leaning away from coffee. Must try!
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
My husband and i found this place a few days ago (we are visiting from Oregon), and it blows the other coffee roasters here out of the water! The coffee and espresso are amazing, but their single origin cold brew is one of the best we've ever tasted. Definitely go here if you love great third wave coffee!
google avatar

Drake L.

Yelp
My wife and I got two lattes and they were very good and STRONG, just as we like it! Small shop but they move customers pretty quickly. Workers are also very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
The honey lavender matcha was so refreshing in this desert heat and the coffee shop itself is a great place to cool down! Indoor and outdoor seating available, parked on the street (idk if they have their own parking?). Overall great quality drinks and space to chill or get work done!
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
A small intimate chic coffee shop experience. It looks like a great little place. That being said, I don't know if I'd come back based on service, coffee, and pastry. The baristas didn't give morning people vibes at all. My Americano looked like a flat soda(no light foam finish and very light) and the cup was only a smidge over half full. The pastries were fine but the croissant was definitely over baked(great flavor tho) I really try to only give 5 star reviews with maybe a note or two but when the prices are like this and tips are expected these days I just couldn't do it
google avatar

L.A. N.

Yelp
Found my GO TO spot for an ice cold brew with cinnamon! ---Sonoran Sun Cold Brew, brewed in sunny Tempe, Arizona for 22 hours for the perfect balance of strong and smooth chocolatey goodness. Easy street parking and you can order online for pick up too!
google avatar

Tammie W.

Yelp
Cartel never disappoints no matter if we're visiting the Palm Springs location or one of their multiple AZ locations. The hubby and I usually hit this one up on the way in and on the way out of Palm Springs and always grab a bag of two of their beans. During this visit, I ordered the CCL because I was craving something cold, creamy and sweet. If you like the samoas cookies from the Girl Scouts, then this drink is definitely for you. The CCL is a cup of cold brew with a vegan caramel mixed with a coconut almond cream and topped with a sprinkle of salt. The hubby ordered an iced vanilla latte, which is the only thing he's ever gotten here because it's always satisfying.
google avatar

Ari R.

Yelp
Well, it's only good until it's not any longer. They have shrunk their large size, which is fine... but they raised prices anyway. And it takes FOREVER to get your drink now. Some employees are nice while other seem completely over it. It's just not a consistent good experience like it was for so long. I'm going to Ernest or Koffi for awhile!
