NYC Pizzerias That Have Closed - Eater NY

10 Superior Neighborhood Slice Joints - Eater NY

"Proudly proclaiming itself the oldest pizzeria on Smith Street (there’s really not all that much competition), Caruso’s in Cobble Hill also functions as an Italian restaurant, with an expanded roster of pastas and dinner entrees. These are all fine, but the pizza is particularly good, including several round pies featuring fresh mozzarella. The pie called “fresh mozzarella” is the most engaging, and it can be made with the restaurant’s signature sesame crust, whereby the ridge around the pie is implanted with seeds. However that innovation originated, the slice is absolutely great." - Robert Sietsema

Yelp
The Good. -Alvo is exactly what the neighborhood needed in this specific space. There's no slice joint within a few blocks, and Alvo has filled the need perfectly. We often pick up their super tasty slices to bring to the playground, and they will deliver their consistently excellent pies as well. -The white slices are awesome, the meatballs are very solid, and the salads (tahini caesar!) are actually very tasty, and a step up from your regular (lackluster) romaine topped with bottled dressing you get at most pizza shops. -The crust is light and thin and crisp, the sauce is quality, the toppings are great (although I do wish they used the proper thick pepperoni that cups up). -They have chicken fingers and fries! Love that for my daughter who isn't always down with pizza. That being said, she's eaten Alvo and loved it every time we've gotten it, so I can't actually tell you if the chicken fingers and fries are good yet. The Bad. -I miss the bangin' Detroit style pies that La Rose (the previous tenant in the space) was slangin'. But we can't have everything, and that's not remotely Alvo's fault. -The crust is light and thin and crisp, so I personally want 3-4 slices to satiate me, but I'm also a notorious glutton and normal people are fine with two. This is also not Alvo's fault. The Ugly. -One time the delivery guy must've fallen off his bike or something, because all the cheese and toppings were slammed up against the side of the box. Still tasted great though, and I don't think this is Alvo's fault either. In case you can't tell, it's almost all good with Alvo.

Yelp
You certainly will not go here for the ambiance. it just doesn't exist here. These gents either have no clue about its importance or it's the least of their concern. Not only is their space just as lifeless and uninviting as the last family who owned the shop previously, they should take salad off of their marquee and take some salad making lessons. Awful! You'd be better off getting a salad at the deli across the street for half the price and a substantially greater salad of value and taste. Unfortunately this is their icing. If you're home and decide that you want pizza, check this out. Thin crust. Perfect saucing. Perfect cheese combo. Cooked to perfection. Too bad this pizza was not included in the last best pizza in the tri state pizza contest last week trying to ridiculously suggest Connecticut as the pizza haven of the tri state region. Poppycock! With over 60,000 pizza parlors in NY, Ct. Has not a chance at bingo! This pizza is boss. I and my friends have taken this delicious pizza to our tastebuds three separate occasions. Scrumptious! This is NYC pizza at its best. Don't look for service here after ordering. They have limited beverages. Ice doesn't exist. Seems like the best place to pass up on a hot day. AC does not exist with seating behind the over 500 degree ovens. Make no mistake about it. For those of you who ate pizza from the brick oven downstairs on Soundview Boulevard know what I'm talking about. Those of you who ate pizza in the pizza parlor across the street from Ann n Toni's on Arthur Avenues little Italy in the Bronx knows what I'm talking about. I'm saying all of this because this is the class of pizza we haven't had in NY since so many have declared that Robertas knows how to make pizza. Roberta's doesn't even come close. Not even their frozen supermarket fiasco. John's on Bleeker, tasty, but doesn't come close! Carlos in Yonkers on Central Avenue is better and the patron, god rest his soul, Peter passed a few short years ago pizza on this day are better than the first two I mentioned. You want to eat real NYC pizza, eat here. You Will come back. You will tell your friends. You will finally know what real pizza is all about. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Alvo Pizza in Cobble Hill serves up slices and salads, in which the latter uses vegan dressings! We tried their 18" White, which was topped with basil cream, mozzarella, ricotta, and prima donna, as well as their Crispy Caesar salad, which was prepared with Romaine, roasted chickpeas, breadcrumbs, and tahini Caesar dressing (in which we also added the Italian anchovy for $3). Their deals are pretty good, as the 'Double Slice' gets you 2 red slices (tomato, mozzarella, and prima donna), a can of soda, and a dipping sauce, and the 'Slice and Salad' deal gets you 1 red slice, a side salad, and a can of soda. Staff were friendly! Love the blue interior; there's also a counter and a few tables. +check out their deals +friendly service +look for the blue awning

Yelp
Amateur night at the Apollo. Alvo is an old fashioned Pizzeria, doing business in a new fangled neighborhood. There are four types of Pizza to choose from. I ordered two red slices, and I grabbed a seat. Pizza wasn't great, but that could be opening night jitters. Plusses are a large clean bathroom, and easy access to the F/G line. I'm willing to give them another try.

Yelp
Really good cheese slice. Super thin crust, just the way I like it. Hope they do well.

Yelp
Slices are really, really good. Specials always a well thought out addition. Folks who work here love what they do. Very happy to have these guys in the neighborhood and wish them the best of luck!

Yelp
Fabulous pies, excellent slices and salads. Caruso's was solid, serviceable pizza and La Rose's Detroit-style pizza was delicious but pricy (and a bit heavy). Happy to say that Alvo really delivers: perfect crust, quality ingredients, good value, friendly folks, cute space. Our new go-to pizzeria.
