"A cafe designed to celebrate the legacy of famed agricultural scientist and inventor Dr. George Washington Carver has opened inside South Side cultural arts and education center Little Black Pearl, in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Carver 47, helmed by chef and professional vocalist Lizz Wright, will feature dinner boxes and bowls using ingredients from an onsite garden and featuring local vegetable purveyors. Wright says she was inspired by Carver’s relationship to nature when designing the menu. Inside the center, now back open for the first time since the pandemic shutdown in March, Wright is offering a sizable all-day menu includes items including Affy Tapple pancakes topped with spiced apples, caramel, candied peanuts, and peanut butter-butter, a Booker T flatbread accented with mushrooms, spinach, chicken, thyme, and meatless Quarantine Burger spiked with Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. It also features juices and smoothies with names related to Carver’s life story, including Green Glory and Alternative Fuel. Born out of a partnership with designer and Little Black Pearl founder Monica Haslip, the new cafe menu realizes of one of Wright’s long-held dreams. “I’ve been saving magazine clippings for my own cafe since I was 15,” she says. “I’ve been thinking about some version of this for a long time, but I had no idea how I would go about it.” On top of the regular menu, the cafe also will serve dinner boxes, including a Harvest Bowl for one (herb-roasted chicken with gravy or marinated portobello steaks with gravy; sweet potatoes; balsamic onions, kale, and pomegranate salad) and a ragu autunnale with oxtails or herb-roasted eggplant (tomato sauce with garlic and chili-roasted broccolini) The cafe space at 1050 E. 47th Street also includes a retail market with produce, flowers, home goods, clothing, and more." - Naomi Waxman

Google
We had the breakfast sandwich, a smoothie, and some tea. All three were great, as was the service! Apparently, the breakfast sandwich is a go-to, especially when made with the cheddar & scallion biscuit. It's easy to see why.

Google
Lovely atmosphere, super nice staff, and delicious food! A really nice variety of food and drink options, plus pastries. The store has so much to offer, perfect place to pickup a gift, or some flowers and spices for your own home. What a gem, I’m already planning my trip back. 😊

Google
We went there for my birthday brunch this year. What a gem! Friendly staff, delicious food, unique artwork, good music playing from the speakers, cool items for sale. It's a whole vibe. Hope to be back.

Google
Amazing food and ambiance! I had the Carter Breakfast, which was incredible! They also have many food and self-care products as well. Very lovely place to eat, sip, and relax!

Google
I came to Carver 47 to honor my good friend Warren bc he recently passed away and this was his favorite coffee shop. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with such beautiful smiles, soulful music and fresh flowers! I was sold on the vibes alone. I ordered the catfish and yellow grits and honey, it was bomb! I also ordered one of the most popular smoothies(can’t remember the name) and it was delicious. My food came out quickly and was popping hot, flavorful and fresh! I’m not from Chicago, but when I visit again, I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
Today was my first visit and I'm hooked! I have a new favorite place. It's beautiful, has many sauces and spices for cooking, the food is impeccable, I mean you going to flavor town for real! The coffee is perfection, it's sometimes hard to get a good matcha latte but they got it right. I can't wait to return. Highly recommend 10/10

Google
“The biscuits and bread at Carver 47 is seriously the BEST I’ve ever had in the world. I have no idea how she makes the biscuits so perfectly fluffy. She should never share that recipe.”

Yelp
Catfish sandwich = amazing! Staff = super friendly and accommodating. Overall experience = A++

Yelp
Very good avocado toast. Cool place, nice ambience, will be back to try other things.

Yelp
This place is so very earthy and unlike any place I've been too. If you visited precovid, it has moved to 47th a few doors down from the previous corner location. The food tastes better, the ambience is sooooo much better, and the service on the Saturday I went was amazing. Our table had a mosaic of what looked like Frida Kahlo. The music was a whole vibe. Neosoul was the groove. So many plant displays, but not in a traditional way. Books are displayed for purchase or perusing. Gorgeous flowers are available by the stem. You can make your own beautiful arrangements. There are health, beauty, condiments and other sundries arranged so beautifully in their own categories. The breakfast bowl was phenomenal. My smoothie was one of the best I've ever had. I will be returning.

Yelp
It's such a chill vibe here, it's hard not to feel relaxed while doing work or conversing with others. There's individual and communal seating available, and plenty of outlets to utilize your computer should you have it. I didn't realize that they had hot food until I actually sat down to work one day, and they offer breakfast, lunch, and brunch items. I ordered the catfish and grits dish, which was very filling and felt relatively light, considering how heavy a fried meal can get. I especially loved the picked tomato and onion salad that came with it, as it offered a very nice, fresh balance to fish and grits. And their homemade chai latte can easily be a healthy dessert. I've also had their smoothies, which are refreshing and aren't heavily sweet. I really appreciate all this place offers!

Phil P.

Yelp
I heard about this spot at a community meet8ng....OHMYGOODNESS......something to be said when you are greeted by the staff and it's not forced but genuine. Smiles around like people.was enjoying not only working there but helping you! The ambiance is a nice balance of youth and older with the staff and clientele. The place is long in length and wonderfully decorated. Not a lot of seats, but it's due to everything being offered. Take a look at the pics.....nice smooth colors in furnishings. I ordered the basil chicken. Wonderful alternative to the normal burger. Sea chips...and being the Starbucks fanatic, I always side-eye the folks when I look at the coffe cuz NORMALLY it's not strong enough. I thoroughly enjoyed my dark with Oatmilk and hazelnut....

Yelp
Love this place. It's small and cozy, but big enough to sit and do some work on my laptop. They sell a lot of black owned/local merchandise which is cool. My favorite thing for breakfast here is the BYOB breakfast sandwich. BUT went here today and I'm pretty sure they changed the sausage unfortunately :( it didn't taste the same at all, so I will have to explore the menu a little more to find a new favorite. My husband loves the catfish sandwich. The staff here is amazing!

Kristen B.

Yelp
Place was a nice feel, I love the staff. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Food was pretty good - I had the grits and catfish with tomato salad. Yummy! My partner had the french toast and said it was good too. Music was on point, and a big thank you for my birthday donut haha.

Steve A.

Yelp
Best things here are the smoothies, but after trying the food, you won't be so sure of that anymore. Carver 47 is also a proudly African American owned business with an appreciation of culture and history. It's fun to learn more about historical figures, all while sipping and eating on some good shit. Even though the area isn't quite all together yet, it's getting better. This is a bit out of the way but good to make the effort to support local businesses such as this. As you may have known, George Washing Carver invented peanut butter. It's of course available here. There's much more than just that though. For starters, it has a whole lot of refreshing and healthy beverages. They have a vast array of colorful smoothies. I like the Evergreen the best. It's kind of expensive for smoothies at about $8, but these do come with a lot packed in. This one is made with almond milk, avocados, bananas, mango, pineapple, spinach, and spirulina. It's a green color of course. Lots of vegan choices for these and also food. The last time here I had the Quarantine Burger, which is about the heartiest thing you can get. It's about $10 but it's big. This is a Beyond Burger topped with caramelized onions, cheddar, pickles, and sweet Baby Ray's. Get it vegan by ordering without cheddar and on a pretzel bun. There's also breakfast food like Avocado Toast and more. Good place for doing work, and students like to come here to read, write, and do assignments. It's also more than just a cafe. They have lots of local art featured on the walls, and they also have a few potential gift ideas, including hip and holistic items like soaps.

Justine C.

Yelp
The Food was awesome! I had the catfish and grits and it was oh so delicious! My partner had a Carver Special and we split both so we can both have fish and grits and their homemade apple sausage. Smoothies and green juice (which they made for me) were well, balanced, and very flavorful! Staff was so friendly and helpful! This is much New spot!

Yelp
I have only done carryout here, first and foremost. Now that we're in autumn I probably won't be enjoying the outdoor seating, unless they invest in those heatlamps that were EVERYWHERE in 2020. I was visiting the Hyde Park Jazz fest next door and happened upon this place. I had heard about it but I don't get to that area much, though it is only a couple of miles from where I live. I heard of an app called 'Not Good to Go' where restaurants and stores sell food that is leftover BUT STILL GOOD for a tiny fraction of the price. Its a GREAT way to save money and eat like a queen/king/non-binary royal. I did a pickup there, and was able to get black eyed peas succotash, sliced sausages, banana nut bread, and blended juice for $6! The trick is you have to pick it up during a certain time specified on the app. I heated up the food at home and it was GREAT! The sausage, the peas, the bread, all was good. The green juice was about as good as the other store bought stuff. There are also other market items available like honey, peanut butter (of course, George Washington Carver) maple syrup, flowers..it's a nice 'gourmet market' feel, rather rich for my blood, but a good breath of fresh air in the fast food enclave that is 47th street.

Keisha H.

Yelp
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I visit at lease 2-3 a week. The juices are amazing, food stellar, customer service A1. I love that they open early for my after workout. Sometimes they dont have fresh juices when they open which makes me made bc uhm why dont you have juices ready when you open? not a fan of the smoothies but the waffles, and juices are to die for! Also since they have move around the corner the dine in space is so cute, very accommodating for working and just hanging with friends. and the retail section has so many unique and exciting gift and personal options.

Jeannine W.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place. I had the fried catfish sandwich with a side salad. The food is cooked to order and everything was delicious and fresh. The service was excellent and the atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back. I will definitely be back to try other items. Oh, on the way out I got a slice of the lemon blueberry cake. Amazing!

Danicka B.

Yelp
Food, staff, and ambiance are perfect. I love having lunch here. The marketplace always has small black businesses to support. Definitely get a fresh juice!

Honey L.

Yelp
This is a cute cafe with a nice vibe. I met a friend here for brunch and we really enjoyed everything. My favorite part is the variety of local artesian items available for purchase.

Jimm C.

Yelp
The staff seem asleep or high. 9:57 am on a Saturday and ordered a waffle -"Sorry you cannot order a waffle until 10 am" they cannot even place the order until 10 am. So I ordered a salad "Sorry you cannot order a salad for 3 more minutes"; so I ordered a latte with skim milk " would you like whole milk or non milk?" is it 10 am yet so I can order the waffle? So ordered the waffle, salad for my friends and then I ordered the make your own breakfast sandwich- with sausage, avocado and pepper jam and what kind of cheese? "We cannot change the cheese" WTF? Okay so just the three items - so WHY did they add egg? Did I say egg? Did I ask for egg? Wow! Food is okay but would not come here again.

Quyen B.

Yelp
I got the catfish sandwich and it was so good with the hot sauce yum! The smoothie had all fresh ingredients and it was so good. Love the ambiance and friendly staffs

Mona G.

Yelp
I love this place !! The staff is really sweet and fun to talk to . The food is always so good from the breakfast sandwich to the pastries . Anything with pesto on menu try , it's so good !! The teas and smoothies and coffee taste so good . It always smells so good in the cafe and the music is upbeat but not loud . It's such a great spot to get work done . The internet works really well . Parking is easy only downside is limited seating .

Jazzmin B.

Yelp
I recently discovered Carver 47 during a bike ride and decided to stop in for a smoothie. I was pleasantly surprised by the cozy atmosphere of the shop and the friendly staff. It was evident that the shop has a strong sense of community, and I appreciated the added touch of fresh flowers for sale. I am eager to return and sample more of their offerings.

Brian P.

Yelp
I can't say I'm inclined to return. I was meeting a friend for lunch. After a quick map search, we picked Carver47 because the photos looked great. The location is good bc parking was easy. The ambiance is 5-star! The customer service is top-notch. However, the food was terrible. To clarify, the smoothie I had was worth the $8 price tag. I liked it so much that I decided to order an entree. Not only does the menu read confusingly, but they didn't have any chicken. Really disappointing. I tried to substitute my chicken for deli turkey but... it was just bad. The best part about my meal was the chips. The wait times were easily 20-25 minutes and we were the only ones there on a Saturday afternoon. My recommendation is to call in advance. I wanted so bad to like this place, but I don't think I'll be back.

CSheri M.

Yelp
First of all, this place is more than I expected. It has so many goodies to explore. The staff is gracious with explaining options for food and drinks prepared in house. At our table, there are scattered selections of tables, we had a Catfish Sandwich with a side salad, Quarantine Burger, Orchard and Wisdom smoothies. Everything was so fresh and well prepared. We enjoyed each item. It hit the spot. Catfish sandwich - 5 stars - cornmeal fried on toasted brioche bun Quarantine Burger -5 stars - Beyond burger, onion jam, pickles, barbecue, on a toasted brioche bun, cheddar cheese optional Side salad - 5 stars - mixed greens, arugula, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers with light vinaigrette Wisdom smoothie - 5 stars - very smooth frozen chia flavored Orchard smoothie - 4 stars - this had various fruits with carrots, ginger and coconut milk, yet it was unexpectedly savory I'm taking a smoothie to go. I'll be back!

Nerissa L.

Yelp
I stopped by this spot the other day and was immediately impressed! The decor is everything and has a beautiful southern vibe! I dropped by in the morning to get a latte and a pastry. The latte was delicious and I also tried the lemon poppy seed cake which was also good. I like the fact that I could also order lunch while I was there to have for later on in the day. I ordered the catfish sandwich which comes with your choice of a side salad or chips, I got the salad! The staff was so friendly and welcoming and there are so many other cute things you can purchase at the market as well. All sorts of soaps, candles, shirts and other nice items. I took lots of photos so you can see. Anyway, I am looking forward to coming back here soon ! Check it out if you haven't already!

Christine H.

Yelp
The coolest cafe in the Hyde Park area. The decor inside is beautiful. The products they sell are very cool and unique. The staff is super nice. I had the quiche with meat snd it was very good. It's very thick (like a 2 layer quiche) and it's very filling. I also had the Moses juicer and it was also very good. You can taste the ginger afterwards and the beet color is beautiful. It comes in a reusable glass bottle with their logo on it. I'm def coming here again to try their other stuff. I heard their burgers are really good too.

Jim D.

Yelp
This gem of place took me back to catholic school. After one bite of the avocado toast I recited, "Hail Mary mother of Grace, the Lord is with thee". This avocado toast is now my favorite in the entire city & I'm excited to other things the place has to offer such as the bar soap, incense & cocktail syrups. I wasn't aware it was a marketplace in addition to cafe selling several random goods including books. The sell the best apple juice in the world "Martinelli" as well as cold pressed juices. But back to the avocado toast, the feta is the star of the show but the substantial amount of avocado is no slouch & at $8 this will be my go to in the future.

Christopher V.

Yelp
There's something rewarding about supporting small business, especially those that invest back into the community. Carver 47 Cafe has a chill quiet vibe perfect for getting a little work done. The menu is straightforward, but has enough options to find something satisfying. They even have a garden out back. I usually stick to the smoothies. The Orchard is probably my favorite at the moment. George Washington Carver is often overlooked for his contributions. He did more than find countless uses for peanuts. I'm glad they celebrated his legacy with it's namesake. Stop in and support. You'll enjoy the food, vibe and knowing that you're supporting the community. **Mention Yelp for a 10% discount**

Kayla W.

Yelp
I am a frequent visitor of Carver 47. I just love the vibe of this place. So aesthetically pleasing. So many thing to like. Not only is a cafe/restaurant but it's a wellness market. They sell clothing, books, flowers, candles, soaps, gourmet honey, gourmet sauces, you name it. There's so many items that your eyes are drawn to. I'm especially interested in buying one of the sauces. I usually come here for coffee or a matcha latte. Both are good in my opinion. I ordered the avocado toast and it was amazing. The micro greens are a nice touch and the avocado is so creamy. The mixture of all the flavors on this avocado toast make it like no other. I've also tried the chicken sandwich which reminds me of a chicken parmesan sandwich that I give a thumbs up to as well. The customer service is always friendly. When I order my coffee/matcha beverage they always taking their time to make it taste great. Whenever there is an issue they are happy to make it right.

Darrell W.

Yelp
Highly recommended. The food is excellent and the service is good. The ambiance is country store-like, casual and homey. Not a lot of seating but most people carry out. They also have a nice selection of products (sauces, pastas, jellies, soaps, etc.) for purchase.

Joy Victoria C.

Yelp
I recently moved back to Chicago and stumbled upon this gem. Great ambiance, food & service.

LeShonne S.

Yelp
Walked over to Carver 47 with my bestie to pick up a tea. This space is so cute! There's art, flowers, food, drinks, soaps and other apothecary items and good vibes. Plenty of seating inside (and in front). I had a piece of the mushroom quiche and it was so delicious. I love this spot!

Meagan D.

Yelp
First of all, I love the whole entire vibe here. It just makes me feel healthy mentally and physically. But I had to jump on here and give it five stars when I took one bite of the sweet potato cake... OMG y'all it is so good!!! Moist and the flavor! Did I say FLA-VOR! Check them out

Gino W.

Yelp
On occasion I frequent a Senegalese restaurant in Kenwood. While leaving from lunch recently, I noticed a cafe just to the west of the restaurant. Curious as to what their offerings were, I stopped in for something quick. This Sunday the cafe was not filled and part of it may have been because I arrived 30 minutes before closing. From across the room I heard, "Hello," after which a young lady approached and asked if she could answer any questions and if I knew what I wanted. Footnote: just that initial engagement smacked of a welcoming environment and good customer service. I ordered an iced Moroccan mint tea that had mint leaves in it. This was a winner. The woman who took my order said the cafe had been open for about a year. I had no idea. Will definitely return and try some of the other menu items. It's a spacious cafe and the offerings look very appetizing. But if only to support a small or minority owned business, they will get my dollars.

Andrea B.

Yelp
this place isn't open right now - Friday Dec 22nd. it's really too bad since I had things I wanted to buy for gifts for Christmas and this was my only day off . the website didn't indicate it was closed either . smh

Gerry H.

Yelp
Beautiful and welcoming cafe and small boutique store. Staff are wonderful and friendly. The space is bigger than it looks. There are some tables in the rear. Food is fantastic, and their coffee offerings are worthy. Must be one of the most comforting and visually-pleasing cafes in Bronzeville.

Chanita C.

Yelp
This place is perfect! It's warm and welcoming from the entry, the people are friendly, and the food and drinks are good too. I love all the juices, and the quiche.

Tommie H.

Yelp
Carryout Service was good, food is delicious. I've had a variety of breakfast sandwiches, I.e., flannel steak sandwich, sausage and turkey bacon, served on a buttermilk biscuit. All quite substantial and filling. They also serve a variety of smoothies which my vegan daughter in law tells me is delicious and filling. I would recommend this restaurant, especially if you are vegan or semi-vegan or just want something different to eat.

Willa N.

Yelp
Healthy food and great service!!! Great asset to the community. Will order the quiche for breakfast next visit...

Nick B.

Yelp
If there was ever a wait at Carver 47, it wouldn't be worth it. If you can order an hour ahead, then you're fine. Their breakfast burrito certainly needs more spice but wasn't bad by any means.

Terry P.

Yelp
Historical and inviting atmosphere. Freshly prepared and delicious food, great staff members. Chef Richard AMAZING and in addition to the coffee, tea, baked goods there are some items being sold that feed your mind. I purchased candles, incense, soap and fragrance and I can say they were of excellence in quality.

Emily R.

Yelp
Carver 47 Food & Wellness Market is everything you want in a neighborhood cafe. The people who work there are great and super interesting to talk to. There are so many treasures in their market, music is always good, and the food is on point!

Donald N.

Yelp
A restaurant dedicated to the life and work of George Washington Carver. Good food, great atmosphere and close to home.

David B.

Yelp
Peaceful, good food, delicious juices, great playlist, cool people, nice vibes, will be back!

Regine M.

Yelp
So good Love this local spot Had the breakfast sandwich with homemade biscuit Delish

Quiana O.

Yelp
Amazing Avocado Toast !! Which is so hard to find in the city aside from downtown. The hours on Yelp are wrong . The environment is everything inside. Can't believe I have been passing by this hidden GEM

Lisa C.

Yelp
12/22/2021 around 10:45ish Live near so we finally decided to drop in...the clerk/ barista/owner ( not sure what is role is) was extremely aggressive, rude and unfriendly. I asked if there was a light version for a vanilla latte and he snapped back "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" I said skim milk/ sugar free vanilla. He snapped back " WE DON'T HAVE ANY OF THAT" then looked beyond me to the next guest. My husband then asked a question and got the same messed up attitude & tone so we left and went elsewhere! Looks like a cool place but this guy should not be on the front line or anywhere in customer service. Bad attitude and vibes. He strikes me as the type of person who could care less about a bad review but it makes me feel better to write this because he ruined our coffee run this morning.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Great food excellent service!! Nice vibe. Super friendly cashier. Would highly recommend

Brittney J.

Yelp
I had been wanting a fresh juiced drink. I did not know this place existed. Thanks to yelp I was able to get there and try their "green" juice. I can't remember the name. I just know it was amazing. The staff was kind and cheerful. The atmosphere was very relaxing. I will definitely be back. I also got three bags of their salt and vinegar chips. Nice place to go do homework, a date hang with friends or even a business meeting. The vibe it just so chill.

Phoenix W.

Yelp
I done with this place. This is not the first but will be the last time I have problems with food service there. The employees are uneducated on what they have on their menu to the extent that they literally don't know what the ingredients are in a drink. And please tell me how a manager doesn't know how to make a beverage? Impossible. I was not trying to start my Saturday like this. A couple of Saturday's there was a brunch that was supposed to have vegan options. The brunch was 30 minutes late and the item want available. The food was good but the utensils didn't fit the food served so lots of spillage. Anywho, the space is gorgeous. Issa a vibe until you order drinks.

Miss A.

Yelp
Came here yesterday with my friend because he raced about them for a long time. He was soooooooo right about this place! The atmosphere, the art, the openness of the space, and the staff...all truly beautiful. We got mocha and caramel lattes (not pictured) that were perfect, along with a delicious homemade Belgium waffle and biscuit sandwich. Wherever you live, make the trip over here. You won't be disappointed.

Christina R.

Yelp
I love stopping my here for coffee and a banana bread when I am in Hyde Park. Thanks for the good tunes in the morning!

FreeDom ..

Yelp
As a newcomer to Chicago, Carver 47 Cafe was a breath of fresh air, and a great place to focus and get work done. The interior decorating is superb; the music and the artwork is culture-centered and the service is extremely good. It was a cozy, clean and extremely relaxing experience. I completely recommend...

Tina D.

Yelp
Literally my favorite cafe in Chicago! Cool decor with plants everywhere and a super chill vibe. The staff are awesome and friendly. Good tea and coffee and delicious small bites and sandwiches. Love the gourmet market speciality items they sell. A little pricey but I can't resist buying the flavor infused olive oils and maple syrups. I really enjoyed their build-your-own breakfast sandwich. Got the chicken sausage on a biscuit. You can also add some veggies to it but I like mine simple egg, meat, cheese, and bread. Good stuff!
