Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in La Paz, Mexico

"Origen La Paz, located inside the Hotel Casa al Mar, prepares local seafood with clever applications of Mexican techniques, such as ceviche of pen-shell clams marinated in recaudo negro and kanpachi tostada sweetened by baby heirloom tomatoes."

We picked this hotel due to their location. It was very nice being right across from the pearl which is where we get picked up for our boat tours. The only downside to this location is the noise. It will be pretty noisy late into the night. The room was very nice and spacious. We get gorgeous sunset views each day. However the bathroom here was terrible. The shower head is barely functioning. The drainage is backed up and does not drain well from the first day we were there. There’s not enough counter space or hooks to hang things in the bathroom. The staffs were all very nice and helpful though. Someone gave us some aloe vera gel for our sunburn and we were VERY grateful.

Would definitely stay here again. Cute boutique hotel, rooms are very clean, spacious, the furniture is nice and comfortable. The staff is very kind. Location is great within walking distance of your pick up spot, restaurants. Only 3 rooms face the water and these rooms are right on the main street, the weekend can get loud I just had the AC running and it worked well as white noise. They also have a restaurant open for breakfast and dinner with good food offerings.

4/5 stars Our stay at Casa al Mar was overall wonderful, especially for families. The location is unbeatable—right across the street from the beach and just steps from a playground. The hospitality exceeded expectations; the staff were warm and accommodating Our room was spacious, with a clear separation between the bedroom and living area, plus its own dining space and a medium-sized refrigerator. We especially enjoyed our small balcony with an ocean view. There are a few practical things to note. The hotel is on the main strip, so noise levels can be high, especially on weekends, usually calming down around midnight. There are no elevators, but they do provide a bellboy to help with luggage if you’re upstairs. Front entrance closes at 10pm but you are given a door key for your room and for the gate. Note it’s physical keys and not a key card. The bathroom setup wasn’t ideal—the showerhead was very high and without a fully enclosed door, so water spread easily. The hotel doesn’t have a pool, but the beach is literally across the street. Breakfast was included in our package and served at the restaurant next door (which is also where you get ice). There are no phones in the rooms, so communication is done through WhatsApp or by visiting the front desk. Despite minor inconveniences, Casa al Mar delivers in charm, comfort, and location. We’d gladly return for the friendly service and unbeatable beach access.

Stayed for 3 nights last week in Casa Al Mar. All staff I've encountered were extremely lovely. Reception staff speak excellent English and were all very helpful, friendly, and considerate, who helped me arranged taxi to another nearby city & recommended restaurants (Priscilla & Dulce, thank you!!) The entrance and the little courtyard garden were very nicely decorated. The location is extremely central and convenient, plenty of nice cafes & restaurants within walking distance. Definitely gonna stay here next time when i'm back in town.

We booked Casa Al Mar in a “Suite Al Patio Doble” room for four nights on our most recent visit to La Paz. Prior to our arrival, we accepted the hotel’s offer to pick us up at the airport. The cost was 380 pesos. The hotel manager, (yes the manager), ALEXIA, arrived on time and was professional and friendly. ||We arrived at the hotel in the evening, and our room was ready. This boutique hotel’s location on the Malecon is perfect. In addition, the hotel’s entrance is really nice with a boho chic vibe. Our room, Unit 1, was about 900 square feet with two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room, dining room, and kitchen. This room did not have a view of the ocean (we booked late in the game). Upon first entering the room, it looked really nice; also decorated in a boho chic vibe. ||There are a lot of steps inside this room. For example, the living area is sunken from the entrance and the kitchen is sunken from the living room. The same thing occurs upstairs to the bedrooms and bathroom. People with mobility issues or children might want to consider other hotel options. ||Regarding the condition of the unit, it was good. The kitchen was fully outfitted for cooking, and the appliances were in new condition. We did have an issue with the safe, as it was not secured to the wall. It appeared it had been pulled away from the wall for some reason because the holes in the wall were visible. We reported the issue, and they secured the safe the following day. We also had an issue with hot water in the shower and sink. It was somewhat hit or miss; not a huge issue for us. WIFI in the room interacting with the smart TV was troublesome at times. There is no pool at this hotel. In room massage services are available for $90 per hour. ||Regarding the service, it was fantastic (FIVE STARS). In addition to picking us up at the airport, ALEXIA helped arrange excursions including a beach tour and sand boarding adventure for a really great price. In addition to ALEXIA, all of the staff members were friendly and professional including FRIEDA, CONCEPCION, and PRICILLA. ||Overall, we had a great experience at Casa Al Mar with only a coupe of minor room issues; one of which we reported, and they handled it right away. Booking in advance for a balcony room with an ocean view is recommended.

Loved the hotel! Right by the water. The staff there is beyond accommodating and willing to help. Stayed with wife and baby here and it was extremely great.

Perfect location, beautiful room, and the most amazing, friendly hotel staff. My friend and I celebrated our birthdays in Baja and one of the highlights of our trip was staying at Casa Al Mar. The front desk staff was especially friendly, kind, and helpful!

Google
Great location right on the Malecón, with tons of restaurants and bars nearby. We stayed in a balcony room and enjoyed an amazing sunset every night - our room was a nice sanctuary from the city down below. Although it was loud at night, staff provided ear plugs and we didn't mind the energy. The service was spectacular and the staff even helped me get out of a police stop ticket scam! Would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
the main question i always ask after staying at a hotel. would i stay there again? i would stay here again it's a cute entrance and courtyard and the rooms overall feel of rooms modern, ie concrete, glass and wood but before i came back, the hotel really needs to 1) redo the shower floors which are mildewy 2) cut back the bougainvillea tree. the birds go there and are quite loud very early in the morning (for a courtyard facing room). or spray water or use some other deterrent to keep birds away) 3) put triple-paned glass on the ocean front units. (taxis blaring music wasn't welcome late at night). - of course if you'll be out late, that won't matter ;) 4) Double check all AC units. one of AC units in our room wasn't working, so that needs a fix it seems all bathrooms drains in mexico give off a slight odor so i don't think there's a fix for that and that's an issue here the location is right in the boardwalk/malecon which makes it close to restaurants, stores like OXO (kinda like a 7 eleven) etc, but also close to the noise and 'energy' of the little city. just depends on what you're looking for but the beaches out front are not swimmable (we assumed they would be). you have to drive to a swimmable beach

Yelp
After some pretty extensive hotel and Airbnb research, my friend and I settled on this boutique hotel, which has to be the nicest lodging option on the boardwalk. Having walked up and down the malecón multiple times upon arrival, I didn't see anything that came close. But this comes with a price, about $225 US/night during low season, although requesting an ocean view probably didn't make it cheaper. The front desk was very friendly upon check in, arming us with a wealth of unsolicited tourist information which proved to be very useful. Our room wouldn't be ready for several hours after an early morning flight so we took some of her pointers of where to go in the meantime. I'm not sold on 5 stars only because the WiFi sucked and the room could have been a little more tidy. In fairness, the guests before us likely checked out late since our room wasn't ready by 2:30 whereas the front desk advised us it would likely be ready between 1 and 2 given the 12:00 check out time. Aside from that, the walls are pretty thin and you can hear everything from the courtyard and the street below, which gets pretty loud at night. As for the breakfast (not included), I'd recommend going here even if you're not staying at the hotel. I had some delicious Mexicanized eggs Benedict and my buddy was satisfied with his hot cakes.

Yelp
This is a true escape from bustling Cabo with a boutique, quiet feel. The suite overlooks the malecon Aka boardwalk, offering the perfect location for sunset. You are steps away from the sea of Cortez and fabulous restaurants and bars! I love this gem and can't wait to return!

Yelp
My husband, my puppy Lucy, and I stayed here for two weeks while we were making improvements on our sailboat. It became a new home for us. We fell in love with the staff. The restaurant is fabulous and they were very welcoming to our very large puppy. It's right on the Malecon and near the heart of El Centro. We could walk everywhere. Not to mention our suite was just beautiful

Yelp
Casa al Mar is absolutely the cutest hotel in la Paz. We booked a room without doing much research on the hotel and we were pleased to be welcomed by friendly and very helpful staff who had great English. When we walked into the room we were greeted by an adorable and clean spacious area that was just as beautiful as the patio outside. After we settled in we were happy to find out that the hotel was located within blocks of some of the best restaurants In la Paz. This hotel was all around amazing and comparable to many high priced stays in the US. 100% would recommend!
