Casa Caminada

"This restaurant enjoys a lovely quiet location in the castle grounds. Inside the bright, high-ceilinged space, modern design meets warm wood; outside, there is a delightful terrace. A charming team provides competent service. They serve regional cuisine, in which seasonal ingredients sourced from select local producers go into extremely flavoursome dishes – the produce steals the show! Andreas Caminada's take on Grisons classics can also be found on the menu. Be sure to try his quark bizochels, for example. Tip: You can buy bread baked in the on-site bakery and other goods in their shop next door." - Michelin Inspector

"Why we love it: A foodie hideaway from a three-Michelin starred chef The Highlights: - A Michelin-starred chef overseeing operations - Gourmet—yet affordable—fare at the on-site restaurant - A lovely setting in the Rhine Valley The Review: The Rhine Valley village of Fürstenau may officially be the world’s smallest city, but it does boast the famous Schauenstein Schloss restaurant and castle hotel—and, since 2018, this more casual and contemporary option set in the castle’s former stables. Designed by Spanish-born interiors guru Patricia Urquiola, Casa Caminada is, like its parent restaurant and hotel, overseen by Swiss chef Andreas Caminada, who can often be spotted bustling around the property. Given the hotel’s foodie cred, most guests come for the eats—whether they choose the fine-dining option at the castle or the restaurant at the Casa, which offers similarly elegant Swiss fare at more wallet-friendly prices. Breakfast is included in the room rate and features epic breads from the on-site, traditional-style bakery. After all the great meals—and some bracing hikes along nearby trails—relax in the guesthouse’s garden with a glass of wine, then retire to one of the 10 rooms. While they’re all different sizes and shapes, each is awash in warm woods, simple furnishings, and crisp Italian linens, and equipped with a private balcony that lets the views take center stage."

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"There used to be a singular motive for skiers in Switzerland’s pinot noir-producing Rhine Valley to ditch the glitz of St. Moritz and head an hour northwest to the village of Fürstenau après their après: Schloss Schauenstein, an understated 16th-century castle with a three-Michelin-starred restaurant. Now its chef, Andreas Caminada, is giving them reason to stay the night. Last October, he opened the exquisite Casa Caminada in a born-again barn on the castle grounds, where rustic ambience is tempered with urban touches, and authenticity replaces the musty luxuries ubiquitous in Swiss mountain-palace hotels. Upstairs, 10 sun-flooded rooms retain original exposed beams, enhanced by reclaimed larchwood parquet floors and furniture custom-made by local carpenters. To soften the masculinity, Patricia Urquiola added pops of refined Italian style, including brass-and-magenta-linen loungers for absorbing sunshine or finishing a novel. It is unexpected and fabulous. The airy new restaurant offers buttery and crunchy maluns (crumb-like dumplings made with shredded potatoes) and walnut tortes baked in a volcanic-stone oven. Casa Caminada places the design and food expected of Milan, 123 miles south, in one of the most glorious natural settings anywhere on earth. FLASH POINT To access the village’s 14th-century Protestant church, use the honor-system key in the box by the cemetery gate. +41 81-632-30-50; casacaminada.com. We had the opportunity to stay at Casa Caminada as part of our honeymoon. Not only was the room perfect, but the breakfast was beyond expectation! The staff is charming, and the bakery on the ground floor makes any resistance to gluttony completely futile. Many thanks for a stay that we won't soon forget.

What can I say?! A casual concept from Genius Chef Andreas Caminada. My wife and I enjoyed a light meal on the terrace as we were to have a big dinner at the Castle later that evening. Everything from the ambiance to the service to the food was perfect. Really high caliber operation going on here. Casa Caminada includes a restaurant, bakery, shop, wine cellar, and guest rooms. Worth a trip, it’s truly gastronomic for all the senses. No problem accommodating vegan dietary preference.

I stayed her for 2 nights with my wife and we really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is based in the small town of Fürstenau which is the smallest city in the world. ||||- Design: The hotel has a chic Swiss design. The bedrooms are built on themes of simplicity and minimalism. You won't find a minibar or fancy furniture but there is a lovely design and feel to the rooms.||||- Room: We stayed in the "Family Plus" room which was spread over 2 floors and had 2 bathrooms (1 with a shower). The room was spacious and had a lovely balcony. ||||- Service: Overall, the service was welcoming, friendly and helpful. ||||- Food: We had breakfast and dinner at this hotel and all of the food was delicious! I found the dinner in particular to be great with plenty of options. The hotel prides themselves on serving food from local producers. The hotel also did a great job catering towards my gluten allergy!||||- Tips: Check out the little shop in the hotel, it has some really unique foods!||Also, try to go to the (Michelin Star) Schloss Schauenstein restaurant -- we went for dinner there and it was absolutely fantastic!

Visited with two children (both under 8) and three adults and had a wonderful evening. The children were treated equally to the adults. The service was excellent. As was the food of course. The dining room is very well designed with many great little details. Look forward to returning.

Came to casa camadina when I heard the chef turned the formal stables into a hotel. The drive from Zurich airport would have been shorter but I chose to drive in from Milan Malpensa. Even with the rain the view was stunning, some lake & mountain views, some hairpin bends. Check in is usually 230 pm but luckily my room was ready at 1130 am so it allowed me the chance to shower before a blissful lunch at the adjacent and gorgeous Schloss Schauenstein. ||Location: The village is tiny and sleepy with friendly locals, a short drive away from the lush mountain trails nearby, there is a pretty little lake Canovasee ten minutes away and next time I come back I’ll want to checkout Viamala just 8 minutes away. ||Accommodations: I was in Room 9 which was simple, clean-lined, modern & comfortable (no facial tissue paper but the toilet seat cover is automated), the room comes with two lovely balconies, air con in the room didn’t work well but you can easily just sleep with the balcony doors opened. ||Food: Came here to eat at Schloss Schauenstein & it did not disappoint, everything was delicious and gorgeously presented in a cosy room with absolutely perfect service. Casa Caminada’s food was good too — after a decadent meal at SS, was happy to have more simple and local fare for dinner. The restaurant was quite busy and the tables a little too close together. I don’t usually eat bread but Casa Caminada has their own bakery so you really cannot pass up on their divine bread. ||This is really an unfussy bed and breakfast place, ie the receptionist that checked me in was also my waiter at dinner. Checkout was at Schloss Schauenstein. Yet this is a place of beauty and simplicity, just up my alley. ||

I booked this hotel after reading a review in CN. We didn't have a car (although it would have been more convenient to have one), so we arrived via train/bus. The bus arrives every hour, so be sure to plan you next day the day before. We were in room 5 and loved it--excellent view. We stayed for two nights, ate at the restaurant for dinner both nights. We had the tasting menu the first night, the tasting menu didn't change the second night, so we ordered a variety of things off of the a la carte menu the second night. Breakfast was great and included (buffet--charcuterie, egg, bread, made to order coffee, juice, etc). All of the food is local. There is a fireplace/lounge area for guests to enjoy, which we used. Overall, very relaxing stay.||||Negatives: Bathroom walls looked a bit dirty/aged (cracks on the wall), which is odd for such a new hotel--the rest of the room looked great. Corkage fee was a bit high 35 CHF (not sure if that is typical for Switzerland or not).

I can highly recommend this property in Fürstenau, which calls itself the smallest city in the world. The hotel offers stylishly rustic, yet modern accommodations. The rooms are simple, but stylish. We stayed in room 9 which is on the corner of the building with two balconies. The orange tile bathroom is an odd choice, but it’s cheery in the morning. ||The hotel also features a restaurant serving up tasty local food, including pasta with cheese and mushrooms and locally caught fish. I was particularly impressed by the bread, which is made on site and they even roast their own coffee beans. For adventurers, there is a nearby 10,000 year old gorge and if you want to spoil yourself you are steps away from a three-star Michelin restaurant.
