19 Incredible Places to Eat Central American Food in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"The third Guatemalan restaurant to occupy this corner has won back customers with dishes like pepian, a pumpkin seed based dish with vegetables and chicken and hilachas, a savory stew of juicy shredded beef flavored by slow cooked tomatoes, chiles güaques, potatoes and carrots brightened with a pinch of achiote." - Bill Esparza

Casa Chapina I don’t know if my words will be strong enough to describe just how truly amazing our experience was tonight. Our server Jesse was busy and didn’t get to us right away. For that she was very apologetic. Her service was friendly and attentive, very welcoming. Something I have learned in my many years working in restaurants, a great server is an amazing asset. Jesse brought us our drinks, chips with puréed black beans and pickled jalapeño with carrots. To drink I had Jamaica, it wasn’t overly sweet it was just right. As far as the food goes. I went overboard and ordered chicharrón with yucca, Plátanos with black beans and crema, as well as an order of Tacos Dorados. My wife ordered a pupusa revuelta with an order of plátanos with black beans and crema. My mother in law ordered a trio of tostadas (1 with puréed black beans, 1 with salsa & 1 with guacamole) for all of us to share. Everything was perfect!!! My chicharrón and yuca fried to absolute perfection. The sweet plantains with the crema and savory black beans was absolutely perfect. My tacos dorados as well as the salsa tostada flavors were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Don’t come here if you’re someone who doesn’t understand that great food takes time to be made.

Google
This is a local mom and pop restaurant, I haven’t been in a minute and recently grabbed lunch. The quantity and quality of food is amazing. The staff are super friendly. I went on a Sat afternoon and it was packed. Can’t wait to come back again.

Delicious. Central America is better than Mexico!

Google
The service is bad, there were no waiters. There was only 1lady who did the cooking took orders, but she was kinda rude. The quality of the food was not what I expected. Especially the "Pan con pollo" The lady never came to ask if I needed anything she was stressed out from all the orders. Then a gentleman saw her using her cell phone and she touched the food without washing her hands , he was extremely upset and left.

Yelp
This place blew me away with the excellent customer service. When having difficulty ordering between the avenas they allowed me to try one and when at the table the waiter was funny , polite , and attentive. The agua frescas were delicious and huge ! Don't forget to get the Moyete for dessert ' Food: 8.6/10 Service:10/10 Parking: 5/10 (street parking)

Yelp
I can't believe I'm just now discovering this place after living in the area for 8 years. Do not sleep on this incredible Latin American/Guatemalan food. I'm Panamanian American and loved everything my husband and I had on a random little neighborhood date we had here recently. I'm writing this now right as I sit here for the second time because I was craving their awesome chicken soup BUT I saw their gate was almost closed and the sign saying CERRADO was up, but the young man kindly let me in and after talking to his mom/chef they are generously making me soup to go. What?! It's like being in Latin America at someone's home and it's real incredible home cooking. BIEN AGRADECIDO!!! Buen provecho a todos. omg and my favorite song just came onnnn by Vicente Fernandez ok I'm in heaven adios

Yelp
OMG their food was exquisite! I highly recommend it. It was literally authentic Guatemalan food - homemade style. Like my Tia used to make it! Yummy!

Irene H.

Yelp
First time eating guatemalteca food. Loved it! Friendly place and amazing food. I would go back again!

Pabel S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Not a lot of places where you could find Mixtas
google avatar

Suzy G.

Yelp
Really good food, our favorite plates where the "huevos rancheros con plántanos" and "Plátanos con frijoles y crema". The trio tostadas with salsa, guacamole and beans are bomb.

Yelp
Saturday 11AM 2/26/22 I think I'm the lucky guy here, our breakfast was great, can't complaint of the service or food. Clean place . Two minor things, for me the coffee needs to be a bit more stronger, hot sauce more spicy. Would I recommend it, I sure will.

Yelp
Very delicious! Being Guatemalan and not having many restaurants available that represent my culture, finding this restaurant in LA was very awesome. The restaurant itself is very beautiful, bringing a bit of the home country to the states. The food is just finger licking, just like my parents make it. A bite from any cuisine just takes you back home. Definitely a must visit while in LA.

Yelp

Yelp
It wasn't the worse but certainly wasn't the best Guatemalan food Ive had outside of my moms cooking. It was descent. I did enjoy the chips with beans they give as appetizer. I don't think I would come again on purpose. I found it just driving by looking for breakfast with my parents. Parking does suck. Doesn't have a private lot. Have to find parking in a residential street. The service was fast and waitress was very friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
First time here, most of the reviews I see here are because of how long the food takes. Let me tell you that if you want authentic home cooked, made from scratch Guatemalan food, it is worth the wait. The garnachas we ordered first were made from scratch, the tortilla melts in your mouth and the cabbage on top is everything. We also had the carne asada, it was very flavorful and the quantity of food is substantial.so keep that in mind when ordering, it's a lot of food. Our server's name was aracely I believe, and service was prompt.

Yelp
The food is absolutely authentic Guatemalan food, it was delicious. I had the Salpicón, it was just like my mom's. The Tostada de curtido, or enchilada as it's called in Guate, was so delicious. I highly recommend the Tamarindo water, it's made from actual Tamarindos. My mom loved the the Caldo de patas. I highly recommend this place, great food and service. I know I'm coming back.

Yelp
We love this place. Good food. Outdoor seating. Great chips, great beans, great plantains. Huge delicious pineapple drink! Always consistent. No complaints whatsoever. Family owned. Sweet people.

Yelp
Omg! What delicious food... Just like my Abuelita Marta would make when I'd go to Guatemala on vacation when I was a child... The horchata is to die for, las tortillas hechas a mano even the tostadas that they serve as an appetizer is delicious... Muchas gracias Casa Chapina Restaurant por so servicio tan amable... Best Guatemalan food in LA...

Yelp
Honestly would say I won't come back again , not to hate on our culture but this location doesn't know how to make pupusa there no love into it , if they do down the line I would possibly come back
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting LA for the weekend and decided to try this place down the street from where I was staying for a quick bite. Food is very poor. 1 star
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Such a lovely Guatemalan spot with handmade tortillas! The breakfast is my fave, but I'll definitely return for the pepian, kacik, and jocon! Can't wait to try my favorite Guatemalan stews outside Guatemala!

E E.

Yelp
Terrible service. We were seated outside. Our order was taken by a woman with tattoos on her arm. Her customer service is TRASH. We didn't see her again. Another lady brought us our water and we sat there for 40 min waiting for our food. After 40 min OF WAITING we decided to leave the restaurant.

Yelp
First time coming but it will not be the last it's so good the food was good portions for a good price . The service was excellent will bring the family next time . If you want a good place to enjoy a good meal dont think twice and come to this restaurant.
google avatar

Emerson M.

Yelp
Let me tell you a very small restaurant but don't let the size fool you food is very good. I got a mixta and am antigua breakfast.
google avatar

Klzlad D.

Yelp
Really liked this place it's small but well set up. Service was good. Everything we ordered was delicious especially the bean and chips I had to order a second one they were so good! Only bad part is there's no parking. But I will be coming back to try the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
Arrived early; CS a bit harsh at our arrival, coffee was a delay. Pre breakfast snack of black beans and chip topped with cheese delicious. Finally coffee arrived, only cream no substitute sugar. Ultimately food arrived it was great, salsa good. Good place to eat not overly servings.

Jhannin C.

Yelp
Waitress sat us outside and unattended. I had to go inside to ask for a menu. We sat there for about 10 minutes and she never came out to take our order or check in. So we left. HORRIBLE SERVICE!
google avatar

Carlos L.

Yelp
This is an authentic Guatemalan food restaurant, the food is delicious and they have a variety of Guatemalan dishes, I had Pepian and was the best Pepian ever, the tortillas are hand made right on the spot.
google avatar

Andrew F.

Yelp
The waitress was not that friendly and we ordered on the phone ahead of time and then we were waiting and still no food people then came and got their food the instant they came and the food was great but the service wasn't great
google avatar

Deysi S.

Yelp
This is one of the best places I've eat Guatemalan food. The portions were huge two people can easily eat from one meal. The flavors were on point, it brought back so many memories of my childhood. Our server was wonderful and showed great customer service.
google avatar

Miguel G.

Yelp
I had the chicharrón with fried yuca, which was fantastic. The chicharrón was a little tougher than I expected, but still good. The fried yuca was perfect. I was disappointed that they had run out of horchata, but the agua de tamarindo was wonderful. Service was good, though the TV high off in the corner playing some religious telethon was annoying. Prices were reasonable for LA. I would definitely go here again.
google avatar

Gladys P.

Yelp
I usually do not write reviews but this restaurant is really worth doing this is one of my favorite restaurants the food has the magical flavor of gustemala I can enjoy each species that give that special touch to our Guatemalan dishes the mole de platano dessert is extraordinary i wasn't found on any Guatemalan restaurant that original touch of my country without a doubt highly recommend it
google avatar

Jonathan D.

Yelp
Outstanding pupusas, stews, and chicken dishes, all authentic home style. Delicious and much better for you than a Tex Mex meal. Homemade thick tortillas with sides of beans, pupusa slaw, and rice. We're coming back! Welcoming and professional service.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Where should I start?!?! I don't usually write reviews but this was so upsetting I had to! The woman at the register had attitude from the get go, there was no AC in there and it was hotter than hell. Then for a little hole in the wall that is NOT in Larchmont charging $3.50 for a tamal which was beyond DISGUSTING! It was full of flavorless masa the meat was hard and chewy and it didn't even have all the ingredients that go into the tamales. This was the worst tamales I've ever had!

Yelp
We were so happy with our long overdue visit to this small mostly Guatemalan and Salvadoran neighborhood eatery. We stopped in on a Friday night to find several tables filled with happily dining families, and were immediately made to feel super welcome and sit where we liked. Our server was great, and the food was excellent! We got cheese pupusas and yuca frita con chicharron, pretty much our go to (usually I get pupusas con loroco but sadly they don't offer that at this time, fingers crossed maybe in the future!) for any new Salvadoran destination. Amazing fresh chips with the most garlicky delicious black beans were also brought to the table and might have been my favorite part of the meal, which is saying a lot because the whole meal was wonderful!! Curtido was also super fresh and excellent!! We also spied a generous order of garnachas at the table next to us that looked mouth watering. I think the meat-eating Mr. will have to give those a taste next time. Needless to say, we will definitely be back. We live very close by and I'm so glad this place is finding a good home in the area! Give it a try, you won't be sorry!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Garnachas to die for! Carne asada is so flavorful and not dry like most places. Their beans are so delicious and made to perfection. Try their agua de piña. Yum!!! Staff is very friendly. Feels like your having lunch with family. They get to know their regulars. This location is about 25 minutes from where i live, and I rather drive to them than to eat at the locations around the corner from my house. Keep up the great work!
google avatar

Yelp
I have to admit this is a very good place to have a homemade food! By far one of my new favorite places too go too. The service was incredible and the owner was the sweetest lady ever. Thanks Aracely!!!

Yelp
I went today for some breakfast with two other people .first time ever and probably last ,space way to tiny.today may 13,2018 they had a guy doing karaoke way too loud for early morning and a tiny place.this place has only one person doing the orders, bringing you drinks, food ,cleaning tables, and taking payments. No wonder I waited for food for ever ,the food so so but don't go there if your really hungry the wait too long .

Marta A.

Yelp
Services was very rude, I ordered revolcado and Pupusas ,the Pupusas were good but the revolcado had no other flavor than salt. For the price I'll definitely go to the guatemalteca in Santa Monica witch has better flavors .

Matthew L.

Yelp
This fall/winter, when you are sick and in need of healing, get yourself some Caldo de Gallina here and all will be healed. Have tried probably a dozen Caldos de Pollo o Gallina in K Town and this one is the best. Best chicken, best array of finely cut veggies, best accompanying arroz, best tortillas. Great service. Hard to spot and honestly walked by here countless times without realizing it was a legit restaurant. Don't let the humble exterior fool you.

Gissele P.

Yelp
Love all the way from VA! Family was craving authentic Guatemalan food so we stumbled upon Casa Chapina and it was DELICIOUS! Everything that I've tried at home was right in this lil family owned restaurant. Wish I could fly there every time I craved it! Warm welcome and amazing food.

Kiwi F.

Yelp
this is the best Guatemalan food !!! I am half Guatemalan and the food taste authentic too. Reminds me when my family cooks. I highly recommend going here you won't regret it. They give you black beans with tortilla chips as an appetizer with some chilies on the side. They have refreshments such as pineapple juice, horchata, and etc. They're not too sweet it is just right.

Molly G.

Yelp
Love coming here with my family! Food is great, very small and cute and clean family restaurant.

L G.

Yelp
I can't even put my love of this place in words. The service, the food, just everything. I want to bathe in the their beans. And the only decent plantains I can find in LA. Their entire breakfast menu is incredible. This place is a serious hidden underrated gems. One of my favorite breakfasts in LA.

Jt L.

Yelp
This is the best Guatemalian food in town. The lady with the revolcado got issues. La guatemalteca vende comida fria. To each their own.

Kenia R.

Yelp
I love the garnachas and the rellenitos!! Food is always great and so is the service! If your looking for authentic guatemalan food go here! You won't be disappointed. Thank you to everyone at this place for always providing amazing food and service! Go check them out!
