The Spaniard, One of NYC’s Buzziest Bars, Will Pop Up in Houston | Eater Houston

"A West Village whiskey-focused bar that opened in spring 2017, conceived by Bua Bar Group and offering inventive bar snacks overseen by PJ Calapa (formerly of Ai Fiori and Nobu). It’s launching a multi-city U.S. tour that kicks off in Houston on November 7 and continues to Washington, D.C.; Louisville; Chicago; and Miami, timed to coincide with the one-year anniversary of a Compass Box whisky release. The takeover spotlights a signature malt blend finished in Spanish red wine, sherry, and virgin French oak barrels, and features cocktails such as a Manhattan made with Averna amaro and orange bitters, a “Fast Buck” combining lime, ginger, P.X. sherry, and Peat Monster, plus shot-and-beer pairings." - Tierney Plumb

We had the pleasure of celebrating my cousin’s civil wedding here with our family, and it was absolutely wonderful! The atmosphere is fantastic, the food is delicious, and the service is exceptional. A special shoutout to Rigoberto, who was attentive to every detail, making sure everything went perfectly and that we all left with unforgettable memories. If you want to have a great time, don’t hesitate to come here, Rigoberto will be there to take care of you and make your experience truly special!

Been going to this restaurant since I lived in Pembroke Pines years ago and recently revisited after many years. The quality of the food has declined a bit, but still satisfying. The service, food and atmosphere is great. I highly recommend ordering the ham croquettes! They are creamy, crispy and savory!

We came to Casa España Tapas y Vinos after seeing it all over TikTok, and let me tell you, my taste buds went on a vacation, but my patience went on a permanent business trip. First, the good stuff! The moment we walked in, I felt like I needed to check my passport. The place is drop-dead gorgeous—it's like they plucked a Spanish villa and dropped it right here. Then came the food. The garbanzo frito con jamon Serrano was a crispy, salty dream. I'm pretty sure I heard angels singing. And the paella con camarones? A masterpiece. It was so flavorful and loaded with shrimp that it felt less like a meal and more like a treasure chest. We finished with the crema Catalana, and it was so good it almost brought a tear to my eye. My wife was in heaven. The chef deserves a standing ovation and maybe a statue. Now for the not-so-good, which I'll call the "Rigoberto Experience." Our waiter, Rigoberto, was like a ninja—he appeared, took our order, and then vanished into thin air. We didn't see him again until we had to send out a search party (a.k.a. another waiter) to bring us the check. My water glass was emptier than my wallet after that meal, and it was the kindness of strangers (other waiters) that kept me from perishing of thirst. It's a shame, because everything else was top-tier. So, would I go back? For the food, absolutely. But next time, I'm bringing a camel with me for the water and a flare gun to signal for the check. Rigoberto, if you're reading this, please come back. My water glass misses you.

Excellent Spanish hidden gem in Pembroke Pines! The Tempranillo paired beautifully with the entrecot and the seafood dish. Waiter was polite and professional.

Enjoyed an incredible dinner at Casa España! From the moment we stepped inside, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. The food was outstanding, we had the jamon iberico croquettes, garbanzos fritos and seafood paella and it was one of the best meals we've had in a while. Desserts are made in house (congrats to Paco!!) and our server David was super attentive. While the prices were a bit higher, the quality of the food and service made it well worth the splurge. Taking into account that we both had drinks (sangria was very good) and desserts (totally recommend the turron mousse and tarta de Santiago) the bill was not that expensive. Highly recommend for a special occasion or anyone looking for a truly memorable dining experience!

Great experience!! Paco at the bar was amazing! Christian was our server and he was super professional. The happy hour was a great deal. Tapas, sangria and the atmosphere were very good! We will definitely come back!

Google
Had such a great time at Casa España Tapas. The food was excellent, but what really stood out was the service. David was our server and he was outstanding — super kind, attentive, and genuinely made sure we were enjoying everything. He explained the dishes well and kept things flowing without ever feeling rushed. Service like that makes you want to come back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I called this restaurant to make a reservation for a group of 20, and the entire experience felt confusing, disorganized, and completely lacking in structure. They explained that because their restaurant and kitchen are small, a party of 20 would take up half the space. That's understandable -- but instead of offering a normal large-party solution like a prefixed menu with a deposit, they told me I needed to come in the day before, let them know exactly what every person in the group would be ordering, and pay for everything upfront. Their reasoning was that they "wanted to secure their money" because large groups in the past didn't spend much. But then, when I asked if there was a minimum spending requirement per person or per party (which would actually make sense if money was their concern), they said no. So the entire policy had no logic behind it. If a restaurant truly wants to secure revenue for big groups, the standard, professional approach is simple: offer prefixed menu options and require a deposit. What they asked for instead -- forcing us to pre-order and prepay without any structured system, and without it even being a private event -- was honestly absurd. To make it worse, they told me they would not allow us to make the reservation at all unless we agreed to this. At that point, their attempt to "secure their money" did the opposite. We decided not to book with them, and they ended up losing the business entirely.

Yelp
We were disappointed. We have visited this restaurant numerous times in the past, with family and friends. It was our got to place for Spanish wine, food and a good time out in the area. The service and food were great. A+++ Well, not this time, we were trying to celebrate my wife's birthday and Francisco, at the bar, I believe, he was the manager, bartender and chef, immediately stopped me due to my medical service animal. I told him, not to worry, we were seating outside and all I wanted to know was if they could provide me with a candle for my wife's birthday. It was just the 3 of us trying to enjoy a romantic dinner. Apparently, he never understood that there is a law (ADA) for people with Disabilities in public places that require to be accompanied by a service animal. Assuming my animal was a pet, please keep in mind that we were seating outside. I proceeded to continue with our night since it was a special occasion and I did not want it to get ruined by external factors. We ordered the seafood wet rice; not bad, not great. The New York Steak, on the other hand, had too much trimming for the cut, making it hard to enjoy. Service was a bit slow but oddly enough, dinner and appetizer came out almost simultaneously, complicating the enjoyment of the experience. We sure hope management takes the necessary measures so that we can return to enjoy their service.

Yelp
Very nice spot! Decided to try it out as we wanted some snacks in between our shopping day and this place did not disappoint. They were very quick to seat us and serve us. We just did tapas and a Glass of their house wine. Everything was delicious. You must try their ham and manchego cheese. They bring out complimentary bread rolls warmed up and it was delicious. The patatas were addictive as well as their shrimp in garlic sauce. Definitely would like to come back to try more!

Yelp
Came into this location on a weekday for dinner expecting that the location was going to be packed. There was plenty of parking when we got there, and the restaurant was completely empty. As far as the service, I would say that it was OK and food came fairly quick . To start we had the octopus Which it's one of my top favorite foods, but this dish itself had no flavor and definitely was not my favorite. We also share the paella, which was good for two people. It had a lot of seafood, but once again was not very flavorful and it's not something I would order again from this location. Overall, with the food that we tried is not a location that I would recommend but I would maybe try again a different dish .

Yelp

Yelp
Amazing happy hour! The tapas were unreal, I wish I would've taken pics as they came out but I literally inhaled them. There's so many options, we got everything but the meatballs since they were sold out. The vibes are immaculate! We sat at the bar and got served immediately. I got the sangria and literally one of each appetizer, each $5... why isn't this place packed?! Monday to Friday 4pm to 7pm bar and patio seating for the happy hour. Unreal!

Arminda V.

Yelp
Everything we had was delicious!! Tortilla española with chorizo, pumpkin soup, anchovies and stuff pepper with cod fish

Yelp
A friend selected this restaurant for the tapas and drinks. They were too busy when we arrived for our reservation so we opted to sit at the bar. The restaurant is spacious and has plenty of seating. The server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered their red sangria and it had a different taste than I expected. I ultimately did not finish it, just sipped here and there. There weren't too many options for me to pick from on the tapas menu due to gluten. We ordered the Manchego Cheese Board and Ensaladilla Rusa. The cheese board was great and I enjoyed it. The Ensaladilla Rusa was a different story. I am a visual eater and it did not look appetizing and the texture was not doing it for me. Lovely restaurant. But not my type of food.

Yelp
This is the fourth time I visit this place and it never disappoints. We were seated within 2 minutes of arriving. Saturday around 4 pm. Parking is a bit tight because it's located in Pembroke gardens and that shopping center is always packed. I must say my wife's family is spanish and we enjoy a good spanish meal. Compared to food in Madrid this place meets quality and expectations. We had: Pulpo a la gallega: amazing, but different from fried octopus but totally worth it. Patatas bravas: potato with a sauce you just try Croquetas - ham: very good a bit pricey in my opinion for croquetas but they are very good Paella mixta: reason for the 4 stars. First time I don't like it as much, missing salt and flavor, I did let them know as the other times I've been there the paella has been good Stuffed peppers: I'm not a fan but my wife loved them stuffed with fish and she claims they were amazing For any beer fans I recommend you try Estrella de Galicia. Very unique flavor and it was a fave on my visits to Spain so it's great being able to have it here Service was very very good , we were served by Richard who was very nice and attentive to everything we needed.

Yelp
Service was extremely efficient, if not overly friendly. The server was there to do a job, and he did it very well. The food was well portioned; we split several tapas before our entrees, and there was plenty to go around. Everything was well presented and very tasty. The table delivery was timed perfectly. We were given the opportunity to appreciate each dish before the next one arrived. The quality of preparation matched the price, and all 4 in our party agreed that it was a very positive experience! We'll definitely return and recommend.

Yelp
Very good food Excellent service Reasonable prices for the food quality Ambiance good

Yelp
I dine there the other day with my wife, the place looks nice, there was live music, service was ok, but not really the best, but food was not really the what we spect, we order the Seafood and Langostinos Paella, but Langostinos have no flavor at all, looks like they are pre cooked, and added at the end, we also order a Sangria that test like it was mix with water, and the appetizer that was Pulpo a la Gallega, was a very small portion of sliced pieces, for the price, they may need to improve more in the kitchen.

Peter D.

Yelp
About 3 stars is right. Just go for tapas and likely will meet your expectations. Just being honest.

cheng S.

Yelp
The food was nice but the hostess is very rude and when I called for reservation the guy requires me to speak Spanish which is I don't know and I can't ; I don't think my comments is important to them. But I'm showing to others who wants to enjoy

Jorge C.

Yelp
If you're looking for good tapas and Spanish food, I don't recommend this establishment. The floor was sticky. The menus had a strange odor. The tapas menu is limited. The service was mid at best + the waiter seemed to be bothered by any questions/requests. Caldo Gallego was extremely salty, the tortilla Española I'm almost positive had been sitting out all day. Don't waste your money or your time.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Food was not good, the service was horrible waiter seemed bothered to be serving and answer questions regarding the menu. Ambiance was blah place was empty, that should've tipped me off the place wasn't good.
google avatar

Miguel P.

Yelp
An overpriced list of tapas that lack main ingredients. The tapas are served with a significant amount other than the main product (ex: too much sauce to make it look like a lot; too much pepper and just three gambas with a slide of tomatoes). The only one tapa that met expectations was the patatas bravas which for $11 honestly would not even try again. The ambiance did not present much of a memorable experience; although it was typical with a large number of customers. The staff although pleasant lack training. A simple thing as giving you the check instead of letting the customer take a moment to look at it without pressure was missed. The guy stood next to me waiting like a soldier. There is an opportunity to review the menu, train the servers, and maybe even designate someone in charge that check with all the tables to see how things are going.

Yelp
Food took too long to arrive, music was too loud and gave me a headache (coming from a Latina), got sick. Good luck

Victor L.

Yelp
We ordered a paella and it was the worst thing we have ever eaten, water with hard and flavorless rice. It shows that it changed ownership and this was a scam, Trader Joe's paella is 100% times better and it's frozen and they charge you $66 for something that really sucked. This was a good and delicious restaurant where I came with my family on special occasions but since the new manager arrived this became very bad because they spend the money on new chairs and terrace instead of spending it on a good meal. The new chef doesn't know how to cook. I'm really disappointed that they destroyed such a delicious restaurant. I'm never going back and I feel bad for the waitress because she knew what she was doing and was very kind.

Yelp
Great food, great service and great ambiance! Had a really nice meal here for lunch - we ordered several tapas & drinks and all was great! We will definitely go back!

Victor L.

Yelp
The food was really bad, we came a long time ago and the food had a very traditional flavor. we came back today and the food was disappointing, had no taste to it, the Paella had 0 flavor, the rice wasn't cooked, we had to add salt and olive oil to be able to eat it and be able to digest the food. very disappointed of this place, we used to come and celebrate special days with many people bringing new clients, but after eating today here and seeing how bad it has gotten i really don't recommend it to anyone. The service was decent, but it's not the service or how pretty the restaurant is, it's the chef that makes a restaurant good, and Casa España isn't it.

sophia l.

Yelp
The waiter took our order and an hour later had yet to bring our 2 paella orders although he had asked us twice about our paella order. When we asked how much longer it would take, he came to our table aggressively and told us we had never placed the order with him and spoke to us with a very high and condescending tone. It is unfortunate that he treats customers in that way and accuses them of being liars rather than finding a solution. We will be sure to never come back.
google avatar

Sharon F.

Yelp
I can't review much other than the poor service by the hostess at the door. Half of the restaurant was empty with plenty of tables available but because all the tables for 2 were taken, they rather us leave than use a table for 4 because we "didn't make a reservation" but the restaurant is half full. Quite confusing but good reflection of its admin. So, thank you, but no thank you. Taking our business somewhere savvier.

Eric G.

Yelp
Great service. Friendly staff. Perfect for lunch and dinner with friends and family. The sangria is home made and truly original. The croquettes are delicious. It's not in the menu, but you can order the croquettes as a combo to taste them all. Not a fan of the Spanish omelette though--i had better. The desserts are a good size and not too sugary. Visit and you won't regret it.

Glennys G.

Yelp
Paco eres el Mejor! Gracias por tan rica paella para llevar . La atención espectacular .

Mariah R.

Yelp
The food here is very authentic and tasty (I am from Spain) but the service is deplorable. Rude and incompetent. Had to remind the waitress about our order twice. Also, she literally brought one glass of wine at a time to our table of 5. Such a shame because the ambience is lovely and it's difficult to find authentic Spanish cuisine here.

Laura P.

Yelp
a normal service! but the food was terrible, we arrived at night and our dishes arrived cold, many looked like they had been leftovers from the day. They charged us 22 dollars for a plate full of potatoes and two pieces of octopus. really zero pleasant experience. the glasses where they served the water smelled bad

Terri S.

Yelp
Today I noticed as reservation email telling me that my reservation had been canceled. I never made any reservations to a restaurant I looked up on google to see where this restaurant was. My bank had told me to call the restaurant to see who made the reservations because it was sent to my personal email. So I called a man picked up I told him what had happened and I just wanted to see how this happened that a reservation was made by me when I never ever been to the restaurant or set a reservation up, the guy hung up on me. I called a few times after and he still hung up on me so that makes me very suspicious about this restaurant. All I wanted to find out who did it because maybe now there could be identity theft. Now my family and I will never ever go to this restaurant. We love Spanish food and because of the man who is highly rude by kept hanging up on me, we decided this is not a restaurant that we will ever check out. Now I need to look into who used my identity to make a reservation at this restaurant.

Yolanda H.

Yelp
the food was way overpriced for what you get.. first of all, they don't have half of the things on the menu. we ordered the Rabo de Toro. it was good but small amount and very fatty. we ordered potatoes for our ONE side, $36 and they gave us Oreida, French fries.. on top of it all the waiter had a terrible attitud. so we won't go back!!
