After our third visit to Casa Italiana, we could no longer hold back on sharing our honest thoughts about our experience here, particularly with the owner and staff.
Our first visit was extremely enjoyable, with a wonderful server who was polite, professional and very knowledgeable about the menu. We enjoyed what we ordered, despite being slightly disappointed to learn that the pasta dish prepared in the cheese wheel, was only available on nights when the owner was there to prepare it. This gave us pause, as we have had this dish before at a restaurant in Northern Virginia, where every waiter on staff knew how to prepare it. It is not overly complicated in its preparation, so it seems very odd for the owner to not teach the entire waitstaff how to prepare the dish.
Therefore, on our second visit, we made sure to call beforehand and ask if the owner was there so we could order the cheese wheel pasta. While she was there and did make it for us, it was not the presentation that we were promised by our waiter, which is one of the cool things about ordering this dish. They are supposed to roll the cheese wheel out on a table and cook it right in front of you, making it a fun and entertaining experience, one that gets your mouth watering and excited to eat what's being prepared in front of you. Instead, the owner was across the restaurant at a small table, preparing the dish, with her back to us so we couldn't see a thing as she prepared it. She then brought the dish over and plopped it on the table, no different than if it had just been brought back from the kitchen. Not remotely the experience we were expecting. The dish was also just sub par, and not getting to see how it was prepared, we had no idea what had gone into it and why it lacked the cheesy, creamy deliciousness like the one we had in Dulles, Virginia. So we shared our experience with the owner and told her how much we had enjoyed the one in Northern Virginia, hoping that maybe next time, if we came back and tried it again, it might be more like what we had experienced there.
We specifically knew that we had family coming into town in the coming weeks, and that we might like to bring them there for dinner to try the cheese wheel pasta. We asked the owner if she would be there on a specific date, to which she told us she would be, and we then made a reservation to come back on that date.
That date was this past Saturday. When we arrived for our reservation, the owner was behind the bar, and abruptly came over and told us she would not be making the cheese wheel pasta because she had to work behind the bar. She was rude, unapologetic, and then seated us in the corner in the bar area, instead of the larger dining area upstairs, when we had a reservation, and had a larger party with our out of town guests. We reiterated that the whole reason we came that night was because we were told she would be there and could make the pasta dish with the full experience of the prep and presentation, but she just flatly said she could not do it and there were plenty of other good items on the menu. We then even reminded her that we had specifically brought our out of town guests in to try that specific dish, yet she still refused. If it hadn't been almost 8pm, we would have left and gone somewhere else. Our server was also pretty abrupt and flat, not friendly and engaging like the server we had on our first visit. The food was just mediocre, and after this experience, we will not return.
This restaurant is overly hyped and the attitude of the owner is arrogant and rude, falling very short of the high quality experience they claim to deliver. The interior space lacks ambiance and is in major need of an overhaul, with the leather booth and seats old, worn and badly peeling. The food is not so amazing that you can overlook all these things. You can get good Italian food at many other places in the area. I know we will not be back and will tell others of our experience here and suggest they go elsewhere.
