Yelp
context, we had a long drive from Houston to McAllen and were really looking forward to our stop at Casa Madre. It was one of the must-try places for our group, so expectations were high. Unfortunately, the experience did not match the hype.
Service:
Our drinks took a long time to arrive. My agua de Jamaica showed up before the water I asked for. A friend ordered a flavored water that did not arrive until much later, and when it finally did, the presentation did not match everyone else's. When we asked, another waiter brushed it off with "es la pura ilusión óptica," which felt dismissive and unnecessary.
Our server kept disappearing, and every time we asked for something, he walked away before the rest of the table could say anything. Simple things like refills and extra utensils took more than one reminder.
Food:
The salsa arrived late and needed salt.
A friend's molcajete never stopped boiling. It was so hot she kept burning herself trying to eat it. One shrimp was even stuck to the molcajete.
I ordered the papa asada featured on their TikTok, since it was not on the menu. The physical menu is outdated and the QR did not load because the WiFi and signal were both poor. What I received was basically mashed potatoes stuffed inside a potato shell. Not horrible, not great, just okay.
I also asked for chives and specifically wanted the green part. I was served the thick white bulb pieces instead. Not the end of the world, but in Texas most places get this right, so it stood out.
Atmosphere and logistics:
We did not have a reservation, and it definitely showed. The energy from the staff made it feel like we were an inconvenience.
The WiFi was bad and the cell signal was not any better, which matters when the menu is QR only.
The payment terminals were down. It was not a major issue, but it made checkout less smooth than expected.
Management presence:
Several staff members and managers eventually came to the table, which made it obvious they knew service was off. Still, no one asked how things were going. They were mostly dropping items off.
Overall:
Overhyped and overpriced for the experience we had. The food was not the worst, but nothing justified the wait or the prices. Honestly, the best part of the visit was the laughter we shared over how chaotic the whole experience was. Casa Madre has potential, but our visit missed the mark.
