Asturias Is the Unsung Spanish Vacation Destination You Need to Visit This Year

"A prime example was the restaurant Casa Marcial, which I first visited in the late 1990s when its chef-patron Nacho Manzano had not long been in charge of the rustic bar/shop/eatery previously run by his parents in the hamlet of La Salgar—and which now has three Michelin stars."

Casa Marcial

"Ably assisted by two of his sisters (Esther often helps out in the kitchen while Sandra works front of house), Nacho Manzano invites you on a creative culinary voyage back to his origins, his roots, the land of his birth, as he draws on the flavours of Asturias. In a stunning, remote location surrounded by mountains, Casa Marcial is much more than a restaurant; it bears witness to the close bond the chef forged with his environment during his childhood. Passion, respect, love and a dedication to hospitality all make their presence felt in the à la carte selection (signature dishes of the house) and the tasting menus ("Pienzu" and "Vega"), both of which focus on exquisite produce sourced in the Cantabrian Sea and in the immediate vicinity in a bid to support rural development. The fish is cooked to perfection!" - Michelin Inspector

Great culinary experience in the middle of Asturias less known countryside. The restaurant combines modernity and classic elements in the architecture. The interior atmosphere is elegant, welcoming and with rustic elements. The service is attentive and flexible (two of us could enjoy the tasting menu while the other three chose a la carte). The dishes have a good balance between the local/traditional recipes & ingredients and modern elements and presentations. The only minus is that the place is very remote with a challenging access road (especially when it rains hard or there is fog) so unless you hire a car service or you have a generous designated (and experienced) driver, you will not be able to get the full gastronomic experience with wine.

My wife and I had an amazing experience at Casa Marcial. So much that its become our favorite michelin star restaurant so far! Located in a very beautiful area of Asturias near Arriondas and their parking lot has really nice views of the land and mountains. Every single dish wash super delicious and had a very elegant presentation. The wine pairing was fantastic and the sommelier did a superb job explaining the wines and how they complemented the dish we were about to enjoy. We did the fitu menu and next time we are there we will do the el cachucho. We loved the patio they had outside where we ended the night with some delicious coffee and really tasty sweets.

First things first, the food was really good and highlighted some classic dishes from Asturias such as Croquetas, Pitu, Bonito, Cheese, etc. My biggest disappointment were 2 things: 1. We mentioned a shellfish allergy on the reservation and even when we sat down. Two minutes later and the first appetizers include shellfish. They apologized and brought a different course. BUT 3 courses later, another dish that included the allergen. This behavior is not acceptable at a 2 star Michelin restaurant. 2. It was noted on the reservation by my partner that it was a milestone birthday. Not even a happy birthday received at any point during the meal. Very disappointed as we traveled from the US to this small village to celebrate a milestone and it was just ignored! Do not recommend and will not return

Absolutely amazing meal! Every dish was top tier. The staff was very friendly. The location is beautiful. Nacho and his sisters are making some amazing representations of traditional Asturian food. The sommelier (Juan Luis) had prepared some exquisite pairings that are worth the extra money, they truly elevate the dishes.

PERFECT BLEND OF TRADITION AND AVANTGARDE. Casa Marcial is run by chef Nacho Manzano and his sisters. They transformed their parents' humble eatery into a two-Michelin-star restaurant. Its scenic rural setting provides a stunning visual context for Nacho's cuisine, which is firmly grounded in Asturian traditions. His creations are not all that experimental but rather coherent and personal. There are two menus, which differ in size and concept. Prices are moderate, given the restaurant's superb quality. The longer menu costs €165 per person, and the shorter one €110. Wine pairing adds €65 and €50, respectively. For dinner, there's also a lighter menu for €80. While some dishes are more convincing than others, the overall experience is amazing. And the desserts are out of this world.

Overrated. The food, the restaurant and the locations are all exquisite. But for two michelin stars i was expecting something more in the way of creativity or new flavors. I missed the wow effect. Generous parking space. Note: i was misled by google maps, casa marcial is NOT in arriondas.

Absolutely excellent - innovative, delicious and diverse dishes, excellent service and a spectacular drinks pairing. Amazing local ingredients. The roasted sweet potato/peaches and cream were truly wonderful along with the squid with mole and haddock&green beans - stand out dishes. Special thanks to the sommelier, one of the most perfect pairings imaginable with unique ciders, saki, riesling and very aged rioja - wow. Very good value considering other 2* comparisons. A clear rival of Coque in Madrid but 1/3 the price!

Yelp
I have been to Casa Marcial before, and this is a must go to every time we are in Asturias. It's an experience, not just a meal. What I love about this restaurant, besides the AMAZING food and wine pairings, are the helpful, not stuffy staff. This visit we took a friend, who had never experienced a tasting menu, and she loved it as well. And unlike other fine dining Michelin restaurants, Chef changes the menu. You can order a la carte the staples - fabada & pitu rice (DO SO - these can't be missed), but the menu is very much the season, and what the land provides. Wine pairings are unique and accompany the meal perfectly. I know we'll be back next year.
