Best Dishes Eater NY Editors Ate This Week: October 21 - Eater NY

"With the crown for best tacos in Bushwick typically residing on the head of Nenes or perhaps Taqueria Al Pastor, Casa Maya sits rather hidden on Myrtle Avenue, offering two birria tacos and a side of consomé for $12. The corn tortillas are perfectly fried and crispy, and the cheese provides just as much flavor as structural integrity." - Eater Staff

Though the restaurant store front is being visually blocked by the M train construction, it was a great pleasure to venture into this spot. The spicy margaritas were phenomenal and the guacamole yum yum. I highly recommend taking a moment to check this spot when in Brooklyn. Being a bartender in the city, on my day off, this place was exactly what I needed... I gotta say, Juan has me on his Margarita.. definitely worth it. Cheers.

We stumbled upon Casa Maya while trying to fix a late night taco craving. The interior is quaint, yet cozy and inviting, and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. We were seated immediately and given the menu. The menu isn't expansive, but covers all that one would need in a place like this. We started off with the chips and guacamole which is served in what I think is a fried tortilla bowl. It was FANTASTIC! The chips were fresh and perfectly crispy. We ate the entire appetizer, including the tortilla bowl. For entrees, we opted to try four different tacos, all of which were nothing short of fantastic. We got chicken, baja fish, carnitas (pork) and birria. Of the four, the standouts were definitely the carnitas and the fish. They just had something extra in them that made them top tier. The size of the tacos were about standard, and they were all very filling, and very fairly priced. My date opted to only have water, while I had a cocktail featuring gin, prosecco and other ingredients. I don't remember the name but it was very good. The other cocktails on the menu looked good as well, but I only had one. When I return I'll be sure to try more. Service was very speedy and professional. The staff was always around in case of questions, and the food came out super fast. The only reason that didn't give this establishment 5 stars is because I think the interior could use a bit of an upgrade. It was a little too plain for my taste. It could be the look/vibe that they're going for, which isn't a bad thing at all. But I think they could add some lights or artwork on the walls. That's just a personal thing, and it definitely doesn't take away from anything else previously mentioned. Overall, this is definitely a great spot for a date, quick bite, or even some drinks after work to unwind and hang out. Although it's far from where I reside in Westchester, I'm definitely planning to come back and try their other offerings. Highly recommended by yours truly

I’d like to preface this by saying I will be contacting my attorney based off the racial discrimination I faced from this restaurant. Whether or not my colleagues will do the same is up to them. To say I’m disappointed in this place is an understatement. I came here with a group of friends happy and ready to spend money for a birthday in the group. We come into the restaurant and mind you the atmosphere isn’t bad but we are greeted by a waiter who looked like he’s already had enough of us even though we just walked in. (we aren’t loud in the slightest) Anyway, he seats us and we ask to split the bill in two (there are 7 of us so we wanted to tell him before hand). He has an attitude the whole time taking our order and once he does finish he goes to put the order in I guess then comes back 20 minutes later asking us to close out and pay… before the food even got there?(all we had gotten at this point was water and chips which are customary and complimentary when you order) I went to ask two friendly Caucasian women if they were asked to do the same and they told me no especially since the restaurant closes at 4am and we had gotten there around 9/10pm. So being that it’s a group of black and brown individuals in our 20s they felt we couldnt pay and wanted to close us out before even tasting the food. Ridiculous and Racist. Not to mention the guy ( I’m guessing the owner/boss) passed by our table on the bottom floor upwards of 4 times just to watch us. When we realized what happened we got up left. We refused to spend any money at this establishment and if you are darker then a paper bag you should too.

We had a delicious dinner (chicken quesadilla and chicken burrito) and house margaritas at Casa Maya. Happy hour deals are pretty good and go relatively late. The restaurant vibe is nice too. We’d definitely go back if in the area

I was searching some Mexican spots in the area, noticed this place was open and decided to call ahead if I could still get a table for 4. It said online they were open till 12am but I also work at a very popular restaurant in Manhattan so I know kitchens probably close earlier. A guy answered and let me know that the kitchen closes at 11:30 (it was around 10:15pm) and I could still get a table. I let him know I'd be going in 20 mins. Once entering, there's no sign outside so I entered asking "Hey What's this place called? Are you guys still open" (assuming I entered the right place, which I did). A guy doing nothing didn't even make eye contact with me and said "We're closed" so I was like "Okay... What is the placed called" and he was like "I don't know" with a lot of attitude. I added a photo of the guy that spoke to me because it was just so ridiculous when there was still a couple sat with food. Why would you say on the phone I could still get a table if you're going to reject me at the door? This place is definitely not going far with that attitude. For a place that seems like a clubby spot based on their social media, you would think I could get a table since I called prior.

Awesome place! Got there late right before closing & was able to place a food order 10s across the board for that because the kitchen was closed. Food 10/10 Drinks 10/10 Music 10/10 Customer Service 10/10. Overall nice chill spot definitely will go again.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick drink on our way out for a show, the inside is very clean, friendly staff, and well priced for the city. We ordered two margaritas and they were flavorful and packed quite the kick in the best way. We even were provided free chips and salsa with our drinks which was a great touch, the chips were freshly made and hot when they came out too.

Yelp
The BEST steak tacos. Wish i was kidding when i say I'm there twice a week just ordering mad tacos, guac & frozen passion fruit margs. Some of the best service I've experienced in a long time.

Yelp
Great food and quick service. The place is kinda tight and it can use a little facelift, but the food compensated for it.

Yelp
Sometimes all you need is a good taco and great company! The second night in NYC found out one of my friends was working at a Mexican-style bar and restaurant called Casa Maya, so I decided to check it now out. Honestly had no idea what to expect from the area but was pleasantly surprised and welcomed by the environment! A fantastic bartender greets you, seating is open at the bar, and there are tall boys for tables as well. On the second floor, there is a lounge area and a modest dance floor, and space for DJ. The DJ that night was dope and got the dance floor bouncing. Shout outs to the bartender Mel that night, who made an amazing margarita which she dubbed a "Melgerita" if she is bartending, and you should most definitely try. Regarding food, I got classic steak and chicken tacos with onions and Cilantro, which were perfect for me. My friends got the chicken Burrito bowl, corn, and Taco De Birria which came with soup for dipping the Tacos. It was all so good and was just the right amount to dance for the rest of the evening. Overall, it's a cute, chill environment with some good food. If you are in the area and want some vibes with some decent tacos, give Casa Maya a shot. 4 out of 5

Yelp
Steak Tacos & The Quesadilla Are Phenomenal. Great Price On Drinks & Great Ambiance & Service.

Yelp
The food & drinks were both good, however everything is a bit pricy ($5-$7 for a taco). I got a steak quesadilla which was really good and a decent size for the price. The salsas were also amazing. I had a side of rice and beans and the beans were just not good at all, I barely touched them. We also ordered appetizers but didn't get them until the main dishes came out and the chips were cold.

Yelp
Wow, first time eating from this place and it won't be the last. I had the steak tacos and my boyfriend had the vegetarian tacos. All the ingredients were super fresh. The steak in the tacos was so tender it melted in my mouth and my boyfriend said the veggies were seasoned really well. The shells on both tacos were perfectly crispy, perfect for dipping in the Birria soup. Also, put the green sauce on EVERYTHING it is amazing! They haven't fully opened up (damn you COVID) but they are available for pick up and delivery. I can only imagine how popular this place will be once indoor dining is available.

Yelp
This is the best new Taco spot around, hands down. The food is freshly made to order, everything is superb! The staff pack the to go deliveries neatly and with care. Highly recommended Casa Maya if you are looking for the best quality authentic mexican cuisine, at great affordable prices from a couple of local Brooklyn professionals.

Yelp
Really good, just ordered from here for delivery and is tasty . Good portion as well. Delivery was fast too Food came warm not room temperature and not saggy taking in consideration that is tacos. I ordered the birria tacos , birria dipping soup/sauce and is the first time I tried it. I've been wanting to have Tacos de Birria for a lil while now and maybe my expectations were a lil too high I was probably expecting something way out of this world, although I'm not disappointed either. Overall was really good, I also ordered the chicken quesadilla and it was delicious.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican deliciousness, came here with friends and tried the fish, shrimp, and birria tacos, all came with homemade tortillas, fresh pico de gallo and tasted just amazing!

Yelp
Worst place to order from via any phone app. They will just keep saying the order is ready in 10 minutes and the driver will never show.

Louis P.

Yelp
Their Taco de Berea is the bomb I recommend you guys order here if you want some authentic Mexican taco/burrito order right now!! What are you waiting for!!

Alexa J.

Yelp
The tacos, guacamole and chips were good. I was expecting the $5 tacos to come w/ more than 1 (small one) - my only complaint since it makes the food a little pricey. But the guac & chip price is worth it. Good food.

Yelp
I'm not really one to leave reviews much, and it makes me sad to do this. I have ordered from casa maya on ubereats RELIGIOUSLY for the past few months because I loved their birria tacos & consome. Im going to cut straight to the chase, I found a dead roach in my consome. I can't even attach the photo because it makes my stomach turn. Im sad and disappointed, their food was great but I really can't go back after that lol.

Robert S.

Yelp
It was excellent. The Taco De Borra was so good, we ordered another one for seconds. Definitely will return.

Yelp
I've already ordered from this place twice in the last week after discovering it on Grubhub! The prices are reasonable and the consome de birria is INCREDIBLE. 10/10 recommend

Yelp
I came here on b day! Vibes were amazing. Went a second time with a fried 10 minutes after the kitchen closed and the owner was the sweetest offered drinks in the house and told the kitchen to make us tacos. I loved it here!

Aaliyah V.

Yelp
This place is not only good for food but there drinks are to die for. I come here often with friends and I Birria tacos and they taste great 10/10. Also there service is great Jamal is one of the best bartenders alive .... Highly recommended not to mention it's black owned

Yelp
I live nearby and love to order regularly now, quality Mexican food which sometimes isn't always the case ! I love the bc fish tacos and nachos. Quick and kind service.

Yelp
This place is spot on. Delicious food, great portion sizes, friendly staff. Definitely recommend this place, especially the Birria tacos. :)
