Where To Eat When You’re Visiting Madrid - Madrid - The Infatuation

"This former railway warehouse-turned-restaurant with sky-high ceilings and walls lined with sidra bottles and wooden barrels is a Madrid institution, and the reason why is the salty roast chicken and Asturian cider. The menu is short and sweet, with things like pollo asado (you’ll see the rotisserie chickens turning on spits as you walk in), spicy chorizo marinated in sidra, one of the most famous dishes hailing from the northerly Asturias region, and stinky Cabrales blue cheese. We love attempting the iconic Asturian pour, where you hold the bottle high in the air and your glass down below so the drink aerates, praying most of it doesn’t land on the floor—you’ll see puddles of cider everywhere, so don’t worry if you miss. This place is perfect for those who want to eat good food and have an energetic experience without fussing over reservations or complicated ordering." - lori zaino

We went early on a Monday lunchtime and by the time we left it was full. Large traditional open-plan restaurant, founded in 1888. We started with the cider flavoured chorizo, country bread and a bottle of cider. The whole roast chicken which followed was as good as promised and at the end we made room for the excellent desserts; cheesecake and grandmother's chocolate cake.

Google
The toast chicken is most speical food in the restaurant. It tastes a little bit of salty on the surface of chicken, inside is more lightly. About the dessert, the cider cake is fantastic one than others.

Although it seemed to be busy and we didn't have a reservation, we got a table within a 3 minutes. My experience: Very friendly staff, Delicious food with a great taste, Friendly employees and atmosphere, Decent amount of food, They don't serve fries but a bag of crisps/chips instead, Can be a bit laud but that's okay, It has an unique style, The waiters service was good even though they forgot to give me a salad I ordered. After having finished the meal I wanted to drink a coffee but unfortunately they don't sell it.

Google
I had the roasted chicken at Casa Mingo, and it was absolutely amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked—crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It’s a simple dish but done exceptionally well. We truly enjoyed the meal and the cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for great food in Madrid!

Google
We visited Casa Mingo and had a mixed experience. The ham platter wasn’t the best, and the bread was quite dry, but the roast chicken was absolutely incredible, definitely the highlight of the meal. The service was a bit slow, but nothing too frustrating. We also tried the natural cider, which was very nice and added a unique touch to the experience. Worth a visit, especially for the chicken!

Google
Delicious roasted chicken, best meat I've had in Madrid. Also very affordable. Incredibly fast service despite the restaurant being completely packed when we were there. They forgot my salad but I'm happy because the bread and full chicken was more than enough. Bread is a bit crispy but great with the chicken sauce. They have no coffee or fries which surprised me. The Arroz con Leche was good too.

Google
Wow! What an experience. We started with the salad, the bread, lacón, and sidra! What a great way to freshen our pallets and get ready for the delicious chicken. The chicken was SUCCULENT! Many have recommended this place to us, and we can understand why. We even saw a waitstaff conduct a really cool trick baseball bat hitting a cork into the trash can from like 5 meters away with a wine bottle. Super impressive! Loved the experience… will be back!

Google
Of all the restaurants I’ve been to in Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid, I had the best experience at Casa Mingo. - Our waiter, Alvaro, was incredibly friendly. He described the items we ordered and verified that everything was to our liking. - The chicken was nothing short of perfection. Well-priced with a large enough serving for 2 people and incredibly flavorful. Would recommend 10/10. - The cider was a great cultural experience. Alvaro showed us how to properly pour it — high above your glass. You need to try it if you come here!

Yelp
I can see why others are raving about this place- soft and tender cider braised roasted chicken, strong cheese, and cider that hits. It's definitely off the beaten path and if you want to take a break from fried options that are everywhere, or the variety of paella and seafood options- head here. You won't find many tourists unless they are in the know, and that means a family operation that knows what they are doing, gives you just what your tastebuds need without any unnecessary flair - simple, well prepared and delicious food at a price that can't be beat. By the way- sitting at a table (as others have said) does increase the price point a bit versus standing at the bar...but this is a meal you want to sit and savor every morsel of while feeling smug that you are in the know!

Yelp
This was the very best meal I had during my trip to Madrid. This is an old restaurant from the 1800s and their speciality is chicken and cider. It is a glorious roast chicken here, so good that is requires no additional sides. The chicken was so buttery, tender, and flavorful with perfectly crispy skin. I could have peeled the skins off a 100 chickens and ate them, they were that delicious. And the meat was like butter, it fell off the bone. These chickens must have been raised on the best farms because never in my life have I tasted chicken this good. The cider was interesting! They have a sweet one which tastes like a regular hard cider, and a "natural" one which is very dry and not sweet at all. I'm not a big cider fan but I could tell that this cider was very high quality, and my partner loved it. Every time I am back in Madrid, a stop at Casa Mingo for dinner will absolutely happen.

Yelp
The chicken was the best i have ever had i want 20 more jk like 300 more. It was even good after reheated

Yelp
El pollo no es nada especial. La ensaladilla rusa estaba bien y las croquetas son lo único que estaba excelente. No creo que volvería. El restaurante en general aunque es un estilo rústico necesita una buena limpieza. El servicio fue muy bueno.

Yelp
How can anyone rate casa mingo less than 5 stars? It's next to the church where Francisco Goya is interred. And it's been a local mainstay since the 1800's. Best rotisserie chicken and cider. Try the cider cake. And their cocido on special occasions. A lot of people get frustrated waiting in the long queue, most not knowing you can ask to sit at the bar. Even better, get takeout and have a picnic by the rose garden.

Yelp
Spectacular food, perfect cider, amazing service. What else do you want? The perfect place for a family meal.

Yelp
Very nice restaurant with a popular vibe. You can get a roasted chicken for take-away, to eat it at the table (more expensive) or you can eat it at the counter for the same price as for take-away (EUR 7.70 for one entire chicken). The chicken itself is tasty and I also liked the cider although not being an expert of it I cannot judge the quality. Service is quick and friendly.

Yelp
Casa Mingo, come here when you want to eat good and have your tummy fully satisfied! This is an old school restuarant that's cherished for many years in this community of Madrid. They are known for their Ciders and their rotisserie chicken! I had the cider (the non-sweet one) and it added a nice touch to my meal. The chicken is delicious full of flavor and would definitely recommend. I also had the chorizo, which was extremely tasty as well. Then to top it off order their Lime dessert! It's like a lime pudding, but boy it was so good! I loved it! Would definitely return here when I come back to Madrid.

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5.0 Service: 2.5/5.0 Value: 3.0/5.0 Decor: 3.5/5.0 Overall: 3.5/5.0 Fun place to grab a cider and roast chicken. The cider was decent as was the roast chicken, but everything else of the menu was pretty pass-worthy.

Yelp
Swear I wrote a review for this place my first time here, but here goes: I've been to Casa Mingo three times already and it's one of the most affordable and well known restaurants! For just 11 euros, you can get a moist rotisserie chicken. I highly recommend getting it with bread OR a tortilla because it's packed full of flavor. Best of all, if I'm just going with another person - we have leftovers so the serving size is quite big. Also, they're known for their ciders so get one and see. Their chorizo isn't bad as well but it's 4 euros for just one piece.

Yelp
Woah. I did not know I liked roast chicken until today. And the cider? Well that love has just been reconfirmed. Although it seems to be a city legend, I had never been before and thankful I finally made it. There is no other place like this in the city. Not only is their chicken delicious, the place is open, relaxed, and rather spacious. Our group of eight waited a bit for a table during prime lunchtime, but chilled in line sipping on cider and watching the chickens spin round and round in anticipation of what was about to come. At the table we had more cider, chicken, salad, and maybe what was even better than the chicken- chorizo a la sidra. We could not stop ordering it. On the other hand, skip the salad. The waiters aren't particularly social but that can be expected since they are manning such a big restaurant. The total fell right around 10 Euros a person and we were stuffed (and very happy). I'm telling you- even if you don't think you are a chicken-kind-of-person (if those exist), do yourself a favor and give Casa Mingo a try. They made a believer out of me!

Yelp
Our family of five stopped in for lunch because we found it on yelp the food was fantastic! They have full-service dining as well as a tapas bar.

Donovan B.

Yelp
This place was amazing as always. Crispy skin chicken. Fast service. Covid protocols were enforced. Clean. Open late.
google avatar

Nathan J.

Yelp
The sidra is amazing, perfect compliment to the chicken! Worth the time to walk over for a perfect lunch.
google avatar

Michele Y.

Yelp
Tasty chicken. Loved the cider. The portions were ample and it was fairly priced. The restaurant is cute and the waiters were very friendly and helpful.

Richard V.

Yelp
Dont do takeout here. TERRIBLE! Everything was dry and over cooked. The salad was warm and looked like is was a week old
google avatar

Addie K.

Yelp
Took my family here and was not disappointed! The chicken is some of the best I've ever had, the sidra dulce is delicious, as well as the chorizo which is just bursting with flavor. Pricing is super reasonable- you can easily leave feeling full with spending under 12€ for a variety of food. Definitely will be back, super good for groups too!
google avatar

MJ D.

Yelp
We loved the rotisserie chicken after all the tapas we had in Madrid. Moist, tender, you can tell it's good chicken also because there's still yellow fat between skin and meat, that's some wonderful flavor from your grand mom kitchen!! Price are good, €11.0 for a medium size chicken was more than reasonable consider to buy a whole chicken in WholeFood Market back in the states will cost you $9-13.0 and not nearly as good.
google avatar

Clarissa C.

Yelp
The rotisserie chicken had great flavor and was juicy! Coming back for that, the olives, jamon, the service!
google avatar

Sylvia P.

Yelp
My go to spot! Can't replicate the chicken or the cider to go with it in the states! I'm just sorry I don't have a picture to share. That's how good that I forgot to take a picture.
google avatar

Ali N.

Yelp
Best Pollo asado ever! It's so tender and greasy with Sidra is a perfect combination. The Sidra cake is amazing, but the Salad is over priced! Camareros bordes pero que les den!
google avatar

Chandler R.

Yelp
This place is SUPER Spanish. Here you will see lots of Madrileños with their big families pouring "sidra" from high up into their glasses. I've noticed that past few times I've been there that everyone does that... at first I thought the guy next to us was being dramatic! But my best guess would be that it aerates the cider and makes it open up to the best flavor possible! Anyways- the cider & chicken are to die for!! If you're looking to get it a little cheaper or potentially avoid a long wait for a table, stand at the bar! The cider is super fresh, and coming from someone who doesn't love cider at all, I really enjoyed it! The chicken is a rotisserie chicken cooked to perfection! There are other things on the menu but I've never tried anything else & I didn't see anyone around me ordering anything else. This place is a must!

Yelp
1) Go for the history - in business since 1888 2) Go for the chicken - some of the best roast chicken that I've eaten -- juicy inside, crispy outside, tasty throughout 3) Go for the cider? Hard to say. You can only order by the bottle. We ordered the 'natural' and thought it tasted like musty old apple juice. (And I usually *like* American and English hard ciders like Woodchuck, Strongbow, etc.) Seemed like most other tables were ordering the sweet cider, so I'd try that one if we ever go back. 4) Go for the art -- Well, not at Casa Mingo, but right next door at the Ermita de San Antonio, where you can see Goya's tomb and an amazing ceiling fresco he painted - http://www.spottedbylocals.com/madrid/ermita-de-san-antonio/ 5) Go for the chorizo? That's what other reviewers say. Something else I'd like to try if I ever make it back to Casa Mingo.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Pretty bomb cider. They make and bottle it themselves which makes it even better. And it's cheap! Did I say it's cheap? Because it's cheap. At 5 euro for 750mL bottle, that's a steal. We just stopped by to have some jamon serrano and bottle of the cider as I hadn't seen any other place really advertise that they served 'sidra' as it's called in spanish. Plenty of seating room in the spacious dining hall and it was rather empty at around 8pm as it still seemed early for Madrid. The service is actually better than most places I've been as the waiter came over directly after I sort of motioned to him. I'm used to getting the check immediately in the states, realized it wasn't happening and motioned again for him. He had it straight away. Home slice made sure we knew what we were getting and had a nice, genuine smile on his face. Next time I'll try the roasted chicken as everyone raves that it's absolutely fabulous. Most definitely coming here again. My only peeve is that it's the hell out of the way. It's on the edge of town and after a long day it's not really fun heading out that way. Do yourself a favor and take the 10 train straight to Principe Pio and back to save yourself the trouble of walking up the incline from Hell. -Ciao y buen provecho!
google avatar

Joyce Y.

Yelp
We walked 8 km here - gosh this place is kind of in the middle of nowhere. So i have to say - their chicken tastes like any rotissere chicken i could buy at Sam's Club - is there really anything that special about it, other than its made in Spain and being an american i'm drawn to tourist traps??? BUT i dont want to be a downer - i still recommend this to any tourist because the concept is very different and its worth the hike. At least you can burn calories walking there and going back home.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing roast chicken and cider in Madrid! Our uncle recommended this place and it was good since there were also a lot of locals in the place. The cider was sweet, apple, and alcoholic-- for only 5 Euros per bottle! It was cheap and good. We ate family style. We all shared the whole roasted chicken, tortilla de patata (potato omelette), and delicious cider-cooked chorizo sausage. The place is off the beaten path. We took the metro and walked a few blocks to restaurant, then took the bus back to our apartment. On the weekends, you may need to wait for a while to get seated.
google avatar

Guillermo C.

Yelp
The place has been around a very long time and it's a must see if you go to Madrid. The food was good and the sidras tasty. The service was excellent and they should get a 3.5 star rating.
google avatar

Derrick A.

Yelp
Does Casa Mingo have great cider? Yes, absolutely. Does Spain in general have a lot of great cider? Well of course, it does. Does Casa Mingo have great roasted chicken? You know it does. Is it the best you'll ever have? Let's be honest, good roasted chicken is good roasted chicken and you can only go so far. Is Casa Mingo worth the trip? Of course, and the main reason why is the history. This place has been around since 1888, so why not taste a bit of history in a place that is always packed with a great atmosphere? It is a bit out of the way though, however, if using the subway, simply go to Principe Pio station and its a quick 5 to 7 minute walk....
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Seriously, eat here. The food is quite good, the prices way low, service good. I mean, what's not to like? We'd heard about this place from a friend who'd lived in Madrid, and she as so right. We walked there from our hotel as it was about 20 minutes away, and as soon as we saw the place from across the street we knew it was a winner. Lots of folks, most smiling and eating and laughing. What better recommendation is there? Wonderful food, if you're a food snob you won't be impressed, but for what and where it is, get a grip... Helpful waiter, small menu and the cider was some of the best we've enjoyed. Check it out, you'll be glad you did. Enjoy!
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
Visited August of 2012 Juicy, tender, greasy chicken! Good flavor - clearly much better than super market or Boston Market (and I eat rotisserie chicken about once a week.) I even used the bread to sop up all the grease. Even my gf (now fiance) thought it was great and she doesn't usually like greasy food. I am no cider expert, but it was refreshing on a hot summer day in Madrid. For under 20 euros, quite a deal in Madrid for a really filling lunch. It is a bit of a walk, but it is very doable. As mentioned in other reviews, visit the Ermita de San Antonio across the street. As a Goya fan, it shows his work and where he is buried. (Sans head?!) If and when I go back to Madrid, I will go back to get some more greasy chicken goodness.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
I lived in Madrid for 9 years. What locals already know is the spit-roasted chicken at this place may be the best in the country. As a 5 star rating suggests, this is as good as it gets.
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
I had a great meal here. Probably best to go at an off hour. You're handed a laminated card in a number if languages listing your a la carte options. I had read about the whole, quartered roasted chicken so I ordered that along with a glass of sidra and some bread. Everything arrived within a couple of minutes. The chicken was cooked perfectly, sprinkled liberally with sea salt, with just the right amount iof drippings for the bread, and charred in just the right places. For dessert, oddly, there is no coffee available, but a slice of Tarta de Santiago, a cakey, eggy, chewey wedge coated with powdered sugar, was excellent. I should add that my waiter was helpful and friendly, though around five he and most if the other waiters sat down for their own dinners. No problem. I just politely asked someone else for the check. The bill was around 18 euros. The ambience is also interesting as the place seems not to have changed much since the 19th century, lots of sidra barrels, brown, worn paneling, old mirrors and such. I would love to come back and order just sa porción of the chicken and try a porción of the chorizo as well. You may want to combine this meal with a visit to the Ermitá de San Antonio de la Florida down the block where Goya is buried under beautiful frescos that he painted. The visit to the church is free.
google avatar

Sheila T.

Yelp
The roast chicken is delicious and so is the cider. It's busy, clean, and the service is friendly. It's a good place to stop if your in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
If you go to Madrid and don't go to Casa Mingo - you've really missed a great place. When I lived in Madrid it was my favorite casual place; the roast chicken and cider are incredibly good, simple but amazing. It is a place I still I return to every single trip, sometimes on my way in from the airport! Great, great.

Jane L.

Yelp
Recommended by a friend who had been in Spain, we were not disappointed with Cidre Casa Mingo. Lively, families, dates, groups - all were enjoying this historic restaurant. We ordered the rotisserie chicken - crispy skin, succulent meat - delicious! My Spanish being so bad, the green salad I ordered became potato salad - large portion & also very good. A bottle of wine, a lovely waiter- a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Casa Mingo is good for either a place to get full on the rather cheap or to bring a tourist to show them good (though pricier than the real thing) Austurian cider and food. The chicken is typical roast chicken, dripping with the addictive Spanish grease. If you like strong flavors, try the cider chorizo and cabrales bleu cheese. Tortilla is so-so and service is barebones -- usually quick, but rude. It's the perfect place, though, for a big group, especially last minute, because it's title is true--it's as big as a house with two stories and a lot of terraza space during the summer, which is the perfect time to eat Spain's version of BBQ. Also, if you're outside, you can try to pour the cidre natural the way it's intended to be poured, at a high arms-length!

Andrew B.

Yelp
This review is written expressly for the chicken. It was so tender and flavourful, I'll be back for that alone. A 'racion' of chicken is 10.50 euros, a great deal. We came with a very large group (15+) and were served promptly. The place is very old, so you shouldn't expect much more than a simple old restaurant with simple rustic seating. Personally, Spanish Cider does not appeal to me, but they do have beers for order that they will begrudgingly bring you if you ask.
google avatar

Clara B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, staff very friendly and efficient. Food is delicious and very cheap! Usually order mixed salad, chorizo sausage, chicken and the sweet cider! Also the rice pudding is tasty!! However it gets very busy around 2.

Elliott C.

Yelp
Everytime i'm in madrid I make sure that I visit Casa Mingo at least once. The atmosphere is great the staff are very friendly and efficient but most of all the food is so tasty. I have the mixed salad chorizo sausage and of course the chicken. Also the cider is very good. 100% recommend this place, best chicken in Madrid!!!!
google avatar

Gustavo G.

Yelp
Great and easy going place to enjoy roasted chicken, chorizos a la sidra, tortilla and clearly a bottle or two of Sidra
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Delicious tapas, chicken, and cider! This place was the perfect spot for a relaxing and lazy afternoon lunch. On a nice day it's best to be seated at the sidewalk area to soak up the sun and watch the mix of people on an afternoon stroll or sightseeing journey. Casa Mingo is located near the Palacio Real de Madrid and some local parks. Prices are very agreeable as opposed to the heavy traffic locations where tourism is welcomed. Service is also prompt and accommodating. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Terry P.

Yelp
On a recent visit to Madrid my wife and I were tired of tapas and ham and wanted some good roast chicken. We found this place just sow from the palace near the train station. Great chicken. Salad and hunks of bread. Wash it all down with very good and reasonably priced Spanish wine. The cider, which they specialize in, is quite good also. And all very inexpensive. What's not to like. Heartily recommend this place.

Yelp
Oh, happy memories. Endless amounts of delicious roast chicken and cider, at stupidly cheap prices. Fun, entertaining, and constantly delicious. I'd heartily recommend it, even though it's a bit out of the way and can be a trek to get to. Still, a wonderful place to go to for a great feed.
google avatar

Yelp
The men is simple at Casa Mingo. Roasted chicken, sales, and cider. But it's sooooo good! The place gets crowded almost every day, and on weekends there are queues outside the door, so come early. I also love the large, wooden tables and the huge space presided by large looming barrels of cider. And its also affordable, besides quite a lot of fun. Come down with some friends and get yourself well fed!

Sadie R.

Yelp
Great, super cheap for how much food you get. The chicken is delicious, but go during the lunch hour when it is busy and the chicken is fresh. We went too early on our first try and the chickens had been cooking a little too long. The cider is okay, but a little too sweet (the dulce). The natural tastes kind of salty and stale.

Bettina H.

Yelp
Casa Mingo lives up to its reputation for making great cider and delicious roast chicken. However I did have problems with two elements of the meal. The first was dessert: at least two of the options should be avoided, specifically the flan and the cuajada. We were extremely surprised to have been served two items that had clearly come from the supermarket (at prices far above what you'd pay at the grocery store) - they even came served in the supermarket packaging. Secondly, guidebooks and other reviews emphasize that Mingo is inexpensive. While it isn't too pricey, its reputation for being a cheap meal destination seems slightly overrated.

Jess S.

Yelp
one of the best meals i've had in madrid. the cider was great and the chicken was amazing.

Matthias B.

Yelp
We were walking by and stopped for dinner. Very nice atmosphere, food is ok, the chicken was a little dry, fine service. If I'd live in the area we would go here for time to time to eat a snack and drink cider.
