The Best Portuguese Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Old country décor and fine dining vibes are constant draw cards for this institution of over 40 years. The Mediterranean vibes are strong at this swanky spot, right down to its tiled walls. With large portions and convivial service, try Minhota’s evening table d’hôte menu for the best bang for your buck." - JP Karwacki

The food was delicious and tasted just like Portugal. It was a nice high end restaurant and the service was friendly and as quick as possible. I found the pastel de nata a bit dry, but otherwise the food was great!

Food was good. We took the cabbage soup which was sublime and the meat platter to share. Also good. The meat was slightly overcooked but still really good. The service was really good too. Very attentive staff. We’re definitely going back to try out more.

Google
Best Portuguese food is known for its seafood, cured meats, and soups, and this place lived up all those expectations. The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly and through with menu, great recommendations for dinner. They often check to ensure all is well.

We were hosted to this restaurant by our Portuguese friend recently. It’s clearly a family favorite, and now I understand why. The Portuguese cuisine was the best I’ve ever had—everything was freshly made, bursting with flavor, and incredibly juicy. A big thank you to CASA MINHOTA for the exceptional hospitality and for letting us experience such outstanding dishes. Highly recommended!

A true gem in the heart of Plateau-Mont-Royal (Portuguese Plateau). We were 5 people for lunch during a busy weekend, Saint-Laurent Sidewalk Sale. Surprisingly inside, it wasn't. We showed up no reservation and they took us in right away. The waiter was super friendly and checked up on us regularly. There was a big group in the second section of the restaurant, but they weren't that loud for us to talk. The food was amazing. No issues with the chicken, pork, shrimps and steak. Everything was perfection. I would suggest anyone on a visit from anywhere, to try out this restaurant if you are in the heart of the Portugese Plateau.

Casa Minhota is amazing! Everything from their delicious food, their authentic atmosphere, the staff is always very kind and accommodating, their prices are very good, their menu has lots of choice, their plating aesthetics is nice, just everything is 10/10. Darcy is fantastic! This is one of my favourite restaurants Favourite things: Bacalhau com Natas, Bacalhau a Bras, Bacalhau a Lagareiro, Sardinhas, Polvo, Bitoque & Porto Pears or Natas do Céu dessert

Google
This was the first place we ate at. It was late and we were looking for something that wasn’t going to have a wait and be in the area. There are a lot of Portuguese restaurants so thought we should try one out, but this one fell short despite decent reviews. The service was fine, but not super attentive and pretty minimalist except for the server at the end who was nice enough to give an extra free dessert to go. Food wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either. The mussels tasted fishy and many weren’t opened. The octopus seemed more like a mixed salad with octopus instead of the octopus being the main star of the dish. The seafood plate was basically lobster (which I do appreciate and that was good) with other average seafood around it. They don’t give descriptions so you don’t know what you’re getting on the plate. The bar area seemed more local and friendly. A decent amount of tables that were close but not too close, atmosphere was fine - not too loud, but felt lively enough. Overall I’d try elsewhere especially with the amount of great food in Montreal.

Fantastic food, went on a busier night so staff appeared a little shorthanded

Yelp
Great food, great service, my favourite Portuguese restaurant in Montreal. Beats others hands down.

Yelp
The entire experience has been a true, happy journey to Portugal, elevated by the enthusiastic sharing & care of the front of house staff. It starts with the parking out back, which is about 10 spots immediately adjacent to the rear of the restaurant. Parking there is only for restaurant patrons but there is usually parking on Rue St-Laurent, a most happening of places. The side is a happy Portuguese tiled experience, which I say with authority having dined in the most Portuguese place, Ironside neighborhood of Newark, NJ. The music is extremely well chosen Portuguese modern music which greatly enlivens the entire mood. I cannot say Africa things about the food. We came during Montrèal Restaurant week, locally called MTLáTable, which has C$27 3-course brunch specials which are ssoooo gooood, our party of seven ordered all different dishes and the quality presentation and unique cooking style of each one is to be complemented. Clearly the prep staff made fresh choices of ingredients of every type. Many highs include the unique drinks menu and the happy staff whose attitude make you want to go straight to Portugal, a famously idealized land & people, appropriately so. Salud!

Yelp
Nice place on St Laurent blvd. They have a private parking in the back which is great for this neighbourhood. We were seated in the back where they have a private room. Plenty of staff with quick service. Some of the plates had small portions while others were generous. The octopus appetizer was pricey and small. It was more of an octopus salad with finely chopped veggies in a vinaigrette. It was a hot cold dish. My main was the "spicy " shrimp. Not spicy and small. The chicken plates were more impressive. They have a full bar. The service was good, very attractive. The food was fine. The experience was ok

Yelp
Top notch personable service. Our waiter couldn't have been kinder, friendlier, or more hospitable. We walked in with two kids at 8:30 pm and he was so welcoming. The food was delicious--cod stew and salmon salad were standouts. It felt like having dinner at a friend's house, if your friend is an accomplished Portuguese chef with a hospitable husband waiter. Five stars.

Yelp
What a delightful experience! We were greeted with a big smile and escorted to our table. We had starters & main. We started with garlic shrimp and snails! Absolutely delicious. The flavors were so good. Surft & turf! I had to admit...this was the best lobster I've ever eaten! My taste buds were dancing the whole time lol The steak was spot on and full of flavor too. The fries on the other hand was not all that! I had a couple and stopped. Steak on the rock came with 3 different sauces! Each was amazing. The jumpo shrimp was cooked perfectly. We paid $231 plus tip.

Yelp
Find this place on yelp , the food was delicious the only complain I have there's no ac in the restaurant was so hot and very uncomfortable which make us eat quick just to leave . But I still recommend to try this place

Yelp
We happened to walk by this place around 7 pm on a Saturday evening and decided to give it a try. Friendly and welcoming staff and delicious food with a wide selection - 4 stars for that. But it took FOREVER for our salads & entrees to arrive and staff very rarely made an effort refill our water glasses. They seemed very understaffed. I'd give Casa Minohta another chance only if it isn't crowded.

Yelp
A quaint authentic Portuguese restaurant in the heart of Montreal. We hashed for a tasting menu with the addition of a steak served on a hot stone. The appetizers weren't amazing and lacked any inventive flair, but their spicy shrimp was actually quite good. For the mains, the steak was a great cut of meat, and by far the best part of this course. Finished off with a desert which was amazing... best part of night.

Yelp
Very traditional and cozy. Amazing food. Excellent price. Specially for the Table d'hôte

Yelp
This is the first real Portugese restaurant that I've been too and wow, is it tasty. I loved the salty bread that came out with olives and oil as a starter. For dinner, I had the mussels as well as the jumbo shrimp. On top of that, the service was amazing. The portions were massive - I also find this place super cute with the old school decor and friendly vibes.

Yelp
I have been here about 5 times. It was a friends birthday today and we thought it would be nice to host their birthday party here. We were about 40 people. There was a set menu. About 35$ for entrees, appetizers, main dish and desserts. We began the sit down with complimentary wines, both red and white. As for entrees, we had shrimps, calamari and chorizo. This was accompanied by either a fresh green salad or caldo verde soup (spinach soup). The main dishes were just to die for. Pork and clams for me and Bacalhau (Cod fish) for my wife. Although the main dishes took some time to make their way to us, it was well worth the wait. All were perfectly paired with their respective red and white wine selection. The dessert was the birthday girl's cake, however they have a nice selection of Portuguese pastries to choose from. I recommend the Pastel de nata, also known as Portuguese custard. All in all, this place is a must try for anyone wanting to try out authentic Portuguese food in Montreal, it is well worth the trip!

Yelp
We came to Montreal with the plan of tasting many Quebecois dishes, then we made a pit stop at Casa Minhota. Well, we got stucked there . Food is amazing, wine is good and service is... Portuguese. Next day we came down from Mont Royal (4 miles hike) and to our surprise we just showed up in front of Minhota, a beer honey? Yes sure! Well, we ended having dinner there. Thank you Juan Manuel!

Yelp
Great food and service. Family and I had a spectacular time. Drinks were also really good.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and service with a lot of personality. Incredible entrees and a fun neighborhood. Just a heads up that they are popular because they are good so it can feel hectic but they make you feel welcome.

Yelp
We were very happy with the seafood selections, preparation and taste. The service was great. This is family run restaurant told the waiter what we liked and he brought us food that fit the bill perfectly. I love going into a restaurant where they tailor your meal to your tastes. We enjoyed our meal and everyone eating around us seemed very happy also. We will be back.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Unfriendly service. We got festival paella, tea, chef's snails, and grilled quail. There were shards of shell in the seafood paella. They never filled our waters even once. They never checked on us so they never realized that the paella was supposed to come with a soup and salad and coffee for a total of 35 dollars. None of these items arrived. They still charged us the full price of 35 dollars and when we asked they simply comped the tea we ordered separately. Which was about 3.50. Not even an apology. Just don't come here. We went to The Main after. Much less formal, much better service and a lot friendlier. Cheaper too.

Ezra S.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, but it's over an hour long wait for a very mediocre paella :( Other patrons weren't too impressed with their food either.

Yelp
Great little Portuguese restaurant in Montreal. Very European feel as things are not rushed. The meal is an experience. Don't stop in of you're in a rush to get back to sightseeing. This is an experience. The steak was perfect. My picky eater kids were both extremely happy with their choices.

Yelp
Sunday evening, steady stream of diners-service was excellent. The atmosphere and decor are very inviting. Expansive menu of Portuguese fare-mostly meat and seafood. Not much to choose from if you are a vegetarian. My husband had the sirloin steak-served with broccoli and fried potatoes. My daughter had grilled chicken with a salad and fried potatoes. Both enjoyed their selections-cooked perfectly. I had the Caldo Verde (green cabbage) soup and asked for it without the chorizo sausage. It was good. For my meal I had the house salad-perfect portion of greens, artichoke, cheese, onion, egg, cucumbers and tomatoes served with a delightful creamy vinaigrette dressing. No room for dessert, though!
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
Amazing food, Joe really did an outstanding job at giving is a truely authentic Portuguese meal. From apps to paella, to fantastic desserts. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Yelp
Amazing as always and the cast of characters are fabulous. The food is great. No complaints ever.

Yelp
I had a decent experience at Minhota. My waiter was very friendly and recommended a mixed seafood dish served in a tomato cream sauce. The food was good albiet a little over-cooked. The service and decor were about average, certainly nothing special. I'm on the fence about this place. I might go back, but with so many better alternatives at the same price point I somehow doubt it.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the simple facade of this place on St. Laurent. The interior nicely tiled and cozy and the food was delicious. We had a rack of lamb and grilled seabass steak. The lamb was a bit in th overcook side for me, nevertheless it was delicious with the thinly sliced potatoes and the minimum greens it came with. My dinner companion didn't finish her seabass steak, but I think it was because the sheer size of it. We washed the dinner down with a half liter of house rioja. It was a pleasant dinner.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of eating here a few days after my horrible wait staff experience at Restaurant Portuscalle just a few doors down. The service and food quality was a thousand times better at Casa Minhota! The dining room has lovely hand painted tile all around. There were about 6 tables of small groups and one huge table of about a dozen patrons all served diligently by ONE WAITER! Everyone got their food at a very reasonable time. Everyone had full water glasses, bread and olive oil, dessert menus. This guy was amazing. He was even humming and whistling the entire time. We started with the chorizo which was delicious and prepared very well. I ordered the house specialty grilled chicken which was very tasty and juicy. The accompanying salad was lightly dressed and fresh. The potatoes were crispy and flavorful. My fiance ordered the filet which was served on a very, very, I mean magma hot, piece of slate or some other type of rock. The steak was sizzling as it was set on the table, and continued to sizzle for quite some time. The steak was done medium rare but continued to cook on the table. The stone remained hot through our entire dinner. I even heated up some of my leftover potatoes on it. It was great. You could literally cook the steak more to your liking if you don't like your steak a little red. The wine choices complimented the meal perfectly. It was such a pleasantly different dining experience from the other place down the block. When back in Montreal, I would definitely eat at Casa Minhota again.

Yelp
Well, that was kinda unexpected. We've been to this restaurant long time (about 15 years) ago and have very nice memories. So, being in Montreal once again we had no hesitation of coming, especially considering all great reviews on TripAdvisor (was this only our experience???) Anyways, my wife ordered "Cod Minhota Style", my daughter - seafood platter and I had "Cod Lagareiro Style" (grilled with garlic). We also had an appetizer, calamari. Calamari were actually quite good no questions there. My fish was absolutely loaded with bones. I've never had in any restaurant fish with bones, it was appalling. In addition to this, it was a bit over-grilled.... read "burned" and "swimming" in oil, way too much of it. My wife's fish was very dry, almost "shoe sole" consistency under the layer of potatoes and sautéed onions... Only later (when we left) I learned how not tasty it was. Last, but not least, the seafood platter... I tried one clam from it and spitted it out.... I tried one mussel... it was cold... did it come from the jar??? My daughter said that shrimps, scallops and lobster were not that bad, but where did those cold mussels come from?? Once food was served our waiter didn't bother to check on us, though we did mention that we have great memories and so on... Was there stranger in the kitchen?? That was really awful meal and waste of $140.... Never again.

Yelp
I might be a bit biased since I LOVE Portuguese food, but my gf who never tried it left with my same obsession after eating here. Casa Minhota is a case example of delicious food meeting EXCEPTIONAL service. Upon walking in, my gf and I were cordially greeted by who I can only describe as the new gold standard in maîtres d's: Joe. Boasting his ability as a polyglot, Joe was able to hold conversations in at least three different languages during my stay. After struggling through the menu looking for the best bang to my buck, Joe noticed and assured me and my gf that he'd take care of us...I'll take it. Sipping on the well-selected wine that Joe so graciously recommended, out came two sizzling cocottes full to the brim with seafood: in one, calamari rings, in the other, mussels. Clean plates. Compliments to the chef, some friendly chit chat, and a few healthy minutes pass. A hot ceramic pot of steam and aroma fills the vacant real estate on my table. Inside, a myriad of seafood and shellfish rest over a bed of saffron rice. The fresh, full flavor that the chefs in the back of Casa Minhota can conjure up with some seafood, parsley, lemon, and garlic (probably leaving out a few more key ingredients) in icy Montreal no less, is magic. There was more to my experience, including more wine and desserts, and of course they were also delicious. But words don't do the experience justice and suffice to say that Joe really did take care of us. This restaurant and the staff inside made my last night in Montreal very special and it's a must-go in my opinion.

Omar M.

Yelp
What can i say, this is my go to place when i feel like having solid good food, good service and... Excellent bread with olives and olive oil. As a Moroccan, i love doing my bread in the olive oil. Their bread as well as their oil are excellent. One of preferred meals is the grilled chicken. Every time it's juicy, crispy and tasty. Ask at the same time. Guys take care of my nice plate. Come and try this place which has been part of the community for so long
google avatar

Yelp
Here right now. Just finished a great table d'hote - garlic snails, sardines, added a watercress salad, fisherman's platter.
google avatar

SaratogaAaron B.

Yelp
This is our favorite Portuguese restaurant. Food is delicious, though service can sometimes be slow! Make a reservation on a weekend night. My favorite dish is the Porco Alentejana (pork with clams and little fried potatoes in a sizzling sauce).
google avatar

Sandra A.

Yelp
In the heart of the Main on St-Laurent Blvd you will find an this Authentic Portuguese Restaurant Casa Minhota. This Restaurant has a solid handle on seafood. Much of Portuguese cuisine is seafood focused, they also have grilled Chicken on the charcoal ,Porc fillet on the charcoal and my favorite''Naco na Pedra'' Fillet Mignon on the stone. They serve you this fresh fillet Mignon on a hot stone and you finish cooking it to your taste. By far THE BEST Seafood mixed plat for the $$...plus homemade desserts ( Natas du ceu'' and soups. This is my favourite Portuguese restaurant. If your looking for Delicious Food,Good Wine selection's this place out,you won't be disappointed!

Heidi A.

Yelp
Service is awful. Food was ... fine. Bread was yum. Waited 45 minutes for my main. Thank goodness for the bread. Plates sat for 20 minutes before being cleared. Too bad, as I was excited to find this place. I travel to Portugal often and hoped to find a slice of it here. No such luck. Now to try to flag someone...anyone...down to get my bill so I can put this experience in the rear view mirror...

Yelp
Super cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and decent meal. I'd probably go back for a hearty meal on a cold winter night. The details: We went for dinner on a cool, rainy night. Staff was very friendly, and service was excellent. Main dining room is cozy--but not stuff--and intimate but not in a romantic way (it's not just couples). Amazing bread basket showed up almost immediately after we sat down. If only we hadn't eaten so much of it before our meal came! The grilled octopus appetizer was probably the best dish of the night: nicely cooked, delicious sauce/relish. Our mains were the meat grillade mixte and seafood grillade mixte--we wanted to sample everything. Meat came with mandolin potato fries, and seafood came with rice. If you like veggies, order a side salad or a different dish altogether. Meat was tasty but not ideal: pork was overcooked and dry; lamb was super fatty and overcooked. Steak and chorizo were yummy and properly cooked. Seafood was nicely prepared in a delicious (albeit overly salty) tomato sauce. We drank a good house red that was appropriately priced. We didn't order dessert--too full!

Yelp
One of the best places I have eaten at! I highly recommend this heavenly delightful restaurant. Food is amazing, you'll sit in silence savouring each bite of food. Start with their signature shrimp. You can thank me later.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, nice service and good wine. We will come back again even just for the people here. Recommend the seafood here especially the lobster and cod.
google avatar

Jane L.

Yelp
This is my first time ever dining at a Portuguese restaurant and went with 6 people. Waiter was the only server but spoke very good English, had a great personality, was attentive to all tables, and explained dishes well. Chicken, steak, cod, salad and paella were all fantastic topped off with the red house wine. Would definitely go back if in the area again.
google avatar

Johni B.

Yelp
Fantastic!!!! Food is amazing! Service is better! Highly recommended. Garlic shrimp is soooo good.
google avatar

Shelvin S.

Yelp
This is a really cozy place. The food and the service was delightful. The pear dessert, steak, and even the escargot. The Portuguese fries are very simple, yet delicious. Their plates are plated well, accented appropriately, and portioned nicely. While they serve their table bread cold, it is still light. Given the large number of staff members working, service was quite slow, though the place was a bit busy.

Minh D.

Yelp
Fabulous Portuguese food. Go to Portuguese place when I am in Montreal with friends, dining room is very nice or even by yourself at the bar. Service is consistently a1. The shrimp in Sauce cooked in a clay pot with bread, churico, steak on a stone, the cod, the bacalhao, the octopus and grandmas dessert are all excellent. Wine list is healthy, Quinta do Portal my fave and can't miss the Porto and expresso to finish. I'll be back soon.
google avatar

A. D.

Yelp
Went here with a friend for her birthday and we both loved it. It's affordable, the food is really tasty, and the service is great. We started with a salad--the dressing was so yummy!! We ordered the house wine and Portuguese Paella for our main course. Loved the paella! The seafood was FRESH and the dish was well seasoned. The house wine was impressive--house wines aren't usually this tasty, at least in my experience, but this one was really good!! Overall, it was a pleasant experience, and I would definitely recommend this place!!
google avatar

Craig G.

Yelp
I find it unfortunate that after sitting down for 5 minutes the first thing our waiter asks us are you ready to order? First off whats the rush? Second can I have the wine menu to start and go from there? It seemed they just wanted us to eat and get out. With so many great food options in our city and when spending with wine and tip 80$ a head you would expect service to be a priority and food not to be bland. Wasn't experienced with both aspects and will go to Portus Calle or Douro instead where I know we aren't just money walking through the door but clients.

Joshua G.

Yelp
We just walked into the establishment and was seated quickly. I ordered a seafood platter which was amazing with the amount of fish and seafood you receive on a plate. The flavor was great and was cooked perfectly. Recommend this restaurant for those who want to enjoy some good seafood.
