How Diverse Influences Shape a Midwestern Tasting Menu | Bon Appétit

"Agni's tasting menu is shaped by wide-ranging references. Practically every dish served at the Columbus, Ohio restaurant is an homage to a person or place who has inspired a member of the kitchen team. The recipe for Bengali goat curry is sourced directly from chef-owner Avishar Barua’s mother, spooned over a bed of ribbed pasta shells; a rohan duck adobo borrows from the teachings chef de cuisine James Garlock’s Filipino peers from culinary school; and a “Heckuvagood” sauce (adorning a chaat starter course) gestures to the Midwest’s cherished Heluva Good! dip. Like Barua, Agni is both Bengali-American and unmistakably Midwestern. It’s also deeply influenced by the restaurant’s kitchen team, most of whom hail from Oaxaca. In that spirit, the ever-changing menu may feature a duck mole or a cafe con pan-inspired dessert, conceived with direct input from Agni’s staff. The version of Agni’s menu, served in Spring 2024, begins with an idiosyncratic French onion chaat and ends with a cafe con pan bread pudding—fitting, artfully composed bookends for the story that Agni sets out to tell during each meal." - ByLi Goldstein

The fajitas were spectacular. The amount given was enough for two people. Only negative thing were the side toppings. You only got a tablespoon of sour cream, tablespoon of guacamole very small amount of salsa and lettuce. I’m sure you could ask for more but I don’t know. The salsa was most definitely different from many others I’ve tried, but delicious. Will definitely eat here again.

We came here after finding out Cucos is closed on Sunday and also seeing this place recommended online. The nachos and tacos we tried were alright but not the best I’ve had. I think we will try something different. The complimentary salsa was good but the chips were the super thin kind (similar to Chili’s) that’s not my favorite. Plenty of parking. They also have a nice patio for when the weather cooperates! The waitress was friendly and they have good weekly specials that we will be back to try!

Google
I started with a House Margarita, but with an edible flower?? That's top notch level. The food is authentic, like I was actually visiting someone's abuela. These sauces are obviously from scratch, you can taste it. The staff feels like family, the food is like I'm on vacation, the drinks are top shelf compared to what I expected. In the area? Stop searching, just come here

Google
You aren't here for the atmosphere and the service, although they are adequate and at times even above par. The location leaves something to be desired to be sure. But, the food is what you are ultimately here for and in this category Casa Oaxaca shines. It was literally just us and a couple of carry out patrons at 5pm on a Tuesday and these folks took it all very seriously. They meant to shine and they did. It was absolutely stand out in terms of authentic Mexican expectation, and with no particular shortcomings when it came to the food. Just right on all accounts. We will do it again!

Google
We had the mole enchiladas and pozole, along with a cuba libre and michelada. Everything was amazing and incredibly authentic. The staff was also so sweet and their service was prompt. Swing by and try them out!

Google
Our waitress was amazing. I asked for her advice on my drink and she came through on it. I order the shrimp fajitas. Alot of food came on my plate. My man ordered a seafood plate as well. Could have used a little more food on his plate. But he enjoyed it. Our entrée was amazing as well. The salsa is very authentic and warm. I really have nothing bad to say about it.

Google
Cold beers! Friendly service! The chips and salsa were very average, which is unfortunate because everybody loves really good salsa and chips. Dinner was good, authentic Mexican food. Tacos were average in my opinion. Overall, good!

Google
From the moment you step inside Casa Oaxaca, you can feel that family‑owned energy radiating from the kitchen to the service staff—it’s the kind of place that treats you more like family than a customer. Their pazole takes center stage—a massive, great soup piled high with savory goodness and bold regional flavors that empower your taste buds to throw a party. The vibe? Relaxed and genuine. warm lighting, and staff who make you feel like they’re sharing a slice of home. It’s authentic Mexican cuisine—cooked with passion, served with pride. Final Bite: If you’re craving honest-to-goodness Oaxacan fare with a side of family warmth, Casa Oaxaca delivers every time. Worth the drive and the calories.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! My table loved everything we ordered. I especially enjoyed the molé.

Yelp
El servicio la verdad muy mal. Dan las 8 y ya casi te quitan el Plato de las manos. La verdad no recomiendo el restaurante Oaxaca.

Yelp
Went to Casa Oaxaca because Yelp gave it 4.5 stars. All I can say is you people are delusional. Barely any pork in my Pastor burrito and my wife's chicken chimichangas contained inedible pieces of chicken inside. Salsa with chips were bland and rice and beans had zero seasoning. We won't be back and you should probably skip as well.

Yelp
Continues to be a great spot for authentic Mexican food. It looks like they've updated their menu! It used to be a 1 page menu (front and back) but now the menu is a booklet with multiple pages. We came in midday on a Sunday and it wasn't busy at all. The lady directed us to pick a table and we opted for a booth. Once we sat down. The menus were already at our table which was so convenient. I opted for their chilaquiles (verdes) and my husband got a torta. The chilaquiles plate was a generous portion - it came with beans, rice, the chilaquiles, a piece of steak, one fried egg, and a small slice of telera (bread). The steak was thin and seasoned well. The green sauce for the chilaquiles was a little acidic, not spicy, but overall delicious! We will continue to be back to this restaurant. Definitely worth checking out for AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD.

Yelp
Pozole was amazing! Hit the spot on a cold day when I was just passing by the restaurant and everyone was very nice and helpful! Will definitely be back for more

Yelp
With Chile Verde sadly just closing the other day, I kind of wanted Mexican and crossed the street to this. It's tucked away in a small strip mall, doesn't look like much from the outside. Doesn't look like much on the inside either. It's nice enough, orange walls, clean, maybe slightly run down. Posole sounded good on a very cold day. So I got that, and a birria taco, because birria is all the rage. Chips came out first, decent chips with a very thin, just OK salsa. The taco was pretty good, although I think birria is a bit overhyped. Tender meat, not a whole lot of flavor, for birria in general and this particular version. Cheese and a nice shell. The posole was amazing. Loads of meat, radishes and cabbage, I think, and other things in the very, very tasty, very slightly spicy broth. Some other veggies on the side along with crispy tortillas. Not as much hominy as I usually see in posole, but enough, and the combination of flavors and textures was wonderful. Just excellent, and I was very disappointed to reach the bottom of the pretty big bowl. Service was great. Prices are good for the quality and quality. I forgot about the consommé, but I already had a soup so... Service and posole five stars. Chips and salsa and ambience three stars. Taco three or four stars. I am a person who prefers really good food over ambience- and this place is not bad looking or feeling, don't get me wrong. They have an extensive menu, with lots of stuff I want to try. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
We discovered this spot last week when we were visiting Tulip next door. We love Mexican food, so we were excited to try a new-to-us spot! The staff is very friendly! Greeted kindly and service was great the whole time we were there. The space is simple, but interesting as there's a huge empty area right in the middle of the room. Maybe they removed tables at some point? It's no biggie at all but it's interesting! Also, it was a cold day so maybe that's why, but it was pretty cold inside which wasn't great. We went for torta Cubano and alambre meal (al pastor meat with peppers, pineapple, cheese)/rice/beans and tortillas. Oooh man everything was so delicious! Especially the torta -- they add egg scramble to theirs and maybe chorizo. It's fire! Oh and definitely get hot sauce. Theirs is super good - great spice level and full of flavor. I'd absolutely recommend it and look forward to warm weather to sit outside on their patio with a glass of jamaica!

Yelp
Ok so we ordered a ton of food on a lazy Saturday. Not a ton to say about it other than that the birria sauce was thin, and most everything else was just OK (pastor torta, chicken burrito, pastor tacos). However, my pozole was excellent. The garbanzos were cooked well and I smashed literally every bite of it. I have never had pozole outside of Mexico City and I wasn't disappointed. I have mixed feelings about this place because of that. I think I might need to give this place another shot, if only for another bowl of pozole. Or maybe I just need to find good pozole at a place that also does the other things well too... hmm.

Yelp
I had 6 tacos and a kid's hot dog+fry combo GrubHub delivered to me, my best friend and kids. The delivery was quick, the food was still warmish. The packaging was nothing to brag about but I have seen way worse. I give this particular experience with Casa Oaxaca a 3 for these reasons: - There was absolutely NO sauce in the order, Idk if this is a midwestern stereotype consumer adaptation or what, pero bb-- I want and NEED my salsa verde for my tacos de lengua to reach their rightfully elevated status. - There were no condiments with the kid's hot dog either; no ketchup? Idk too many kids who hate ketchup guys lol! On the flip side-- my kid ate the entirety of the thing sans Ketchup, and even ate the bun (both rarity), kid then proceeded to eat one of my lengua tacos. - the tacos could've been placed in separate containers and labeled -- the lack of labeling wasn't a problem for me, but lol I can imagine the nightmare this would've been had I ordered for my husband, self, best friend, her significant other + kids / any group larger than the three i ordered for when EVERYONE wants tacos. The flavors make me want to give the place a 5 but the lack of salsa? NO JALAPENO? NO NOPAL -- with my lengua? Or any street taco? Missed opportunity yall.

Yelp
I haven't found a lot of good taco spots except La Super Torta. Found them on Google! I ordered the asada, pollo, and chorizo tacos with fries. Delicious and not dry! I did wish the tacos came with salsa. The fries were good too. Seasoned and all that! I did pop them in the toaster oven to crisp them up a bit. It's an open restaurant with tables by the walls and a bar area in the middle. Not busy when I came on a Saturday evening. Pickup orders are at the bar. A staff member did come to greet me so that was nice!

Yelp
Portions are super small.! The only thing they have going for them are the beans but I literally saw them using a microwave for most of the meals.

Yelp
I had high hopes from the reviews, but this place did not live up to my expectations. The layout is very strange, tables centered around a large bar that only has tequila, no beer, etc. The food selection was small and entrees severely limited. This is probably best for tacos. The entrees were basic. Very average Mexican fare. Mine was lukewarm and just ok. The service matched everything else. Maybe this was just a bad night for them. This place isn't bad, but there is no compelling reason to return.

Yelp
Came here for the Birria tacos! They were crispy on the outside and yummy on the inside. They did not put in as much meat as some of the other places do but it still was pretty good. The consommé was my favorite as it had rice in it and was very flavorful. I also got a steak Street taco where the steak was crisp and tasty. The owners and staff were extremely friendly. Can't go wrong with this place!

Yelp
Yall better come n support! Lovely people n great food! one of the few food places with what i consider authentic Southern Mexican cuisine!

Deandre L.

Yelp
there was this weird Mexican man staring at me, but the food was alright I guess. to be fair the service was decent but I'm not really fond with people just eyeing me down. it's weird, and I'm young he looked to be way older.

Yelp
What a lovely surprise to find this hidden gem. Salsa was much better than average. Chips were light and crispy. Birria and suadero tacos were so good. Ordered the birria dipping broth ($3.99) and ate it with a spoon. Delish! And the guacamole was outstanding. So glad to have found this neighborhood delight.

Yelp
We came to try the mole on a recommendation and it was great. We also got the tlayuda on the recommendation of the waitress. Wow! It was full of toppings and was so good. I would also recommend getting the horchata. We will be back.

Yelp
Mole, mole, mole. Hard to find authentic mole in cbus. At Casa Oaxaca, the mole is good - like their abuela is actually making the mole in the back (i'm not saying she isn't..). Not crowded, great service. I'll be back.

Isaac K.

Yelp
Delicious birria. Great, fast service. Great music. Friendly and family owned. Ample parking.

Christopher T.

Yelp
very great food! i tried the birria tacos with the dipping sauce, so delicious! the tlyuda is also a very good. The service was great! Will definitely come back!

Yelp
This the hidden gem of Mexican food in Columbus. Great value and excellent quality. A must try if you like authentic regional Mexican food. The Mole is amazing!!!

Tara L.

Yelp
My husband and I just ate here for the first time and they had some of the best tacos Al pastor that I've ever had! Reasonable prices, friendly staff. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Mackenzie W.

Yelp
First time trying. Absolutely amazing. I got the chicken chimichanga and tried a birria taco. Soo good. Even their beans and rice are amazing! Hands down best Mexican food I've had in Columbus. Truly authentic. 100% recommend!!

Carly A.

Yelp
All the food is amazing, margaritas are perfection and the service was unbeatable! Counting down the minutes until I can go back!

Marilyn R.

Yelp
Great authentic food y'all located in back of the grocery store. But don't let that fool you, food is very good. Hopefully you speak a little Spanish if not just order off the menu. delicioso!!

Rantoul D.

Yelp
Great little restaurant with amazing homemade chips! Also has excellent Birria tacos. The only downside is that they charge $4 for consommé!

Rina T.

Yelp
Definitely a new hidden gem tucked in a center off of Hayden Run rd! They are fairly new to the area and offer BOGO pastor tacos on Tuesdays! This was my first time here and my husband's second! Flavors are authentic and bold! I got a Birria quesadilla with dipping sauce on the side. Hubs got a pastor torta and it was delish! They now serve margaritas as well!! The service was great and they were very accommodating. I can't eat corn tortillas and we all know Birria tacos are best on corn, but the cooks were able to make me a Birria quesadilla and I'm sure it was just as perfect as the tacos! Thank you Casa Oaxaca!

Laura P.

Yelp
Oof. Caveat, yes, food is art and art is personal... but thought we'd give this new spot a try. There is great Tex mex in northwest Cbus and this isn't it (Cucos is).

Samantha B.

Yelp
Service is amazing and the food is even better 10/10 recommend! The birria is definitely the best but love the pastor tacos too :)

Christopher T.

Yelp
The food is amazing with great flavors of seasoning and great service, and very kind people

welderrr 7.

Yelp
Great service. The food is spot on. Margaritas are delicious and the prices are reasonable. Bland atmosphere, booth's tables not much decoration but everything else made it worth the trip. Definitely worth checking them out. Will be back

Saundra G.

Yelp
Wow, I ordered a beef chimichanga with rice and beans and it was absolutely amazing! Definitely one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been too. It's tucked backed in a shopping mall completely out of sight but it definitely a gem!

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
This food is delicious and I had the best marg of my life!! The birria tacos were so good I was sad when they were gone. 10/10 recommen!!!!
