These Are the 20 Best Things to Do in Oaxaca, Mexico

"A restaurant set in a seventeenth-century colonial home that offers small-group cooking classes led by its chef; the spot is highlighted as a place to learn how to prepare regional specialties, particularly mole, and includes this quote from the chef, Alejandro Ruiz: "The truth is that while it’s labor intensive, it’s not complex. Making mole requires more patience than dexterity." - Patricia Doherty Patricia Doherty Patricia Doherty is a writer who specializes in covering destinations, resorts, and cruises for Travel + Leisure and other publications. This is a great venue for good Mexican food. I came here to see a friend of mine perform live. Great live music and vibe! I really like Mole and of course had to try theirs. I got the Pollo with Mole and it was delicious. I also loved the Passion Fruit Margarita. Served chilled!

This place is the real deal. I can't believe I had not been here before. It will absolutely become one of my favorites!

Google
Amazing service and terrific quality food. It tasted fresh and not too salty but fresh like it was just chopped up and cooked. It reminded me of my grandmother's food and nothing can beat that. And they even have live music performing. Definitely a place to try out.

A cute, small corner restaurant with great food and a great environment. Can have somewhat lengthy wait times (personal experience is between 30 minutes- 1 hour). Once seated, they serve chips with mole while you can enjoy some live music. Handmade tortillas were given with all the dishes we ordered. Service was pretty quick, corteous, and efficient. The food was all flavorful and freshly made. Parking is very limited, and parking tickets are quickly enforced if you park in the wrong area on the street.

I went into the restaurant and a male worker came up to me and asked how many people. I told him 2, he said to give him a moment and walked away. He didn’t give me a chance to ask any questions nor told me how long the wait was. I sat with my partner on the chairs outside, right by the door. We were waiting for about 30mins when another couple came and they were sat before us. It was extremely disappointing especially because it was one of our favorite restaurants. But being made to wait for so long and then sit someone else before us who just got there will not be bringing us back.

I am skeptical about Mexican restaurants because most places have the same menus or very similar menus, and the food is not that good or not good at all. Very often, customer service is very bad. Unhappy servers, perhaps working in the wrong place. Well, this restaurant was very good. The food was on point and delicious. I am a bit disappointed because the portion was kind of small. Very small slice of cesina and a very small slice of tasajo, perhaps a couple of ounces each. My plate came with rice and beans. I asked for no beans and all rice. Even when I ordered only rice, I barely got two small portions of rice. Not even a cup of rice. Rice is not expensive, so I don't know why they serve such a micro portion. I asked for a glass of water from the very beginning. The waitress brought some chips, but no water. I didn't get water until dinner was served. Cafe de la olla was very, very good. Great live music. I really felt like I was in an Oaxacan restaurant in Mexico. Overall, I like the restaurant, except for the small portion and the lack of customer service. Food, coffee, and good live music were the major highlights. I recommend this restaurant to people who want to enjoy a real taste of Oaxacan food.

Yelp
Always support the locals. Since I can remember this restaurant has been open. The food is tasty, the service is fantastic and it's a very chill cozy environment. They don't sell hard liquor but a model will do. We order fish breaded tacos. The toppings was cabbage, tomaotes, cilantro, onions and a very good sauce. The breaded fish were small due to the small Tortillas but I feel that at 4.49 each small taco a little more fish should be added. Please do not take this review wrong. I enjoy my two tacos, the model beer, the music from MIKE and my time with my hubby. Will I order the fish tacos at 4.49 each no. I prefer mole with chicken. Oh, forgot to mention we recieved two small plates of mole with on chips with Mexican cheese. Bomb! Check thisbplace out. Very busy on the weekend and parking is tough but worth it.

Yelp
Really cute place, especially for a date night. Very nice service and they specialize in Oaxacan foods. I love their mole, they have 2 types. There's live music on the weekend. Parking can be tough so plan accordingly.

Yelp
This is a great spot for Oaxacan food. I have been here several times for breakfast time and got Chilaquiles with green salsa and eggs, and the were so good! For dinner there are so many options I really like the soups and the tlayudas, all depends on what is on your mind that day. The guacamole, the salsa, and the food in general is always super fresh and very tasty. Try the empanadas or the enchiladas or maybe you prefer the pozole verde? Yummy! They also have music and I love that, it makes dinner so festive and relaxing after a long week at work. You can enjoy the live music and a glass of wine. The owner and staff are super friendly and helpful, the food is great and they have music, woohoo, no much else you need. Enjoy!

Yelp
We had a nice lunch here. Parking is rough and we ended up a few blocks away. The restaurant was busy but seemed to move efficiently-- we waited 25 minutes for a table. The food was incredible. They have complimentary chips with salsa and mole and we ordered quesadillas dorados for an appetizer. The quesadillas were fantastic. For mains, I had chicken mole -- a leg/thigh quarter smothered in mole with rice and beans. A bit messy, but amazing. My wife ordered one of the bass filet platters (filete de ajo?) and it was the best single piece of fish I've had in ages. The staff were courteous and we had a great meal. The lunch rush had died down by the time we finished, making this a good spot to hit off peak to get parking out front and skip the waitlist.

Yelp
I moved to OC looking for good Mexican restaurants and wow this one is amazing especially the mole Not only the service is awesome but the food is amazingly delicious!!!!! Inside makes me feel as if I'm in Mexico due to its set up. Did I mention how amazing the mole taste?!

Yelp
This is my first time here at the restaurant and I got to tell you the food is fucken delicious authentic Mexican food. Food is on point the service was superb always asking us are we good, of course we good devouring our plate and stuffing our faces. The place is a little small but place can get really crowded.

Yelp
The food was exceptional. The service during lunch could have been a bit better and for this the reason I am not giving it 5 stars. The waitress did spend quite a lot of time talking with another customers that she forgot we were waiting on her. Unfortunately, we had to leave without trying a dessert. Other than that everything was fine. The facade from the outside is not too attractive but the inside is nice and clean.

Yelp
This is a great spot for Oaxacan breakfast lunch and dinner. I came here around breakfast time and got Chilaquiles with mole, which is not on the menu, but they allowed me to customize when Chilaquiles, so I really appreciate that! The guacamole, the salsa, and the food in general was super fresh, it was clear that they make their food the day. You can tell because the guacamole was extremely green and fresh. They have a small parking lot they can park at. The surrounding neighborhood has permit parking so make sure to keep your eyes out for that if you decide to park on the street. The interior feels very homey and warm, all the walls are painted a bright color that reminds me so much of l colorful Mexican houses. I look forward to returning and trying more of their menu, and ordering a Horchata with tuna (tuna is cactus fruit in Spanish) I regret not getting that drink.

Yelp
I love the scenery and the food is delicious! Can't go wrong with the mole enchiladas, and their tlayudas! Chefs kiss!

Yelp
The food was amazing! I highly recommend the molcajete Oaxaqueño, it was delicious. The service here was great, our waitress was super friendly and we enjoyed the live music! 10/10

Yelp
I recently visit this restaurant again. I used to come here is different ownership. Now that the place is under new management, it has a different ambience. I really enjoyed the food and the service! The staff was friendly and welcoming. My favorite are the little Quesadillas! I recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food. I ordered a large tray for two and had leftover food for days! Go try the Oaxaca cheese! Great service and live entertainment!

Yelp
Casa Oaxaca has amazing food. Second time here and definitely coming back many more times lol Everything seems to be big enough to share :) Food is so flavorful and you can taste the freshness of ingredients. I love Mexican food but had never tried Oaxaca food; it's so delicious. I totally recommend this place! Service is friendly and ambience a bit loud since they have a live musician, but that's cool.
google avatar

Lori L.

Yelp
Simple, delicious and truly authentic Mexican Food. Their mole is out of this world. And I had the caldo de Pollo and it was truly scrumptious. I would go out of my way to come back here. The owner greeted us and explained the whole menu. Service was friendly and very welcoming. An absolutely wonderful restaurant.

Keith H.

Yelp
I ordered the pozole verde. The broth was very good, but unfortunately there was no meat - only fat and bone pieces.

Yelp
Love coming here with the family! Nice hole in the wall restaurant. I went a Monday at around 11am and had some hot chocolate and then got a chicken soup. The chicken soup was very flavorful and the avocado added a nice touch to it.

Jasmine S.

Yelp
Small amount of seating but amazing service the first thing they give is chips with molé on it and a spicy salsa on side both very flavorful the dishes we ordered were very filling and tasted great !

Yelp

Yelp
Food, service & Oaxaca is here This is a home away from home for people from Oaxaca and for those the love the food. 100% recommend this place. Thanks to Niria out server for been super nice and always having a smile on here face when she was at our table. We got the molotes, chilaquiles & a tamal de mole (the tamal es de hoja de plátano that can probably feed 2 people) we also got horchata which I was not a big fan probably a 7/10 but the cafe de olla and agua de pepino were amazing. I'll be back soon and this time with more people this time. -Felix O

Yelp
Cute little neighborhood restaurant. When we walked in, there was guy playing the guitar and singing. We had a big party and the servers took good care of us. The food was really interesting. Trying new Oaxacan flavors was fun. I would definitely come back again.

Yelp
10000/10 This has to be the best Oaxacan restaurant I've been to. Everything was delicious. We got four plates, i forgot the name of some but my top favorite was the appetizer plate La tentación, it was full of flavors, every item in the plate was cooked to perfection crunchy outside yet soft. We got the maracuya, and horchata drink and did not disappoint either. Their michelada was very good too. Service was amazing as well, our server was super attentive even though they were very busy. The only thing that sucks is parking but no biggie.

Yelp
Very nice pretty low-key food is decent nice place to hang out and talk. Authentic food and drink nice staff good time.

Yelp
La comida es excelente! Pedimos el tipico oaxaqueno con agua de maracuya y horchata preparada. Habia un muchacho tocando live music muy buen ambiente que se nos olvido tomar fotos

Yelp
I give this spot a 4 because I'm not a mole fan at all but the mole here was really tasty and the flavor is different from other places I've seen and tasted mole. The mole is a great dip for the tlayuda I had. I ordered the cheese avocado and tomato with bean paste. Not a huge fan of the tlayuda however with mole as a sauce it tasted more flavorful. Love the tres leches slice not super overpowering with sugar/sweetness and cream! Love the culture of the restaurant.

Zeahlot L.

Yelp
The food was absolutely fantastic here such a great find, and the Customer Service was even better

Lynnea H.

Yelp
The highest rating I've ever given a togo order. The pozole was so flavorful, meat was tender and it reheated perfectly even the next day. The plate of mole had a little spice to it and lots of white meat chicken which I loved. The enmoladas were a different style of mole than the plate but still delicious. The order came with plenty of sides and toppings. Packaged perfectly no spills or mistakes. Can't wait to visit the actual restaurant.

Moni S.

Yelp
Bought 2 packs of their tlayudas from a gentleman working there on a Sunday morning for $30 each. When I looked the next day I noticed they had mold. We went back to get an exchange and a lady who said was the owner claimed they have never sold any and very angrily accused us of lying. She was honestly very unprofessional and rude all we wanted was an exchange. We paid with cash and no receipt was given but I would recognize the man that sold it to us and frankly they can check their cameras.

Moni H.

Yelp
I ordered the red chilaquiles had little to no sauce it was dry no cheese or sour cream. I couldn't eat it didn't have any flavor at all. When I mentioned it to the server she ignored me and walked away. It was just a waste.
google avatar

Joss G.

Yelp
Delicious authenticate Oaxacan food. We went around lunch time and had the veggie tlayuda, a tentación (which is a sampler platter) and Xoxhilt (Mexican chicken soup). The tlayuda is the size of a giant pizza! They let us know they make smaller sizes too if you're looking for an individual size and it comes with soup. I would definitely recommend the tentación if it's your first time here to try a little bit of everything. The ambiance was nice, the service was so helpful and hospitable as well. Next time I stop by I'll try their moles.
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
The welcoming ambiance is surrounded by locals and friendly people. The entire restaurant is very clean. The service is excellent and the waitress is kind and generous with suggestions.

Luis S.

Yelp
The food price for what it looks on their menu . I asked for a chicken soup and told them to put the condiments on the side and they purposely put chicken on the side too . Not good
google avatar

Marlene O.

Yelp
We tried four dishes + desert here and everything was delicious and authentic! It's hard to explain but it checks off everything that makes authentic Oaxacan food great: the handmade tortillas, fresh vegetables, flavorful mole, salsa and black beans, and the perfectly grilled nopales and carne all add to homemade flavor that's difficult to replicate. Santa Ana has a lot of competition for best Mexican food and I think this place has to be in the top 3 for me. The restaurant looks like something straight from Mexico, too! Whoever's in charge of the music has good taste. The experience was wonderful all around and it was thanks to our very kind server. We'll definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Norato M.

Yelp
We have visited this location numerous times and the food is more homestyle and it is a different experience compared to other Oaxacan restaurants. We had the following: Enchiladas de Coloradito- four fried corn tortillas covered with red mole sauce and fresh cheese. Served with your choice of chicken or cheese. Garnished with parsley and onion. + Cajeta stuffed churros
google avatar

Larissa R.

Yelp
Enmoladas are so delicious! I'm definitely going back for more. My brother and my friend enjoyed the birria de chivo, their portion was huge.
google avatar

Ana J.

Yelp
First time ordering food from here ! Everything was yummy . Mole negro and tlayuda are a must !

Rosa G.

Yelp
They need to be more organize . We saw 3 tables ready and still kept us outside for another half hour. We keep asking and they would just keep walking away. Also being the first time you had to guess There was a waiting list somewhere in a desk. How about if you have someone greeting us like you do at home. They are short of staff is what I saw. Every one running like chickens. They have a lot of customers maybe it's time to get more help and hire more people to provide a better service. The food was good and nice music they just need to be more organized and make people more welcoming instead oh ignoring them because you are too busy to stop.

Micaela A.

Yelp
Delicioso y buen servicio . Domingos música en vivo. Tiene un buen ambiente familiar
google avatar

Jaime S.

Yelp
La comida y el servicio genial ..solo la música muy alta..la gente va a comer en familia y platicar de tan fuerte que esta ña música no puedes escuchar

Esmeralda M.

Yelp
The food was great! Tastes just like when I traveled to Oaxaca. Very filling! The service was nice very friendly staff. The ambiance takes me back to Mexico! I especially love the Avocado tree in the front of the restaurant! Topped off our meal w/churros reyenas de cajeta.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
This is a dive. It's located on a corner of residential street so parking is small which is why 4 stars. The food was authentic and tastes homemade. Very good traditional Oaxacan. Server was so friendly and polite. This was a pleasant surprise!

Yelp
I used to frequent this restaurant before the remodel under a different name. They recently remodeled and revamped the menu. I'm not sure if the owner changed or just management but the food was good before, now it's to die for. I visited this establishment 05/20/22 This particular day I decided to order a Molcajete Oaxaqueño, there were cuts and flavors of meat that brought memories back of my childhood. I have not had such delightful Mexican flavors in years since I left Mexico. The nopales were grilled and have a tang to them. The grilled onion adds a touch of umami sweetness and the green salsa ties everything together with a very light spice for everyone's taste. The hand made tortillas were fresh and gigantic and delicious. Overall the dish was scrumptious and the dessert tied it all together. The bananas are cooked with orange juice and tequila, please do not expect the overload of sugar that comes with Bananas Foster, this is something else altogether. I really enjoyed the slight sweetness with the citrusy tangy and tequila hints. The churros were hot fresh off the fryer filled with delicious dulce de leche, they are served with a chocolate sauce but honestly you don't even need that. The whole thing was a marvelous experience. Normally I don't like change but this place changed and it was not a mistake. Thank you for the wonderful experience! I definitely recommend this place wether you are of Mexican background or not.

Edith C.

Yelp

Joana M.

Yelp
The food is good. No problem with that. But the waitresses have a really bad attitude. You ask for something and they make faces. I have visited couple times, different person serving us and is the same attitude.
google avatar

Pris Z.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! I was invited to dinner at this spot, which I had never been to. I truly enjoyed everything experienced inside this establishment.....meaning I did not like the parking issue. Their parking lot is very small and you need a parking permit to park in neighborhood streets. Other than that...the food, the ambiance and the staff were great! Definitely will return...maybe in an Uber.
google avatar

Marvin C.

Yelp
Let me start by saying the food is REALLY good. Very authentic flavors, the mole is incredible!. They serve mole and chips with oaxacan queso as an app and it's complimentary. The enchiladas coloraditas were great, the pozole verde was really good as well, my wife is super picky when it comes to pozole and she liked it so there's that. Now I must warn you, it gets busy and the staff can't really coordinate which makes for a less than perfect experience. There were like 5 people walking around and we were never greeted or acknowledged. Finally had to find a seat ourselves, once seated it took a total of 43 mins for us to get our food and even then, my wife's pozole was cold and we had to ask them to warm it up again..so be prepared for little annoying things like that if you come here.
